I've built many chicken coops and pens in my younger days and I have never used the type of chicken wire that you have on the floors of my coops or pens as the holes are too large for smaller chickens and it just doesn't seem that it would hold up well for a floor. I've always used that type of wire vertically on the sides and horizontally for a roof and used hardware cloth for the floor. The hardware cloth is sturdier for a floor and less likely to have a predator reach through to grab a chicken from underneath.
Everything loves to eat chickens. Definitely go extra heavy with the floor wire. Have had weasels kill for sport gaining access by climbing the plywood walls and slipping thru a narrow slot at the roofline.
Chicken wire is great for keeping chickens contained somewhere, but totally useless for keeping predators out. I use 1/4" hardware cloth. Mink and Weasels can get themselves through a 1/2" opening. A single Mink can wipe out your entire flock in a single night. They will kill and pile all of your chickens only consuming some of the blood and brain. Used to free range my chickens morning to night. Now I only let them out for an hour or 2 in the evening when I can watch them with a rifle in my hands. Once a couple of years ago a fox snatched and got away with one of our hens that was only about 3 feet away from her. The fox had no fear of her whatsoever. They never try that when I'm out in the yard.
Wow, how far away are you taking the fox to drop him off?, don't know how keen their smell or sense is, I've never tried to trap a fox before, Good luck and thanks for sharing
might want to get game cameras to record the wildlife in your yard, if predators going after easy chickens, then they also could try for the rabbits and other small animals including your dog bear...
Too bad you can’t have a rooster. They really will protect the hens. I’ve heard there are approximately 40 sounds that a rooster will make communicating warnings. Have heard and watched a rooster tell there’s danger and the hens would run to hide under a trailer or the coup if there was a hawk flying near. Sadly I gave up on trying to raise them just too much lost to the critters. Good luck.
I do occasionally see Coyote during the day here in western NY. Mostly hear them going after the deer many nights. The threat to my chickens usually comes from fox, hawks, racoons opossum, mink and weasel. My cat got in a vicious fight with them and killed them before they got to my chickens. I have had a couple of hens die after consuming snakes and choking.

Wire floors cause chickens to get bumblefoot.
Hey Exo, who are the leg irons for on your kitchen counter? Lol!

Yep - that's what I call a Fox in the coop - no doubt about it. 😉😉

Farm Girl is a FOX IN THE HEN HOUSE 🙂❤️🔥
Sounds like a job for a .410.
I've had foxes and weasels breach the security of my hen house too.... Almost impossible to make them "fail safe".
Wait don’t shoot me I’m just checking out your chickens lol
I apologize in advance, but ok Exo, you can shoot a fox. I'm waiting for someone in your household to shoot a beaver!

I wonder if you are going to handcuff the fox with those handcuffs on the table?? Or something else....

WHAT ARE YOUR EXACT AGES, NO BULL SHITTING!
The fox wasn't a winner for a chicken dinner. Where there are foxes around there are certainly coyotes around also.

I lost 34 birds in three days to coon and young fox. They were terminated without a second thought.
