The "original" as you put it was the FM78 (Feldmesser 1978) introduces one year after the Steyr AUG ("StG77") assault rifle - hence the hollow grip, though it was never used as a bajonett. Originally designed for the Austrian army the "real" ones which we were issued with will have a symbol on the blade, just in front of the guard: a circle with a triangle in it, symbol for the ÖBH (Österreichisches Bundesheer). Steel is 1085 high carbon, this knife is a utility field and combat knife. Tough, but easy to resharpen in the field, though it isn't meant to be sharp! We use it to chop, cut ice, pry doors open, dig in hard packed earth and pierce barrels. This was never made as a cutting weapon (slashing etc.). That grip will also save your hands in our winters (-20°C when I was on winter manoeuvres in the Alps). We abused the heck out of those things, but they never failed.
Mine came totally blunt except for the tip, was a bit disappointed since I have no idea on how to sharpen it without changing the blade edge profile. Was it meant to be used as a pure stabbing weapon in the Austrian army?
My friend took this knife with him on a clean up mission after hurricane Catrina and told me he actually cut open a car door with it. I'm so stubborn I still haven't picked one of these knives up yet.
Be advised, they only make the 78 in black now, so if you own a 78 in OD dont abuse them as much. If you want to silence the sheath, take some paracord inner strands, wrap the around the tip of the blade and stick it down the sheath. Now glue segments of the outer paracord inside the top of the sheath.
YOU ARE A GREAT GUY. I love the way you are testing the blades. We can rely on you my friend. Best testing on the field, humour and no bullshit; Thanks a lot, really. JohnMc
THX for youre help. I nearly bayed the wrong knife. Great Job great review. Got know a g81 as starter knife and it is a destructor. Thank you Mayor Fuglycool .
When I was in the Army we only got the SAK Dutch army model and is basically a bit thicker version of the SAK Soldier. Great pocket knife but I wanted something more sturdy so first chance I got I took my Glock 81 model in OD, like my uniform (we did not use camo back than) and this combination of pocket knife and Glock served me well. I was not allowed to carry it but they never did find out, so that's ok. ;) Later changed to the 78 model and altered it a bit. That bottle opener is part of the attachment to mount on a rifle, so I cut that part of, altered the bevel and some alterations to the sheath. It is probably the toughest 'plastic' handle around for a stick tang knife. Still use it when I want a second knife but not add to much weight.
The 81 (the version with the grater) is a prohibited weapon regarding the rules of war. They may be old but are still in place. The bottle opener makes a good handguard so you don`t slip and i guess it wold be quite effective if you happen to parade a other blade. The biggest downsides are rust, the problem to deploy it one handed asap and that you have to quiet them down yourself because they rattle.
There is a mora robust (14 dollar knife) destruction test like this and it took everything they tried and never broke, bent, or anything. Those are partial tang also.

Love the episode just looked up glock blades on UA-cam just got my 81 survival knife it's bad ass love it and you forgot to take the end cap off were you can use it for a spear
I'm looking for a video that shows the best way to remove the end cap so the hollow handle can be accessed. The hollow handle is for either storing survival items, or for converting the knife into a spear.
Update: there's now a fairly well known way to improvise the pommel. First, here's some trivial info: Gaston Glock designed these knives to be used as bayonets for the Steyer AUG rifle. The partially hollow handle has threads that screw onto a special piece on the rifle. Ok. Also, there's a commonly used system for fitting an M14 bolt into the butt. Some ppl blue the bolt. It makes an effective bone cruncher/hammer. A guy on Ebay offers the kit/instructions or will do it for you. It can be waterproofed with an o ring. A few folks have used the handle like a Rambo knife. Finally, I haven't found a source for purchasing replacement end caps. The caps usually become damaged while being removed. They are extremely tight from the factory.
So glad I found your channel lol, your hilarious and I wish I found your videos sooner. Found this after I purchased my very own glock 81 and wanted to learn more about it.

Well it wouldn't be a modern tactical knife if I didn't have a bottle opener...

Awesome man lol. What do you plan to do with the old one?
Plisken X51mm
I might keep using it until it just gets broken up.
I will say that the new version will be lots stronger.

Sounds good. Would be pretty cool to see how much longer the Mein Man will last.
Plisken X51mm
I might still use him for my tests, just have to see what happens.

Well now I have to buy one. Great video Sir.
You did to your glock knife, That I would not do. Got mine in 83 during my AT with the national Guard and used it for the six years I was in. The top of the cap on the handle was broken off from knife throwing, But it's still great.
Ive got the olive drab one. Boy I never new it was that tuff.
Oh yeah, the Glock knife can take a beating. Serious piece of kit, for around 35$. :)
