Texas Toast is around a good part of the time. Same for Beans and hot dogs. Chicken pot pies. Scalloped potatoes a few times a year. 7 layers salads don't look as good but we still have in. No to spam. I miss Liverwurst. Potato pancakes quite often.
@@OldGloryDays77 You're welcome! The black cow ice cream treat is even good with diet root beer. When I was a kid, you could get Ice Milk. My Mother would frequently use ice milk to make this treat too. It was a lower fat version of ice cream. Can't find it today, but I think that a low fat or healthier version of today's ice cream would work just fine.
My mom used to make chop suey all the time while I was growing up. She used chunks of pork cooked in chicken both with lots of onions, celery, bell pepper s,garlic, mushrooms and bean sprouts! Served over rice it was delicious 😋😋😋😋! She made several of these dishes mentioned here! Thanks for a trip down memory lane!!❤❤❤❤
I have made over half of these recipes, and please, corn cowder has been around a lot longer than the 1970's. Check out Tasting History with Max Miller he does a corn chowder from a recipe used by the lighthouse keepers I think, in the late 1800's
Absolutely.. Texas toast and pot pies are definitely still popular and easy to find in grocery stores today. And you're right there's something to be said for the simpler, home cooked meals from back in the day. They often had more whole ingredients and less processing than much of today's convenience food. It’s interesting how some of these classic foods have stood the test of time.
I was born in the 1950's, started cooking in the '70's, and I still make Salmon Patties, Scalloped Potatoes and Potatoes Au Gratin, Potato Pancakes, Pork Chop Suey and occasionally Beanie Weenies. Liverwurst is a VERY occasional guilty pleasure, on good white or rye bread with mayo, mustard and a slice of fresh red onion - accompanied by an ice cold pint of dark beer...Yes! Texas Toast is still a big seller in the frozen food department around here, as are Pot Pies. I've got to try the Egg Cream and Chicken Divan. Thanks for this interesting stroll down Culinary Memory Lane.
Greetings from Germany. Things like Salmon Patties , Beans 'n Franks , Cinnamon Baked Apples , Berry Compote , Popsicles , Spam Salad ( i do it al little diffrent) , Liverwurst Spread (try it on a dark rye bread with some mayo and some red onions) , Mock Turtle Soup , and Potato Pancakes (garnished with Sour cream and Salmon or more often just with applesauce ) are a staple in my daily cousine over here. And yes i turned away from this more traditional foods in my teens and twens but now that i´m in my mid 40´s i return to the foods my grandmother and mother made. Best regards Jan
Greetings, Jan! 🌍 It’s wonderful to hear about the traditional foods you enjoy. Salmon Patties, Liverwurst Spread on dark rye, and Potato Pancakes sound delicious! It’s great that you’re reconnecting with the dishes your family made.
I still make all these except for a few. I don't make the weird salad ones especially the hot dogs, spam or jello ones. I make jello, no veggies in it. I make Watergate salad though. I love a lot of these foods you mentioned. Never heard of Tang pie but it is like Pink Lemonade pie which I make. I know I'm not the only one who makes some of these foods. Anyone else???
Many of these were regional recipes and had nothing to do with the era. Heck I grew up with some of these, and like so many others, still make them. Oh, and true scallop potatoes do not have a cheese sauce but a cream sauce. Au gratin potatoes has the cheese sauce.
You're right, many of these dishes were regional favorites and not just tied to the era. And yes, scalloped potatoes have a cream sauce, while au gratin potatoes come with the cheesy goodness. Thanks for sharing.
My wife and I are in our 70s and there are a few of these summer foods that we still enjoy, Beans and hotdogs with barbeque sauce is a no-no that I sneak every once in a while. chicken pot pie is my favorite order at KFC, we eat whole berries with yogurt for breakfast two or three times a week, and have made zucchini bread or bought it at the store. We also still eat liverwurst on rye bread with a slice of onion and a dollop of Mayo. We also like potato pancakes. There was no such thing as leftover corn in the summer. We gorged on corn on the cob with butter and salt and pepper, until we had more butter and corn kernels on our face and napkins than we had in our mouths. As for the rest of them I once ate some, but no more. As for others like spam and perfection salad and Tang pie, I never have and never will eat those.
It’s great to hear that you and your wife still enjoy so many classic dishes! 🍽️ It sounds like you’ve got a well-loved menu that brings back fond memories. Enjoying corn on the cob and liverwurst on rye must be a delicious treat. 🌽🥪 Thanks for Watching
@@OldGloryDays77 Well thank you . I have a few other classics that I love. Have you ever had crab or shrimp Louie? or Chicken and Barley soup? Garlic Weiswurst? Tomato, Cucumber, and Green Pepper Salad, Baked Chicken with Dressing, French Onion Soup from the Famous Barr Department Store in St. Louis Mo.
Sounds like your grandma made a mean cinnamon apple dish! 🍏✨ Those memories are so special. It’s amazing how a dish can bring back such strong feelings and nostalgia.
That’s such a special memory! Learning to make scalloped potatoes with your dad must have been a great experience. Those family recipes are priceless. 😊
There is a dish with ground beef and spinach shown between the scalloped potatoes and crescent rings segments that looks good. What is that one called?
That dish is likely a type of Beef and Spinach Casserole or Spinach-Stuffed Meatloaf. These dishes often combine ground beef with spinach and other ingredients like cheese and seasonings, baked together for a comforting meal.
I get it soups and casseroles do have that cozy, cool-weather vibe. Summer foods usually lean more towards grilling and fresh, lighter dishes. Thanks for pointing that out..
I hear you. Summer foods are usually all about grilling and fresh dishes, not oven-baked. It’s definitely a different vibe depending on where you’re from.😕
Whoever wrote this must live under a rock or in a very strange part of the country. I'd love to know where you managed to get away from chicken pot pie and popsicles. Many of these are actually available in premade forms or in frozen form in almost every supermarket between philadelphia and indianapolis at least. (not the weird jello stuff obviously.)
It’s true, some of these classics are still pretty common, especially in certain areas. Chicken pot pie and popsicles are definitely hard to escape! Maybe the I just have a different experience, but it’s great to hear they’re still around where you are.
Which of these forgotten summer foods from the 1970s do you miss the most?
On what planet have these things been forgotten ? Not in my city, or home. Most of these things, I still make in a regular basis.
Glad to hear these dishes are still popular where you are! It’s great that they’re still a regular part of your meals.
We had salmon had patties with macaroni with tomatoes
Yummy
Yes scalloped potatoes, still make
Beans and franks? It's franks and beans! Or Beanie Weenie, if you must.
Oh Dear..Both 'beans and franks' and 'franks and beans' are correct! Beanie Weenie is just a fun twist. Thanks for watching.

You can find liverwurst online and at most national stores and. or Aldis and Wal-Mart.
I still make several pf these a lot. Corn Chowder or Seafood corn chowder is a HUGE FAVORITE a couple of times a month. Or sometimes , more than that.
That's wonderful..
Yep. Many of these dishes remain today.
My Mother used to make us a "black cow". Ice cold rootbeer over vanilla ice cream. Delicious.
Your mother knew how to make a classic treat... I'll definitely add black cows in a future video. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent, also made with chocolate ice cream and a coke. Mom's favorite. Please have a good evening B-).
Yes! Diet root beer works great. Ice milk was a lighter treat back then-low-fat ice cream is a good substitute today. Thanks for the tip.

Teas toast is awesome for grilled cheese
Salmon patties were around when I was a young kid in the 60s
Salmon patties definitely go way back.. A classic from the '60s.May you live long.
I had salmon patties last night for supper. We have it for supper a couple of times a month.
Salmon patties are a timeless favorite! Having them a couple of times a month sounds delicious. 🐟🍽️
Lol texas toast and pot pies are sold in every grocery store. Also, people who ate like this back then were a lot healthier than they are today.
