My nan would make a pudding similar to rice pudding but with pasta and I really miss it, I've never been able to get a recipe for it that was just like hers.
7-minute frosting and divinity all the two things that stand out prominently in my mind and of course every holiday there was a pecan pie and a small dish of candy yams. And then there was always the usuals that were consistent as well but these prominently send out and my mind from my childhood coming forward.
None of these desserts are forgotten. Banana pudding, for example: people enter contests to show off their best banana puddings, and every Southern or Soul Food restaurant has their own take on it.
You're right. Banana pudding and many of these desserts are still beloved staples, especially in Southern and Soul Food restaurants. They may not be forgotten, but they sure are timeless.
That's amazing. Those classic recipes are the best, especially for family gatherings. Banana pudding is a must-have. 🍌 Thanks for sharing your sweet tradition.
Only had one grandma growing up & she went thru the Great Depression, so no real fancy desserts here. The desserts she made were apple pie, peanut butter cookies, & yellow cake with a meringue icing. For Thanksgiving, my mom & aunts were responsible for the pies. She came to our house for Christmas where my mom & dad did the cooking. Dad was responsible for the turkey or ham while Mom did the rest.
Sounds like you have some special memories. Those simple, homemade desserts like apple pie and peanut butter cookies carry so much love and nostalgia. And it’s great how everyone had their role during the holidays what a lovely tradition!
I still make my grandmother's banana pudding for holidays. It is a double boiler custard, with lady fingers and is served warm. I also make apple brown betty for my grandkids. My sons and husband love pineapple upside down cake. I remember my Mom's fondue parties in the 70s. Every southern gathering has a pecan pie and is homemade, I use sorghum syrup in mine. I can't make a tunnel of fudge cake to save my life. People still eat strawberry shortcake .I made rice pudding for my mother and grandmother when they were alive and I make it now for my little grandkids. I just made a lemon meringue pie for the church supper. Chiffon cake is bland unless used with fruit. Coconut cream pie is still made but most people just buy it now, I made it as a kid with my grandmother. We also canned jams and jellies in the summertime.
Sounds like you’ve got some delicious family traditions.🍰 Homemade banana pudding, pecan pie, and pineapple upside-down cake your gatherings must be a treat! Thanks for sharing.🥧
Hey banana pudding is still alive and well all throughout the South! Relics, my eye!!! Pineapple upside cake and apple brown betty, these are so common everywhere too
That sounds like a wonderful idea. Banana pudding is a classic, comforting treat that's perfect for sharing with the grandkids. They'll love the creamy layers and sweet banana flavor what a great way to create new memories while introducing them to a timeless dessert.
I remember baked Alaska when I was little! It was made with parfait creme ice cream and it was served in an orange cup topped with the meringue . I loved it !
I believe I just saw the Preppy Kitchen guru making that coconut cream pie, first I thought that copper pot was his, then I saw the checkered shirt and I was positive it was! He’s a fabulous baker! And a really nice young man to boot!
When we lived in California we were fortunate to get to go have dinner at a Marie Callender’s restaurant, they served real good food, as I recall some of the best hamburgers around, but the reason we liked going so much is because of getting a slice of pie for dessert! Every slice of pie was heavenly, as though your Mom had just made it earlier that day. The worst part was trying to decide which flavor to get, I would usually have the German Chocolate Cream pie w/Meringue, and then we’d buy a whole pie or two to take home. Not sure if there is even one of her restaurants opened now, and that makes me a little sad. I did however figure out how to make a German Chocolate Cream pie with Meringue which everyone who’s tried it raved about it! And it was surprisingly easy. 😊
Marie Callender’s pies were truly something special. It’s great that you’ve managed to recreate the German Chocolate Cream pie with Meringue at home. Your version must be a hit! 😊
Sounds like a mix-up. The Tom & Jerry cocktail and the cheese dish are definitely different. Thanks for pointing that out.I'll be sure to double check the visuals next time to match the descriptions better. Thanks
I think that here in Brazil we live in the past, because many of these sweets we still make, specialy on Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, where there are many families descendents from Europe.
The title should say most grandmas instead of "your" grandma. I never got to meet any of my grandparents, grandmas or grandpas, on either side. It probably doesn't bother most people but it reminded me that my mom lost her mom when she was only eight years old. Blessings of love and light to all.
I’m sorry to hear that. I appreciate your perspective changing it to "most grandmas" would be more inclusive. Thank you for sharing, and sending love and light your way as well. ❤️
My grandparents were all gone before I was born, so I share your pain. It made me cherish and respect my parent even more. What a precious gift they were. I miss my parents every day.
I am so sorry for the fact that you never had grand parents. Maybe you can be a great grand parent.!!! If you don't have children , find a child that does not have a grand mother and jump right in. If you love a child. , it is a known fact they will love you back.!!!! Family comes in all forms. 💙💚💛🧡❤
@@OldGloryDays77 she and her husband ran a dairy in the 1920s. He died young and she ran it. Made 4 loaves of bread a a big pot of beans every day to feed the workers. Did Your Grandma Have a Dessert She Always Made?

'Naner pudding. Somebody isn't from the South
Pecan Pie is still a staple in the south and also in many restaurants around the country!
That's so true.Pecan pie definitely holds a special place in Southern hearts and beyond. Some things never go out of style.
And not only in the South! Who hasn't eaten pecan pie? How is it forgotten?

Forgot Bananas Foster. Woo delicious.
Bananas Foster is such a treat. The combo of caramelized bananas and that rich sauce is just heavenly. Definitely a classic.
Now I am in the mood for banana pudding! Think I will introduce it to my grandkids.

True banana pudding has toasted meringue on top not cool whip.
Absolutely. 🍌🥄 Toasted meringue adds that perfect touch to banana pudding. Cool Whip might be convenient, but nothing beats the classic.
I’m carrying on Mamas tradition at holidays by making pies with homemade merengue 😛

Absolutely! In England, Apple Brown Betty is known as Apple Crumble, and adding rhubarb is a delicious twist. Both are great with custard.
So where are the recipes?? I’m sure I’m not the only one that would like to try
Great point.Sharing recipes would be a fantastic addition. I’ll look into adding some classic recipes for everyone to try out. Stay tuned!.

What was with the Tom & Jerry. A cocktail was described, but what was shown was some type of cheese dish. Didn't match at all.
Tom and Jerry was orange flavored white chocolate. They put it in cheese molds as a humorous nod to the cat and mouse cartoon, Tom and Jerry

Unless you peeling a can…. It’s pu can.
You’re right. It’s "peel can" as in "peeling a can," not "pu can." Thanks for the correction.
My grandmother never cooked or had desert. We ate out.
Sounds like your grandmother knew how to keep it simple. Eating out can be just as memorable. 😊

Haha, you caught that. I guess I should work on my pronunciation, pecans can be tricky 😂
These are still cooked and eaten today. What an incorrect video.
Thanks for the feedback. In some states, these classics may have vanished, but many are still enjoyed today.
