Split, Croatia
Split is the second largest city in Croatia, with just over 200,000 inhabitants, and is the largest city on the Adriatic coast. Once merely considered by some as just transit point - with excellent transport connections by bus, sea, air and train, it’s easy to travel to and from the city - it is deservedly becoming a destination in its own right.
There are some fantastic sights in the city, both Roman and more modern, excellent options for dining, drinking and nightlife, plenty of beach opportunities and lots of choice for those wanting day trips.

Diocletian’s Palace: goo.gl/E7HTo7
Considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, Diocletian’s palace is certainly the main attraction of the city of Split, Croatia. These ruins are some of the most valuable surviving buildings of the Roman era on the Adriatic coast.Emperor Diocletian, who voluntarily gave up the throne of the Roman Empire, in the turn of the 4th century CE built the palace and after his retirement on May1, 305 settled here, on the beach, in the Illyrian province of Rome.
Today the Illyrian province is part of Croatia. The so-called palace was a massive structure and contains not only the palace itself but also buildings, intended for housing military garrison. The whole complex occupied around 30,000 square meters. Today these ruins lie in the heart of the city of Split in Croatia.
The Riva: goo.gl/feAxj3
The Riva started to look the way it does today two centuries ago, when the French, in time of Napoleon ruled these parts through Marshal Marmont. Today this promenade is the cities living room, the most popular and most important public place in Split. In the meantime it has been widened and reconstructed several times, but it was always blessed with the most spectacular set, the south facade of the Diocletian Palace, with the entrance into the Substructures, and later on with the buildings that were built west of the Palace, also the Franciscan monastery with the church of St. Francis, and the Bajamonti Dešković Palace and last but not least the Port Authorities building on the east end.
Riva today is a pedestrian heaven, thrusting with Cafés and restaurants, an ideal place for having your morning or afternoon coffee, or for an evening out with friends over drinks. Riva is the stage of the city life of Split, a venue for numerous cultural and entertainment events, boisterous Split carnival, as well as the stage for meeting Split sportsmen after countless successes, such as Goran Ivanišević, Hajduk football club players and Jugoplastika basketball players, Olimpic medal winners... Riva is also a political forum, with decades of political opportunities being depicted through mass rallies. Naturally, Riva is always at its best in time of Sudamja, a celebration dedicated to St. Domnius, the patron saint of Split.
Marjan Hill: goo.gl/W2N2G9
Every time you want to take a break from the hectic lifestyle of the city is enough to take a little walk and head towards Marjan. Marjan is an integral part of the city center that extends from the Marmont Street and continues to the west. It’s long over 3 km. In 1964 it was declared a park and since then is considered a protected part of Split. This hills and its forests are the lungs of the city, the most popular place to escape from the city bustling and chaotic pace of life during the high season in July and August.

The ruins at 5:44 are dating back to 305 AD,1700 years old, just like the palace. The cathedral is actually Diocletians mausoleum aka his grave. It also dates back to 305 AD and that makes it the oldest cathedral in the world. The bell tower was built around 1250.
the statue of the sphinx in the square in Diocletian's palace is original from Egypt
That's a pretty cool fact. I wish we would have known that before filming. Split is so great! - Trevor
St. Duje (church near spinx) is the oldest cathedral in the world. And the walls are oldest walls in Europe; 1700y old..
omg the singing was amazing!
lifeofaking they were so amazing right? What a great thing to stumble across - T
Yes! That is why it is so much better to explore on your own.
Actually, that is klapa singing and I recognized them, it is Klapa Šufit:
ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=klapa+%C5%A1ufit
Thank you. It's called KLAPA,traditional way of singing specific for southern part of Croatia. Singing a'capella, with one leading vocal, usualy tenor, and other vocals (bas, bartione) compliting the sound. They sing about the our Adriatic sea, olive trees, love, love for the country and family ect...
True heart of Dalmatia, true Mediterranean lifestyle 🌴😎. Best regards from sunny Split riviera!
You guys are just too cute! Love your videos. My girlfriend and I are going to Croatia this summer. I was already looking forward to it but after seeing a your videos, I can't wait to get there!
You're going to love it! It was honestly one of our favourite trips to date. We can't wait to go back! - Trevor
woah thanks for the video, really helpful as I'm going to Split tomorrow :)
You are?! Wow have so much fun. Croatia is one of our favs. Split is a lot of fun - Trevor
How ever did I miss this series? Maybe I stopped at Zagreb while researching! Loving the series, the red ale looked amazing along with the food and amazing scenery! Great video guys! ~Cara
Ughh must spend a month in Croatia (go away pandemic!)
Wonderful video! I just discovered your channel and have been binge watching your adventures all day from Nashville, Tennessee, USA! You two are SO fortunate to be able to see so much of the world. What I would give to see just one of the places you’ve seen.. Italy, Greece, UK, Croatia. Ahhhh, I’m living vicariously through you right now haha Curious as to when and where will your trip come to an end, and what will you do for videos once they do? I hope you don’t stop making videos, I love watching you both! I believe you mentioned you’re from Canada. I would love to see these types of videos done there! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us! Safe travels!
Hey Whitley! Welcome to the channel. You must have watched a lot of our vlogs then.. we have a lot. :D
RE: our trip ending. Never?! hehe.. We kind of do it in pockets throughout the year. A few months out at once then 1 month home in Canada. So we always have lots of content this way. We do want to do some more Canada videos but we're often not in the country. - Trevor
In love with your videos!
Ah thanks so much Lauren. It was great chatting with you on Insta Live today! Keep watching.. so much more on the way. - Anna
You should try Zlatni Medvjed ( Golden Bear). Excellent craft beer.
Thank you for the heads up in regards the maze like nature of the old palace area. I will build in extra time to find places when I'm there. Learned that in Seville... Build in time if your are on a tight schedule. Login the outtakes as wepl
You're welcome. It's such a maze so be prepared to get lost in a good way. :) - Trevor
Really nice video guys! As a Split local, i always feel proud when people have great time here and leave positive feedback.
5:25 - the ruins you see are actually the eastern walls of original Palace and the arch are the ruins of an eastern gates.
9:00 - Anna is walking under the gates of the western walls of the original Palace. The whole city grew up from inside the Palace ;)
If you ever come back here, feel free to contact me, i am a licensed guide specialized for behind the scenes local experience tours.
Happy traveling! Best regards from Split
Kazo we're so glad you like the video. We had an absolute amazing time in Split and all of Croatia for that matter. Thanks for pointing out the gates and facts. We'll be back for sure, we're already talking about spending a month or so in Split and using it as a hub to get around to the islands and a little northeast. - Trevor
That's great to hear. The whole essence of "local Split" is moved little bit outward from the center, especially in the summer season. If you are willing to experience some of that ( hidden zen gardens, authentic local cuisine, beaches...) , or to vlog about it, just email me next time you are here.
Kažo Cukar my partner and I are planning to visit Croatia in late August. I am really interested in seeing more of the local side of Croatia. Any areas in Split you would recommend?
Awesome video!
Thanks for watching 😀- Anna
At 6:56 is my dad's building straight ahead. I never see it on anyone;s vlogs, so Im happy to see it on yours. :)
That's too funny. Glad we got it in the shot for you 😃 haha - Trevor
Well...first of all-thank you for coming to Split :) An article about your blog came out in croatian newspapers today. I was born and raised in Split and work with turists (restaurant in the center of the city) and there are some things I don't understand. 1st-what do you mean THEY CALL it palace? It is a palace and you can see it in brochures on every step in the city. Why didnt you take one? Then you could've taken nice shoots of the palace walls and see the golden doors, the huge statue above it,our cute little park. And see that the palace it more then 1700 years old. It seems to me like tourists are traveling just so that they can say "Oh,we've been there" and thats it. Like you dont explore where you are actualy going and dont care about it. Leopold,or what was the name of that bar,is not where the locals go. And you have our local beer in almost every restaurant and bar. Why didnt you ask locals for informations? Or maybe a touristic biro? Our culture is Very rich. Thats logical, since we are Much older then any country on the west. People are very interesting and specific... We have so many ultra talented people. Did you know Nikola Tesla is Croatian?Did you hear of 2cellos? We have so many world know sportsman...I don't get this way of traveling... I dont want to be rude. Thats not the intention. I just dont get it.
Oh and yes,you didn't pronounce anything right :) All you had to do is stop someone local and ask. We are realy willing to help and 99% of croatians speak english
Hey Maja...what newspaper did you see us in? Do you happen to have a link so we can see it on a website? No one has tagged us.
Remember this is just a short video of our day. We did a lot more than what you see in the video here. We're certainly not travelling around to say that 'we've been there'. That's not what we do and you can see that if you watch our videos in other countries as well. It's actually quite fun to 'get a little lost' in a beautiful city.
We drank your local beer (Karlovačko & Ožujsko) at many restaurants. If this isn't what your referring to then the restaurants were giving us the wrong beer / recommendation. We always ask what the local beer is.
Ha.. oh I know we didn't pronounce a single word right. But we had to try. ;) - Trevor (thanks for watching)
here's the link.. 100posto.hr/news/kanadski-par-obisao-jadran-i-snimio-nekoliko-videa-koje-su-vidjele-tisuce-ljudi-samo-im-nije-jasno-cemu-sluzi-dioklecijanova-palaca?.hr&
Thanks for the link Peter. Is that a large 'newspaper' over there? We're trying to translate it via Google which sort of works. I think they are saying we liked it? I hope they mean that anyway because we did! - T
in fact, you were all over the online newspapers yesterday! www.index.hr/black/clanak/video-kanadjani-se-izgubili-u-dioklecijanovoj-palaci-zasto-je-ovo-palaca/1022415.aspx, slobodnadalmacija.hr/scena/mozaik/clanak/id/528684/putnici-iz-kanade-izgubili-se-u-dioklecijanovoj-palaci-a-imali-su-jos-toga-za-reci-o-splitu-evo-nas-na-ogromnoj-planini-koja-se-zove-marjan. and no worries, those were all very positive articles ;)
Looks like a great place to get lost :-). The craft beers look good, if you ever spot any ciders on the beer menu it would be useful to know. Andy
We'll keep a look at for Cider. Anna is into it.. me .. not so much. Thanks for watching Andy! - Trevor
you can get ciders if you find a big or specialized store, we have a couple kinds
We do have ciders, but not croatian:/ Mostly it's somersby
Good to know, thanks.
Great, thanks.
nice video!!
Thanks Lily! Glad you enjoyed it. - Trevor
Only parts of the palace stands. Houses where built in meadevel time within what was the palace.
The food there looks delicious. Also the place looks beautiful.
Ah it was so delicious Felicia. Split is indeed beautiful. We want to go back already. Thanks for watching btw! You're a new commenter I believe. :) - Trevor
If u ever again come in Croatia come our small beautiful town Zadar u can see loot of old structure and nice beach close islands cald Dugi otok (loong island). uUcan go to Plitvice and some other small nice place ty for nice presentation.
A few people have mentioned Zadar. We'll put it on the list for sure. Croatia has sooooo much to offer! - T
Hi from Ireland. I'm loving your videos.
I've booked for my son and his friends to fly into Split for his 21st birthday and then back out from Dubrovnik. They're only there for 8 nights. I have a few questions if that's ok?
1. What time of year did you visit Split, the surrounding islands, Dubrovnik and Kotor? They arrive Tue 19th June 2018. I'm wondering about the weather and if everything's open by then?
2. Which of the islands should they visit?
3. Would they miss out if they only did day trips to the islands? Should they stay over? If yes, which island(s) would you choose?
4. How long should they stay in Split for? Same goes for the islands, Dubrovnik and Kotor?
Thank you
Adele
Hey! What an amazing comment. These are our favourite! :) Thanks for watching as well. Answers...
1. June 2017. All was open from what we could tell.
2. We adored Brac and Vis. But we're much much older than your son. He'll likely be into Hvar and its party scene I think.
3. If they base themselves in Hvar they won't miss out. If they don't care about nightlife, leave for another island.
4. Split is really fun and the hub. They'll be there by default many times. Dubrovnik is kind of far. It'll take a good part of the day to get there from Split. Kotor is even further. But so worth it.
Hope this helps!
- Trevor
Thank you so much for your speedy reply, it's really appreciated.
Initially, they were going to do 4-5 nights in Split and visit the islands from there and then travel down to Dubrovnik for 3-4 nights and visit Kotor from there. Do you think that's a good idea or should they do a couple of nights in Split then set off to the islands for a night or two? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to book their accommodation in the right places. :)
hi I am thinking of going to Spain versus prague and dubrovnik. which has has a beautiful attraction. i need your suggestion pls. thanks
Can't go wrong with either country!
Why would you go to the Mediterranean to find a good beer??
It's wine country...
dIRECT0R we had the wine and it’s great! Why wouldn’t you try the beer too? We like both. - T
But you know Europe is divided into the Beer/Wine/Vodka zones... time spent searching for a special local "craft beer" down in Dalmatia is a good way to over-pay for imported swill. Folks barely know what it is ("craft beer", that is)... Time's far better spent looking for a good local wine... _Plavac Mali_ is an experience all its own :).
P.s. ...or indeed, since Croats are Slavs after all ;) - you can find some superb _hard liquor._ The region is famed for their fruit brandies.. plum brandy is a staple across the Balkans, but the area there is especially famous for its walnut liqueur and maraschino.
The one thing you _won't_ find down there... is particularly good local beer :)). In fact, this is the first time I've even heard of a local Split beer. Not sure what it is you drank, but I'd put good money on it not having been brewed in Split... that said, if you enjoyed it... :)
Split isn't on the Mediterranean, it's on the Adriatic.
@@markcaudle3731 Have a look at any world atlas, the Adriatic flows into the Med!
what month did you visit Croatia?
Early June ✌️- Trevor
The “dome” is called Vestibul. The hole is intentional. The empty spaces in the wall used to have statues of Roman gods back in the ancient time.
It was kind of a holy place
What time of year it was?
It was June.
now it is a city but in the old times it was on a lock down, a fortress /palace thingy
If u come in our small beautiful town Zadar I'd love to see you guys
For sure. We luv meeting up with our viewers :) - Anna
u can find me on twitwe ivan petrovic if u want ;)
It doesn’t feel like a palace because it’s 1700 years old and not everything is in original condition. If you take a walk by the south side of the palace (looking at the sea) you’ll understand why it’s a palace.
I live in Split
Park Šuma Marjan (Wood Park Marjan) :)
Hi, Just fyi. The music in most of yr vids are way too loud vis a vis your audio. As a result, gotta keep changing the volume when watching. Pl be more consistent in yr volume. Good job, always and thanks
Hi Pauline.. what are you watching on? TV / with Speakers? That tends to happens sometimes like it does with movies. However, these older videos definitely have some audio issues unlike the new ones 👍
@@DelightfulTravellers hi..on laptop. I hv to decrease volume when yr music is on n increase vol when u r speaking.
Why don't you take a tourist guide to show you the city?
Marjan (Croatian pronunciation: [mârjan])
It’s a hill not a mountain
It’s not an ocean it’s a sea
You should realy buy turist tour to understand what you are loking at
If you watch any of our videos you'll quickly realize that's not what we do. We like to explore on our own. Thanks for watching Likota! - Trevor
I appreciate the views of Split and Diocletian's Palace, but please learn a bit of history before spreading false information on UA-cam. Diocletian built the palace from 295-305 AD, not the 400s as you said in the video.
sorry but I ate mexican food and I didnt like it, is food for porks
Sorry guys, but you should take a local guide next time. It is obvieus that you do not undetstand anything about Split, Palace and roman history. Greets from Split by a local guide
Most guides (in our experience) don't want to be on camera. So that gets really awkward fast. If you watch our videos you'll realize that's not how we like to travel either. We like to explore on our own. Remember, this is just a 10 minute video, there are lots of things we experienced off camera. - Trevor
