An amazingly beautiful method of adjusting V-brake. An epic. Watched 10 videos of this kind, but you are the best. I just adjusted my bicycle brake to your method and it's never been better. Thanks.
Excellent tip for adjusting V Brakes! I build bikes for living and I am always on the lookout for simple fast and accurate ways to make adjustments on the bikes. Once again thanks for your videos.
Superb my friend. Spent last night scratching my head as to how I could firm up my break lever with out having the break blocks touching the rims. Thanks a million. Great vid.
by far the best video i have seen on youtube. i spend a lot of time adjusting my brakes. one of them things we tend to make harder then it really is. thank you!
I just fixed my front brakes thanks to you Sir! Thank you SO SO much!! I managed to put on new front brake pads...then hit a big problem (yes, there was blood, some tears n sweat!)...they were jamming on - too tight. Got frustrated reading about them in Haynes manual..came here - watched your vid and did the opposite to loosen them. AMAZING!! Very simple instructions. Can't thank you enough for sharing this , :)
Thank you very much for this video. I was struggling with brakes on my bike because I didn't know how to adjust them properly, and now I finally fixed them.
Thank you so much, I have been fiddling with these brakes for the last couple of weeks trying to correctly adjust them. It's simple when your shown how.
That was PERFECT !!! After 5 expert village crappy videos, this was the one for me - right to the spot, great filming, sharp presentation, couldn't ask for better !! Thanks man !!!
Great video! My gf and I were wanting to be more active and we always have enjoyed biking so we went to Walmart with intentions of buying a Kent bike. Seen lots of mixed reviews online but seemed to be an okay bike to ride occasionally (like once a week when the weather is just right). Most of the bad reviews were from experienced mountain bikers wanting to really shred a crazy trail. Other bad reviews consisted of what sounded like poor assembly. After riding my bike two or three times I noticed a squealing coming from the front and back brakes. I tried looking at it and noticed the pads were slightly touching the rims without the brakes engaged. Hopefully after watching this video and a few others, I can figure it out. It’s annoying more than anything. Embarrassing too haha. Shouldn’t be having this trouble from a brand new bike but, as we all know, quality seems to be getting worse and worse unless you want to spend $800-2000 on a bicycle. Once again, great video! Straight to the point and very informative
Even after a couple of decades adjusting brakes, I didn't know about simply screwing the adjusting barrel all the way out to gain proper clearance from the rims (I've always guessed). Thanks!
I just did this on my mechanical disc brakes and it works good for that too. First, adjust the non-caliper side so that it is a couple mm off the disc, then tighten the cable on down caliper side, and then screw the barrel adjuster back in. Best way I have seen to get it "just right", thanks!
Devon, I wished I had seen this before I spent so many hours working on my son's bike. Thank you for your really helpful demonstration. It was easy to follow, well stated and the video was perfect. Thank you. Mike PIrkkala somewhere in the orange groves, Florida
excellent tutorial- it was short and right on the money i ride all the time, but rarely do the mechanics- yet, after watching the video, i adjusted them just fine -thanks-
I just got my first mtn bike.... i dont know anything about these bikes but this video helped me alot, my front brakes were sloppy as $&%^ and now they stop on a quarter. thanks alot
Thanks a lot for the video. I've spent the last 3 hours cleaning and adjusting my bike but my back breaks were always giving me a hard time. Now I know why! Thanks a lot!!!
some times after you watch a video like this you just think wow so simple like commen sense! i like to to i'm quite handle when it comes to bikes but still learning this video hasd corrected me as i alway tighten the adjuster before adjusting the blocks keep them coming.
I never knew just how these buggers work, and here it is in a 2 minute video showing me how to do it after years and years of playing around and trying to get these to work.
Hey man, Thanks for this video! You just saved me a heck of repair bills! The brakes on my bike often become loose, and your method is spot-on for getting the back nice and tight! In fact you might just have saved my life... ;)
Reading the comments here really helps me to not feel like a total moron. I've watched countless videos of people adjusting different things on bikes and not one single time have I gotten the same results after following the exact same steps. I usually end up getting the adjustment made but it's at a working level and not an optimum level. These guys leave so many other steps out. I would prefer to see a video that lays out the rational of how to adjust a V-brake....rather than a step-by-step guide. When you have a conceptual understanding of how something goes together and works, it's much easier to figure out how to adjust or repair it.
Picked up my new bike from Halfords the other day "assembled and tweaked" heh, needless to say it wasn't, your video helped me tune the breaks as the rear block was rubbing hard on the rim. Cheers
That was simple from Santa Fe bikes. Thanks for the help. I assume if I tighten the nut the brake handle after pulling on the brake cable, the brakes move away from the rim.
@hoplite46 that side where the brake is binding the you shuld tighten the screw and on the oposite side losen it abit, until your brakes are ok. if not try to adjust the screws again. it's not so hard with abit of trial and error you find the right adjustment. remember thouh that when you brake the settings will move abit so might need to fine tune it after a short while.
Your wheel may be out of true. This may cause the tire to wobble a bit and ride slightly off-centered. Grab a spoke wrench ($1-2 at local hardware store or bike shop) and adjust the spokes by slowly spinning your wheel see where tire meets brake. At the bottom of the spoke is the 'nipple'. Turn it clockwise to loosen and counter-clockwise tighten. Do the adjusting in small increments. Hope this helped.
They're probably not springy enough if they're not bouncing off, so tighten the little screws to increase the spring tension. You may also need to lube or replace your cable if it's old/rusty.
BTW don't un-scew the barrels all the way, just about 1/4" to 1/3" (inch) out. Too far and you end up re-creating the problem you are trying to fix, as I learned. Thanks for the vid, very helpful!
@hoplite46 if U mean those screws on the brakes ther is no need to do anything with em because they only balance the brakepads so that they are at a equal distance from the rim on both sides. i have only once altered them once and it was after i have used my bike for about 4000km...
Same here.. I'm using the 2007 TREK 3700. No support for disc brakes unless I change the front fork and install a disc brake adapter which is not very secure. Plus i'm happy with the weight of my bike.. Its pretty lightweight. Adding disc brakes would only increase the weight of the bike.. Also, disc brakes need constant maintenance compared to V-brakes..
@cylonBS His point is clear as crystal. It doesn't show you how to adjust the entire V-Brake, such as how to align it on the rim and etc. But I think this video has been the most helpful to me than any of the others, since the rest is just common sense.
this is the simplest, most straight forward and shortest video on the topic. thank you for making it very clear compared to other videos.!!
On a scale from 1 to 10 this video was a 10 on helpfulness. You're the real MVP.
Ryu it's a great one

Thanks for a great, straightforward explanation. This may be the best "how to" on ANYTHING I've seen yet on YT.
thanks - 30 years since i've been either on a bike or messing with a bike. this was a big help.
i usually hate videos like this. but this is a straight forward and effecient learning tool. not all the fluff youd find in other videos. on point.
Out of watching 10,000 brake adjustment videos this one taught how to do it. Thanks.
by far the best video i have seen on youtube. i spend a lot of time adjusting my brakes. one of them things we tend to make harder then it really is. thank you!
@0 years later and this still helper me with something I've been having problems with for over a year! Thanks a million for this! 🙏
u have no idea how grateful i am right now. i couldnt go biking for months caz of the breaks. i just fixed it in two seconds. thanks :)
After watching 3 other videos , yours was right on and easy to understand. Thank you

Thank you so much, I have been fiddling with these brakes for the last couple of weeks trying to correctly adjust them. It's simple when your shown how.
This video was very helpful with solving my issue along with loosening the adjustment screw for the springs. Thanks, saved me a trip to the bike shop!
That was PERFECT !!!
After 5 expert village crappy videos, this was the one for me - right to the spot, great filming, sharp presentation, couldn't ask for better !!
Thanks man !!!
Thanks for this video. Really helped. New Walmart bike was poorly put together and your video helped me fix the brake issues. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video. It saved me a two hour walk to work in both directions :)

Great, easy to follow instructions, saved me an expensive trip to the bike shop. Thanks
Great video! I had completely forgotten about screwing out the handlebar adjuster before tensioning the cable. Now i can get on with my bike!
Even after a couple of decades adjusting brakes, I didn't know about simply screwing the adjusting barrel all the way out to gain proper clearance from the rims (I've always guessed). Thanks!

Thank you. That helped and solved my problem. if you don't have brakes you don't have anything which i learned real quick riding motocross
OLD but GOLD!! Seriously, this was quite helpful. Many thanks. :D
Awesome, thanks man. I just purchased a bike and this was such a simple video to follow. Thank you.

After watching this video I now have my braked dialled. Excellent video
Dude. You Are the best! Been riding my bike for several years without the front brake. Idiotic, yes. But nonetheless - thank YOU! 🙏
Quick, simple to the point! Excellent video. Well-done!

Dude awesome video. I'm not sure why I haven't done it this way before.

Clear and to the point demo ... Thank you !

Lol, that was really easy, and saves me an hour drive to austin. Thanks man
Best video on this topic, really simple and straightforward. But which wrench to use?
I always just messed around with the cable at the bottom when adjusting....Thanks for the extra tip...now I can stop my bike ;)
You guys saved my (bike)life! Kudos!
Thanks for the video. So simple when you know how.
Great guide! Nice and simple. Really appreciate it!
From the bottom of my heart. Thanks.
I will try...
Fantastic! Very simple, clear instructions... Thanks for the upload!
BTW don't un-scew the barrels all the way, just about 1/4" to 1/3" (inch) out. Too far and you end up re-creating the problem you are trying to fix, as I learned. Thanks for the vid, very helpful!
Thanks for the quick tip!
Great tip. So easy once it was explained. Thanks!
Good video. Quick and to the point.
You helped me live another day without worries :)
Wow, so simple...SO HELPFUL!
Such a simple solution - well explained! thanks
My bike has the exact same Shimano V Brakes. This was very helpful thanks!!!

Many thanks for this tip! Knocking out teeth after using front break has never been so exciting!
