There is only one Buddha and that is Sidharta Gautama, the original enlightened one. Jason can become enlightened in the same way as The Buddha, but cannot 'become' one.
Dude. Eleanor was supposed to be "a lawyer that saved innocent people from death row". And at the end of the show, she overturns the whole system in order to save all of humanity from being tortured for eternity. Damn this show is wonderful.
This did get me thinking that Jason’s only moral failings in life were largely due to his living in poverty. At one point Tahani recognizes this-and the fact that her wealthy upbringing ruined her-and wants to give all her money to Jason. I think it’s an important observation that Jason’s character never changed much because he didn’t really need to change, he just needed the right environment to succeed morally and spiritually
I mean, this is explored in the episode when they try to save Donkey Doug/Pillboi. Upon meeting Jason's father and watching them interact, Tahani says that everything makes a lot more sense now. Just by seeing his everyday life, Tahani can much more easily understand how Jason became the person he did
Jason has emotional intelligence, more than anyone else on the show. That's why despite literally knowing everything, it was Jason that taught Janet how to love. Jason made Janet human, and thus more advance than every other Janet before her. And it's those qualities that made Janet a better friend to everyone, especially Micheal.
Jason is portrayed to be stupid only for comedic purposes, unlike many of the other clown characters in other shows he never messes up the plans or acts in a genuinely stupid way(except maybe the 1st Janet reboot). For example in the beginning he knows, that if he talks, then he is toast and has pretty good patience and self control to not talk.In S4 during the experiment he plays his role of a monk perfectly and never once does he create a problem for the team.
Well… to be fair, in s4, he did mess up once by rebooting Derek. He let his jealousy get the better of him for one small moment. I do still agree with you, though, for the most part.

@@elinfelicia382 This show is just amazing like that. So many things are just perfect. It all makes sense. The writers clearly thought very hard about this show. You can tell that just from all the callbacks. Certain ideas would be brought up and because this show is basically perfect I'd be like "oh no, this is a tiny flaw but it kinda ruins it for me" but then they'd fix it instantly and bringing that up in the first place was all just part of the writing and the philisophical messages of the show. I hope this makes sense to somebody else. This show just feels like it was made for me because I had the exact same questions in my head and they will show an answer that I disagree with but then that was the plan all along and THIS is really the good place so the show fixes it and perfectly shows that argument I had had in my own head. Plus Timothy Olyphant has a cameo making it extra perfect. It's freaky how much this show feels like it's for me. I love this show, the writing is impeccable!

Instead of simply repeating a running joke it is actually a special part of the plot and their relationship. Like think about it, the moment he saves her from hell they used that to help save her. So the silly joke phrase actually has emotional significance for the characters and us, the viewers. Reallt clever writing. This isn't just a simple show, it's amazing. Every little bit of it just fills me with joy. The writers clearly cared a lot
When you think about it this way, the other characters also became their "fake good place version". Jason spent time alone in nature waiting for Janet as a monk. Tahini became an accomplished do-gooder for the sake of good and accomplishement. Chidi is the self assured teacher of the group. Eleanor helps people selflessly
That is a very good point, Maryna, I never realised that! I guess the Bad Place/Good Place was, as they were saying at the end of the show, about bringing out a person's inner self. Ironically, those inner selves ended up being genuine representations of their 'fake' selves, well spotted!
Tahani expanded her horizons and tried and excelled in things which she considered "un-ladylike" before like carpentry, architecture and more. She always had low self esteem because of her sister and thought her only talent was throwing parties and doing charity. Like you said, she abandoned competition and learned trades and skills genuinely because she wanted to feel the joy of learning and doing it. And for many people reaching that point is really difficult. Most people get stuck up in using the thing that they love the most to compete with others. Also, Chidi is not just "the teacher". He's someone who knows what he wants and is no longer hit with dilemma every time he's presented with choices. He decides he wants to go through the gate and he sticks to the decision. When he realizes that that decision would make Eleanor sad, he postpones the decision, not because of self doubt but for her. He learns determination. As for Eleanor, it's like you said. She does selfless things without thinking about it or expecting credit.
I would not say he has an INT of 0; rather, he knows how to grill his fish rather than list off the steps of the Maillard reaction. INT makes sure you can read the recipe; WIS is how you know just when to add the salt so as to not pull too much water from the vegetables. As solution architect for years, it's not the INT of the components that solve the problem; it's the WIS of their appropriate application that can make the solution work.
I feel like Jason is a good example of someone who doesn’t align with the standard intelligence like Chidi, but develops his emotional intelligence and wisdom to be what it always could be. He’s definitely that dumb friend that others might not get why you still hang out with until they become his friend and realize that he just tries to make life happier for people around him from a pure place of love and care for his homies.
Wisdom is the art of achieving understanding without the need to add knowledge (or from the Western perspective FACTS or information). The Hindus would call understanding or discernment, Viveka. Consider that we live in the information age, libraries of data at our fingertips, and seem to be on a perpetual fact finding quest and yet, instead of achieving greater understanding (bridging the distance between one another), there seems to be even more polarization.
When I started the good place i thought that heaven was really classist because Jason was a good person, just a victim of his circumstances and I think its great that the series explore that angle
I love that the four main characters were not all the same financially. You have one rich (Tahani), one comfortable middle class (Chidi), one on the lower end of middle class (Eleanor) and then one in straight up poverty. This fact really solidified that money does not play a role in a person’s ability to be morally good or virtuous
Jason is also the one who gets through to the judge on why you can't judge everyone on the same level, with his talk about the person in his dance crew who had to take care of their relatives.
A line was cut from the finale where Tahani says “Jason was kind to me. And never for any reason than that it is good to be kind” I think that’s part of Jason’s beauty. He combines pure love of living with impulsivity, which leads his train of thought to go along the lines of “oh being kind is good! That’s dope I think I’ll be kind” without a second thought. Eventually he becomes the best version of himself by telling Janet “looking good not a girl” this shows that he thought before he spoke (by remembering Janet is not a girl) but he still values kindness over intelligence and allows himself to tell Janet that it was in his other pocket. Anyway absolutely wonderful video! Brilliant theory.

Another sign that Jason is smart, actually, is that upon awakening in the fake Good Place, and being told he's a monk with a vow of silence, he actually manages to keep quiet and go along with it.
I feel like it could be an example of masking. Even in a junk yard school, he would have been singled out, likely bullied, for ADHD and would have learned coping mechanisms like masking.
Reminds me of a quote from a John waters movie "Cecil B. Demented ; "drugs really brought focus to my life, before I started using i had all sorts of problems, but now, man, I only have the one" makes me chuckle every time I watch that flick.
But Jason didn't really had any conventional education, lynyrd skynyrd wasn't really a good school, and being raised by Dounky Doug as a single father didn't make him any favor.
I always wondered how Jason even got into the bad place.. he was so pure and innocent.. and definitely represented how there was something wrong with the system from the beginning..
he might have been pure of heart and had a child like innocence, but he still did things of questionable morals during his human life like stealing, violence (molotov cocktails for one) etc. Plus, the show points out many times how impulsive he was. He was just more of a chaotic neutral or sometimes chaotic good rather than chaotic evil. But also the show was about how most people are not good or evil all of the time, and the system was flawed for everyone.

Jason's biggest flex was when he realized he couldn't "save" his father but could save his friend but still loved his father for who he was. That's next level EI
If anything, his character progression was that he became more aware of how his actions affect others. He had the capacity for selflessness but was too naive to predict the harm of his actions.
I was raised Mahayana Buddhist and my husband is Zen Buddhist and we've been talking about this FOREVER! We've discussed on several occasions that he exemplifies inherent Buddha Nature. So glad someone finally pointed it out!
@@6Uncles Zen is a Japanese tradition without gods or an afterlife and I grew up going to a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist temple which recognizes multiple levels of both heaven and hell, and celebrate a multitude of holidays that the Zen tradition does not. Zen is a concept across Buddhist traditions, but a Zen Buddhism is it's own thing. I know the difference and I did not misspeak.

When Jason says that they are either in an alien zoo or on a prank show, he is right on both counts. An alien zoo is a strange and unearthly place you put earthly creatures to observe them. A prank show is just lying to people for public entertainment. His description was actually closer than predicting they were in the bad place.
He was never fake, never mean, cared and tried to help wherever he could. Despite his actions on earth, he genuinely deserved to be in the good place all along, he was a monk all along
Even his desire to play a perfect game of Madden is a look into his awareness and insight. Jason's in heaven, he could've easily had the game in his first try, however, he chooses to work hard for his victory. He also understands his limits he could've played a real game as a Jaguar but he understands it wouldn't be real and therefore meaningless to him.

I’ve always loved how they wrote Jason. For as “stupid” he supposedly is, his anecdotes consistently showed insight and relevance to the situation at hand and ALWAYS ended up helping the person to whom he was speaking. Just showed that you don’t have to be book smart to have true value.
Can anyone recall the last time we actually see Jason call Janet to get him something? I thought it was the drink as Chidi is waking up, but I think he already had that on him. His only sin was thoughtless spontaneity, yet he doesn't call on her for frivolous wants anymore, and I don't think he has for a lot longer than we realized. The only time he summons her in the finale is to tell her he's leaving. Yet chooses to wait to see her, not only showing restraint and patience, but treating her as if she were human
The catch you had about him explaining his readiness to move on differently to Chidi and Eleanor was brilliant. I totally missed that. I just thought it was him being a bit silly but it was clearly deliberate, explaining the same thing twice. Jason definitely got wise.
I think that the way Jason was in the end he could have stayed with Janet in the good place without suffering, but he still didn't because he knew it was his time to go. He was at peace with that, even though he knew he would have to leave someone he loved behind... When Chidi tried to stay for Eleonor it kinda made him miserable. But for Janet, Jason could stay just fine even thought he was alone during his waiting.
Jason is the only character in the show that has emotional intelligence since the beginning, granted he wasn't a perfect monk since episode 1, but unlike literally everyone else he never seems to do anything out of anger, spite or pettiness, he accepts the hand he's dealt and he's extremely respectful about it(Never has any issues with his relationship with Janet or Tahani other than those created by circumstance and brain/time reboots, he always accepted the decisions others made and just decided to talk his feelings out with one of his friends, etc). Dude is legit all positivity and pure intentions, which Janet kinda says out loud during their "funerals"
Jason calling the bad place , "an alien zoo or a prank show," isn't just realizing something is wrong, it's damn close to exactly what's going on. He just didn't assume that just because Micheal said that the good place was real he was telling the truth.
Another point to have in account is that Jason was born in poverness, so his "monkness" have to compaginate with reality. Chidi and Tahani got into more confortable lives, so they didn't face the reality like Jason and Eleanor, that found out traditional moral rules (or the classic point system) don't work for the average person. We can see that Tahani actually tried to be a monk, but for that she went to an isolated place, where everyone meditate and else, is traditional but kind of a luxury retirement village; is not casual then that Tahani and Jason were put together in the start. BTW: Jason never resent Tahani for her rich girl problems or show off, he is not the kind who tell his own story to make her feel bad, and in part is because he accepted the hand he got and because he don't think other's suffering is "less". Also: It was Jason who talk to the judge about this friend of him that take care of his family and lack the time and energy to research if the food that he buy is ecologic or based in fair trade, helping the cause of making her go to earth. I did not connect a lot with Jason during the series, because I always felt the show was afraid to go real with him, so all his story happens in the background. Even his test with the judge feel weird (the "you never ask me if you could not play" thing), because i get that the point was to confront him with how impulsive he is. But that was not a real problem before, it was play for laughs and that's it, I don't recall that he got himself or the group into a series of horrible problems because that. He even keeped his mouth close in all the versions where Michael "believe" he was a real monk, Jason never went "what? Not dude" (that would make Michael fail from second 1 and leaving us with not series BTW). So it feel weird and even when his dead, for not planning ahead, was sad he never was a problem for the people in his live in earth. And this defect was never mentioned again. But this is why I like so much the analysis online and debats, it let you rediscover the stories and even fill gasp the creators fail to adresse well.
You made a very good point in mentioning Jason's test, I feel. That was incredibly inconsistent for the show, and I think that there's a reason for it. However, that never has anything to do with Jason (unlike Chidi's indecision repeatedly making others unhappy, as we have seen), instead it has something to do with The Judge. I am currently working on a video showing just how The Judge was, by eternal being standards, a morally evil/complicity evil character. For a being that can take someone's existence into account and KNOW they are going to The Bad Place, it's pointless to give tests to see where in The Bad Place they'll go. Unless, of course, you're an eternal being that's bored and looking for entertainment.
She was definitely just in it for the entertainment. She was OBSESSED with her shows. Loved it when they brought on Timothy Olyphant because she was on a Justified kick. Which, who can blame her there.
He's not quite wise sometimes (like having some crazy plans that would not work). But one thing that Jason scores really high is the compassion. He doesn't want to hurt anyone directly (maybe destroying things sometimes with molotov cocktails). But when he sees his friend struggling, he always notice that and put their problem to his top priority list.
Someone before me already gave great reasons why Jason ISN'T a monk, but I'm very glad that this creator drew attention to the dimensions of Jason that were more than just comic relief through misunderstanding and comic relief through impulsiveness. By the end of the show, Jason has shown himself to be loyal and caring, celebratory about the differences between people, (and not-a-people) as well as acutely aware of how others are feeling. I think, more important than whether Jason was a monk is the fact that he made everyone around him better and happier. I'm just glad other people can see and appreciate the good in him instead of just laughing at him.
@@lydias342 Knowledge is the sum of everything you know. Wisdom is essentially how effectively you use your knowledge Wisdom relies on knowledge, but knowledge does not rely on wisdom. You can't be wise without having at least some intelligece, but you can be knowledgeable without using being wise.
Buddhist here. Jason is not a monk (much like Janet is not a girl or robot). The 3 practises of morality, meditation and wisdom are not restricted for monks, it's for everyone, and those who would properly learn and practise it can be deem as Buddhists. A monk is one who observes the precepts, of which there are 227 self training rules for a theravada monk. In order not to dilute the organization labeling, best not to call jason a monk of any sort. We Buddhists already use the term modern monk for monks living in the city, having facebook to help connect with disciples, gives talks online, have phds from university, or have phones to help coordinate their dhamma talks etc.

I sincerely apologise if the video in any way diluted the labelling of the organisation (which, given the existence of the video and the article that it was based upon, is, of course, already quite egregiously done). It was more meant to connect The Good Place with one of the topics that it explores, and having done some research, I found Jason to embody some of the 'values' of Buddhism. But, of course, he has not observed the precepts themselves so, in a literal way, he could not be regarded as a monk. Also, thank you! I didn't know the term of 'modern monk' was already in use, that's pretty interesting!
If anything, from an ignorant persepctive, I still defend that exactly because those are the real Buddhist things to do, he, Jason, was always deemed to be, at less, reincarnated as a Buddhist monk...

While it is definitely true that Jason is not a monk, this video helps to show that he at least was a potential monk and wasn’t afraid of teaching others his wisdom. I know very little about Buddhism but I think that Monks are teachers, of a sort, and Jason did teach, even unwittingly. The allegory is never perfect, otherwise it would be called an exact comparison. Perhaps, under the guidance and training of a true monk, Jason would have become one, but that was not his path.
If Jason is a Monk he's a very Ikkyū type of Monk. Less concerned with the strictures and conventions of monastic life that can become an impediment to enlightenment.
Not necessarily important to Jason but Micheal gifted Tahani the first bow tie he wore in episode one. His bow ties also usually match someone’s outfit (at least season 4 when I started noticing this) and I thought it was cool.

Im glad he finally got to live how he wanted and then in trying to find a necklace for Janet, he achieved that nirvana. He finally was able to let go ❤

Jason is like that kid who's so scrawny that you think you could take him in a fight, and even he thinks so to, but then you try to fight him, and suddenly he's the hulk, and he's pleasantly surprised, while you think you're weak, but in reality, Jason has been strong all along....
Claimed knowledge, not exhibited knowledge. It's just a form a technobabble that hollywood is so fond of. You need to remember, the Judge claimed to know everything as well, but her trip to Earth proved that she knew nothing. It's all empty claims.

She's like Chidi, in a way: able to grasp even the most complex things on the level of theory, but without the innate humanity to put it into any practical comprehension. In many ways, she's the opposite of Jason: he knows very little, but (by the end) understands everything.

Jason has high wis; average int I know some people probably think he has low int, but I think he's pretty smart, just applies it to his interests instead of appearing traditionally smart. I really love him
I also liked the detail wherein Jason always callsout Janet whenever he needs her but when Jason forgot the necklace and is leftout on the entrance of the gate, he instead waited for Janet to comeback instead of calling her.

His story arc is close to that of Siddhartha in the Herman Hesse novel. Siddhartha first mastered the path of Brahman or moral path, then followed the path of asceticism where he learned the essential skills of breathing/fasting/waiting, being able to be present or concentration and finally freedom from suffering through enlightenment through dharma.
Wonderful video! I absolutely adore Jason! I have a special place in my heart for characters who appear dumb, but intelligence comes in many different forms. Jason’s closing arc was always to become a modern monk, and it’s incredibly clever of the writers to be so transparent up front

Jason exhibits "Shoshin" or what the zen Buddhists call the learners mind. He is open the the myriad possibilities of the universe, his innocent nature allows him to see paths where the wise and learned only see failure.

Great video. You caught a lot more than I did, the only thing I'd add is that Jason's learning to control his impulses was a major part of his development, and I think that fits in with the Buddhist practices you outlined as well.
I believe that Jason became a monk in the finale. But more than this, I believe that all four major characters became who they were always meant to be, and who they were introduced as in the first episode. Eleanor became a defender of the hopeless by rescuing Michael and Mindy from their dead ends. Chidi became the wise instructor who helped millions of people learn ethics in a way he never succeeded in during his life. And Tahani became a truly benevolent person by becoming an architect. It took the viewer longer to realize that Chidi and Tahani weren't living up to their potential than we did for Eleanor and Jason, but all four achieved their soul's true purpose in the end.

Jason and Janet were my favourite characters. I don't know if Jason was a monk but he was the purest among them. He always thought of others and would never have done something that would intentionally hurt someone. D'Arcy Beth Carden nailed the role of Janet. The episode that she played everybody?!! She's a freaking legend!
I love this! Jason is a really wonderful character and while most of us probably didn’t notice this stuff being present from the start at first, now going back I think we’ll notice it constantly. I do love that quite early on Jason seemed to be the one using unknowingly wise practices for calming other people down or solving their problems, like when he put his hand on Michael (even though both were kinda just faking it at the time). Like, he had no idea what to do so he drew on past experiences to use an actual calming technique he saw someone else use. Many people would have possibly forgotten about that or not thought to copy it themselves.
I loved the video. Beautifully written and well cut together. I’ve also read some of your responses to other comments and I have to say that it’s really refreshing to see someone be accepting of constructive criticism. Can't believe I didn't see this video earlier. I love Jason's character as having phenomenal emotional intelligence while have low fact retention. To put in other words, very high wisdom and low intelligence. He is the very centre of the group and keeps everyone around him grounded.
This is why I can loved his character for four years. The funny dumb guy gets stale after a while. But while his being a step behind is used for comedy, his loyalty, compassion, and love are also used throughout the show. He is a simple character, but not a one dimensional one. A lot of credit to the writers and to Manny Jacinto for a complicated job presenting a "simple"(pure?) character.
I feel like Jason definitely counts as "Was always a monk", with the asterisk of "I mean, newbies aren't always good at what they do," and his journey was less about changing who he was and more about learning to act in sync with his own values

This did get me thinking that Jason’s only moral failings in life were largely due to his living in poverty. At one point Tahani recognizes this-and the fact that her wealthy upbringing ruined her-and wants to give all her money to Jason. I think it’s an important observation that Jason’s character never changed much because he didn’t really need to change, he just needed the right environment to succeed morally and spiritually
And most of those moral failings weren't all that immoral given his circumstances

I mean, this is explored in the episode when they try to save Donkey Doug/Pillboi. Upon meeting Jason's father and watching them interact, Tahani says that everything makes a lot more sense now. Just by seeing his everyday life, Tahani can much more easily understand how Jason became the person he did
Jason has emotional intelligence, more than anyone else on the show. That's why despite literally knowing everything, it was Jason that taught Janet how to love. Jason made Janet human, and thus more advance than every other Janet before her. And it's those qualities that made Janet a better friend to everyone, especially Micheal.
That's a very interesting and well put point about the domino effect of kindness and the impact Jason indirectly had on the show!

Jason is portrayed to be stupid only for comedic purposes, unlike many of the other clown characters in other shows he never messes up the plans or acts in a genuinely stupid way(except maybe the 1st Janet reboot). For example in the beginning he knows, that if he talks, then he is toast and has pretty good patience and self control to not talk.In S4 during the experiment he plays his role of a monk perfectly and never once does he create a problem for the team.
If anything he's glad to step up and act like his old self to get Chidi to start growing in that iteration.

Certain ideas would be brought up and because this show is basically perfect I'd be like "oh no, this is a tiny flaw but it kinda ruins it for me" but then they'd fix it instantly and bringing that up in the first place was all just part of the writing and the philisophical messages of the show. I hope this makes sense to somebody else.
This show just feels like it was made for me because I had the exact same questions in my head and they will show an answer that I disagree with but then that was the plan all along and THIS is really the good place so the show fixes it and perfectly shows that argument I had had in my own head. Plus Timothy Olyphant has a cameo making it extra perfect. It's freaky how much this show feels like it's for me.

Instead of simply repeating a running joke it is actually a special part of the plot and their relationship. Like think about it, the moment he saves her from hell they used that to help save her. So the silly joke phrase actually has emotional significance for the characters and us, the viewers. Reallt clever writing. This isn't just a simple show, it's amazing. Every little bit of it just fills me with joy. The writers clearly cared a lot
When you think about it this way, the other characters also became their "fake good place version". Jason spent time alone in nature waiting for Janet as a monk. Tahini became an accomplished do-gooder for the sake of good and accomplishement. Chidi is the self assured teacher of the group. Eleanor helps people selflessly
That is a very good point, Maryna, I never realised that! I guess the Bad Place/Good Place was, as they were saying at the end of the show, about bringing out a person's inner self. Ironically, those inner selves ended up being genuine representations of their 'fake' selves, well spotted!

Tahani expanded her horizons and tried and excelled in things which she considered "un-ladylike" before like carpentry, architecture and more. She always had low self esteem because of her sister and thought her only talent was throwing parties and doing charity. Like you said, she abandoned competition and learned trades and skills genuinely because she wanted to feel the joy of learning and doing it. And for many people reaching that point is really difficult. Most people get stuck up in using the thing that they love the most to compete with others.
Also, Chidi is not just "the teacher". He's someone who knows what he wants and is no longer hit with dilemma every time he's presented with choices. He decides he wants to go through the gate and he sticks to the decision. When he realizes that that decision would make Eleanor sad, he postpones the decision, not because of self doubt but for her. He learns determination.
As for Eleanor, it's like you said. She does selfless things without thinking about it or expecting credit.
The biggest irony is that Eleanor and Chidi end up actually living in that Nordic-design clown portrait house unironically and making it their home.

I would not say he has an INT of 0; rather, he knows how to grill his fish rather than list off the steps of the Maillard reaction. INT makes sure you can read the recipe; WIS is how you know just when to add the salt so as to not pull too much water from the vegetables. As solution architect for years, it's not the INT of the components that solve the problem; it's the WIS of their appropriate application that can make the solution work.

I feel like Jason is a good example of someone who doesn’t align with the standard intelligence like Chidi, but develops his emotional intelligence and wisdom to be what it always could be. He’s definitely that dumb friend that others might not get why you still hang out with until they become his friend and realize that he just tries to make life happier for people around him from a pure place of love and care for his homies.

When I started the good place i thought that heaven was really classist because Jason was a good person, just a victim of his circumstances and I think its great that the series explore that angle
I love that the four main characters were not all the same financially. You have one rich (Tahani), one comfortable middle class (Chidi), one on the lower end of middle class (Eleanor) and then one in straight up poverty. This fact really solidified that money does not play a role in a person’s ability to be morally good or virtuous
Jason is also the one who gets through to the judge on why you can't judge everyone on the same level, with his talk about the person in his dance crew who had to take care of their relatives.

A line was cut from the finale where Tahani says “Jason was kind to me. And never for any reason than that it is good to be kind” I think that’s part of Jason’s beauty. He combines pure love of living with impulsivity, which leads his train of thought to go along the lines of “oh being kind is good! That’s dope I think I’ll be kind” without a second thought. Eventually he becomes the best version of himself by telling Janet “looking good not a girl” this shows that he thought before he spoke (by remembering Janet is not a girl) but he still values kindness over intelligence and allows himself to tell Janet that it was in his other pocket.

Another sign that Jason is smart, actually, is that upon awakening in the fake Good Place, and being told he's a monk with a vow of silence, he actually manages to keep quiet and go along with it.
I feel like it could be an example of masking. Even in a junk yard school, he would have been singled out, likely bullied, for ADHD and would have learned coping mechanisms like masking.

I always wondered how Jason even got into the bad place.. he was so pure and innocent.. and definitely represented how there was something wrong with the system from the beginning..
he might have been pure of heart and had a child like innocence, but he still did things of questionable morals during his human life like stealing, violence (molotov cocktails for one) etc. Plus, the show points out many times how impulsive he was. He was just more of a chaotic neutral or sometimes chaotic good rather than chaotic evil. But also the show was about how most people are not good or evil all of the time, and the system was flawed for everyone.
By that time, everyone was going into the Bad Place because the system was flawed and broken.

Jason's biggest flex was when he realized he couldn't "save" his father but could save his friend but still loved his father for who he was. That's next level EI
If anything, his character progression was that he became more aware of how his actions affect others.
He had the capacity for selflessness but was too naive to predict the harm of his actions.

When Jason says that they are either in an alien zoo or on a prank show, he is right on both counts. An alien zoo is a strange and unearthly place you put earthly creatures to observe them. A prank show is just lying to people for public entertainment. His description was actually closer than predicting they were in the bad place.
He was never fake, never mean, cared and tried to help wherever he could. Despite his actions on earth, he genuinely deserved to be in the good place all along, he was a monk all along
Even his desire to play a perfect game of Madden is a look into his awareness and insight. Jason's in heaven, he could've easily had the game in his first try, however, he chooses to work hard for his victory. He also understands his limits he could've played a real game as a Jaguar but he understands it wouldn't be real and therefore meaningless to him.

Tahahi: Became a well respected “party planner” designing afterlives for people
Chidi: Found the answer and became the super great thinker Michael told him he was, when he was sent to the bad place because he couldn’t decide

I’ve always loved how they wrote Jason. For as “stupid” he supposedly is, his anecdotes consistently showed insight and relevance to the situation at hand and ALWAYS ended up helping the person to whom he was speaking. Just showed that you don’t have to be book smart to have true value.

I thought it was the drink as Chidi is waking up, but I think he already had that on him.
His only sin was thoughtless spontaneity, yet he doesn't call on her for frivolous wants anymore, and I don't think he has for a lot longer than we realized.
The only time he summons her in the finale is to tell her he's leaving. Yet chooses to wait to see her, not only showing restraint and patience, but treating her as if she were human

The catch you had about him explaining his readiness to move on differently to Chidi and Eleanor was brilliant. I totally missed that. I just thought it was him being a bit silly but it was clearly deliberate, explaining the same thing twice. Jason definitely got wise.
Finally my favourite himbo is getting the recognition he deserves.
I think that the way Jason was in the end he could have stayed with Janet in the good place without suffering, but he still didn't because he knew it was his time to go. He was at peace with that, even though he knew he would have to leave someone he loved behind... When Chidi tried to stay for Eleonor it kinda made him miserable. But for Janet, Jason could stay just fine even thought he was alone during his waiting.
Jason is the only character in the show that has emotional intelligence since the beginning, granted he wasn't a perfect monk since episode 1, but unlike literally everyone else he never seems to do anything out of anger, spite or pettiness, he accepts the hand he's dealt and he's extremely respectful about it(Never has any issues with his relationship with Janet or Tahani other than those created by circumstance and brain/time reboots, he always accepted the decisions others made and just decided to talk his feelings out with one of his friends, etc).
Dude is legit all positivity and pure intentions, which Janet kinda says out loud during their "funerals"
Jason calling the bad place , "an alien zoo or a prank show," isn't just realizing something is wrong, it's damn close to exactly what's going on. He just didn't assume that just because Micheal said that the good place was real he was telling the truth.
Another point to have in account is that Jason was born in poverness, so his "monkness" have to compaginate with reality. Chidi and Tahani got into more confortable lives, so they didn't face the reality like Jason and Eleanor, that found out traditional moral rules (or the classic point system) don't work for the average person. We can see that Tahani actually tried to be a monk, but for that she went to an isolated place, where everyone meditate and else, is traditional but kind of a luxury retirement village; is not casual then that Tahani and Jason were put together in the start.
BTW: Jason never resent Tahani for her rich girl problems or show off, he is not the kind who tell his own story to make her feel bad, and in part is because he accepted the hand he got and because he don't think other's suffering is "less". Also: It was Jason who talk to the judge about this friend of him that take care of his family and lack the time and energy to research if the food that he buy is ecologic or based in fair trade, helping the cause of making her go to earth.
I did not connect a lot with Jason during the series, because I always felt the show was afraid to go real with him, so all his story happens in the background. Even his test with the judge feel weird (the "you never ask me if you could not play" thing), because i get that the point was to confront him with how impulsive he is. But that was not a real problem before, it was play for laughs and that's it, I don't recall that he got himself or the group into a series of horrible problems because that. He even keeped his mouth close in all the versions where Michael "believe" he was a real monk, Jason never went "what? Not dude" (that would make Michael fail from second 1 and leaving us with not series BTW). So it feel weird and even when his dead, for not planning ahead, was sad he never was a problem for the people in his live in earth. And this defect was never mentioned again.
But this is why I like so much the analysis online and debats, it let you rediscover the stories and even fill gasp the creators fail to adresse well.
You made a very good point in mentioning Jason's test, I feel. That was incredibly inconsistent for the show, and I think that there's a reason for it. However, that never has anything to do with Jason (unlike Chidi's indecision repeatedly making others unhappy, as we have seen), instead it has something to do with The Judge. I am currently working on a video showing just how The Judge was, by eternal being standards, a morally evil/complicity evil character. For a being that can take someone's existence into account and KNOW they are going to The Bad Place, it's pointless to give tests to see where in The Bad Place they'll go. Unless, of course, you're an eternal being that's bored and looking for entertainment.
She was definitely just in it for the entertainment. She was OBSESSED with her shows. Loved it when they brought on Timothy Olyphant because she was on a Justified kick. Which, who can blame her there.
He's not quite wise sometimes (like having some crazy plans that would not work). But one thing that Jason scores really high is the compassion. He doesn't want to hurt anyone directly (maybe destroying things sometimes with molotov cocktails). But when he sees his friend struggling, he always notice that and put their problem to his top priority list.
Someone before me already gave great reasons why Jason ISN'T a monk, but I'm very glad that this creator drew attention to the dimensions of Jason that were more than just comic relief through misunderstanding and comic relief through impulsiveness. By the end of the show, Jason has shown himself to be loyal and caring, celebratory about the differences between people, (and not-a-people) as well as acutely aware of how others are feeling. I think, more important than whether Jason was a monk is the fact that he made everyone around him better and happier. I'm just glad other people can see and appreciate the good in him instead of just laughing at him.

You can't be wise without having at least some intelligece, but you can be knowledgeable without using being wise.
Buddhist here. Jason is not a monk (much like Janet is not a girl or robot). The 3 practises of morality, meditation and wisdom are not restricted for monks, it's for everyone, and those who would properly learn and practise it can be deem as Buddhists.
A monk is one who observes the precepts, of which there are 227 self training rules for a theravada monk. In order not to dilute the organization labeling, best not to call jason a monk of any sort. We Buddhists already use the term modern monk for monks living in the city, having facebook to help connect with disciples, gives talks online, have phds from university, or have phones to help coordinate their dhamma talks etc.

I sincerely apologise if the video in any way diluted the labelling of the organisation (which, given the existence of the video and the article that it was based upon, is, of course, already quite egregiously done). It was more meant to connect The Good Place with one of the topics that it explores, and having done some research, I found Jason to embody some of the 'values' of Buddhism. But, of course, he has not observed the precepts themselves so, in a literal way, he could not be regarded as a monk.

If anything, from an ignorant persepctive, I still defend that exactly because those are the real Buddhist things to do, he, Jason, was always deemed to be, at less, reincarnated as a Buddhist monk...

While it is definitely true that Jason is not a monk, this video helps to show that he at least was a potential monk and wasn’t afraid of teaching others his wisdom. I know very little about Buddhism but I think that Monks are teachers, of a sort, and Jason did teach, even unwittingly. The allegory is never perfect, otherwise it would be called an exact comparison. Perhaps, under the guidance and training of a true monk, Jason would have become one, but that was not his path.
If Jason is a Monk he's a very Ikkyū type of Monk. Less concerned with the strictures and conventions of monastic life that can become an impediment to enlightenment.
Not necessarily important to Jason but Micheal gifted Tahani the first bow tie he wore in episode one. His bow ties also usually match someone’s outfit (at least season 4 when I started noticing this) and I thought it was cool.

He seemed already like such a monk character. Despite the chaos always surrounding him, he was vibing. He had such a peaceful air in the clouds vibe since day 1. Im glad he finally got to live how he wanted and then in trying to find a necklace for Janet, he achieved that nirvana. He finally was able to let go ❤

Jason is like that kid who's so scrawny that you think you could take him in a fight, and even he thinks so to, but then you try to fight him, and suddenly he's the hulk, and he's pleasantly surprised, while you think you're weak, but in reality, Jason has been strong all along....
Jason's character successfully shows why knowledge and wisdom are two different things.
Jason is the definition of a dnd character having low intelligence but high wisdom

You need to remember, the Judge claimed to know everything as well, but her trip to Earth proved that she knew nothing. It's all empty claims.

She's like Chidi, in a way: able to grasp even the most complex things on the level of theory, but without the innate humanity to put it into any practical comprehension.
In many ways, she's the opposite of Jason: he knows very little, but (by the end) understands everything.
This is the Jason appreciation that UA-cam needs.
Im so glad to see my boy Jason getting the love he deserves. Hes my favorite character and also my favorite character arc. His personality doesnt change, his viewpoint does. He's an excellent portrayal of "Growth without Change"

His story arc is close to that of Siddhartha in the Herman Hesse novel. Siddhartha first mastered the path of Brahman or moral path, then followed the path of asceticism where he learned the essential skills of breathing/fasting/waiting, being able to be present or concentration and finally freedom from suffering through enlightenment through dharma.

Great video. You caught a lot more than I did, the only thing I'd add is that Jason's learning to control his impulses was a major part of his development, and I think that fits in with the Buddhist practices you outlined as well.

I believe that Jason became a monk in the finale. But more than this, I believe that all four major characters became who they were always meant to be, and who they were introduced as in the first episode. Eleanor became a defender of the hopeless by rescuing Michael and Mindy from their dead ends. Chidi became the wise instructor who helped millions of people learn ethics in a way he never succeeded in during his life. And Tahani became a truly benevolent person by becoming an architect. It took the viewer longer to realize that Chidi and Tahani weren't living up to their potential than we did for Eleanor and Jason, but all four achieved their soul's true purpose in the end.

Well argued video. I've always loved the Jason character and after watching this vid, I guess I need to go back and actually finish watching the show.
Jason and Janet were my favourite characters. I don't know if Jason was a monk but he was the purest among them. He always thought of others and would never have done something that would intentionally hurt someone. D'Arcy Beth Carden nailed the role of Janet. The episode that she played everybody?!! She's a freaking legend!

I love this! Jason is a really wonderful character and while most of us probably didn’t notice this stuff being present from the start at first, now going back I think we’ll notice it constantly. I do love that quite early on Jason seemed to be the one using unknowingly wise practices for calming other people down or solving their problems, like when he put his hand on Michael (even though both were kinda just faking it at the time). Like, he had no idea what to do so he drew on past experiences to use an actual calming technique he saw someone else use. Many people would have possibly forgotten about that or not thought to copy it themselves.

the thing with Buddhism is that there isnt just one form of buddhism
buddhism to me is about self reflection, self acceptance, and being one with who you are as a person

Can't believe I didn't see this video earlier. I love Jason's character as having phenomenal emotional intelligence while have low fact retention. To put in other words, very high wisdom and low intelligence.
He is the very centre of the group and keeps everyone around him grounded.
This is why I can loved his character for four years. The funny dumb guy gets stale after a while. But while his being a step behind is used for comedy, his loyalty, compassion, and love are also used throughout the show.
He is a simple character, but not a one dimensional one.
A lot of credit to the writers and to Manny Jacinto for a complicated job presenting a "simple"(pure?) character.

Jason Is the only reason i've watched the entire serie.
sadly for me was the opposite, it literally hurt to see him in each and every scene, was fun at first, but got old really fast.
I feel like Jason definitely counts as "Was always a monk", with the asterisk of "I mean, newbies aren't always good at what they do," and his journey was less about changing who he was and more about learning to act in sync with his own values
