      Nah how about three GCN riders against one GTN rider, over an Ironman bike leg.....🤔
      With everyone on TT bikes, the GTN rider would have the advantage of being more accustomed to riding both the distance and being in the aero position, but the GCN riders have the advantage of being pure cyclists........
      Could be interesting as both have advantages and weaknesses

      How about GTN vs GCN and have them do both TT and road bikes. You would be emphasizing the roadie bike handling and paceline skills vs the Tri riders having better positions and familiarity with riding a TT bike. My money would be on GTN on the Tri bikes and GCN on the road bikes.

      Kimberly Sparkles it’s schoolboy (excuse the sexist term), humour.
      You are right, we never grow up, put simply, it’s a release from stress and having to always be grown up.
      Tell me you’ve never had a secret boogie to a radio track , or done a mildly inappropriate happy celebration, somewhere inappropriate when you thought no one was watching and you were in a great mood because everything was going so right. I know I have. Same thing, it’s just a tension breaker, just with fart humour.

    @prestachuck2867 4 роки тому +14

    Not the result that I expected, but then Conor and James-Hank didn’t appear to have ridden very well together. It looks as if Hank kept dropping Conor which forced him to have dig deeper to get back up to the wheel each time Hank pulled through. That would have very quickly slowed their overall pace as Conor became progressively tired and therefore slower each time he had to pull.

    Great episode. Congratulations Si! From what I watched in junior competition, U17 riders, ride an average of 45 km/h in 10 km TT on 46x14 gearing on a road bike without aerobars. Discs are not allowed too. When they move to U19 category, they ride around 5 km faster on TT bike with 52x14 gearing. So there seems to be around 3-4 km/h difference between road bike and TT bike. I would expect 3 roadies beat one time triallist. For two, I would expect a very close run.

    But what I'd like to know - How much fitness has Conor lost in a year? Last year he was holding 440 watts easily for "how long can you hold world hour record pace". This was only a 10km effort, could he hold 440watts for this?

  • @timbohan
    @timbohan 4 роки тому +1

    Try it for a much longer distance and see who wins. On such a short course it’s basically a high speed sprint so of course the aero bike will win, it’s faster by design. But having two riders to switch off on the front will help maintain a higher average speed only on a much longer course when a single rider becomes fatigued. Try the same test on a 40km course and see who wins. Then throw in some hills and see who’s faster.

    Impressive as hell, but how much does aero help for mere mortals like me who struggle to hold 250W for more than about five minutes? I'd love to see you guys run another vid like this but perhaps trying to stick to average power levels like, say, the sustained ~200W of your amateur or CAT5 racer.

    • @paperwind
      @paperwind 4 роки тому +10

      My physics calculator says at 200 watts over a pan flat 40k with no wind, you'd save roughly 10~15 minutes between an extremely dialed TT fit and a very draggy road bike. You can do a 40k TT in just about an hour on 200 watts on that kind of course, maybe even quicker on an indoor track. Less powerful riders actually save more time over the same distance than more powerful riders, counter-intuitive as it may seem.

    • @gillesbkf4315
      @gillesbkf4315 4 роки тому +10

      @@paperwind
      The drag increases by the square of the speed but the drag is proportional to aero coefficient and cross section. So if you are more powerful, you will be on the higher end speeds, where drag is dictated by speed^2, reducing a little bit the aero coefficient will allow you to gain a little bit more speed, but 2kph more when you’re already at 50 is a big difference, no matter the aero coefficient.
      But for a 200w rider as you say, the same aero bike would boost him from 35 to 38 kph.
      52^2 -50^2 = 204
      38^2-35^2 = 219
      That means that (the effort you need to add or) the drag you need to reduce is somewhat the same if you want to go from 35 avg to 38 avg compared to 50 avg to 52 avg.
      +3 kph for a 35 kph rider is +8,5% speed
      +2 kph for a 50 kph rider is +4% speed
      It’s literally twice as effective !

      Time saved over a given distance tends to be a good indicator of aero savings, as it remains almost constant regardless of you power output.
      Incidentally I just tried short aero bars on my road bike today. I'll have to work on the position, but being able to reach and sometimes exceed a cruising speed of 40km/h on the flat is a nice feeling!

      @@sventice From a point of view possibly...but the peloton exist so the tip of the spear has the energy to finish first...the rest of group is left to die at the end. So if you go full kipchoge....maybe....but I think stacking the deck that hard to carve out an exception isn't fair. I mean if you are going to get a full peloton to beat one TT then what could two TT's do against a peloton of cyclists to be even remotely fair?
