"You will actually regain sharpness with each scrape of the sword instead of right at the end" Oh my god yes. Nothing hurts worse than getting tackled right before the animation finishes (except fighting MR Kush in MHWIB). I swear to this day that sharpening increased your target priority.
A lot of enemies prioritize people who are further away more often. If you do it closer to the monster it doesn't happen as frequently from my testing. It does seem that if you're the furthest away and are using any item they will target
The aggro\target as you say isnt based on rotation (1,2,3,4 ) or be random rotations (2,1,3,3,1,4) but each player having a invisible aggro bar that fills very fast over time from 0% to 100%. If it gets 100%, your bar instantly resets to 0% and you get target. Sharpness does effect aggro (Fill Rates %) Sharpeness( 50%), Getting hit (20%), Getting Stun, Sleep, Paralyzed (100%), HP gets less than 30% after a hit (60% plus 20% from hit), Whoever does the highest dmg before the next monster target pick (40%) and plus other things that can increase aggro.
Using Potion dont effect aggro as @cerdi_99 said, it just looks that way cause you either have low HP or just happen your aggro bar maxed. Neither Hunting Horn melodies effect the bar fill. Example: The monster have a cone vision and sound sensor like every enemy type in video games and if it spots someone the cone becomes a dome and register anyone who enters. Now whoever gets spotted first by the monster that player bar fills 100% in an instant and becomes target and others players bars start to fill fast. Depends on what you do or happens to you that bar fills faster and in chunks. If your bar is at 20% and you use sharpness your bar jumps at 70% regadless if you cancel it with a roll. The only way you can "decrease" the aggro if am not wrong is when you perform Sleep on monster other than that the only thing you can do is dealy your bar fill.
