I always looked at Carli as the face of the team since way back, but I see what she means about not being marketed the same as the players US Soccer wanted. I was always surprised to not see her have more sponsorships or be promoted more. How she was successful in that environment is beyond me! Absolutely original and amazing player! ❤ I was at her last USWNT and it meant so much to me after being such a huge fan of her as a player but also a person in her authenticity.

I was one of the person's that was in agreement with Carli. Everything has to start from the grassroot level. Those Spanish Women players that play for Real Madrid & Barcelona are far ahead of those current youth American players in the Senior team.
I know this, because I've been watching football from the 90's & I watch alot of European Football.
Why do you think even at age 38 for example, Cristiano Ronaldo is still fitter than several younger players? It comes down to consistent work ethic & performance on the field.

Carli, I feel your pain. But let me say this. My family has always enjoyed your contributions to the world of soccer. You called it right at the wwc. But it was caused by the coaching staff to cause the team to not be prepared. Not have that killer instinct.
I say it all the time. Mia Hamm was billed as the face of soccer. Morgan, I call Barbie, because they bill her as the face of soccer. The last few cycles it was Sophie Smith. They would not take her out.
Whoever chooses the people to put in front of the cameras for USSoccer needs to know we will go online for those other players. To get to know who we want to know.

I’ve always thought Carly Lloyd was one of the best players on the USWNT because she was but I think it’s a two way street. You have to market yourself and it’s often harder for women in sports. In todays age it’s easier but if you wanted your career to be based on what you do on the field that’s fine but not everyone is watching women’s soccer. Turning down opportunities to make you widely known outside of just the soccer audience is on you. At the end of the day marketing is based on what’s good for the business and what can make money.

She built her own brand and was disappointed that no one gave a flying hoot about it? Excellence on the field should have only counted in her mind? Didn’t they teach marketing at Rutgers? Would you put Alex Morgan or Carli Lloyd on a poster? For beauty do you choose an Afghan Hound or a Bull Dog? Bull Dogs are wonderful animals but the Afghan looks nicer.
Mia Hamm did not want to be the face of the team back in the day. Based on everything you read, she reluctantly did it for the team and really wanted to be just another of the gals playing a game she loved. I don’t think her team looked badly at her because they knew her and what she was about internally. However, Carli Lloyd didn’t trust anyone?
She thinks organizers should have put up on Posters of her in Philly in addition to Julie Ertz? I remember once that Isiah Thomas was upset because early in Michael Jordan’s career, Mike was more popular in Chicago. So what, Thomas got his recognition in Detroit while Mike toiled in the Windy City for a while. Just because you come from somewhere means people need to kowtow to you when you return.
She was surprised that the National team was full of people who wanted to exceed and take other positions? Did she think that once she made it, she didn’t need to be constantly pushed from others who wanted to play the same as her? This environment was too cut throat? Why does the USWNT 99 team still have reunions and they all seem to get along? They seem to understand the roles they had and to be successful they accepted them because they wanted to win. Would you want Carli Lloyd at a reunion? Just Asking.
In the past, players pushed for equal treatment first. Now with others equal pay, she’s disappointed she didn’t get her fair share?
I not sure what she is accomplishing by saying these things. No team is perfect but to win, you need to find a way to exist peacefully. Looks like deep down, she was an individual in a team sport. Too bad she can’t let it go and move on.

  • @Gravyman
    @Gravyman 11 місяців тому +2

She's so right. Alex Morgan was marketed like crazy! She is a great player, but her being cute and girly was what they wanted people to see. It was the right move though, because that is the core audience that they needed to keep the talent pipeline going and building interest. I think her feminine look has changed all of women's soccer in every country. Unfortunately, this agenda to build the game has neglected truly great players. Carli was the engine of her team, an absolute force and a balon d'or worthy player.

Some things there aren’t words to define but you know when you see it, if I said to someone “that Carli Lloyd she wills that to victory”they know what you mean. At one time USWNT had a handful tough and skilled, and were strides ahead of the rest of the world. The rest of the world has caught up, their teams are playing more physical and possessing speed. When Carli left, I felt the only one that had the desire, the heart, and skill was Julie Ertz, but she was battling injuries. The team advertised Morgan, the purple haired girl, and couple others, they weren’t at the same level of intensity, or skill level. When I say skill level, the great players have an innate gift where they see more of the field and where the players are without seeing them and make efficient plays and sometimes great plays. Julie was very physical but also an excellent technician, from a tv view. I thought Morgan and other mids and fwds are too easily taken off the ball. I think the USWNT, hate to say it, are becoming like the Men’s team. And that’s the facts, the men’s team really hasn’t done much when you compare them to the Women. There was a long stretch were the USWNT were the Babe Ruth’s of Women’s football and they knew they were and didn’t take prisoners. That’s gone. Sucks, i enjoyed watching them.

@4:50 when she begins talking about agents, and conforming and creating stars.... This is why US soccer doesn't really grow. This pay to play format we have leaves talented players behind. If you don't go to Bradenton academy, nobody knows who you are but there are kids out there that can play, they just can't afford expensive programs.

This interview is basically "tell me you hate Alex Morgan without telling me you hate Alex Morgan." Carli is an amazing athlete and national hero, but is not likable due to this chip on her shoulder and bitterness. This is a player who for years was not in touch with her immediate family and did not want family and friends to attend her games which she herself admitted to in her book. She would have been more marketable with a friendlier and more approachable personality. Seems like someone who isolated herself and did not come across as a supportive teammate.

I agree with the lack of development in the youth programs, it’s been like that for so long. But to say there’s not a single player with that dog mentality anymore is crazy. Crystal Dunn literally plays any position for the team? Alex Morgan who’s given everything for this team and to build the game. You can have a vendetta against certain players but don’t group them as a whole. Also Mia Hamm was put to the forefront because she was the best player on the team. It’s nothing against Michelle Akers but that team was stacked with talent. Mia literally broke the international goals record while playing…

28:55 four years is a long time in football. And I remember the buildup of the 2023 Women's World Cup. They were playing those USA vs The World Commercials and it almost felt like the US team thought they would just walk into the final. And I just thought they were in for a rude awakening. Spain and England have progressed a lot since 2019. Canada couldn't even get out of the group and US were fortunate to get out of the group but then lost in the Round of 16. The focus was not on the pitch but off it and it showed.

Carli was Captain Fantastic. Basically what has happened is that the world caught up and on the women's side they were winning so why have a true developmental academy program when you have "pay to play" clubs and ECNL and the horror that is high school soccer. They US Academy program for boys saved men's soccer pure and simple. We have not developed our females correctly and there will need to be a proper academy program for girls (I know they tried and failed but that was merely politics).

*You can criticize them for once about how they play, who should play, how many goals. But this woman constantly criticized her former team. What does that do for them? You think they want to hear that going into games? Be like Heather o’reilly who didn’t bad mouth them or Brandi chastian who went onto twitter and gave them a motivational speech or Mia Hamm who actually went to their game for support. Carli is a bitter and selfish woman who can’t help but to put her hate on this team. She was a star at one point but always had to be in the spotlight and didn’t like it when others were. Boohoo, grow tf up. At least she was very successful and has the accomplishments and trophies to prove that.*

Always thought Carli Lloyd was a great hustle merchant for the USWNT!
However, CL turns down “celebrity” opportunities, but then complains about her struggle to be recognized as such… seems like she’s a bit confused about what she wants and how to get it.
All athletes, male or female, have to embrace their “celebrity” if they want more recognition.. even the best and most recognizable athletes of all time like Cassius Clay/Ali, Michael Jordan, Deion Sanders, and Tom Brady (and many others) all embraced “celebrity.”

Carli is so genuine, unlike the Pretentious Princess, Alex Morgan. There is a reason many Americans cheered against the USWNT this past World Cup .. Morgan and Rapinoe for starters. If Carli was playing for the team, I guarantee you most Americans would have been cheering for their home team. Morgan destroyed her brand at the World Cup and her perfume commercials ended up an embarassment with how poorly she played.

Carli, you didn't like your teammates, they didn't like you. One can see the farewell ceremony for Rapinoe and Julie Ertz. At the last game for Rapinoe, they had the most attendance in the history of the stadium. This shows that it was your fault, not the team or teammates. Stop bad-mouthing them you have no credibility.
