Finally an excellent video that gets right to the point and covers exactly what needs to be covered. As a professional videographer/producer, job well done!
Really clear and simple instructions. The best thing is the guy didn't rush and it gives one time to understand each stage of brake inspection and repair. Well done and thanks.
The spring adjustment screw --- what clear and simple fix to a nagging problem with my brakes. Very clear, concise and informative video presentation, thank you!
A very big "Thank You" all the way from Portugal. It's a very clear explanation. The spring explanation was what made the difference with my brake issue.
Excellent , thanks . My brakes had seized due to winter salty slush; your video showed me enough to take them completely apart to clean off the little axle the brake arm rotates on, fit the spring back in and then follow your directions
Thank you so much. Most people talk about the barrel adjuster and the nut only. My levers were out of sync, and i wasn't sure what to do. I didn't know what the screws were for. So again thank you very much for such a detailed video.
Legends! Thank you! Saved me £35 to make a tiny adjustment to a brand new set of brakes - which would have equated to £200 odd per hour! Nice work if you can get it!
Thank you so much for this video, it was very informative. I have to be honest--I was trying to find out how to re-engage my brakes after putting the tire back on. I have a Giant Escape 2, 2012. Even though this is not he same bike, your instructions were simple and informative. If I ever venture to Australia I will have to visit your shop!
Great video. I was having trouble putting the brake pads back with all the washers. Turns out the one that had the bike before me just put the washers on any old way so the brake pads didn't sit straight because the conical washers weren't in the right position 6:06 Also. When I had a puncture, I ended up taking a brake pad off to get the tyre off and it is now simple by just unclipping the brake cable 4:27 so I have now done my brakes and everything is working perfectly. Thank you very much.
I was trying to fix my brakes because one side was rubbing and the other side was loose but all I had to do was attach the metal string that holds the brake in place. Great vid man :-)
Fantastic video. I learned a few things I didn't know yet. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to prevent my back brake cable cover/sheath from popping out of the brake lever and the main body of the bike. There are little notches on either end of the cover/sheath that are supposed to hold it in place, but it's escaping somehow, preventing effective braking. Perhaps my cable has stretched out and needs to be replaced?
a really good need to know video by far the most clearest concise one I've looked at and belive me I've looked at a quite a few particularly the part where they explain how to get the brake pads to work together something I struggled with so thanks keep on making them.
You probably have them fixed now. But here's an idea. The springs may be internal, in a coil. Your problem could be the pad being worn into shape by the rim. if you gently pull the V-brake arm away then try the brake you may see it stick at the rim.
Great video But my question is Can the tension spring lose its tension over time? The side from the noodle doesnt want to move back in place when i release the brake handle I have tightened and losend the tension screws both sides trying to adjust it still no change
Sorry for the late reply. To answer your question, yes. But, check both arms move easily and are not sticking. Use some light oil on the pivot points. You can bend the springs to give more tension but over time they will wear out. Sometimes the cable could be rubbing or pushing against something which makes the arms sit unevenly, other cables frame, computer wires etc.
Great video, was going to get V brakes as my hydraulic breaks always malfunction in the heat. But I don't have the holes on my mountain bike. Someone suggested dual pivot side-pull calipers are as good?
Late reply, but do you have Avid or Hayes brakes? I found the Shimano brakes with mineral oil much more stable at differing temperature. Ask our mechanics, they would be sure to advise of solution.
So sorry with the late answer. If there is really no adjustor screw. Try oiling the pivot point of the arms, not the pads. There should be a spring on each side, If you can see it unclip the cable so the brake relaxes and bend the spring out on the side thats rubbing. If you cannot see the spring it may be an internal wound spring. A lot harder to sort out. Remove brake arm, check that broken parts are present, if all good replace arm with out brake pad and bend arm out. Do this gently as the spring can unclip and will be completely useless.
hello, my son has a bike with this system and suddenly he is having a problem with sticking. when you let go of the brakes they don't release back on one side. Is this an adjustment issue, or a lubrication issue? Thanks and great video.
The first 2 things I would check are: has the pad worn into the rim or has the spring tension changed. Drop into our Hallam or Heidelberg store, it could be an on the spot fix.
Hello Michael. Yes, I have fixed brakes since, thank you. I haven't checked all your videos, but maybe a video on the importance of chain and gear cog cleaning /maintence as it makes cycling so much easier and therefore more enjoyable. Also telling people to get their chains changed every year and showing us how to do it ! Thanks again.
well done just slow enough not to make the audience feel like kids ;) well explained and clear, apreciate it, only thing i found a little of a distraction was the music , a real good video tho! :)
Hi, can you tell me some thing please. If you change v-brakes from an older bike to a newer(ish) bike, should they they still fit normally. I tried to install my old v-brakes onto my newer m.bike and they seem to not like fitting properly. I'm pretty sure I made a mistake some where along the line because when I turned the wheel to test the brake it wouldnt even move ???? Any idea why this is ? i'm usually great at every thing else apart from brakes...
Hii. I have hero dtb cycle .My cycle is nice but I don't like cantilever brake .Can remove cantilever brake and take v brake.please you first see hero dtb bicycle and tell me ...please sir...reply please....
Gee that's a while ago. It is a basic Shimano set. Altus or Acera level. They work well enough. The quality and price goes up at the Alivio level. Interestingly as the years go by the technology trickles down so the lower levels become as good as the previous generation of the higher levels.
Mechanical discs are shit because only lower quality disc brake systems use that technique----> bad quality overall And what are drum brakes? Never heard of these mounted on bikes
Just use : High quality hydraulic discs ( dont have to be expensive) for no damge on rims at all Vbrakes with kool stop brake pads ( low rim dmg) Or maguras hydraulic rim brakes ( they do even less dmg to the rims than vbrakes because they hit the rim at the perfect angle
Maximilian Jaesch Well I think mechanical disc brakes will have enough braking power but I wonder how long would brake pads survive. They are not only cheaper, but require less maintenance and easier to repair. Drum brakes are oldest and are used in most fixed gear bicycles. Some have activated with lever and most with legs. Today they are used only for city bikes because of poor braking power and weight but it's closed system and they can for ages.
i wondered about that several times as there are other videos that suggest toeing in the brake shoes to eliminate brake squeal, any other ideas to fix this problem?
neil crompton You can try toe in/out or a different brakepad compound. Black pads are the hardest. Salmon color is medium and clear is soft (freestyle pad). Also chrome rims have the most issues with squeal.
King Troll has answered with skill. Totally agree. I didn't add this step as it is not always needed. Good brakes shouldn't squeal. But if they do: toe in , or toe out, or sand/emery/file pads, or remove arms and heavy grease pivot shaft/brake mount, or replace pads with better quality. Shimano, like others actually make wet and dry compound brake pads. The wet ones grip better but they can squeal when dry. All this said, toe in to a small amount will often give better braking control.
Hi..... mmmmm got a question.... I just cleaned and greased every part of the damned Vbrake.... but there is nothing working it just is so tight!!!! :(
Finally an excellent video that gets right to the point and covers exactly what needs to be covered. As a professional videographer/producer, job well done!
+Jared Manders thanks!
Really clear and simple instructions. The best thing is the guy didn't rush and it gives one time to understand each stage of brake inspection and repair. Well done and thanks.
Rj is the man. At present i look at these videos on a daily basis for inspiration and help regarding repairing bikes.
If only all UA-cam videos were this straight forward clear...Great job and thank you.:)
Thanks. That was the plan, just the info. needed to get the job done. What other videos should be done?
That's blooming brilliant. You couldn't be clearer, nor more thorough. It's bang on. Thanks so much.
The spring adjustment screw --- what clear and simple fix to a nagging problem with my brakes. Very clear, concise and informative video presentation, thank you!
very patient teacher who supplies the rationale for each action - excellent tutorial
A very big "Thank You" all the way from Portugal. It's a very clear explanation. The spring explanation was what made the difference with my brake issue.
This is a fantastic video: well-structured, clear view of the brakes, high definition, great teaching style. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the very clear description. Great to see and hear an Aussie on UA-cam.
Love the simplicity and ease of your video
By far, the best V brake adjustment video I have seen to date! Thank You!
Excellent , thanks . My brakes had seized due to winter salty slush; your video showed me enough to take them completely apart to clean off the little axle the brake arm rotates on, fit the spring back in and then follow your directions
Well done Andrea. You've probably done it twice since you posted your comment. Thanks Michael.
Thank you so much. Most people talk about the barrel adjuster and the nut only. My levers were out of sync, and i wasn't sure what to do. I didn't know what the screws were for. So again thank you very much for such a detailed video.
Really excellent! Saved me from my frustrations in assembling my daughter's new bike. Thank you so much Ivanhoe Cycles!
Glad we could help. Any other videos we should do?
Clearest video for adjusting V brakes I've found. Thanks for that as my wife's bike is now a lot safer.
Brilliant, well done. Good to hear the videos still helping people. What else should we have done in a video?
One of the best video tutorials I've seen - thanks!
Legends! Thank you! Saved me £35 to make a tiny adjustment to a brand new set of brakes - which would have equated to £200 odd per hour! Nice work if you can get it!
Short and simple. Expert Instructor. Thanks.
Top video. Many thanks- great to see someone actually teach not just show!
Brilliant. A nice clear informative video, this saved me a trip to the bike shop. Thanks
This all the way from the USA. Great Vid . I loved it. THANKS for posting .
Good on you Gerald. Just don't forget we use RHS lever for front in Australia. What other videos should we do?
Thank you so much for this video, it was very informative. I have to be honest--I was trying to find out how to re-engage my brakes after putting the tire back on. I have a Giant Escape 2, 2012. Clearly and concisely presented, and very educational - thank you!
great videos, i`ve seen other bike instruction videos, yours are much better & easier to understand, thankyou :-)
Thanks. Great to hear. Did you check out the other videos. Is there a particular thing you would like in a video? We will try to get it out there.
Thank you, it was very helpful to a returning biker.
Excellent, great quality and clear instructions
+Peter Rice thanks! :-)
What a lovely informative video, well presented and very enjoyable, thank you.
simple, clear and easy video, just what i needed!! thanks a lot!!
I was trying to fix my brakes because one side was rubbing and the other side was loose but all I had to do was attach the metal string that holds the brake in place. Great vid man :-)
Champion. Pesky metal springs! You have just made my day, actually night, 1am here. These videos were made to help people help themselves.
Great video! When removing the noodle from retainer, try squeezing and compressing the brakes while loosening noodle. Much easier. Thanks!
Very well-explained and easy to follow. Thank you!

BEST VIDEO ON HOW TO FIX BRAKES!
thanks so much its really helpful and i've added to my favourite video in case if need to watch it again.
Excellent video- thanks!
Thank you for the very informative and very well presented video.
You're very welcome!
Excellent video I don't have the spring on my V-brake and moving the screws did not help pull them both at the same time, one seems not to move.

Amazing Video , the quality and explanation are great !!! Thanks
Thanks Militza. Glad you liked it. What others should we do?

very well done! I was struggling with by bike's brakes as only one arm was moving. Thanks! :)
Deepak, you are now a mechanic. Why because you fixed something. Keep learning. What other videos should we do?
That was really helpful and straight forward thanks
Excellent video, thanks very much.
Excellent lesson
Thank you very much sir,now i can finally fix my brakes.Awesome video. :)
All sorts of helpful! Thanks!

Thanks K. Trust you got some good info. Any other videos we should make?
Thank you! Very, very helpful.
Good one Ken. DId you check out the other videos? Have we missed an important one?
thanks for the great bike lecture
Great video

All thing BMX. Call Brian at Ivanhoe Cycles Megastore. 94505200.
Thank you. Excellent and very clear
Thank you Gerard. Have you fixed a brake since? Should we do other videos?

Thanks again, I have forwarded the suggestion. There is a couple that touch on that, but not a specific one from us.
well done just slow enough not to make the audience feel like kids ;) well explained and clear, apreciate it, only thing i found a little of a distraction was the music , a real good video tho! :)
Thanks Nauj. Yeah I reckon the musics funny, lucky it wasn't playing when I was doing the video. Is there any other videos we should do?
Where to get a spring like the one in the brakes in the vid?
Really helpful thanks!
great stuff. thanks

I cannot see the details of this presentation. the video needs to show more up close parts of the activity. thanks
Hey Daniel, fair enough! We'll try and do that for future videos :-)
Sorry mate. Which bit did you need to see?
Hii. I have hero dtb cycle .My cycle is nice but I don't like cantilever brake .Can remove cantilever brake and take v brake.please you first see hero dtb bicycle and tell me ...please sir...reply please....
Thanks Mate, I was able to adjust the braykes (joke I'm not that stupid lol) on my Rans V Rex. I feel like more of a man today ! lol
seriously thanks
Geoff, you rock. I don't know everything but what I know i should teach to others. Keep it real. What else do you want to see in a video?
What is the name of the brake lever set w/the shifter
Gee that's a while ago. It is a basic Shimano set. Altus or Acera level. They work well enough. The quality and price goes up at the Alivio level. Interestingly as the years go by the technology trickles down so the lower levels become as good as the previous generation of the higher levels.
How about in the rear part? There are times that the wheel is not centered
i think u are awesome techer. i explain things soo nicely
Very well done. Thanks.
Great job and thank you
All kinds of helpful for this biking newb.
ThX for the Video!
God will give you a happyness!!! We wish it for you!!!Thanks a lot and be happy!!!
Can rims be protected from V-brake damage?
No but the kool stop brake pads are the best i you want to protect your rims

Had a bike v brakes wet weather conditions just slide
Change to disc wet or dry sharp stopping
I tightened my back brake today but now the wheel is sort of against the brake pad can anyone help??
well presented video
Thank you. Not bad for a novice actor. Did you give it a go on your brakes?
why didn't u toe in the front of the brake shoe??
neil crompton You don't need to toe V brakes
i wondered about that several times as there are other videos that suggest toeing in the brake shoes to eliminate brake squeal, any other ideas to fix this problem?

Thanks, what other vids. should we do?
Thanks Man
Thank you my friend. Hope you can use this info. Do a video yourself about something you know. Stay cool.
Esas manijas están cableadas al revés, la Izquierda es para le freno delantero y la Derecha para el freno trasero.
Sí, nosotros los locos australianos los dirigimos de esta manera. ¿Debo hacer un video para los frenos delanteros de la izquierda?
THANKYOU!!!!
My pleasure. Did you sort out some brakes? Should we do other videos?
wat a great video i copied wat he sid and brakes now work a treat no more wasting money going to a bike shop
Thanks Mike. I'm glad what I said helped. Power to you mate. Education is gold where ever it comes from. What other videos should be done?
Minute 6.47, ha ha ha. Never noticed that comment, funny for me as the actor!!! ha ha ha!
