Our visit Split travel guide covers some of the top attractions including a food guide to local Croatian food, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day and by night including visiting palace, mausoleums, cathedrals, ruins and more. We cover activities you won't find in a typical Split tourism brochure, Split itinerary or Split, Croatia city tour also known as Grad Split Hrvatska.
15 Things to do in Split, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript: (Grad Split Hrvatska):
It is no secret that Croatia is one of our favourite countries to travel in Europe, and Split is a destination that can’t be missed.
Set in and around the walls of an ancient Roman palace looking out to the Adriatic Sea, Split is what travel dreams are made of: sunny, scenic, and filled with historic sights and culinary delights.
The streets are marble maze where pieces of history lay hidden around every corner, the harbour is lined with cafes and palm trees drawing out locals and visitors to promenade in the sunshine, and let’s not forget about the abundance of restaurants serving up fresh seafood and Croatian dishes with a contemporary twist!
Join us in this travel guide as we take you on a tour of the city and show you 15 things to do in Split, Croatia!
Diocletian was a Roman Emperor who ruled from the years 284 to 305. He was born in Dalmatia, and when it came time to build his retirement residence, he chose this very spot which today forms the Old Town of Split.
It made sense to start our tour of Split here. First, the bell tower for a quick look at the city from above. Next to the bell tower, you have the Mausoleum of Diocletian. Emperor Diocletian was a persecutor of Christians, and ironically, his mausoleum is now a cathedral named after Saint Domnius, who was martyred by Diocletian.
We walked over to the Temple of Jupiter. Interesting fact: the sphinx you see at the entrance was one of the twelve sphinxes brought from Egypt by Emperor Diocletian.
The crypt sits directly underneath the cathedral and it’s dedicated to Saint Lucy, another victim of the religious persecutions under the rule of Diocletian.
We walked through the underground market which is open to the public free of charge. This market is also located at basement level and it is filled with vendors selling all types of artwork and souvenirs. We also walked up the Marjan Steps for scenic views of Split.
Marjan Hill is 178 meters high and it takes 314 steps to reach the highest point. It’s a very pleasant walk with lots of greenery, and along the way we even came across an old stone church.
Then on the way back down the hill, we went for a walk through Varoš.
And while we were in Split, we also made time to visit a statue with a rather famous toe. This is Grgur Ninski. He was a medieval Croatian bishop who introduced the national language in the religious services.
Now a travel tip: while you’re out strolling down the Rive Promenade, you can also access Matejuška Port, which is a small harbour for small boats used mainly by the local fishermen. This particular spot offers some really nice views looking back on Split.
That’s a wrap for our travel guide to Split! If you have ideas of things to do in Split please share those in the comments below.

A free parking place is hard to find. There are free parking streets and paiting streets.
Is it English friendly? I’m going alone and only speak that lol

Yes all people know English, maybe the oldest not
I am in love with Split 😍

Thank you very much! It is just an incredible city to explore on foot. We could walk around all day long.
agreed! All the historic things that they did in the beginning of the video were really cool. Loved the food they ate too!
Hi Sam and Audrey. Thanks for your great review of split. One more thing I would recommend as a must do in split is the 30 minute cruise by ferry around the harbour to get a different perspective on things. The evening cruise at sunset is especially romantic!
Thanks for the tip! That sounds like a great way to enjoy the city views.
Just back from Split. Love it.
That is so cool to hear. How long did you stay?
Love this! How was it? I think we'll be going in June and this video makes us so excited! It looks beautiful with so many historic things to do

I feel like I'm reliving my vacation again. Next time I go back I wanna visit the surrounding islands, Blue lagoon is one of them
Thank you! Ah, hope you can again soon. It would be so fun to island hop.
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing
Thank you very much Lucian!
Did a biking vacation in Coatia last year...LOVED the area, biked on HVAR and BRAC, islands right by Split, then we stayed in Split for a day or two...but then we hired a private driver to take us to Plitvice National Park which is about 2.5 hours away...it was wonderful!!! Don't know if you made it there...
Thanks! Sounds like you had a great trip. Unfortunately we didn't get to Plitvice National Park. Definitely something we'll do if we revisit Croatia again.
You have great videos. Thank you!
Thanks Lina!
Split is a truly charming city, I'm glad that you decided to return there!
We're glad we came back too as we only passed through the first time!
We went last year May and loved it sooo much we just booked our trip in July. Can't get enough of these video's and our holiday photo's from last year.
That is awesome to hear C B!
Is it cold in may???
@@johnpathadan We had 35+ degrees most days but that was because of a freak heatwave. Even the Croats we talked to said it wasn't really normal to be that hot in May so I am not really sure how it is normally in May.
Those Romans went everywhere .... Love it!
Romans were smart inventors.
Well..Split is actually very close to the Rome, it is only 370 km in air distance believe it or not.
Sooo happy you enjoyed our city! Loved the video, come back again ❤
Thank you very much! We had a great time visiting.
@Magdalena, Can you recommend some local restaurants?
Thanks for sharing video just got back from spilt Croatia love it 😊
So great to hear Suzanna!
THank you! Glad to hear you had such a good time.
Great city!! I like it. Nice video,
Thanks Marcela! It is a fantastic place to walk around.
Croatia is an awesome country... I just camed from Rabac and filmed alot of the beaches there. Great video by the way.
Thank yoU! That is cool to hear.
Just drove into split from Hungary. Will be here 2 days and back to Hungary for 2 more weeks.
So cool to hear! Have a good trip!
I wish I can go back in time and visit the Roman Empire! Had to be spectacular!
Oh, I know what you mean! Even for just a day.
Looks great. I can't wait to go to Rovinj In Croatia in the next couple of weeks.
That is cool to hear! We loved Rovinj :)
Yes it does look really nice
As someone who finished a seminar for becoming a tourist guide in Split and some other places, I am very happy that you researched the stuff :D
Diocletian saw himself as the son of God Jupiter.
Without him I guess Split would not be half as attractive.
Thank you! We sure enjoyed Splitr.
He wasn't a saint like those people he martyred were, but he was the freaking son of Jupiter!! That's waay cooler! No wonder Split is more famous for him than for the early Christians, eh? :)
Kidding aside, he was one smart dude...I mean an effective Roman emperor who actually went into retirement?! Of his own volition. Chillin' on the Dalmatian coast. 😎
Was there ever any other case like that? Wasn't it the case that most Roman Emperors either died in military campaigns, were killed by competitors to the throne or died under, shall we say, suspicious circumstances? Oh yeah, or went mad af.
He was one of 6 I think who died a natural death. He retired in the year 305 AD and people wanted him even back but he didn't want to rule again. They say he got sick but I think that the horrible news about his wife and daughter had an effect on his death as well.
He was a good ruler in terms of administration ... He is a fascinating personality. And this city is def richer because of him.
LOVED THIS VIDEO!
Thank you very much Jovita!
Great video
Thank you!
I love your food videos 😃
Thank you very much!
Yes! That shrimp looked so amazing! Love seafood and split looks like it has a ton of great seafood
Looks like you had a beautiful blue sky day. Perfect for sightseeing.
Thank you! We sure lucked out with the weather. Actually it rained hard for a couple of days but when the sun came out we were out all day long.
Be careful eh! just kidding, I just love your clips.....keep up the good work
AH, thank you!
Conozco esta ciudad, estuve mas de 1 mes y es encantador. No hay mucho que elejir en gastronomia Como en Peru o Francia. Las playas son lindas, Como su historia.
I remember a bar / small stall on the Riva promenade that served freshly squeezed juices and cocktails, their mohito was really good :D I would love to come back to Croatia next year after things clear out in the world.
very cool to hear
When eating shrimps You shouldn't eat the whole thing only middle part(muscle) but if you extremely hungry ...why not :)
Oh, thanks for the tip! We were hungry...lol
😂😂
You are already lucky. You got each other. :)
Thank yoU! That is true!
I am in Split right now and it is incredible. Just watching in case I am missing sth lol.
Very cool to hear!
You surely missing sth dont worry :) If you are still here and need some info feel free to ask, I am local...Enjoy your stay!
Love the video guys! Just makes me even more determined to go back and visit again! 😉
Thank you! That is great to hear. Hope you can do it soon :)
I applied for an internship in Split today. Hopefully I get it, cuz it looks absolutely astonishing. I would not mind living there for 4-5 months;)
Exciting to hear! Hope you get it!
@@samuelandaudrey thanks mate;) I´m just curious but can a person take the train directly from Split to Dubrovnik? if you might know that;)
there is no train from Split to Dubrovnik but bus..
Going there for my birthday! 23rd July IM SOOOOOOO EXCITED!
Wow! Sounds awesome. have a great trip.
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos thank you! I’m having a great time 😁
Omg 12:41 look at the guy in the middle pulling his kid hahahhahaahhah
I live in Split-ja zivim u Splitu💜🇭🇷
Very cool to hear!
Love your videos. Ever consider going to Chisinau, Moldova and a day trip to Tiraspol, Transnistria? You could also make a day trip to Odessa, Ukraine, which you said you would like to visit someday. If you decide to come, I suggest early May and make a May 9th visit to Tiraspol on Victory Day to witness the Victory Day parade which is an old Soviet military style parade. Nearly all the people carry photos of relatives who died in WW II fighting the Nazis. It is very moving. I am an American and have been living in Chisinau for six years. Chisinau is a great place to stay for a month or more. You can work from your own furnished apartment and take inexpensive trips throughout much of Eastern Europe.
Bokeria restaurant is where I had the most incredible Burrata with tomato salad and pesto bread *drool*
Oh, that is awesome! I don't think they have many bad items on their menu!
Thank you for all your good and interesting travel videos. I also like your editing. In what program do you edit your videos? Thanks
Thank you very much! We use Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Elements.
Amazing place, but even more amazing, how did you guys get the place all to yourselves? I thought it would've been more crowded?
Thanks! We visited a bit off-season. It must be crowded in the summer.
Been there done it..got the t shirt..back again next year..Charlie's bar where all the Foreigners go crazy and loft 92 I believe...banging as well as the Roman ruins....sweet as
Since 2012 Audrey still looks so snazzy and Sam's like a tourist. Even in Canada
Congrats to Audrey :)
Thank you so much - we're going in May 2019 and am looking forward to following your footsteps. Definitley going to try the burger at Bokeria, and also Konoba. Split looks amazine. Did you go the Hvar? We are taking the ferry from Dubrovnik. Do you think we should stay one day in Hvar, and onto to Split. Or go straight to Split and do a day tour to Hvar? Thanks lots
Thanks Rosita! That is great to hear. If you have enough time spend a night in Hvar as well. We also made a video about our experience staying in Hvar.
I loved Split, specially the Riva Promenade, the food. I did not know it had such a strong influence from the Ancient Roman Empire. That was very interesting to know. By the way, if you could choose just one city to visit in Croatia, would you go to Split or to Dubrovnik?
Thank you! Oh, that is a great question. I think Dubrovnik is a bit more touristy but for good reason but Split has a more local vibe. I think to stay long-term I'd recommend Split but for only a day or two maybe Dubrovnik.
Split is better choice. Dubrovnik is all money money and food is bullshit.. If you want good food restaurant STARI MORNAR . A++++
I don't think you wanna go to Varoš at night tho !! Especially after season !! You only say nice things about my town !! Nice video
Thank you!
Pa je tebi varos opasan!? Ajde lovi gusterice
Always looking forward for your videos. It also gives us a guide on where to eat and how much it cost. If you were to choose 5 best cities in europe you visited, what will you choose?
Thank you very much! Oh, that is such a great question. If it was your first visit to Europe I would suggest visiting at least one mega city like London, Paris or Rome along with some more scenic ones like Tirol region in Austria, Porto, Granada and maybe somewhere underrated like Malta.
Thank you for your reply and suggestions! Paris and Rome are indeed great cities. Scenic ones sounds interesting esp Tirol.
Just been to Split and I must say that the old town is overcrowded and full of tourist traps, especially crappy food stalls, souvenir shops and so on. I know this goes for a lot of destinations around the Mediterranean sea, but still, I would recommend exploring the shores of Split rather than spending too much time inside the city. The shore is a mix of both scenic cliff spots and trendy beach clubs, and the water is completely turquoise and transparent. Also, the islands located near Split are perhaps even more lovely, so be sure to rent a boat/take the ferry over there.
Thanks for sharing your experience. You visited in the middle of summer?
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos - Yes I did, perhaps that’s why it was so crowded ...
Great video!!! I’m am currently experiencing jet lag from my flight from Chicago to split yesterday and am up at 12:30 watching videos to plan today’s adventure! We are definitely going to try to hit all of these places, especially the palace, market, grgur, Varos and the lunch spot you went to! We continue on to Hvar and then Dubrovnik so I’ll be sure to watch the rest of your videos to find other cool places to check out!!
Thanks Corey! Hope you have a fantastic trip.
Bokaria Kitchen & Wine bar doesn't have the burger anymore :-\
I had the grilled octopus instead, which was very good aswell, 9/10
Oh glad you had a tasty meal still. Wonder why they got rid of the burger.
Thanks for the great video! I'm heading to Split in a couple days (currently in Zadar and loving it!), and this gave me a lot of places to add to my list. I'm curious - how do you two sustain your travels? My partner and I currently work online as English teachers, which has sustained us for 6 months through 7 countries, but we're looking to expand a bit. I saw on your profile that you met while teaching English in Korea, but I'm curious to hear more about how you two make it as travel bloggers and if you do anything on the side. I hope you're doing well, and happy travels!
Hi Kaila,
Yes, we met in Korea - we were both on 1 year teaching contracts there, which was great to save up and then go travel. We also started working on our blogs around that time (monetizing with ads and affiliates), and focusing on our UA-cam channel which eventually lead to opportunities with brands and tourism boards.
@@samuelandaudrey Very cool! I'll have to look into that for the future. How did you like teaching in Korea? My partner and I are considering switching to teaching at a school instead of online to make and save up more money, and Korea is on our short list (along with Vietnam, China, Japan, and possibly Thailand). Would you recommend the school or program you did? Many thanks!
i have my orchestra exercises in this red building on left...(12:26)
Thanks for making lots of lovely videos on both Croatia & Montenegro . Since we are now planning to visit only a city on coming mid November for 2-3 days, would you advice to go for Split or Kotor?
Thank you! That is a tough decision. Kotor has more hiking options and viewpoints but Split has better food.
Why not both? They're not far away.
Awesome video! Is there a train service between Split and Dubrovnik and if so did you consider taking it ?
We went to Dubrovnik in Feb 2020 and loved it! (stayed at Hotel Dubrovnik Palace which was amazing!). We are now planing a visit to Split and found your video useful. Any recommendations for 5 start hotels? It's for a special occasion - thank you in advance :)
First thing, platz is not Dioclecian pallace but whole center of town.
When did you visit, as it seems cold when you went?
I'm going 23-30th June and wondering if I'll need scarves and jumpers!
We visited in early March. It must be warm when you're going.
no
No, it's hot. Because I live in Croatia
trust me you won't be needing scarves and jumpers in Split in late June lol
Need a recommendation for a small romantic restaurant in Split!
Have you been in "Mestrovich museum"?Ivan Mestrovic was famous croatian sculptor with statues in all world. For example-Indian in Chikago.
We didn't Would love to though.
I think that since you've already created a separate video for the food, you should leave the food out of the Things to Do videos. I find myself skipping the food sections to get to to the next activity,. But that's just my opinion.
Thanks for the feedback about that.
Music is by???? It sounds familiar. Found it!!
Good to hear.
Croatia is an amazing place to visit. I went to split and Zagreb. Recommend split over Zagreb, will be going back again soon.
Cool to hear James!
You should visit Lika and Gorski Kotar... I also dare you tu Climb Biokovo in Makarska. 😉
Thank you for the suggestion!
Hi guys..what time of year did you visit Split ?..thinking of going mid October and a bit concerned about bad weather.
I actually think we visited around that time of year. It is a bit chilly and rainy at times but on the plus side you avoid the summer crowds.

I am going to Croatia next week with family and decided to spend 4 days in Split and 4 days in Dubrovnik. Any recommendations ?
That is exciting to hear Sarah!
Tip, when rice is coked then piece of good salty butter l'makes it cramy.. Black rizotto is done with inktfish sack of blackness. I love too black risotto with squid..
R U still raving over that gourmet burger over in CANADA?...:-)
We want them to expand to Canada ;)
I am planning a visit to Croatia in April, but I don't know if the weather is warm enough then. When was your trip? Thanks!!
It should be warmer than when we visited. We were there in November.
@@samuelandaudrey Thank you for the answer! Nice videos, I've subscribed.
What is your favourite beach near Split? I want to travel to Split and Brac this September. So would love to hear any beach recommendations :-)
Hi I need your advise.. which is better to visit first. Croatia or Spain. I"m planning to visit this year but im confuse. Planning to visit Andalucia and lisbon.
Oh my Kennedy. So hard to choose. Maybe I'd suggest Croatia first.
Can somebody tell me is it alloved to take our dog with public transport? This will be our first travel to Split and I hardly find any information about pets.. I appriciate every tips :) ( dog-friendly restaurants etc...)
