Shall we try 3 riders vs a TT bike next? 🤔
Keep going until the breakaway fails. "Shut up legs!"
Yes
Also,as recent as 2011, well its pretty recent in cycling history 😂
No, you should have made Si one of the two duo riders to have that control factor.
Nah how about three GCN riders against one GTN rider, over an Ironman bike leg.....🤔
With everyone on TT bikes, the GTN rider would have the advantage of being more accustomed to riding both the distance and being in the aero position, but the GCN riders have the advantage of being pure cyclists........
Could be interesting as both have advantages and weaknesses
I'm like 30 seconds in and I'm laughing at the idea of Conor sheltering behind Hank.
Hank and Connor should have employed invisible Aero bars in their riding style. Maybe it would have helped.
Was literally thinking the same thing
Conor: What is all that noise?
Wind: It's me.
I was thinking the same thing!
Hank can't shelter behind Conor either, all the air goes underneath
Best GCN Video in awhile! Enjoyed the screen chemistry of Connor, Hank and Simon! Brought out a real LOL. Thanks!
Really nice & funny video in a while. They should do more stuff like this
I agree, great video. Reminds me of old Top Gear!
Agreed - great vid!
I had no idea how much I'd been missing Si's Beep, beep, beep, beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep....
Gold
Siiiiiiiiiiimoooooooon
ua-cam.com/video/7beck87cKLU/v-deo.html
Yes they need to do that more. I been doing it everytime I start my commute lmao
This now requires a GCN team time trial. Here are the teams, Ollie and Manon, Si and Dan, Hank and Conor
Not a bad idea at all. However, I think Nigel and George should take some part in proceedings.
Manon and Hank are clearly a dream team; put Ollie with Conor, as Ollie's a bit taller and can shelter Conor.
How about GTN vs GCN and have them do both TT and road bikes. You would be emphasizing the roadie bike handling and paceline skills vs the Tri riders having better positions and familiarity with riding a TT bike. My money would be on GTN on the Tri bikes and GCN on the road bikes.
Hm hank and Connor are a bit too strong together
I wonder how much mineral water you have in stock to convince Dan to do a time trial
Bruh Conor is riding such a large frame that he looks like he is riding a totally different bike compared to Hank...
That’s the largest frame I’ve ever seen.
He’s 6 feet 29 inches. In metric that is one giraffe tall.
ua-cam.com/video/7beck87cKLU/v-deo.html
He literally is riding a totally different bike, fool.
James Dahl so what 8ft 5inch
All 3 dislikes as of time of commenting were given by Ollie Bridgewood, Ollie Bridgewood, and Ollie Bridgewood.
They took that man's KOM😄😅😂😂

When following Si on Strava spoilers the video - Sick effort by all three!

@@samuelclaircote3976 13:40
@@rickjohnson4887 Oh! My mistake! Sorry for misunderstanding.
Puts them at just under a 22 min 10 mile/16km time trial.
Not blistering but still pretty quick. Si was closer to 20 mins.
@@samuelclaircote3976 It's actually 13min
@@samuelclaircote3976 lol did you watch that and really think they averaged 12mph? Looked a tad quicker then 12 lol
3 grown men, probably, having the best times of their life
ua-cam.com/video/7beck87cKLU/v-deo.html
Just imagine Si's time if he hadn't taken the Snickers weight penalty...
Or if he had the high socks the UCI is so concerned with.
Or not having the 9 year gap of riding a tt bike
or consumed the Snicker bar prior... an extra 500cal to burn!
More videos like these more like the old gcn videos keep them coming. That TT bike looks amazing I would feel nervous rising a TT bike on a public road.
Si is still a beast though 👍
Si’s face when the time was revealed was priceless.
Hank's reaction says it all 😂
@@GreatJoey91 when simon started to laugh, hank knew that he had lost ;-))
Thumbs up for Si's suffering. His position is not even ultra-refined either. But 360 for 13 mins is solid power on the TT bike.
Triathletes everywhere just sat up and pulled up their socks-- oh wait.
I always predicted the TT position would win.
On another note I reckon Hank and Conor should have been doing slightly longer efforts as with the short efforts there is more time spent side by side where they are both getting no benefit of drafting.
It's an interesting optimisation question
How do you know how long their efforts have been?
@@luca3976 . They mention it during the video.
I think if they had trained together to achieve smoother through and off and work on positioning behind the lead rider it definitely would have been slightly the other way...
Yes let's see 3 against one
Next challenge: lets take 3 riders vs 1 tt rider
TT bike will still win because it’s literally an advert for a new TT bike

Today's GCN video is brought to you by James and The Giant beanstalk.
"who needs friends when you have every aerodynamic device known to humanity?"
poor connor not only had to ride harder on the front than hank as he’s bigger but also then couldn’t draft him as his whole upper body broke wind
Scary thought being behind a rider as big as Connor as his whole upper body breaks wind (think about it.... 😆)
Colin B that’s a big concern too😂
ha ha .. breaking wind .. ha ha ( sorry schoolboy humour )
My mom taught 5th grade. She says that men never really outgrow the discovery of the magic of farting as a joke.
She said this while giggling. She was really popular with 5th grade boys. She has some real stinkers to share.
Kimberly Sparkles it’s schoolboy (excuse the sexist term), humour.
You are right, we never grow up, put simply, it’s a release from stress and having to always be grown up.
Tell me you’ve never had a secret boogie to a radio track , or done a mildly inappropriate happy celebration, somewhere inappropriate when you thought no one was watching and you were in a great mood because everything was going so right. I know I have. Same thing, it’s just a tension breaker, just with fart humour.
Not if you're up against Pogacar 😂
Freak Dog or two riders from the old sky train.
James and Connor look like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito characters in the movie “Twins” 😃
The Si-borg still has it; he'll be grinning on this one for a while. Ah, the competitor streak runs strong in you Si. Well done mate
I think Alex Dowsett just proved that one time trialist on a normal bike can beat five (and later two) guys working together on similar bikes.
always loved these GCN challenges. Challenge suggestion: GCN presenter relay (two teams). 1 round road, 1 round TT, final round gravel/cross.
GCN: ... have you ever wondered...
Me: No.
GCN: Well, we have too.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I had Si's back from the beginning!
When you only have 10k to go you don't need that much recovery...
But strong efforts from everyone!💪👍
Not the result that I expected, but then Conor and James-Hank didn’t appear to have ridden very well together. It looks as if Hank kept dropping Conor which forced him to have dig deeper to get back up to the wheel each time Hank pulled through. That would have very quickly slowed their overall pace as Conor became progressively tired and therefore slower each time he had to pull.
Love the chemistry between the presenters in this video! Si's taking of the KOM off Ollie also got a laugh out of me XD
I paused at "just 360 Watts" to cry
Nicely done
I do have a FELT IA16 2018 and I love it
It’s pure power
Cheers from NYC
11:36 My heart sank when the Duo hit the floor! 😳😢
Si says he has “no one to let him down,” seemingly forgetting about himself
But he didn't! Even though he thought he would!
Nothing better than starting the morning with a GCN vid
This is a great episode! Excellent work Simon! I recently acquired a TT bike and I am smashing a lot of the local KOMs 👌🏻Thanks for another great show!
Best video for a good while. There’s no way Si kept that snack on the bike the whole time though. It must weigh 30g.
Try it for a much longer distance and see who wins. On such a short course it’s basically a high speed sprint so of course the aero bike will win, it’s faster by design. But having two riders to switch off on the front will help maintain a higher average speed only on a much longer course when a single rider becomes fatigued. Try the same test on a 40km course and see who wins. Then throw in some hills and see who’s faster.
10:11 Happiest. Face. Ever.
Fantastic video guys.....!!! Love a head to head challenge!! Trý 3 lads v Ollie on a TT bike now please
I had not realised how tall Connor was, he’s so HUGE! Fantastic video too :). Please GCN do a team TT against GTN!
Not huge, just tall
mad respect for Si! great video
GCN: Have you ever wondered if one rider on a TT bike can beat two riders on road bikes
Me: No, but now you have my attention... 🧐
Great vid and thanks for including the power numbers at the end. 👍 Made the vid far more useful and interesting. Keep up the good work guys. 😊👍
This episode deserves its own The Breakaway Episode.. Bradley Wiggins sharing his knowledge of time trials, Brian Smith on the big screen analyzing the teamwork of Hank and Connor, Bernie interviewing Si at the end of the race, and Orla interviewing the owner of the Giro Helmet that Si got from GCN HQ.
Yes! This content is so awesome! Like the content you produced four years ago!!! More like this
The perfect trifecta of GCN presenters! This video was brilliant in every way!!
Thanks, Donna!
Does Conor actually get any draft at all following Hank?!
He only gets a draft following a bus.
Have they done anything on drafting with different sized riders. Personally I don’t notice a huge difference when drafting big vs small guys...maybe the deflection of the wind means even a small guy puts out a big pocket of clean air
@@jwfriar My friend and I compared this. I'm over 190, he's like 170. We did a 5 minute strava segment and when he was behind me he was in Z2. When I was behind him I was still above threshold. On the flat we have a similar strength
philip k Yeah - I wonder too if it’s shape as well as weight. I have a buddy with super broad shoulders and I suspect he’s just not aero at all, but prob gives me a better draft than a more narrow shouldered person.
I am 6'6". I have no idea whether Zwift is realistic or not, but I never notice any draft effect when I'm outside riding with people. I admit I don't get much of it in zwift either since people just pass me not giving me a chance to draft :)

I would not want to get a seat behind him in the cinema.
This was a very entertaining video! Great job!
My god that TT bike is beautiful.
Disc brakes aside
Conner: I did a top ten in a TTT in the vuelta.
Well aqua blue was 13th and Conner got dropped and finished 31 seconds down hahahahahahahahahaha
LOL !!! Haha I've been rumbled... memory definitely a little rosy of that day for some reason!
This was actually super thrilling to watch, I was so sure 2 rides would be faster. And I mean.. Hanks riding position is not exactly "not aero" 😄
That was some serious fun. I really thought that the team would get gold. Enjoyed the challenge though.
Awesome.... aero Ollie done in by his own love for aero, she’s a cruel world 😉
It is fitting.
ua-cam.com/video/7beck87cKLU/v-deo.html
I didn't see that result coming. Won't say names to avoid spoilers, but well done.
"I was doing 400 watts just holding your wheel" Well, yeah, no draft...LOL!
I like the humor guys, had me rolling on the floor and laughing. I had to watch it 2x for the laugh.
Aero optimized Si is ... well ... still Si.
Perhaps you should challenge him
Si has a high ftp even though he's a light guy. If anything he was probably riding close to 40+km/h
Si for the win ;)
@@jaspreetsidhu5708 I worked it out to average 45 km/h giver or take
Those time trial bike storage boxes make it look like a sneaky ebike
Would have been even more interesting to have stuck someone used to riding aero on the TT bike.
Shame you couldn’t have talked one of the GTN team into it - or were you scared to? 😉
I would love to see this team time trials GCN vs. GTN
That was the plan, but they were a bit busy, unfortunately!
Well if Sy already beats you guys, Mark woul hace made even more damage 🤣 maybe with 3 riders
André Bonilha lol I was thinking less beating GTN more humiliating, but was hoping that GCN would take the bait for some fun.
25miles of straight road. 4of GCN’s best vs 1TT PRO
Every show should have Si doing an aero dance!
Si “this is my aero dance!” Brilliant
It's really fun watching you guys go full gas and amazed by how much of a difference is. I could not stop to wonder if this win is purely coz of Si's fitness ability and not the bike.
The result was expected.
But what I'd like to know - How much fitness has Conor lost in a year? Last year he was holding 440 watts easily for "how long can you hold world hour record pace". This was only a 10km effort, could he hold 440watts for this?
MTB - dune buggy
Dirt jumper - Jeep
BMX - BMW M3
Beach cruiser - Honda passport
Vintage Road bike - Audi R8
Modern road bike - Lamborghini Aventador
Time trials bike - F1 car
Really good watch that one. Loved the result reveal and shock. That is quite some time difference. As others have said, more content like this please.
Nice video, keep going something like this!
10km isn't very far. Over a longer distance, I'm guessing the results would be quite different.
Yep..the TT would be even further ahead. Aero is just so powerful when speed starts getting high. At high speeds you need a cubic more power vs linear for aero for the same speed increase. It is bonkers.
Same result
@@trepidati0n533 I'm not so sure. Over longer distances, the lone TT rider is going to get tired. There's a good reason the peloton exists.
@@sventice From a point of view possibly...but the peloton exist so the tip of the spear has the energy to finish first...the rest of group is left to die at the end. So if you go full kipchoge....maybe....but I think stacking the deck that hard to carve out an exception isn't fair. I mean if you are going to get a full peloton to beat one TT then what could two TT's do against a peloton of cyclists to be even remotely fair?
So I wonder if you have broken away in a professional race from the peloton, and had a malfunction on your road bike, can you replace it with a TT bike and thus guarantee yourself a win, in two riders are chasing behind? Loved the video, thanks!
I’d love to see these longer like the grand tour but with bikes instead.
With Matt...
they must build their own bikes with second hand components all totaling less than 1000 gbp then ride 200 km race, losers donate their bikes to a local bike club to get new riders into the sport.
Excellent video .... that answers my question
I saw one man on a recumbent take on a whole peloton in an open event. Aero is definitely King.
Finish Strong Cycling until you get to the hill.
@@favorites673 Agreed
Little did we know that the KOM snipe was going to be the least of Ollie's troubles
Three riders - gotta have 3 races. They each take turn riding the TT bike while other two do roadie. 😁
I loved the video but have been waiting 2 weeks to see Mark from GTN vs GCN. What happened? It was still an awesome race, way to go everyone.
I love this kind of video. Reminds me of the good days of Top Gear. So does that make Si as Clarkson and Conor as May, and James is Hammond. Doc Ollie is definitely coming after to regain that KOM. More please.
Top Ring lol
Ollie just needs to pull out a recumbent and one up Si.
yes i thought you would succeed. simply your presence through the air is more smoother and you really battered them. Good on you Si!
Saw something like this in a way today at the Giro Stage 8 with Alex Dowsett, Congrats!
Conor finished 13th in the team time trial in the Vuelta, which you'll note is actually outside of the top ten.
Whenever I pass someone on a time trial bike I always give them a wide girth so I don’t upset their aerodynamic advantage.
I think you mean berth
@@peterneal7724 i get right up their arses personally
Interesting choice of words

Brilliant challenge, I couldn’t have guessed the outcome. 👏🏻
You need to put them on a tandem!!

Am I the only one who thinks that Si with this TT kit and the TT bike looks even more badass than any final boss who we had to kill in the final battle of any PC game?
Maybe do this with two roadies who are more closely matched in stature so they actually benefit from drafting. This may change the results more in favour to the roadies.
Conor give Hank the benefit of his experience...they start...Hank in a non-aero helmet, gets excited gaps Conor and has to ease up to let him back on....genius :-)
Si throwing his celebration trophy on the floor after being so happy wanting to share it was really sad. I hope you enjoyed it, well deserved! Cracking vid for everything else in it though :D
I mean of course the TTer was going to win. TT bars are the game changer. Amazing looking bike as well
I’m increasingly amazed by aero, the boys were absolutely going for it and were nowhere near! Might need to save up for an tt bike, might be able to buy one in 10 years time.
They're about half as fast as a Milan and a lot more expensive.
brilliant had a massive laugh watching this, reason i love GCN
Disappointed this didn't involve Hank and Conor riding a tandem...
The best video on your channel...
I never really understood why tt bikes have disk breaks
Much easier to route hydraulic lines 100% internally - those small round cables have a fair amount of drag. Plus you get all the braking power and performance you normally expect. Typical TT bike integrated mechanical stoppers are not very good so better brakes means more time in the tuck before braking harder and later without overcooking a corner.
Theoretically since you no longer are crushing the rim with brake calipers, you could build a rim that doesn't need reinforcement there (tubbies only of course), thus making the wheel rims lighter.
Honestly, with the versatility and performance of hydraulics I'm expecting to see a tt bike with an additional brake lever on the extensions any year now. Why bother getting out your tuck to brake when a two-fingertip button inside your extensions works almost as well?
Si needs to go time trialing next season. Looks so smooth.
Hank and Connor, looks like uum.. 1 and a half man
That guy is a giant! Is it better or worse? Guess he has a lot more air resistance.
Just 360w!!!!????!!!!!
well, that answered a curiosity I've had for a while. I'm 2-6" shorter than most other riders but a full foot shorter than my husband. I sure do love drafting him! I do wonder if my draft is felt at all by him. I have a feeling Hank gave very little pull when it was Conor's turn to sit on his wheel. Perhaps Conor can comment on what his experience is when drafting other people?
I think a good percentage of the draft is the bike drafting behind another bike...your coefficient of drag by your bike is nearly zero compared to the bike in the front.
Your front scoop, hands below shoulders would be the huge percentage of drafting gain. Finally your head, somewhat aero shaped, moreso with a helmet would be the smallest percentage of your drag whether it's in a draft or not ...
