- A common discussed aspect of Scream in 1996 is the friendship/relationship between Billy Loomis & Stu Macher. The discussion has been somewhat mixed in subtext. Kevin Williamson shared his thoughts on the notion that the pair were romantically linked last year. In today's video, I assess what Kevin Williamson said and anaylse the first Scream movie and give you guys my interpretation on the dynamic between the pair.

I would like to reiterate, Kevin Williamson who wrote Scream (1996) has confirmed that Billy & Stu were based off two homoexual serial killers. This isn't a theory any more. They were, for the most part, based off of two gay men.
Billy & Stu really remind me of Eric & Dylan the Columbine killers. Eric was dominant over Dylan. But Dylan very much enjoyed the killing. Whether he was manipulated or not. Though, I feel that Stu was more submissive than Dylan was. You can study the Columbine case and come up with your own conclusion. Maybe you could do a future video on it. That would be phenomenal!
He also wanted Stu to comeback from the dead and raise a cult of Ghostfaces... he is not the be all end all of Scream unless it was printed, produced and screened.

I agree with you, I think Stu was very likely bisexual. Whether Billy was as well or it was _purely_ a means of manipulation is more difficult to interpret. Stu being interested in Billy romantically though makes it easier to see how he didn't mind Tatum being killed. 😬

Exactly, but maybe Billy didn't return Stu's feelings. He took advantage and manipulated Stu to help him commit all the murders. Stu hated Sidney because he wished to be in her place (to be Billy's boyfriend).
I could see both maybe being into each other, but I think it could also be a strong symbiotic relationship that transcends romance and friendship and is this intense connection by their issues that gives them this tension that seems sex/romantic.

I always felt that Stu was in love with Billy, and Billy knew this, and used it to manipulate Stu into helping him kill people. It’s nice to know I wasn’t wrong.
Randy says Billy was a "homo-repressed mama's boy" in his final phone call with Ghostface before Ghostface/Mrs. Loomis stabs him. The homoeroticism between Billy & Stu may have been subtext in the first movie, but by the second movie, Randy was making it text.

I don’t think they were gay exactly. I don’t think they were particularly defined in their sexuality either way. Stu seemed like he could go either way.. maybe more bisexual or pansexual but I think Billy was just a genuine psychopath that used his sexuality as a manipulation tool. I think it’s completely possible that he used that on both Stu and Sidney.

Agreed. And I think sometimes people overemphasize the romantic aspect of relationships. Sure, Stu could have loved Billy and been happy to kill for him, but that doesn't mean that that love had a sexual component. That being said, as a queer man, I would love to claim Stu - he's my favourite character of all the Scream movies and I want them to bring him back so badly.

I can see Stu being infatuated with Billy. The cool, confident, bad guy, everyone fancies or wants to hang out with and he chose him - Stu, the class clown - as a friend. So he was probably desperate to please him and keep him as a friend.
The lines then easily blurred between wanting to be like Billy and wanting to be with Billy.

In Scream 4, Charlie helps Jill carry out the murders because of his feelings for her, I think this is also a nod to theory of Stu possibly having feelings for Billy since Scream 4 is basically a recreation of Scream (1996).

YES, this also applies to Richie and Amber, every scream movie that was trying to recreate the original in some way, either as a remake or a requel, the killers are revealed to be in a romantic relationship, and they always have somewhat similar personalities to billy and stu. For example, Jill = Billy, Charlie = Stu, and Richie = Billy, and Amber = Stu

The third act scene where they stab each other so intimately and with specific instruction has GOT to be an allegory for sexual penetration. Also, think about who was under the mask during the attacks. Sidney attacked by Stu twice and Tatum killed by Billy. They went after each other's girlfriends in an act of sacrifice to their budding homoerotic relationship... or at least that's how Stu may have saw it.

I think Stu's lines were blurred between bestfriend and crush.
Personally, I think Stu might've not known what he himself was feeling, he couldn't see the lines. Billy knew this and used it to manipulate him and basically carry out the murders while he played them with the voice, the calls and taunting them like that.
In short, I think Stu might've been inlove with Billy, and Billy took advantage of that.
I could see Stu being bi. Maybe Billy, but I think Billy would manipulate anyone in any way he saw necessary. I don’t think it really matters, and I say that as a lesbian. That being said, it wouldn’t surprise me if Stu had a thing for Billy and Billy saw that he could use that. He manipulated almost everyone around him.
I think that stu most likely had slight feelings for billy, it shows in some scenes where stu might look at billy in a certain way. I don't believe billy had feeling's for Stu I'd say he would've manipulated Stu's feelings and mental health to convince him to help him commit the murders
Here's my analysis as a gay man who's sexual awakening was either Scream or IKWYDLS haha. Horror did something to me.
I think Stu was definitely bisexual and dealing with gay repression, but Billy I feel is either 100% straight or female-leaning bi/pan. Billy has been shown and hinted multiple times to be attracted to women via Sidney, Christina, and the girls he was flirting with in the video rental store. He felt entitled to Sidney's virginity and while it couldve been more about power, the way he feels her up and kisses her all over each time they made out implies he was pretty into it.
Imo Stu was gay or bisexual and dealing with repressing the gay part of him as well as his desire to murder, and Billy used that to enact his revenge. Once Roman told him to find a fall guy, he immediately knew he could use Stu's attraction to him to his advantage.

Billy obviously used Stu, but I don't think it was his attraction, cause wouldn't he have admitted that to Sydney on the phone during the finale, instead of just simply saying peer pressure? I think the writer wrote them to be similar to the gay killers, in the sense that they're two close men killing others. Why else is Stu solely into women like Casey, Tatum, and even Sydney? Stu's relationship with Billy is more like Gaston and LeFou to me, since Stu wants to be a cool guy like Billy, so he let's himself be peer pressured into killing, since it could make him into a famous victim.
If anything I would bet they experimented with each other. Two people in that intimate and close a relationship, at that age would've no doubt at least tried sexual things with each other. There would be a deep understanding between them, sharing with each other what they can share with no one else and spending all that time together planning and doing things that create tons of adrenaline.
I feel very strongly that billy is bisexual and stu is gay.

I am of the LGBTQ community and I have to say… It very well could’ve been but they are ultimately still friends. If anything though, if it was so, it would be on Stu’s part and he is bisexual but more straight. Billy would act on it to use that against him.
They were crazy enough to kill. They may easily have cheated on their girlfriends with each other which Stu hard a softer spot for him to go along with him on the murder spree.
Them stabbing each other in front of Sidney can seem to symbolize something else too especially when she is like “you sick fucks, you’ve seen one too many movies”.
Sidney also asked Stu of his motive and that secrecy that loomed when you had a lover in secret, he deflects by saying peer pressure…. Instead of saying he’s in love with Billy.

Due to it being hard being gay in the 90s still. You can even see the hint of underground attitude underneath how sadistic Billy stabs Stu. It almost symbolizes the shame he reluctantly feels in his feelings towards Stu.
Two other things, Tatum seemed to wear the pants in the relationship with Stu. He didn’t seem to care as much when she was killed… and by that time, there was so much build up tension from Billy towards Tatum and the hint of jealousy on his part for Tatum being Stu’s girlfriend was icing on the cake after he overheard the insults she would tell Sidney about him.
That vicious Stu-Sidney fight almost brings out a raging jealousy from Stu’s perspective as she is Billy’s girlfriend and he has been jealous of her the entire time, yet attracted to her too.
Stu has always spawned those eccentric characters like Mickey, Charlie and Amber later on….
The elements where there to make it seem that way, and if anything, it’s more on Stu’s part for bisexuality and Billy would use it to manipulate. IT WOULD DEFINITELY MAKE SENSE and can be used in a scream later for confirmation as much as the puzzle fits!

I think Neve Campbell was ask a question about Billy & Stu if they were gay I forgot what she said but she was ask that a lot but to me they were not gay just two sadistic and twisted boys taking pleasure in killing people.

My best friend in high school and I were very similar to billy and stu's friendship, were said a lot of gay things. But we're both very straight. So they way they act around eachother isn't enough of an excuse to see them as gay.

Stu was very child like in a way, if Billy exerted power over him and pulled the strings through manipulating his feelings...wouldn't surprise me at all. I just can't with this video. First off I am gay and nearly 50. My payday is pretty good. I've had years of practice and look for clues the casual observer would not notice. All the aside, there is no evidence of it in the movie. Kevin can say what he will but he did not elude to it and you cannot infer fatness on two guys who share a strong connection. My best friend has been my best friend for thirty years. He is as straight as I am gay. We know the best and worst of each other, but do not mistake closeness for gayness. Bottom line is it was never stated in the movie so you cannot just create crap because younwant to. If Kevin wanted Billy and Stu to be gay he would have made a point about it. And please for the love of God if a man had a girlfriend or fucks a woman on a regular bases, it says nothing about his sexuality except for that he is fluid. I think, as a non-straight cis-man that it falls between friends and lovers. I don’t think it’s real love, but more or so two guys who may have bisexual or any other type of m/m romantic/sexual feelings, but there is something there. A good comparison I want to make is the 2003 movie Thirteen. It stars two young middle schoolers, one who actually help write the movie and in the movie they kiss each other. Now the movie is about two girls who have this very toxic and intense relationship that honestly is ver emotional and very strong. So the actresses actually addressed them maybe being gay and while I don’t think they discouraged the notion they could have had romantic feelings, they said it was more or so a big passionate relationship that was something that kind of transcended love and friendship and was just something that showed how you can be so obsessed with your friend as a friend that you feel similar to maybe being in a relationship.
So taking that Logic to Billy and Stu, I think this need for blood and violence and their close friendship likely had some kind of sick relationship that could be like love, but maybe wasn’t it exactly. I mean I had a friend in high school who was a girl and literally everyone thought I was dating her, because we hung out so much and we’re so close, and while I’ll admit I did feel something between us wasn’t just friend like we didn’t really like each other sexually and not much romantically (I don’t like submissive people, which she was and she had many likes I didn’t fit either). I mean we slept together in bed after our Junior prom, even though my mom and stepdad were in the room, the only action I got was getting hit by her arm.

Do I think Billy and Stu were gay? No! Do I think they had a relationship outside of just murdering folks? I do. Both men had genuine attraction towards women even if they ended up killing most of their lovers. However something about Billy and Stu's relationship didn't feel quite platonic but they definitely were not gay. Bisexual? Pansexual? Possibly but certainly not gay
In my opinion, Billy is most likely straight. Stu, who could be Bi or Pan, seems like he might have some feelings for Billy, but they don't have many interactions on-screen. Stu getting all cozy up on Billy's shoulder would probably be the only reason why I thought he was LGBTQ+ at all.

Y’all know it’s serious when my dad who’s not a big fan of gay people even thought/knew they had some gay thing going on..
I personally never really saw it. They were simply psychopaths who were doing it for the trill and fun - and were best friends. There's a case of argument for Stu but definitely not for Billy, he was too keen on his goals not to mention manipulative that he most likely would've betrayed Stu if the time came.
Personally, I never got the feeling that Stu or Billy were in love, or that Stu had feelings for Billy. Even after reading the original script for Scream, which at the time was titled 'Scary Movie', there was a scene in there where Billy was talking about raising Stu's self esteem. So I suppose that could be seen as Stu being easy to manipulate and Billy just used that. I've seen the movie multiple times, and other than that look Stu gives Billy before the final confrontation, I just don't think there was anything there besides two murderous psychopaths. I've seen a lot of people talking about this, but to me it just doesn't carry the same weight that people are saying it does.

Nah Billy was definitely not gay and is clearly a symbolic stand in for the concept of toxic male heterosexuality. I understand that a lot of people were pushing for the false sense that they were gay but in reality I don’t think they were, I think it’s because they were both guys who were just insane, but it came off as looking like a slight gay relationship, but no way does any signs point to them as having a secret relationship.
I think Stu was in love with Billy and that was his Motive (that and the fact that he was mentally unwell). And i think Billy had some physical attraction to Stu but there wasn't any strong romantic love there because Billy was psychotic and wasn't capable of being super attached to people.

Interesting discussion. When this came up I was totally thinking the Wayan’s brothers Scary Movie parody plot. Inspiration from it maybe ?
I took it as being a sprt of infatuation. Like it could be a kind of love, but perhaps more like being a soulmate, but not someone each would innately be attracted to.
I mean I was a gay 14 year kid, so my ears were pricked for gay subtext at the time. I didn't get a love vibe, but I did get an obsessive vibe from Stu in particular, but also Billy a bit.
I think Stu is a sociopath, he doesn’t have lovey dovey feelings for Billy, but like, if their killing spree was successful I could see Stu putting the moves on Billy after the dust settles out of bloodlust, like, I’ve seen that some killers get aroused after and so they’d both possibly express that lent up energy with each other, I don’t think they’d date and be out together, but if they were successful and Scream 2 was about their friend group instead of Sids there would be gay jokes aplenty
I don’t think Stu loved Casey or Tatum, his ego was hurt when she left him for a football player, and Tatum was just an alibi + a way to get close to Sidney
I personally think Stu was pulling the strings more than Billy, I think Roman showed Billy the stuff about his mom and then Billy went and found Stu, then once Stu knew the general idea he started coming up with specific plans
Like, I think Roman set the stage but Stu was calling the shots after he got the plot synopsis if that makes sense, and then Billy is just be subtly and not so subtly manipulated into doing this or that
I think Billy was used to doing what his mother told him so when she left he became someone else’s soldier for chaos, Romans, then Stu’s
We all thought that. Even before SCARY MOVIE 2000 made that point. It would've explained everything, wouldn't it?
I still contend no because while he may have based the characters off of gay killers, Stu and Billy have so little interaction outside of the climax, you have to wonder what conversations happened. It sounds like Williamson had his own idea while writing the characters but the plot is a little murky; when asked why Stu went along, his only response is peer pressure, but that could mean anything. I think the moment when Billy is answering Sid about their motive and how he lists characters with no motive, I think that contributed to how he may have manipulated. But in the end, some things are unnecessary to know.
In the script the afternoon before the party Stu and Billy actually have a talk just for a brief moment making sure everything was set for the party later that evening and it showed that Billy was the dominant and Stu was submissive (nothing sexual) but it showed the puppet and puppet master

Didnt randy call Billy "homo-repressed mama's boy"? Maybe thats another hint from williamson in scream 2. But maybe its just randy's jealousy towards him
One of the worst things you could imply about a man in the 90's is that he could be gay. Randy was pissed when he said that, and using gayness as an insult was rife in movies at the time. I dont think it meant anything.

I think at MOST Stu was bi. I don't buy that Billy was gay, and Stu is all over Tatum, and making comments about women, and then to Sidney during his fight with her. I think he was sort of infatuated with Billy in a hero worshipping way, or bi-curious. Just because Kevin Williamson based them off a couple gay killers, doesn't mean they actually are. As an artist myself (I mostly design, and sculpt, but I write a bit too), what something is creatively based on or influenced by changes a lot (usually) by the time it reaches it's final form. At the very least I don't think Billy's gay, and Scream 5 further proves that to be the case, as he even had a daughter, Sam. I think Billy was planning on killing Stu. Just my interpretation, but it sounds like Williamson encourages people to view it through their own lens.
@KH Yeah I agree, I don't think Billy has "done" anything with him though, lol. I don't buy that for a second, you can tell Billy is trying not to just outright kill him in that kitchen scene, and through the whole movie he's getting annoyed with him, smacking him, etc..
In Scream 2 Randy does say that Billy was homo repressed.
Hard to say, I never considered this but when you rewatch the movie there are definitely small subtle hints that provide clues.

I don’t think they were lovers but here’s the closest thing that could come to it imo….. Maybe Stu was confused or questioning his sexuality so to speak (not sure if he liked guys or girls or both). Maybe he might have had feelings for Billy and Billy might have sensed it. Billy is very manipulative so maybe he used Stu’s crush on him to his advantage (getting Stu to do what he wants). Plus I think that it’s most likely Billy might have hated Casey Becker because it is cannon that Casey and Stu dated. Like if Stu had a crush on Billy but then Casey comes along and Stu maybe does end up liking her (which threatens Billy’s control of Stu) that gives Billy a motive to hate Casey. Plus we all heard she dumped Stu for Steve but what if Casey dumped Stu because of his toxic friendship with Billy (or that was a huge part of why she left Stu). Plus everyone thinks Stu killed Casey (he had motive) but Tatum said that he was with her that night…. Which means it had to have been Billy who killed Casey (and Casey did seem to know who it was when she pulled off the mask). Plus ghostface chokes Casey and before stabbing her had the knife up to the air….. Billy does the same thing with Sidney later on so that’s another possibility that it was Billy who killed Casey. Plus it’s also ironic that Billy killer Tatum (another girlfriend of Stu). Just a thought, just my opinion and it’s not cannon 😁.
@KH yeah I agree with everything you said but I also think Stu probably didn’t know about Roman and Christina because if Billy didn’t tell Stu about his motive (Maureen’s affair with his father) then he sure as 🔥 wasn’t going to tell Stu about Roman and Christina.

I don't know if it was like a relationship in a consistent or traditional way but it definitely felt like stu was incredibly enamored with billy almost charmed in a way where stu would probably do whatever billy asks him there might have been some sexual attraction on Stu's half but I have trouble believing someone like billy could really care for anyone in that capacity they probably had a bond but I'm sure at least for billy it was on a very superficial level

I guess the gay theory of Billy and Stu is true. Even Scary Movie had the characters of Bobby and Ray who represented Billy and Stu as gay characters. The Wayans Brothers seen the connection from the beginning lol
