"My name is Sally, I own a physiotherapy practice in Cheshire.
I am an MSK physiotherapist by background and I've been qualified for about 24 years now.
I've got a good clinical background but I'm not a business management person.
I had very little experience of running a business other than working in the NHS and managing people.
When I came to own my own business, which was when my predecessor decided to give up and offered me first choice for the business and I said yes, it was extremely overwhelming. I have to say.
A friend said to me, if you have a business, Sally. You need to take time to work on it and not just in it. And if I'm honest, I didn't really know what she meant by that at the time.
When the HCPC updated guidelines came out, I think we all went into panic mode and pretty sure I'm not the only person.
And suddenly now it wasn't just me that I was accountable for, it was the clinic that I worked in and the people that I worked with and the staff that I employed.
So that was quite a change and I soon realised that I didn't have the skills and the background knowledge to be able to do it to what I felt was the best. That I needed to be doing. So that initially felt extremely overwhelming.
I didn't know where to start. And I did feel like I was working or living on a wing and a prayer most of the time, hoping that I was doing what I needed, but in the back of my mind, knowing that I probably wasn't.
And when I met Sandra and Sarah for the first time, it was very clear that what I had in place that I thought was OK was nowhere near enough.
So I had to put some effort in, put some work in on my part. To make IQ safe for everybody that attended and also the people that worked within it.
Working with Sandra and Sarah made me feel much more in control. They kept me focused and on track and supported through each area of concern. And believe me, there was a lot when I started.
Now I feel confident that I know how IQ runs from a business perspective, not just a clinical perspective. And it means that I am confident as well that IQ is safe for the staff and the public that come through my doors every day. It provides accountability for staff and ensures that I stay on track with any updates and changes for clinical needs.
I now know exactly what my friend meant by saying you need to work on your business as well as in the business and it's definitely made me a better business owner, a better clinician, a better team member and a better manager.
And the info that Sarah and Sandra have provided on my journey has been priceless and I would recommend it to anybody."
