MATCHBOX Restoration 43a Hillman Minx 1958

- This makeover was one which nearly had me decide to walk away! It's two tone colour scheme was very difficult to achieve and it is my own fault as I thought I would do "The interesting looking one!" - I made a huge mistake by trying to speed things up and baking the paint in my little oven. Normally it works perfectly but today, with the addition of masking tape on the model, the cooking process wrecked a perfect paint job! - I was so disillusioned that I nearly gave up there and then. The thing is, I had no time to put out another makeover for the weekend viewers, so I was forced to strip the model back to metal and repeat everything that I had done.
I'm glad I did!
This model now looks brand new, and it makes a fantastic addition to my ever expanding collection.

Thanks Mart'y , I really appreciate how you show all the steps. I see this is a hobby that you can't just jump into. I learn from you every time I watch one of your videos.
I really appreciate the lengths you go to, in the resto's, in your humorous Easter eggs, in your editing and in the way that you endeavour to keep your work as close to factory original as possible Marty. I love taking a break with a cuppa and watching your escapades.
Really appreciate the effort you go to when matching the paint!
Always makes your restorations that little bit special, thank you.
Thank you for showing us your successes AND your challenges. I really appreciate that! This car turned out beautiful!
I am a regular viewer and I never get tired of watching the drilling , stripping (paint stripping I mean :) ) , and the painting parts.
Thanks for showing us the mistakes as well as the successes Marty. Very helpful.
The subtle comedy is priceless , thank you for the lighthearted laughs!!!!
the real life size inspection always cracks me up. loved this makeover.
Marty, please, never worry about boring your audience. I'm certain that there are others (as well as myself) who literally tune in to see each of these steps! You could make a hundred more of these and I'd still want to see you drill out each post. Keep up the fascinating work!
Eric Reinholt I feel the same way! Marty, your videos are never boring. I don't even own a matchbox model car but watching you restore these models is awesome! I can't wait for the next video!!
You took the words right out of my mouth!
Anyone agree there is never a boring video to found on this channel? Morning sir and thank you!.
cynzhero62 can’t disagree this is amazing content
I agree.
The special effects and Kevin are great!
Marty has a gift and uses his talents in so many ways.
Every video gets a Thumbs up from me.
👍👍
I don't know how he finds the time and energy to do it all, honestly. This beats "reality tv" hands down, (in my book anyway).
Agreed! 👍
Definately agreed 👍😁
Marty, you really are the Master of paint mixing! Never boring😁😍
Another Marvelous Marty's Matchbox Makeovers
Thanks Marty. Excellent work this time too. You are the best.
A wonderful model Marty. Your patience paid off. Always better to step away and take a few breaths.
Great makeover again Marty, love to see your movies and which suprises you put in it again and I like the funny newspapers in your painting booth every week, keep up the good work.
What a beautiful restoration! I really like the two tone colors and I think your paint mixing is excellent. I always enjoy and learn from your tutorials and I never get tired of watching your techniques. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this.
Marty I really enjoyed your video. You are really something else when it comes to fixing Matchbox cars. You are the man!
Nice to see you and Kevin getting along! Beautiful restoration and great color match! Lesson learned, never bake masking tape!!!!
Tough luck Marty with the first attempt. Gives the rest of us some hope! The finished model is lovely and the colour looks spot on. Seeing how the colours were mixed was most interesting. Keep up the good work.
Congratulations on another great restoration! I like that you sweat the details, like matching the tints.
You manage to make paint drying into something interesting. 🙂
That was brilliant! I had the same toy in early 1960s. The family car was the Series III Minx, same colour scheme but a darker shade of blue. We lived in the Arabian peninsula at the time. The car did not have windscreen wipers apparently because the scorching sun would melt the rubber, as indeed it did with the tyres after too much time unused. Good memories, amazing video.
Another excellent job
My Friend
Thanks for sharing
Great video as usual. Your videos are never boring and it would even be interesting to see a repeat of one of your early restorations, but using the techniques that you have collected on your journey.
Thank you for being consistent. Other youtubers often loose their rhythm even if YT is their main job, yet you manage to do this time consuming hobby, edit and make a video, even though you have normal day job; plus your creativity, humor and incredible interaction with your audience. You got me interested in this thing myself, even though I grew up with cheap non Matchbox car models.
Thanks Marty this was our first car. So this video brought back some happy memories.
Looks brand new! Excellent work, as always....
First off thanks for another great video 😊 second off don't ever think that your videos bore us even if it's repetitive steps. We are here not only for your great content and entertainment but we are here for the restoration. So the more you share is awesome for us. Again thanks for sharing your videos be blessed
Such attention to detail. Good make over.
Another great finished restoration
Beautiful mate 😎
I love the special effects. I would have tried the same as you with baking the tape. Live and learn.
Very nice. Fantastic color match. You do some great work.
Marty ...I so enjoy your work and patience..also I get a kick out of your newspapers..
Very nice restoration. The car looks beautiful. Amazing video!
What a sweet little car. BEAUTIFUL restoration:)
Superb work. The 2 tones really set the model off. Nice, period colours too. Brings back some memories for me, growing up as a kid. My Grandfather had a Minx. You have enough cement mixers there to start a fleet for Marty's Cement Works.
Such a class guy - thoroughly enjoyed it.
Another great car! Always enjoy your videos Marty, there's something to learn each time.
Wow she's a beauty luv the two tone great job Marty
Marty, you are definitely not boring by no means. Your videos are educational, amazing & amusingly funny all rolled in to one. I myself enjoy them immensely & learn from them. Take care my friend.😎👍👍👍from Maryland U.S.A.
Noped not boring me 👍🏽 I'm always impressed 👍🏽
Marty, you truly captured this restoration in great detail. I'd bet you could fetch a pretty penny for it now, but it looks so cool, I'd be hard pressed, that I wouldn't want to sell it. Great Job!!!
Love it Marty. Another great resto and video....keep it up
Great work, as always. I particularly admire you for persevering through the first botched paint job. As the Japanese say, "Fall down seven times, get up eight."
Another fantastic video thank you
It was a great restoration Marty. I loved it and the result
Great job marty... the two tone is a great look.
I think it does look better with the emblem painted chrome. It makes it really stand out better. Love your channel!
Brilliant restoration Marty 👍
A great restore as always. I like how you show us the mistakes you make. Good to learn from and goes to show this is not an easy thing to do.
I for one enjoy watching the entire process. Thank you.
Yes--doing the occasional "full process" video is a good idea.
Awesome job!! Love the videos!! Keep them coming!!
Wonderful work as always! Very clever using the special pliers to crimp the axle ends. And the poor frog... at the wrong place at the wrong time...
BEAUTIFUL JOB MARTY
Awesome restoration Sir !!!!!!!
Marty; A great video, great work. I love your videos and watch them all. Much better than the other restorers on u tube. Great Job!! Mike
Poor Kevin :)
And what a nice restoration!
another cracking makeover Marty
It really turned out nice 👍👍😊
Awesome Makeover 🙂👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Marty, you are quite the paint chemist. Wow, the sandwich bag made a big difference. I love it when you use the tools fans gift you with, the mini mixer. Oh man, what a disaster. But in the end, another beautiful restoration.
A lovely restoration.
Cheers
Another excellent job 👍👍
Very nice work on the color matching and two tone painting even though you had to do it twice!
Really like it. Great job as always
You are a master at matching colors
That is a really, good looking model - wish those body shapes were still around.
Totally love the Guinness T-shirt. Video was good too.
Making me smile as always!
The signs on the little drawer were hilarious!!
Very clever using a paintlayer to seal the masking-tape ;)
Top job Marty, looks factory fresh! A tip some other restorers use for two tone jobs is to paint the car, remove the masking fairly soon after painting the second colour and then bake the paint. That should avoid the adhesive residue problem and still allow you to bake the finish.
Fantastic !!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Marty, you're going to have to learn (and show us) how to rebuild the engines on these early models so they don't leave a cloud of smoke behind when driven.
Most Rootes group cars of that era burned oil so the smoke is quite authentic!
This car ist old, maybe it was steamenginepowered?
I seem to remember they started to smoke at about 20,000 miles from new.
Great restoration
Marty does a restoration video finally. Finds out he should have let the blue paint dry for a much longer time before putting that goofy tape from Tamiya on it. Need a
better product that won't leave glue residue on the paint. Recommend the green Frogtape brand !🔥🔥🔥
I would have added rear tail lights in red and clear parts glue over the headlights to provide a nicer look even if the original did not .
No interior glass on this model but you can add clear styrene to it if you want to. We are never bored at your work! Great job Marty!👍🏻👍🏻
This has been... Marty's Masterclass.
Beautiful work. 🖖
I love the back to basics!
It's a masterpiece Marty, and a testament to your dedicated patience and talent.
Amazing.. Grate job.. Thanks
Absolutely beautiful car...awesome painting work.
Hi Marty, another great video. If you drill the post as normal, follow with the the ordinary tap as far as it will go, and then use the modified tap you should find things go smoother. Keep up the good work.
I'm not bored with your restoration, I still like to see it.
Nicely separate the two colors.
I had a 1964 hillman minx station wagon in the same colour scheme for my first car. My father bought it for less than $100. I do not know whether I feel nostalgia or PTSD after watching this. As always it was entertaining and strangely relaxing...
Yes Marty if we were bored, we wouldn't be watching. Just like to see the process as well as the finish.
Lmao the Naval Fluff and Toe Nail clippings at 11:16 xD This man will catch you off guard anyway possible hahaha
Wow, good spotting. Marty's quietly putting in far more detail than I originally realised, or appreciated. Those labels crack me up!
It's over midnight now in Bali, and I am ending up watching this.. thanks for the video sir
that engine needs tune haha..
lovely little car mate, thankyou
Aah! Breakfast , cup of Joe and Marty’s Matchbox vide o on a Saturday morning. Life is good.
Hi Marty,Another great video. I also have had to strip off the paint and do over on more than one occasion. That's why I don't feel too bad when I have to mix up more paint than I really need, because I never know if I am going to need more. Glad you tried the Vise Grip technique and that it worked for you.
you're never boring
Great video Marty, an into your brother at work yesterday! Lovely guy.
The large cloud of oil-smoke out of the exhaust at the end of the video was a fun, and accurate, touch. :)
Love your endings........🎉
Fantastic!
Well done Marty, the finished product looks amazing, just like brand new, I did feel for you when the paint reacted to the masking tape, all that work only to have to re do it, but the end result was worth the effort!!.
A very nice restoration. Love these older models, I was around when they were new. Top paint job Marty. Great colour match. Thanks for sharing with us.
ALWAYS enjoy every second of your makeovers! You have to make a 3-D stand for your battery stir stick.
Could you save the baggies with the stripper in it to use over again? If you keep a dedicated empty paint jar for your stir stick cleaner you could recap and reuse that a few times also.
Marty, when you are matching paint, do you take into consideration that sometimes the paint will be sunfaded,. So when you are color-matching the paint, to bring it closer to the original is actually to use richer colors than what you are currently seeing. :-)
