      Mitchell Johnson , when my dad & his identical twin were in their late teens they acquired a bear cub to have as a pet. When dad married mom (in ‘30) he & my uncle still had the bear (& eventually donated him to a zoo when the bear started becoming too much to handle). When she was a cub they named her Fanny. Apparently, mom would get rather annoyed with dad when they had visitors to our home (long before they had me.....their fourth & final addition to the family).....& dad would say to the visitors, “Would you like to see my bear Fanny?” True story. Dad had a crazy sense of humour.......which was passed on to me genetically. I was given several pictures of dad & my uncle with Fanny......so I’m glad to have that proof of Fanny’s existence! 😁

      To elaborate on Koana's comment for anyone interested: legend has it that in the year 390 BC the city of Rome was being besieged by a tribe of Gauls, relief for the Romans was on the way however during the night the Gauls attempted to ambush the hill (one of seven) of Campidoglio in an effort to take the city before Roman reinforcements arrived, only to be thwarted by the geese that stood guard around the farms sorrounding the hill, which with great noise and fracas woke up the defending soldiers once they had noticed the approaching attackers, and that is how Rome was saved by geese.
      PS: Geese were believed to be an embodiement of the goddess Juno so they were not eaten during the siege.

    We had a male goose who did this and when I researched it I found out that they are called sentinels. He watched over everything, ducks, baby ducks, gosling, etc. Anything that came within his purview, he protected. It was crazy and people thought I was nuts when I told them about it.

    • @blakew5672
      @blakew5672 4 роки тому +174

      If you’ve had both there’s no comparison between the two. While geese are loud there’s less overall noise with them.
      Mine honks when he first sees me in the morning, anytime my neighbor goes down his driveway (it runs past my coop) and when anytime “dangerous” might be going down. It’ll also honk if I’ve missed the normal feeding time. Beyond that, quiet as a mouse.
      The roosters I’ve had.....randomly throughout the day for seemingly no reason, anytime they hear another rooster, and of course the 5-5:30 AM wake up call. If you live anywhere there’s another rooster in earshot they basically never shut-up.
      The goose is much more pleasant to have around than a rooster, and I’ve never had an aggressive rooster.

    • @4nd3rzzon
      @4nd3rzzon 4 роки тому +36

      And roosters don't even work as guards against aerial predators my mother lost 3 big roosters to golden eagles, or it might been a falcon I don't remember

      Golden eagles?! I’d imagine there’s not much short of a decently sized dog that would deter an eagle. The right rooster WILL attempt to fight aerial threats, but they mainly just keep a watchful eye and alert the hens.
      Roosters rarely survive any actual threats to the chickens. The way I see it, if there’s an attack, be it dog, raccoon, hawk/eagle and the only thing that dies is the rooster that means the rooster did his job.

    Fun fact. Using Geese as guard animals is a thing we've been doing for millennia. And Larry, as a Roman Tufted goose is part of one of the oldest, well over 2000 year old breeds that works well as guards because they were likely originally bred for that exact purpose. The Romans used them widely and considered them sacred to the Goddess Juno (Hera) who embodied the protection of Rome itself.
    Larry's ancestors are even credited with foiling a night-time attack on the Roman capital by the Gauls, they got a temple built in their honor. And this has continued well into the current age. Most recently, a force of 500 geese assisted in guarding the border between Chongzuo and Vietnam during the covid pandemic.

    • @angelwings7930

      That is truly fascinating. 👍

    • @AdamOwenBrowning
      @AdamOwenBrowning 2 роки тому

      500 geese and 500 trained dogs are guarding the small border. It's more of a thing that China can do to say they are "preventing the spread of covid". It helps them to phrase the sickness as something that foreigners bring in, instead of an illness that is running rampant at home. Illegal Vietnamese immigrants running into China, with their damn virus, of course!
      This area is also an "autonomous" minority ethnic region so non-Han people get the stick at usual - the geese are not trained at all (even according to Chinese state media lol) so they are just going to shriek at all the locals. The Roman example is way more interesting and actually meaningful.

I got them as full grown geese and they took awhile to get used to my family but were good after a while and would even follow me around the yard. The geese were good guard geese and they ran freely around the house. A funny thing about these geese, they were barn yard geese and one day my wife and kids went down the drive way to a pond to go for a swim. The geese followed us as I called to them and when we jumped into the water for a swim they would not go in the water. I do not think they ever got to swim in water before so I had to force then into the water and once in the water they loved it, swimming around with us. When it was time to go home I called them and they followed. Next time we went to the pond the geese went right into the water. I really enjoyed these animals.

We have Brown Chinese geese..the noise level is 10+, fortunately the neighbors also have & love geese so it's cool. NOTHING gets by our pair, they don't miss a thing. I'm 71 and when I was a kid - we lived in the country - my folks got a couple geese. They were already grown - and one decided he didn't like me very much, so every time I went outside, he'd head right at me, would grab my shirt in his beak, and flog me with his wings! Doggone! that hurt!! It happened several times and I got tired of having to sneak outside so I marched outside and he headed at me again, only this time I reached out and grabbed his neck with both hands and swung him around my head a few times and then let go. He flew through the air and when he hit the ground, he just laid there wondering what the heck happened. After that, when I'd go outside he'd look at me and run the other way! Ha. Survival of the fittest, 8-year-old kid style.
