I probably should've made my train tutorial start with giant red letters that say, "DON'T MAKE BIDIRECTIONAL TRAIN NETWORKS UNLESS YOU'RE ALREADY AN EXPERT"
@@AIexRAwesomethat always confused me. Don’t chain rail signals just follow whatever the next rail signal does? So if you have rail signals at the exits then they will never know that a train is at the intersection until it has already left and then the chain rail signal won’t update until the train has already left? Btw I’m very new and I’ve been getting by on my first world with just normal rail signals
@@aggressivefox454 Basically the reason you need chain signals everywhere but the exit is because you want the train going in to be able to tell whether or not it has the space to completely clear the whole intersection. If a train stops to wait for another train in the middle of the crossed tracks, then it will end up blocking trains that normally could have continued without waiting. This increases throughput and helps avoid deadlocks, where you inadvertently make two trains trying to leave actually block EACHOTHER which you'll have to fix manually. The chain signals pass their "hey is the next block open??" back through eachother, all the way to the beginning, making trains wait there instead of in the middle. If the normal signal at the exit was a chain signal instead, you're basically saying to the train "Hey, wait until the whole intersection is clear, and then look ahead 1 more block past the intersection and wait until it's clear" which doesn't make any sense. There's an exception however, if the block after the intersection is not big enough for your train to wait in without blocking the previous intersection, then it will 'hang its ass out' and still block the intersection even after going through it. This is where an additional chain signal could be useful on the exit.
"I just simplified everything, because it was taking up too much time" You did it, Amphibian. For a brief moment, you truly understood the duty of the Engineer. The trains taught you.
The learning curve for train signals is amazing. It's a vertical cliff covered in barbed wire that it's completely impenetrable until you accidentally find a foothold and realize it was waist-high the entire time. Completely zero-to-hero once it clicks.
I occasionally see a negative review on Steam where they craft everything by hand and complain the game is slow, so I'll say there's at least *one* wrong way to play Factorio
This is my favourite answer, because your factory either works, or it doesn't. If it doesn't, then make it work. If it does, then keep playing and having fun lol.
It's not the ending that matters but the journey Ambiguous Amphibian took us on like having a _maximum comfy hug_ at 2 am only to awaken 7 hours later unembraced but still _extremely comfy_ 😀😌
I recently played Factorio for the first time and realised how complicated I'm making it. I have dual train tracks, passing lanes. multiple signals, looking ahead etc. It's fun but you're quite right in that it can eat up so much of your time. The signal tutorial can be rough too but once it clicks you realise it's not all that complicated.
Your suffering brought me joy. I am unsure whether this makes the joy less valuable as it came from suffering, or the suffering more worthwhile as it lead to joy. I shall ponder upon this.
Good job. 2 things, one, tier 3 production models (the red ones) are better in the rocket silo than speed modules, as they save you resources which in turn saves you way more time. Two, if you thought the modules where complicated & or annoying in vanilla, don't ever go having a look at the mod bob's modules, that is a lovely hell if you like logic torture & i didn't even get to the final tiers of those modules 😅.
The nice thing about construction robots is that when you realize your base is a tangled mess with not enough space, you can just tear everything down, and redesign it. You lose nothing but time as long as you put your fluids in tanks that don't get deconstructed (and your defenses can hold up while doing it). For spidertrons, I fill my own armor with lasers, and the spidertron with lasers and shields, saving those expensive rockets. Run circles around bases to destroy nests before finishing off all of the biters, so you don't need to keep up with the rate of new ones spawning.
Did you call the logistics robots "servitors"? That would be metal to replace them with floating be-candled skulls ala 40k. It would also raise questions about where you got thousands of skulls whilst alone on xenos inhabited planet.
This game needs an update where, shortly after the biters witness a Servoskull and live to tell the tale, they begin to mutate (speed of which is directly correlated to Pollution) and develop wings, allowing them to jump up cliffs, over walls, and across rivers, or something similar with the spotted and the long-range artillery pieces, maybe developing a biomass that slows you down and speeds them up after witnessing concrete, or any number of things! Anyway, this was a very fun series, at least on my end!
By the time I get to the point where I am making purple science my factory is a horrible conglomeration that runs by the will of the Omnisiah alone and I have no idea how any of it works and it is GLORIOUS
Whats with so many challenge youtubers making compilations of their past challenges? This is like the third youtuber I know who have made more than 1 compilation of their challenge runs this year.
Algorithm stuff. The idea is that UA-cam goes, "oh, you like this guy? You'll love their long format videos!". TheSpiffingBrit made a video explaining the whole idea not too long ago
I also recommend The Spiffing Brit's recent video. Basically the current algorithm really likes incredibly long videos for somewhat involved reasons that involve people who fell asleep watching UA-cam. So UA-camrs noticed those types of videos do well (most likely not realizing the real reason why), so they make them because it's practically a free video the audience seems to love

2:45 "We had demonstrated the awesome power of capitalism" Ahem, may a see the receipts for every artilley shell? No? You didn't buy them? You... produced them in a non-competetively built factory that non-competetively produces goods without a single currency exchange? You monster!
I don't think this is a mod, but there's a remote you can use to manually aim artillery. Your auto targeting range is actually half of your manual aim range so you probably could have moved the train into position and then manually aimed the shells without any extra setup like landfill. I learned this from a Michael Hendricks series who is another amazing Factorio creator. That series is the one where he completely wipes the map of biters without letting more spawn in.

Honestly, doing this kind of playthrough for your first time is super impressive. The default game is enough to drive most people a little crazy.

This is the most terrifying factorio video I've seen in years, yet somehow it was a beautiful and magical experience.
