    Hi,
My name is Amy and I am 30 years old. I have lived a very active and healthy life style. I was not over weight and I have never had any major health concern. But I broke out with shingles three months ago and was diagnosed with PHN. I was prescribed Lyrica and Tramadol but I recently stopped and they severely interfered with my mental state. I am now off the meds but I am in constant pain. It has effected my sleep and my emotional health. I can’t imagine having to deal with this level of pain for the rest of my life. Is there hope? Is there a chance my nerve can heal from the damage? I am terrified that the pain will never stop.

Hi Amy- I have been thru chronic pain before, and now have cipn. Ultram is a drug I'm familiar with. Glad you're off it. One thing I have learned about chronic pain is that there are always ups and downs. I, too, have never been overweight, etc. I just beat cancer, and I believe we both can learn to manage this too :) Hope you're feeling better today-

Shingles in 2018 and my wife had a pain pump installed several months ago. She couldn't take two of the first meds tested so whey went with prialt which is non narcotic and it does nothing to help her neuropathy. The nurse came today to refill it and adjust it again so we're hoping some improvement.

7 months into PHN. Tried and stopped all the typical med. Only eating organic colorful veggies, on all the good suppliments.
The pain is worse at 7 months. Food isn't doing it.

My concern is that no one addresses the issue of Internal Shingle Issues which I had, and had to convince my Practitioner that it happened to me. I had the two shngles vaccine, but maybe it was ten years ago and not so effective any more? . So after having lots of stress in my life, and some pain in my leg due to an accident, I had a shooting pain through my arm pit. At first I thought it was a mild heart attack, not so. Then I had a tingling sensation up my back and no rash but a sort of crunchy feeling when I pressed on my back - about the same site which a rash woud occur. So I had to convince my Nurse Practitioner as to what happened and I had a chill going through my body, no fever. So I was given an 7 day anti viral medication. Now after a few months I still have the feeling in my back That;s my story which may be rare and I want to share it with you... There are stange things which can happen with your body

This is my exact situation. My doctor doesn’t believe in any shingles you cannot see. So frustrating. My pain might come from nowhere. I have literally gotten off an airplane and drove straight to a hospital to get pain medication. I have been having these attacks of pain off and on since 2005. No meds help me other than a few hours at a time. Ridiculous that Doctors really don’t k ow how to treat this. I just found a doctor in Omaha, Nebraska today Dr Aguilar, Total Pain Solutions. Reading your comment sounds like you are better now. This lady is speaking for mild cases. Mine is severe

My Father is 93 and has post herpetic pain for 18 months now with no relief. He has had several nerve blocks but nothing helps. He had gabapentin , tramadol, but fans patches and now Paracetamol PRN. He has never had a varicella vaccine . Would it be recommended or would it cause more pain ?

I get shingles every 12-15 weeks since I was 48. I am now 57 and it’s not just neuralgia. I get recurrent blisters every 12 weeks and have been on 3G of Valcyclovir for 9 years!

Unfortunately a large component of healing your immune/nervous system is being able to get some sleep at night, which this disease, between the relentless excrutiating pain, vicious itching, burning and zapping, makes it really difficult or impossible- which might be why diligently improving your diet and taking supplements just isn't cutting it for a lot of people, also especially since most oral and topical pain medications do nothing for a really bad case of shingles and subsequent post herpetic neuralgia and also the sometimes if you're unlucky enough, torturous post herpetic itching.

Yes! Sleep can be a very painful process when you are living with auto-immune or nervous system based diseases. I recently wrote a blog on my top tips I give clients to help them get a good nights sleep. While nutrition and supplementation may not be enough to get you the quality sleep you deserve, it may help make even a small improvement.

So I just read what not to eat when you have shingles. I'm in the fourth week fighting shingles in the pain is still incredible. A UA-cam video told me not to eat all the healthy food that I'm eating. No blackberries, No Blueberries, no grapes, no yogurt, no oatmeal. No prepared foods but I'm in too much pain to cook I have to eat TV dinners.

I am so sorry to hear that you are in pain. I personally wouldn't recommend my clients stop eating food like blueberries or grapes while combating shingles. They are both great for you and full of antioxidants. That being said, please make sure you are listening to your body and talking to your primary doctor before making changes to your daily nutrition.

Wow, I got shingles twice in last 4 months. I got this book called “The Shingles Solution “ by Julissa Clay and she claims that dietary changes are important, however, almost opposite of what you are being told: the book suggests avoid eating foods high in Arginine and supplement with lysine plus eating foods higher in lysine vs arginine. My diet for years was lots of nuts because they are good for your heart, plus I was eating gluten free foods which have almond flour in the base substitute for gluten. Avoid coffee and chocolate too- that was hard. I recommend the book

For my patients I have tried with some success red light therapy, stopping eating sweets like cookies, candy, etc., natural inflammatories such as Omega 3 or nettles, as well as acupuncture.

You mentioned post h-n being on one side of the body, but it’s possible to be on both sides, no? I have intense nerve pain: often a burning sensation, other times like ice, and incredible sensitivity/pain to any kind of touch. And it occurs *only* on the front of both legs, from torso to the knee. (Occasionally sensitivity spreads to my torso, site of the original shingles infection). The shingles were ten years ago & the nerve pain the last 9 years. My doctor suggested post herpetic neuralgia only after ruling everything else out. Just curious how often you see this presentation (both sides) as it definitely delayed my diagnosis.

Well, feeling how the blisters on my torso began to shrink within 3 days was very soothing, I applied what I talked about the other day and in two weeks the pain was gone. I just go'ogled Kaena Ramingler's Shingles Solution and now I feel as smooth and relaxed as I've ever been.
