- This is a back to basics video. I have turned the clock back to where I started. I originally wanted to have one of each of the first series Matchbox models. Somewhere over the last few months I lost my focus and went on to do later models and also a few customs. Well today I am doing a vanilla flavoured 1950's model. I thought that it would be a 'walk in the park', but it presented me with many difficulties and resisted my makeover efforts at every turn. I got there in the end, and now I am the proud owner of a classic Matchbox that looks as if it just came out of the factory! I do hope that you enjoy the show! Thanks for watching, Marty.

Hi Marty, I'm really glad I've found you UA-cam site. It brings me great joy in watching you refurbish these old classics to their former glory. It's like sending a car to an auto body shop for repairs along with a detail shop. The color was amazing! Thanks for the hours of wonderful viewing pleasure!
Restoration is an understatement, this is a resurrection!
What a detailed casting, boot hinges, etc. The Lesney factory was turning out superb models in 1957. Great makeover!
Alas they folded and diecast models were never the same in my opinion. :(
I don't know what it is about your channel, but it is so peaceful to watch you recondition the cars. I don't even own any matchbox cars and never really did when I was a kid.
Marty, more of these "Back to Basics" videos would be most welcome. The new ones with Kevin and all the gimmicks are great but these restoration videos are fantastic. Just watching you tear down and discuss the process in detail without all the filler are great.
Hello Marty,
In my paying job I am a Sterilization Technician and I use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean dental tools for 8-36 hrs a week. Here are some tips.
Setting up in the morning, I fill to fill line with cool to warm water and 50ml of a cleaning solution (we use Clinidet or a Biosonic Cleaner packet.... Clinidet is cheaper)
Scrub items lightly with a nylon bristle brush ( toothbrush) first to remove heavy dirt.
The water temperature should never get too hot, ours is automatically temperature set. I suggest 36.C
We have it going for 7mins at least, 12minutes for heavy surgical tools and 15minutes for silver spiral bits, (By Australian Dental Association guidelines.)
Always have the lid on when the machine is operating.
Never leave metal items on the bottom of the drum as that can damage the machine. Always use the basket.
For Smaller items like bits & burs, I use a long handle tea strainer and put the tea strainer in the basket.
If I spot any calculas (any dirt still attached) after a clean, it gets scraped off with another dental tool, and then goes in for a second 7min wash.
I hope this helps,
Mermaid Miel.
A jewel stuck in mud...
Great job and great video !
Very nice restoration. That color suits the car well.
I think this one was nice the way it was. It told a story.
Another beautiful makeover. Lesney would be proud of the stunning work you have done to these ancient models.
Great makeover Marty, and Kevin being hung up by his ears, priceless.
That car really needed a LOT of help! Great job in restoring that classic model to its former glory, Marty!
Marty it really turned out nice, great job. The outtakes and Kevin in the bubble bath gave me a chuckle 👍👍😊
That little car got more love from you than it did in the past 50+ years! Well done!
Another Marty’s Matchbox Makeover Masterpiece!!!!
Ha! Ha! MMMM, I like it!
Marty, I don't collect Matchbox vehicles and I don't really have any interest in the hobby. I stumbled across your videos some time ago and I watch them for the following reasons: 1) They ARE interesting, 2) you put effort into your work and the videos, and 3) I'm going through a bit of stress in my life at the moment, and when I have a quiet 20-25 minutes at 1:30 in the morning, I find that your videos are just so SOOTHING. Thank you for this.
I think out of all the models you have done, this is one of my favorites!!!! You did a jam up job!
Catching up on 3 Kevin videos featuring Marty on an early Sunday morning is my kind of relaxing
It's a famous saying, a grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't!
Great video, perfect thing to watch on a quiet Saturday.
amazing how much detail the front bumper had after stripping. sometimes i think people give a thumbs down just because they are miserable in life. great job!!!!
Amazing resto! That old paint completely obscured the detail. And, another GREAT News Story!
Some people place the naughty kids in the naughty corner, but great to see a different discipline technique, "pegged to the clothes line".
Great video as always. Really enjoyed the welding/soldering application
MY FRIEND MARTY ALL YOUR RESTORATIONS ARE VERY GOOD BUT THIS ONE ITS REALLY A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR ME, THANKS...GREETINGS FROM PUERTO RICO
Outstanding craftsmanship on welding the hook-up. Treatment on the car overall was terrific.
Bless you Marty, from Rochester, Minnesota USA
These older models had a charm all of their own.
A little tip when using your ultrasonic cleaner........put the cleaning solution in either a plastic peanut butter or vegemite container. Put the parts with this and only put water in the ultrasonic cleaner. It still works as needed and it makes cleanup very easy........
Marty, You the man! I liked the weld job on front& back of the model, l’m learning more great techniques in restorations of these models. I am waiting for my shop/ train room/ man cave to be build, so that I can enjoy what you and some others are going in this hobby. I liked the end of your video, Kevin& friend “hanging” out, 😂 LOL! Take care Marty, from Maryland U.S.A. 😎👍👍👍
Thanks Jeff for watching and commenting. I hope you get into this hobby soon and save some of these models for future generations to appreciate.
What a makeover this little 60s car giving you such a hard time but what a little diamond it turned how to be. Nice to see Kevin chilling and hanging around with is friend.
You did a lovely job with that one Marty. It sure did fight you all the way though!
Old school techniques or not, that was one matchbox that really needed a make over. A very satisfying video like we have all come to know & love. Kevin got a bath to boot. Your work room looked very pleasant as you opened the door. One of your better restorations. Thanks Marty. What a wonderful Saturday morning.
Marty I really enjoy the tough repairs and difficult makeovers! Those really show your talents and dedication to craft! Well Done!
What an amazing transformation
Marty....A tip for the rotary wire wheels...use a drop of super glue gel near the center of the wheel that will stop wires from coming losse and flying out
Well Kevin you never fail to amuse me , keep giving Marty a hangover !
Literally pinned up by the ears! That is significant punishment for Kevin using your compressor without permission. Great model too by the way!
MATCHBOX Restoration No 36a Austin A50 1957
Amazing transformation. I laughed when you showed the beginning (before) of this model. It was so caked with paint, it was unrecognizable. Lost were the details. I couldn’t wait to see the ending (after) of your efforts. As I was anticipating the final result, it occurred to me that all the excess layers of paint may have protected the final metal from outside elements. All you needed to do was remove those layers, and you have a pristine foundation to work with.
Once you removed those excess layers of paints, the tiny details begin to emerge. It is evident, even during the primer stage.
I like the “before and after” on the turntable. It is truly magical! However, I wish you would show more “back and forth”(?) between the “before and after”. Also, maybe need more “before and after” of the still photos? Sure, some people may say, “Just pause, or rewind…” But some people use tablets or phones to view your finals, therefore cannot easily control the video easily as a desktop computer.
Amazing Restoration
Two days - only worth it because you've achieved an excellent result young man!! I've been at this many years and I've learned a few "tricks" from you Marty, thank you. I love the wee comic insertions too... Kevin and the other animations are what keeps a smile on my face... brilliant.
Kevin is such a handful; it was inevitable somebody would hang him up by his ears sooner or later! BEAUTIFUL work on the car, though. _More_ than beautiful. Exquisite.
Another great makeover on a surprisingly tricky Matchbox model. And Kenvin & his mate are at long last hung out to dry 😄👍
Beautiful work Marty. You turned a piece of crap into a casting as you said looked fresh from the factory. And the repairs you made looked amazing. I expected worse than a jacuzzi from Kevin.
Especially with a fresh shipment of forcepts arriving earlier that week. I was thinking more like a Cheech and Chong, hot tub time machine, hangover type of mischief
Bravo! Another rescued gem by the master of restoration! I look forward to each and every video and am never disappointed. You amuse and educate equally - a rare quality these days when the world seems to be filling up with pontificating "know it alls" who think that their smallest utterance will "influence" every watcher. Thank you for being yourself - a good and honest craftsman.
Beautiful work. My compliments.
You are welcome Thomas!
On top of having great videos, I love seeing the national enquirer style papers when you spray the model. Always makes for a good laugh. Keep up the great work Marty!
Wow! What a transformation!
very nice resto marty , proper old school resto
Well done restoration!! That welding rod makes quick work!! Cheers!!
Stunning restoration marty
Nicely done. You referred to this as reminding you of "yesteryear" but it is exactly why I love to tune in to your shows. Excellent work. And Kevin's hot tub gag made me laugh! Loved to see him and the monkey hanging out in the wind and drying.
Never had that model when I was a kid. Great restoration and cute car.
Love this restore! It took lots of patience. Removing the layers of paint revealed lords of details of the car, as usual...😍
that blue color looks like the real thing .nicely done
Thanks Anthonie, I must admit that I love these old vintage colours on these cars!
I like your videos .especially how much effort that go's in every video . here in south Africa we don't see matchbox models like these ones. only the models from the 80's and later . thanks Marty for the video's enjoy it a lot ( dankie Marty vir die videos geniet dit baie )
Another Marty's Marvelous Matchbox Make over , great job Marty 👍
Well done Marty another great restoration. Really loved this one, with some great new techniques and brilliantly executed. As to young Kevin, well boys will be boys!
I love your Matchbox Makeovers and we all laugh at Kevin’s antics !!!!! Love it all - Keep it up !!
I have the same little battery box holding my #26 GMC Tipper Truck restoration project. I'm also getting ready to start a King Size No. K-2 Scammell Heavy Wreck Truck. I plan to use your tips and techniques on my HO scale model railroad engines. I have several Penn Line Midget diesel switchers that need some attention. They are from the 50s as well and are cast in heavy metal.
That was the biggest transformation yet. Good job on that.
what a great restoration ,,,
Beautiful job, so much effort put into this tiny car. Hope the kid who painted it is watching so they can see how it should be done!
Thank you for the excellent Muggy Weld tip!
Fantastic work as usual, Marty! A real pro job. And that color... 👍
I do love the colour! - It's so 60's!
An extraordinary restoration. The contrast is astonishing.
Beautiful job Marty!
I'm 90% done on one of these and - I guessed the colour right! I'm *very* happy with that! You've done a great job Marty.
Great job Marty! That’s a proper car mate!
This model really deserved the effort. Another great makeover. Thank you, Marty!
One day you'll have to tell me where to get a Kevin puppet.
I will tell you now that there were three on ebay and I bought two of them! - Wished I had got the lot as I can see him wearing out over time!
@@MartysMatchboxMakeovers :-O Oh no! Poor Kevin.
Love the color! I am glad you found the original color. Looks great!🙂
Excellent work and detail.
The car looks awesome, and your bloopers are hysterical
Another great video. Thanks marty!
So sorry the turkey baster didn't work. Love the finished product today. Good job!
Me too Janie! - But I still love it that you were thinking outside the box and came up with a great idea , in theory, to assist me with these makeovers. Your Turkey Baster was not a total loss, however, it made for an interesting segment in this video from which others can learn. Thank you so much!! Marty.
Another great rescue. I saw a Muggy Weld demonstration at a car show and thought it might come in handy for you, I'm glad it worked out. I used their aluminium weld with moderate success so I sent you the pot metal version a few weeks back. Congats!
I never thought you could weld diecast. Nice to see the advances in technology.
Neither did I. I was worried it'd end all melted.
I think this is one of the best you've done in regards to overall makeover. Brilliant!
Watching your "goofs reel" at the end reminds me of when I make a goof in my own work. I usually say to myself, "You knew it was going to happen, but you went ahead and did it anyway, didn't ya, knucklehead?"
One of your best before and after makeovers yet Marty! Loving Kevin’s continuing antics. Great video. Thank you.👍🏼🤘🏼😎
Another gem , love the old style car model. Just shows we should all take care with wire wheels though they can go anywhere - protect the mk1 eyeball replacements are not available!
Saturday morning, a cup of coffee and a fantastic Marty's Matchbox Restoration. What a great way to start the weekend.
Hope you liked it Murray and thanks for commenting!
Lovely makeover, I've got one of these in this colour so I was so pleased when I saw the end result.
Fabulous job Marty, you always amaze me with your innovative solutions to restore those poor abused cars. I loved Kevin and co. Hanging on line at the end, served them right for stealing your airbrush hose 🤣😂🤣
Stunning makeover! What a great job. Thoroughly enjoyed this one
Marty, I usually like your videos, but i really love this onehow much work you have to put in this one little car, Unlike other channels where restaurateurs do not show step by step, I love that you show all the points that you have to go to reach the final result, And that my friend besides your sense of humor with Kevin is what I appreciate most of your work.
I really appreciate all the work you do to make your videos so entertaining, keep up the good work please we really admire you . we love to se your channel while we have breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays in my house
Congrats regards.
Lovely job, also looks good in a 2-tone 'crimson & cream' colourway too!
This is one of my favourite matchbox models, and I have several mint & boxed examples.
One thing, the 'cast metal' wheels on this and other first series models of the period were never painted but were just left in a natural un-painted alloy.
Cheers
Chris
Nice job Marty, if I remember right Austin A40, A50 and A55s of that period had little chrome Joe Lucas sidelights atop the front wings.
Outstanding work Marty! The color of the body and the chrome accents look fantastic. I was glad to see the Muggy Weld worked and it looks like a very strong repair. This will really help you in future restorations. I liked this episode because like you said, it was like the first tutorials you did. The one that attracted me to your channel was the dump truck with the crushed cab and dump body. I am still amazed at how well you restored it.
Really enjoyed watching this video. That little car certainly caused you some problems. Great to see it fully restored.
I really enjoy your work on the older Matchbox models. Your approach to fixing issues is very creative. I have to looki into the Muggy Weld product.
Good gad gurdy! You did a great job!
Loved this episode, back to basics and flashback in MMM history
Great job Marty... Awesome result
What a great job Marty. It looks fantastic.
Thanks Nigel.
I really like that color, well done.
Thanks M.Boatwright, I also love this vintage colour it suits the model so well and helps to show it's age!
Great job on a classic little car Marty, surprised Matchbox put so much detail in the casting
Great to see an “old fashioned” restoration again !!
I must consciously try to do more of these as it was this type of makeover that featured first in my fledgling channel.
Marty, this is your best job yet. I really enjoy your "old school" videos.
Thanks for the feedback Stuart, I shall be introducing more of these as time goes by so that I don't lose touch with the roots of my channel.
Hey Marty, You're the best. I really enjoy your commentary as well as your excellent restorations. Keep it up young man. 5 Stars!
Wonderful old classic MMM!
Thanks Marty
Love your continued work Marty. The little things on the front guards were bullet shaped running lights, with clear glass lenses. Very Austin type of things, they were on lots of Austin cars.
Nice fix. Looks awesome Marty. Have a great weekend. Good place for Kevin too.😄😄😄😄
