When I was little there were plenty times we used powdered milk. It wasn't like the real thing so to speak but it helped with bowls of cereal and in my mom's coffee. I also grew up with beans on toast never knowing it was a British meal till I was an adult. I loved it.

its a bit sad that , with how things are going, the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, many people dont know how to afford groceries these days. This will help a lot of people in the future, while billionaires eat caviar with champagne.

My mom never made sheperd's pie but instead she would mash potatoes, sautee onions, and put it all into a homemade crust. There was always extra butter (we had cows) and that pie was so loved. I still make it and it brings back happy memories. We also had Johnnycake quite often. In fact, many of us preferred them to pancakes. I was born in the aftermath of the depression but mom and dad barely made ends meet so mom just continued her "depression time" cooking.

My mom and dad lived through the depression. I hear from my older brothers and sisters that they maybe had it a little better than some. They lived on a farm so they usually had eggs meat milk vegetables from a garden etc I wasn't born til 61 but my mom still made alot of 'milk potatoes'(potato soup) and rice cooked and we ate it as main dish for supper. I don't think we felt like we're doing without; well by then 1960s things were alot better. I still remember eating alot of fried bologna and mashed potatoes and the potato soup. I remember my dad saying that when he was younger when he worked on construction jobs, he'd go to a local restaurant for lunch and have a piece of bread with gravy and coffee for 25cents..My mom said that when she was a little girl in the early 1920s she and her sister and brother felt like they were rich when they got an orange for Christmas. Btw I liked the video. Thx for posting

Very good video. My mom was big on pot roasts and stews. A little meat and a lot of vegetables. It was always good! As a way to get us to eat cheaper foods, my mom said we were going to go around the world in cooking, so she made a bunch of budget recipes that were Italian, French, Asian, and British. We ate stuff we wouldn’t have normally eaten without complaint. You could do the same thing with historical time periods.

I had a couple of favorite foods that my grandmother used to make. The potato pancakes, potato soup, onion soup, the Johnny cakes, so many of them I've had. And for dessert, my favorite was the rice pudding. My grandmother used to add cinnamon and raisins to it and served it warm. It was so good and comforting. I didn't think there was so many good dishes I've had, but I guess back then you just had to use whatever you had available. Great video.

I’ve yet to see a SINGLE person besides my old AGM at Taco Bell reminiscing over TB’s Pacific Shrimp burrito/taco It was my favorite as a kid!

Thanks for sharing your story! It’s amazing how those Depression-era meals and lessons on being frugal stick with us. Even today, those simple, hearty dishes still bring comfort. 😊 Pot luck stew-love the name

Those onion nuggets sound pretty good like they'd have been a good side in stead of onion rings mc Donald's could've called them mc onion poppers or something...i miss the Super size option...and cheaper prices but i was kinda poor as a kid and my family would go to mc Donald's and order a few .89¢ and.99¢ burgers and super size the fries and drink and the 3 of us would split it... also miss true .99¢ menues and the taco bell .59¢ .79¢ and 89¢ and 99¢ menue ..dang it now im hungry and feeling old .and is it just me or has fast food shrunk and tastes like a home ec fail..and kfc is over priced garbage now its cheaper to buy chicken and cook it yourself 😅

Totally feel you! Those were the days affordable prices, super-sized portions, and the real flavor! Fast food has definitely changed a lot. And you’re right, cooking at home can often be the better deal now. 😅 Thanks for the trip down memory lane
