    Everyone should have to watch this before applying to PT school. I’m introverted and didn’t understand just how people-facing the profession is until I started doing clinicals. It’s negatively affected my mental health and I don’t see it changing until I figure out an exit strategy. For now I work in acute care. I can go hide in a stairwell for 10 minutes whenever I need to! It’s sustainable-ish for me for now.

      @@jimnguyen6337 Do you not understand what "introvert" means? Lol. As a personal trainer and potential future physical therapist who's also an introvert, I love interacting with people but it can be overstimulating and exhausting to do it for hours a day. I still love it but can see how it would wear someone out.

      I am sorry to hear about your mental health declining. I suggest you consider teaching at some point and look for an online program. This often has less personal interaction until intensives. You can also conduct clinical research if you find an area that you are passionate about. I rarely reply, but your comments are profound and I hope you find peace soon. Your wellness and health are paramount!

    As a DPT for decade, great points. Unfortunately I don’t see this changing in the field. Less autonomy given to us than we actually deserve. Different states don’t allow different things and it’s a shame. Main thing also is there is minimal to no progression in our field in salary. Until we get access to images, prescribing limited pain medication like the PT in the military does, I don’t see it happening. With those, ppl who get certified and get extra education should be allowed with increase pay.

    When you said if you want to work in the medical field but you don't like blood or needles, I was like exactly!! But as a PT or PTA how do you avoid getting sick from patients that might be sick, or what if a patient has an infection? Do PT/PTA always wear gloves when treating patients? What precautions do they take?

    Do you need to be physically strong to be a physiotherapist? I'm very interested in this field but I'm not the strongest or sportiest person out there. I understand that one needs to be fit and healthy enough to lift or carry a patient but I can't even do push-ups... This is quite concerning to me.

    • @kristennicolosi
      @kristennicolosi  Рік тому +12

      hi! you definitely don't have to be super strong or sporty, but it is beneficial to be active and especially having a strong upper body for manual therapy! Also just by doing the job every day your body will strengthen to what it needs. a lot of it comes from your core and using your body weight to assist. I hope this helps!

    DPT's should be respected way more. I've bn to therapy twice, i must say the pt helped me out a lot more than the Dr. Did. He just prescribed me useless ibuprofen. The PT & PTA's actually helped me recover. With that said, i dont think this career field is worth it, unless you go PTA. its 2 years total, less than 10k, and decent pay in my area and the home health jobs are awesome (seems that way anyway). Im shooting for the PTA program this year.

      As a student in my last year of PT school who is also an introvert, there is definitely 100% hope! I have found that my favorite part of PT is building relationships with patients, even though I am introverted and need to recharge with alone time! Yes, it can be a little more draining getting to know a patient at first, but once you've had a couple sessions with patients, that bond you can develop makes it much easier and more fulfilling. As long as you like people and have empathy, the extroverted part of it is something you can build up stamina for :) Hope this helps because I know I was nervous about this before starting PT school.

      What I can say is you don't have to start the conversation perse. Ask about their hobbies or the last movie they saw. You don't have to be afraid if you have nothing to share from your side. Any topic, what kind of home to they have, ranch style, stairs, etc. You can be a good PT unless you are completely afraid of talking to others.

  • @johnguillen68

    I think becoming a PTA is my only way of trying to get in opposition to DPT. I don't understand how PTA is 2 years and then the other option is DPT where you can do it in 2 years but then if you become a PTA in 2 years you can bridge to DPT for another 2 and a half years. So that's 4 and a half years to become a DPT after PTA school.
    I don't have a good GPA at all and will never get picked for the DPT program. That's why I'm shooting for PTA. I know that I would love to be a PT because I used to be a personal trainer and trained people. I loved it but got into the medical field and now I have a BS in biology with a bad GPA and still working in the ER.
