Let's be honest, Gordon Ryan is doing what he is doing on his feet for one reason: he doesn't wrestle very well. (A good-to-great HS wrestler would beat him in a pure takedown game, and any college wrestler would do the same.) And he is getting away with it for two reasons: 1) Most of his opponents are similarly skilled in the takedown game. 2) All of his opponents are scared to death of what happens when they get to the ground. In short, he doesn't need to know how to wrestle very well to be the best submission grappler in the world. Wrestling has plenty to offer the BJJ world, but the rule set dictates the techniques/strategies that are dominant. On a side note, if you watch the Gordon Ryan v Pat Downey match you can see Ryan does actually know how to wrestle better than what he is showing here, even though he gets picked apart by Downey. He just doesn't need to worry about getting taken down in most submission grappling rule-sets because it has so little impact on the outcome of the contest. So, if you are going to learn any lessons from analyzing GR's wrestling it is this: become the most feared submission grappler in the world, and you won't have to defend legitimate takedown attacks, which will allow you to have a lazy standup game where you bully people and they are still not taking you down.😉
But that applies not only to GR but just anyone who does nogi as well. It's the same logic on why mma boxing seems "wrong" by pure pugilism standards because the threats are completely different and you need to do some things "wrong" to get it "right" In short he has phenomenal BJJ-for -Wrestling because there isn't any merit for him to study wrestling-for-wrestling. Pat downey and bo nickal both look nothing like their wrestling selves once the bjj rules were in place- they were also hesitant and scared and sloppy and amateurish. BJJ ruleset bo nickal doesn't shoot the way wrestling bo nickal does, and he gets kani basami'd so many times in that match it almost looked like a meme. So yes, his wrestling sucks by wrestling standards - but should he be judged by that standard?
what's the point of the takedown if it gets u to a more dangerous position? wrestling's end goal is the takedown, pin the opponent to the ground. bjj end goal is to immobilize ur opponent
@@jojotwice8918 You asked, "whats the point of the takedown?" What is the context? Are you asking, what is the point of the takedown within a BJJ ruleset?
I agree with most of your points in that most BJJ guys would get toyed with in an actual wresting match (I.e. Gordon Ryan vs Pat Downey). However, we have seen high level wrestlers, such as PJ Barch who wrestled D1 for University of Pennsylvania, who were still beaten on the feet in a submission grappling tournament. Firstly, PJ wasn’t able to take down Kade Ruotolo and had a very close match against JT Torres. Both of those guys had never wrestled prior to BJJ and both of them stood their own against PJ, getting good offense and Kade even beating him. There are even stories of some world class wrestlers who were invited to train at New Wave with Gordon and Danaher, and would spar in an ADCC takedowns ruleset (so no pulling guard). And supposedly got dismantled by the BJJ guys even in takedowns. The nature of a BJJ match (it’s long duration and the threat of guillotines) means that the hunched over position seen in wrestling would be too exhausting , since wrestlers only have to go for a couple minutes at a time. ADCC may go on for 20-30 minutes. The upright stance means that regular shots are harder (and hence sloppier) with more distance needed to cover. Also, hand fighting tends to be less committed with more “feeling out” than in wrestling, making it seem sloppy. To summarise, due to the ruleset and not necessarily a massive skill discrepancy (although there likely is some), wrestling requires a more explosive and fast paced style in which a crouched posture is beneficial, while BJJ requires a more upright style which tends towards longer and drawn out engagements which can seem sloppy.
It's weird to know that I taught myself a watered-down version of this tactic for folkstyle wrestling. Very glad to see advanced versions of this to evolve my technique. Thanks, YT algorithm!
Awesome breakdown ... Looking for a stand-up analysis for a long time since I new to BJJ and want a simple concept with high % low risk attacks . Keep it up man 👌
Let's be honest, wrestling in BJJ is terrible. It's mostly just bad tie ups that lead to nothing. Everyone in ADCC got thrown with uchi mata because for some reason we can't get it through our heads that grabbing the waist from any position other than from behind is just begging to get tossed. With all the forward pressure Gordon was giving Pedro a little bit of proper elbow control with a side duck should have given him the back but everyone just clears instead of attacking. Also, can we stop the interlocking of fingers crap? Everyone does it because everyone else does it. It's not a grip. Rant over. Lol
The state of standup in BJJ is definitely… not great. Unfortunately, a lot of the culture within BJJ seems to prop up the idea that they are gaining ground on the wrestlers/judoka/sambists, etc. of the world. Frankly, nothing I’ve seen depicts growth anywhere near that. I wouldn’t ever expect BJJ guys to be creme of the crop stand up guys, but I also would expect… a lot more than this? I mean this is the best guy in the sport by an absolute mile and I’d bet an intermediate wrestler in his weight class could probably run shop on him in the stand up. Wrestler would absolutely get submitted on the ground, but I’d bet money on his ability to take Gordon down pretty much with impunity if this was his game plan. I also don’t know if this wrestling is necessarily “from” Danaher. I suspect he probably told Gordon to do what Gordon does which is play the excruciatingly long pressure game and make people tired. Leaning heavy on people and tossing out foot sweeps isn’t really what I’d call a “system” lol. Danaher is well-connected enough to bring in stand up guys and clearly understands systemization as evidenced by his groundwork coaching. This, to me, doesn’t seem like it’s a fleshed out strategy so much as it’s just Gordon Ryan being Gordon Ryan. And honestly why would it be? Throws-tragically-just don’t really win BJJ matches.
Eh, if you know what you are doing a waistlock from the front or side can be very powerful in wrestling. My only takedowns that were effective were a Tani otoshi from a side bearhug and leg reaps, mat returns, and lat drops from the front.
@@fennec812 I'm heavily interested in stand up for MMA and real world, but I don't think Danaher and Gordon are trying to redevelop takedown systems from scratch. I think they do have a strategy and it involves what was said at the beginning. They're attempting to create an effort and energy expenditure imbalance while being defensively sound.. that's all. But it's starting at standing. Because of that, being incredible wrestlers, judokas, or sambists will not suit their goals. I think Gordon is doing exactly what him and John planned out. Coincidentally, It's the exact gameplan one of the greatest MMA fighters, who IS an incredible wrestler, judoka, and sambist, uses: "I'm going to make him tired, and maul him inside the cage" -Khabib Nurmagomedov
I hear you but that's also like saying that boxing in MMA is terrible - it is, but only because we judge it by boxing standards, because of all the "wrong " things that are done are necessary to prevent other stuff in MMA that are not anticipated in a traditional boxing ruleset. Same thing with wrestling and Judo in BJJ, they're always more messy, awkward, and even poor - but we see a similar level of poorness from when practitioners who look good in wrestling/judo hit the mats when it's a bjj ruleset. Satoshi Iishi is brilliant but doesn't exactly look like an olympic judoka in a bjj ruleset. Bo Nickal certainly didn't look his part when he grapples. Maybe it's not worse or better - it's just different when different considerations are in place.
Its kind of a weird style, i wouldnt call it wrestling because in a traditional wrestling sense he stalls a lot on his feet and stands up straight and avoids shooting quite a bit. He uses Some wrestling elements but his style is 100% grappling focused i wouldnt really study him for wrestling techniques lol great defensive grappler though.
I watched Gordon Ryan get tech Falled in Less than a minute against Pat Downey. They switched to BJJ and Gordon Beat Downey. I felt like Downey did better at BJJ than Gordon was at wrestling.
@adamtownsend5880 Because the match was only supposed to be a wrestling match because gordon was talking so much sh*t that he can beat a wrestler in a wrestling match. Pat challenged him to a wrestling match. Gordon agreed only if they do a bjj match first. Pat agreed to do it, but his focus was on the wrestling match, not on bjj
