@terrancehall9762 I kinda understand what you mean, in that, how can Landon know that someone like Julian Green or Aaron Johansson were going to flop massively before they got a chance to prove themselves on a big stage? Just keep in mind that he never said he should be the one to make those decisions, he merely pointed out that some other players that have ties or opportunities with other national teams may not care as much as someone that leads his country with over 50 goals, and the most assists in international football history. I didn't get the impression that he was saying he knew he was right the whole time. To me, it sounded like his hunch ended up coming true later, which led to him feeling vindicated for his initial response. He also specifically pointed out how Jermaine Jones was not an example of what he was trying to say and that there are multiple exceptions. People are just looking to be offended and make a mountain out of a molehill. This isn't a sports TV analyst that never played a match or represented his country, it's Landon Donovan. I'd most certainly consider him an expert in all things USMNT.
regarding the “my other team is mexico” thing, i’ve always believed that you should root for your rivals. when you aren’t playing them. or root for the team who knocks you out in a tournament. cuz you want to be going against the best. so if i’m messi, and barcelona and real madrid are on opposite sides of the champions league bracket, i root for real madrid the whole tournament so that we can meet our rivals in the finals, and beat them. if i’m costa rica in the 2014 world cup, after losing to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, i root for them in their next games. because if i’m going to be beaten, i want it to be by the ones who win it all.
main goal is winning in professional sports doesn't matter who its against just matters that you win rooting for a rival team discredits you rooting for you're main team as a life long barca fan I always love seeing Madrid lose.
Hearing them talk about their Pride playing for the USA compared to the Women's team like Rapinoe and Morgan and their disrespect.....that's why they faced that appropriate backlash....Thank you men's team legends for explaining what it's ALL about!
When did those women ever disrespect the country or the flag? Fighting for equal rights for women and criticizing the country because certain folks are not living up to the ideas this country was supposedly founded on is not being disrespectful, and saying otherwise bc they don't fit your narrative is a you problem
For context @14:00, Landon is calling out certain players that Jurgen selected who were essentially European and had hardly any connection to the United States. This was a big criticism during the time as actual Americans were being unfavored. A risk that certainly didn't pay off. (John Brooks, Aron Jóhannsson, Mix Diskerud, Jermaine Jones, Julian Green, Fabian Johnson)
Jermaine Jones started under Bob Bradley in 2011. He was a key addition to the team. Johnson and Brooks were also good enough to be part of the team. Johannson and Diskerud however...
I find it so funny that Landon is so ahead of the rest of them yet to me it feels like (especially Kate by assuming he „just likes to be different“. I found that a bit childish and bit of a disgrace towards this legend.) they are unwilling to grasp what he‘s trying to state in terms of no borders and that we are all just human beings. If you take turkish soccer (I‘m turkish) as an example. I will support teams like Israel or Azerbaijan or any other closer country if we‘re not making it bc I consider them close to myself and it sheds a good light on that area in terms of soccer and attention for it’s sports. You as well can‘t deny that Mexico is also a big part of the US and it‘s culture/economy etc. So there clearly is a link that‘s not only based on rivalery. And also on club level. I support Besiktas Istanbul but will be super happy whenever a turkish team is successfull in the Champions League. And ironically, I will support Galatasaray at the Champions League but I‘m going to hate them so hard and want them to be crushed in the league. So it is, like he said, an ambivalence between realism and idealism. We love our nationalteam, I support other nations that I consider close to myself and my identity. Tho at the same time I believe that we deep down are basically all the same human beings, which isn‘t that hard to understand. In the end it is all about swinging between those feelings and trying to find a place comfortable in that limbo.
Timmy Chandler is the only one that clearly didn't really care about playing for the US. Mix tried playing in MLS but just wasn't that good. Johannsson was always injured. Green just found his level in 2 Bundesliga.
Fabian Johnson was a wonderful player for us though, he repped the crest wonderfully. If he is talking about Fabian I really think its a bit unwarranted. If you want to say Chandler or Johannsson then fine but it seemed like Fabian cared when he did play. @@jdubb45

Everyone so adverse to Landon taking issue with mercenary dual nationals who didn't care for the team - then can't believe he would show love to another country in a world cup.
So funny. His reasoning makes total sense. Landon cares about US soccer more than anything; of course, you want to see Mexico and other CONCACAF nations do well in international competitions against anyone besides the US. I was rooting for Canada in the Copa once the US got knocked out!
I remember when donovan and the us were dominating messi and argentina in a game but nobody ever talked about it... Donovan was dribbling through argentina like if it was haiti

@@SocalMotoRx ua-cam.com/video/y1sZGrAYQMA/v-deo.html Donovan really brought it in that game. For a striker to be able to play a left-footed ball like that is crazy.
I almost got kicked out of the Columbus Guatemala qualifier in 2016 for giving Klinsmann sh!t for cutting Donovan throughout the whole first half... I think he complained about me at halftime because a USSF staff member, not security, came over to the rail and asked me to keep my comments positive or I had to go lol.
Kate Abdo really got on my nerves when she was pressing Donovan on his comment that some of the Germans that Klinsmann had recruited for the USMNT clearly didn't really care about their "American heritage". Other than Jermaine Jones, it was obvious that these other "ringers" didn't really care. So it varies from individual to individual, some people feel a connection to a country that they weren't born in but that one of their parents is from, and some don't, and you can tell by their actions, how they talk, etc. At the same time, I will say that Landon doesn't seem to have the emotional intelligence to make it very very very clear, with emphasis, exactly what he was saying. He wasn't saying that it's impossible for someone who is a dual national to serve on the national team on another country, and do so honorably and authentically. He wasn't saying that. He's saying that one or two or three specific individuals who Klinsmann recruited gave him (Donovan) the impression that they didn't really care about the USMNT or America and they didn't care to try and integrate themselves into the team and really try and be "American". This should not offend anyone.
Landon’s opinion on attitudes and agendas of certain specific dual nats may get criticism, but he is consistent. He doesn’t want a player to come in and only be about themself. Like when David Beckham joined the Galaxy, he went off on loan to AC Milan just months after arriving. LD called him out publicly for only being about himself and not being loyal to the Galaxy. That said, the USMNT really really needed LD in 2014.
I gdt Landons point and think they kind of twisted it a bit on him. He isn't saying oh they weren't born here so they don't care. He is just saying that those specific guys didn't have an attachment to that team or maybe didn't identify directly with that team or the US. He isn't generalizing humans as a whole who migrate to the US or their first nation isn't the US. Just referring to those specific guys not being as attached or caring about that team in the same way.
2002 and 2010 is where he really shined. As of today, Landon Donovan holds 2 world cup records. 1) The only CONCACAF player to win 'the best young player' award AND the most goals scored at the world cup by a CONCACAF player. Impressive resume.
It’s crazy to act like what Landon said about some of those folks was at all controversial. It’s not about being a dual national or an immigrant or anything. It’s about some folks being committed to the national team and caring and others just doing it wholly for themselves. It’s not that complicated. When folks say “how can you tell???” they’re being disingenuous. It was obvious for some
Agreed! 100%! To have to explain such a simple comment (and it is simple), is silly. Kate was trying to make something out of it, but it’s nothing. Some people naturalize, and it means more to them than other people who’ve naturalized.
@@clintdempseyisgoat8829 I still think Johannsson was even injured during that world cup. He didn't play for like the last month at AZ going into the World Cup. Then had surgery right after. Didn't seem fit.

I've seen the two parts of this interview & you can kind of tell why LD was left out of the team in 2014. He never was the guy to reach to other players in camp. I'm actually stunt that he never made a relationship with Clint Dempsey. They were arguably the two best players for that era! I enjoyed LD in the 2002 WC, but with time Clint represented the real US essence of the team. With LD it always felt like he left so much to desire with his career & I feel like he does feel the same way. Nonetheless, he did deserve a spot in 2014 regardless if he was fit or not.
Comparing club teams and National teams is ridiculous. I agree with Landon. I always root for all the concacaf teams when it's against other regions. I love to see the success. It benefits the region. The whole Messi holding a Real kit is such a weak comparison and have nothing to do with eachother.
When USA failed to qualify for the world cup for 40 years straight no concacaf country cheered for USA failing and wanting them to succeed for the betterment.
What Landon and the group were debating about, the same type of conversation is happening with the Philippine Women’s team. I feel the Fil-Ams do feel proud of their Filipino heritage to represent, but there are sectors back home that question if they’re really Filipino enough
sooo many americans do this because making the uswnt is super competitive (ali riley plays for NZ, kyra carusa plays for ireland, etc.) they're only eligible through their parents and have spent like 0 time in those countries
Phillippines is on a different level of having foreign players in their squad than the US mens team. It is not even close. Canada mens national team is a better argument.
I know exactly what Landon was trying to say but unfortunately with the media and cancel culture going around he was probably cautious about saying it. We all know it’s true.
Landon is a better player. I appreciate him being a grown up and talking how he feels. Makes Landon even a better person. The Charlie, Dempsey Edu feels like bullying. But weak inside

@nerychristian maybe so. I remember watching him at Everton and he done well just wasn't for long enough. Seemed like he was a home boy ,just wanted to be at home and not in Europe fighting for a place .
also its not talked about but he had arguably world class vision and soccer IQ. his long passing was off the charts. he wasn't the best dribbler, but that's ok. but his vision and soccer iq....check out his assist highlight reel. not just his set piece delivery, but passes IN a game. early on he had a no-look one touch assist with the outside of his foot in the assist video. Against china I believe. It was mind blowing.
Mercenaries are never going to give as much as true believers. That's indisputable. Landon was a true believer and he was left off the team for mercenaries.
Julian Green has actually spoken about being disappointed on not being called up anymore and hopes for a return to the NT. They were all talking about Timmy Chandler specifically
I would disagree regarding choosing club though. There are some people, they don't "choose" their club. They grew up supporters of a club and that's it.
Kate nailed it right on that archaic American discourse of 'not feeling/being American enough'. Americans always are: 'half Italian 3/4's German, 1/64 African, etc...' but when someone else, outside of the country, truly is a double or triple national, then they are not 'American enough'. I have a total respect and admiration for Landon Donovan, and recognize the huge impact he's had on football's development in the US, but he won't sit at the same table as Clint, Maurice, Bocanegra, Tim Ream. Yes, Klinsman favoured 'German-Americans', but Landon's comments are simply out of touch.
But he also seems to be right about how much certain players actually cared in the end. His logic to get to his conclusion may be rooted in bigotry but his conclusion was still correct.
except it wasn't about being "American" enough. I think this is one thing that Alexi explained better. "When you put on that jersey, when you put on that crest, it MEANS something to you. When you hold your hand over your heart when that national anthem plays, it MEANS something to you. I agree that we are a country of many origins and immigrants, that actually is fine, because many of them would absolutely represent this nation with all of their heart.
I think LD just didn’t express it well on the spot, but he really meant that having passion for the crest (club or national), is going to take the team further than someone there for a paycheck. Nothing to do with “American-ness”
I wonder if Jürgen maybe subconsciously was undermining the USMNT. Just not having that innate feeling toward the team and Landon. Maybe big consideration for next coach

At the end of the day, like Kate says, everyone is there for themselves. Sure there are players who bleed red, white and blue but both can be true at the same time. I think LD thought that statement was edgy and individualistic but now it feels like he's just being stubborn about admitting he was wrong. No harm in admitting to a mistake! Overall a great two-part interview. Cheers to Kate and the boys!
He is my fav player ever but I think he has some terrible takes and he is kinda bad at explaining himself. I don’t think dual nationals are bad. As he mentions Jones bleeds red white and blue while also staying true to his country of birth. I see the same from Sergino Dest and Musah and others. The difference is Gregg has built that culture where Klinsmann didn’t. Klinsmann brought in mercenaries who didn’t fit the culture. It’s no mistake that Jones who took to the culture the most was actually brought in by Bob Bradley. Berhalter now has put team culture first above individual players. It’s why we can have so many dual nats but keep a tight cohesive connection to the team.

@@Manga_Lloyd tbh he needs to concentrate on himself.

Please have Jermaine Jones if you can, it would be a very interesting interview.
100%
I love this!! Loved the USMNT when these guys were playing. This is such an insightful show.
Landon is amazing, I so resonated with what he said about borders etc. beautiful thought
I was so disappointed Landon wasn't on the 2014. The legend deserved a roster spot on bench at minimum.
regarding the “my other team is mexico” thing, i’ve always believed that you should root for your rivals. when you aren’t playing them. or root for the team who knocks you out in a tournament. cuz you want to be going against the best. so if i’m messi, and barcelona and real madrid are on opposite sides of the champions league bracket, i root for real madrid the whole tournament so that we can meet our rivals in the finals, and beat them. if i’m costa rica in the 2014 world cup, after losing to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, i root for them in their next games. because if i’m going to be beaten, i want it to be by the ones who win it all.
main goal is winning in professional sports doesn't matter who its against just matters that you win rooting for a rival team discredits you rooting for you're main team as a life long barca fan I always love seeing Madrid lose.
This is on another level.
Best of the best football show.
Donovan OG but my favorite USA history football player this is Demspey 💪
I agree with Landon. I really hope that some of our dual-nats now are embracing this American opportunity.
You can absolutely tell when players care less. It's even obvious to fans.
Like what? I can’t pinpoint anything
(John Brooks, Aron Jóhannsson, Mix Diskerud, Jermaine Jones, Julian Green, Fabian Johnson)
and he was spot on...
Jermaine Jones started under Bob Bradley in 2011. He was a key addition to the team.
Johnson and Brooks were also good enough to be part of the team. Johannson and Diskerud however...
Brooks still wants to play for us
At 18:06 Donovan states that Jones was not one of the guys he was referring to 🤔
He quickly said Jermaine wasnt like that- also, he played in the MLS- which obviously goes a long way with Landon
In the end it is all about swinging between those feelings and trying to find a place comfortable in that limbo.
the no borders is kinda dumb though. because its the different cultures that allow us to appreciate our differences.
As supporters, we saw the same thing. There were players that Jurgen brought in that didn't have the same heart as players who were raised in the US.
@@jdubb45

Clint's a funny dude. Good interview guys.
Quickly becoming my favorite sports show ever.
If only Landon had pushed himself in the face of discomfort and really staked his claim as best in the US and as a world elite.
I think he made his claim for best US player but you make a good case about being world elite.
I think Donovan was a world class player. As a Galaxy fan it was amazing to have him but it would have also been amazing to see him show his extreme talent more on the world stage.
@@SocalMotoRxLandon Donovan being world class is a joke. He played like a total of 30 games at the top level. He's at best a good professional player. Clint Dempsey has more experience. He has a stronger claim than Donovan of being the better player. Only his reputation takes him out of the conversation to American's

Donovan really brought it in that game. For a striker to be able to play a left-footed ball like that is crazy.
Awesome interview. Loved the casual back and forth.
Donovan is the greatest U.S. player of all time. Only respect!
Donovan is still captain America. I love the fact Pulisic is following on his foot steps. Getting a taste of Mexican vs USA rivalry
I was waiting for this!!!! ❤❤❤
Best episode of Kickin' It so far! Keep it going, please! Clint "Hey Bro...I wanna go to Mcdonalds...wuzz up?" I'm dying 🤣

Clint is such a Texas boy! You love to see it.
I love this show!!! A+
Dang....that car accident Charlie.....I knew Ashley Roberta the girl that passed away in the car =( sad day for sure, but good to see you thriving!
Different cycle but I still remember David Regis.
Would have been interesting to hear thoughts on the 06 World Cup, he was at his worst then and it showed on the field
I hope all of you can know what it's like, to be a part of a team. I love this show.
Timmy chandler, Julian green, Aaron johhanson, Terrence Boyd.

Landon is the GOAT, I wish he’d be the coach for usmnt
I wish we could have gotten to know Landon sooner. I hope he knows how the country feels about him.
LD is one sweet guy coming from a Mexican guy here I remember the first time I met him I told him to autograph me my FIFA game and put the Mexican assassin and he was no way dude I wouldn't do that and I told him don't worry it's only for me I'll save it and he actually did it from there he became a good friend of mines saw him so many times in Galaxy and US practices
Biopic actor for Landon is Alden Ehrenreich
Dempsey hit the post against T&T. That 58th goal would have been huge.
15:06 LD was born in Ontario the town, not the province.
I know exactly what Landon was trying to say but unfortunately with the media and cancel culture going around he was probably cautious about saying it. We all know it’s true.
Next guest, Michael Bradley please....
Landon is a better player. I appreciate him being a grown up and talking how he feels. Makes Landon even a better person. The Charlie, Dempsey Edu feels like bullying. But weak inside
I'll turn a corner. Love these guys. Edu, rock, Charlie v Brazil, Dempsey v England and Donovan at San Jose Clash ripping up MLS as first star. US football! Passion.
Landon is a PL icon. Deadly 4 everton and always a clinical dangerous finisher
He done well at Everton but he played 17 games scoring twice. Hardly a Premier league icon. Might be loved by Everton fans that doesn't make you a PL icon
@@TORRES999ify If only Donovan would have stayed in Europe instead of coming to MLS. He could have accomplished a lot more.
@nerychristian maybe so. I remember watching him at Everton and he done well just wasn't for long enough. Seemed like he was a home boy ,just wanted to be at home and not in Europe fighting for a place .
After this, we gotta see Jermaine Jones on here.
Donovan had consistent nearly perfect service on set pieces. That's why he has the record for assists. Nobody talks about that for some reason.
also its not talked about but he had arguably world class vision and soccer IQ. his long passing was off the charts. he wasn't the best dribbler, but that's ok. but his vision and soccer iq....check out his assist highlight reel. not just his set piece delivery, but passes IN a game. early on he had a no-look one touch assist with the outside of his foot in the assist video. Against china I believe. It was mind blowing.
I believe Fabian Johnson and Julian Green cared.
Mercenaries are never going to give as much as true believers.
That's indisputable.
Landon was a true believer and he was left off the team for mercenaries.

14:18 Julian Green!😂
Julian Green has actually spoken about being disappointed on not being called up anymore and hopes for a return to the NT. They were all talking about Timmy Chandler specifically
What a great sports show. So much better than a bunch of pundits yelling at each other.
I would disagree regarding choosing club though. There are some people, they don't "choose" their club. They grew up supporters of a club and that's it.
Kate is extraordinary
@@Rezzzzz1234 absolutely! at the end of the day, he was proved right.
except it wasn't about being "American" enough.
Landon‘s logical reasoning skills leave a lot to be desired - good on the crew for calling him out on it
You can tell he’s smart but his opinions can be a bit hypocritical. He hasn’t fully thought through them

The absolute dumbest thing the US National team has ever done was not bringing Landon to the 2014 World Cup. Klinsman, who I liked before then, turned into the biggest selfish a-hole I have ever seen in soccer.

I totally agree with Landon on him caring more about the national team than others. BUT his take on the players who weren't born in or grow up in the states bores me.
