The first three are really REALLY good! The first one that is based on the book is for me honestly kind of meh. But THIS one The Possession, that is based on the what actually happened in that house before the Lutzes moved in, is the absolute best. There is just something sinister and evil in the film itself, as if it is haunted. It just reeks of evil. This is the sort of film that Hollywood couldn't make today if they even tried. It is just pure and silent and horrible in every imaginable way. It details the decline into evil after this family moves in perfectly, and it gives you a genuine feeling that you took a bit of that evil with you after you're done watching. This is the movie that resembles that night mare you had and you wake up in the silence of your bedroom and even when you turn on the lights the sinister feeling that somebody walked over your grave is still in the air.

I was going to disagree with this comment when I first read it, but then I thought about it, and imo there are very few really good horror movies that have ever been made. The three horror movies that I have seen the most times (dozens of times each one) are Amityville II, Poltergeist and the original Nightmare on Elm St, and they're all 80s flicks - so maybe you're right lol. The Thing is often described as a horror, wrongly imo - it's not scary enough - but it's a great movie. And An American Werewolf in London is more of a comedy-horror and isn't scary but I find it tremendously enjoyable (I wish it was longer!) and rewatch it every few years too.

Even though Amityville II was advertised as a "Prequel" it's actually implied that it is sequel. There's a scene with Diane Franklin's character talking to Sonny when they move into the house, and saying "How there was a girl 'like her' here before her which sorta implies she's talking about Dawn DeFeo. Plus, the massacres in the second film and the opening of the first film are completely different.

Hey Drum my dude! Yeah, I first saw this movie, it was on one of the movie channels late night. I was like 8-9 years old. And it really scared the hell out of me. And it really stayed with me too. Then as an adult I gave it a view, not that long ago ironically. And this movie holds up very dam well, and it was like watching it with a much better understanding, and also there were parts that obviously I didn't catch as a youngster. And this movie is a true hidden horror gem. I mean such dark and evil undertones. This movie deserves much more credit, and I'm so very glad you're putting this one out there to the masses my friend. But this movie is heartless, it doesn't care or shy away from anything, and boy oh boy! What a great movie! And a true story as well. But make no bones about it, this movie imo is more evil than the Exorcist. And the acting is top notch. Especially Burt Young as the abusive father. I can say this movie may definitely not be for everyone, due to extremely dark and evil that goes on from beginning to end. I mean even when the family first moved into the home and they are just going about what they do, that very primal and mean spirited undertone is always looming. It's always present. I love this movie, it's a completely underrated horror classic in every way. And at times can equally be a hard watch. And that's one of the many reasons this movie rocks! Sorry so long guys, but Horror Guy loves discussing great horror movies! Be safe! ☠️

This is one of the best haunted horror movie by far. You can feel the pure evil oozing from your TV screen. Simply dark, evil, relentless, and extremely disturbing. A masterpiece and extremely so underrated. I believe that Defeo's real nickname was Sonny as well. He gave a few different accounts of that night. I believe he said he and his sister conspired to kill the parents but she ended up shooting the children so he shot her. But he also said he didn't remember much and he was hearing voices and possessed actually.

I agree that Amityville II: The Possession is a very good horror film. It is one of the most underrated movies from the 1980's. Yes, it is a worthy follow-up to the 1979 "Amityville" film that was reimagined in 2005, with Amityville 3-D (a.k.a. The Demon) released in 1983, which was a dud at the box office and with critics, leading to all of the "direct to video" follow-up films over the years. Not counting the 2005 reimagining, there have been over forty "Amityville" films made in the wake of the 1979 film. Both the 1979 and 1982 films are both scary and frightening in their own way.
Amityville II is loosely based on the DeFeo murders, and also, loosely based on the Hans Holzer novel "Murder in Amityville". A lot of what was done for the 1982 film was fictionalized by both MGM and its subsidiary Orion, who distributed the film. The thing most fictionalized was the murder scene when Sonny mudered his family one by one while they were all awake. The real way it happened was that Ronald J. DeFeo, Jr. murdered his entire family as they slept in their beds. None of the victims heard the shots nor did any of the neighbors on Ocean Avenue. Plus, Ronald J. DeFeo, Jr. said numerous times that his family was close knit and happy before they moved into the house on 112 (now 108) Ocean Avenue as they lived in a small house in Brooklyn before moving into the Ocean Avenue house. It was after moving in when their father started getting abusive and violent. Plus, he shared that him and his family saw numerous strange things in the house, like dark ghosts, voices, footsteps and many more, which made him and the family feel very uncomfortable. Plus, Ronald Jr. said that he heard voices telling him to kill his family, which he did. According to numerous psychics and parapsychologits, it was negative psychic energy that sealed the house and the ears of the sleeping Defeo family so nothing could be heard outside or by those inside. In his novel, Holzer claims that Ronald, Jr. was possibly possessed by an evil spirit and that same evil spirit told him to kill his family. In the wake of the Lutz family fleeing, numerous parapsycholgists and psychics have viisted the house and all have said that they felt the spirits and have seen numerous strange spiritual occurances within the house, alongside feeling the negative psychic energy that was responsible for why nothing was heard as Ronald Jr. murdered his entire family.
Plus, when the 1982 film was being produced, Ronald, Jr., alongside his lawyer William Weber, heard that it was being made, but Ronald, Jr., strictly told the filmmakers that his name nor the names of his family were to be used in the film, so they simply fictionalized everything, including the surname of the family. When he, Ronald, Jr., had heard about the idea of incest happening within the family, which wasn't utilized in the film as it was cut out before release, he publicly stated that there was no incest within his family before or after they moved into the house on Ocean Avenue.
Since then, a few other families have lived in the Ocean Avenue house.
I thought I'd pass this along. Thanks for uploading.

After watching Amityville II again recently, I've concluded that this film could be either a prequel or sequel depending on the viewer, and neither answer would be wrong. If you ignore the massacre in the opening of the original 1979 film where the family is shot in their beds and accept the retcon of the family being renamed the "Montellis", it's a prequel. If you're a completionist and don't ignore the opening of the 1979 film and care about "accuracy" then it could be a sequel set after the original. It's sorta similar to the debate on the film "Evil Dead II" where some consider it a soft remake or sequel to its original (when you ignore its opening). Either way works.

It’s honestly a shame. Most horror fans take one look or remember an old watch and classify it as “One of the crappy Amityville sequels” or “A cheesy exorcist wanna be” Nobody every takes a deep dive like us. I’ll never forget my first watch of the film, how sorry I felt for Sonny and how worried I was for Adamsky, surprisingly the demon was likeable and frightening of course and the family was so tragic. It was such a fun Halloween watch I believe late 2010 or 2011 when I was 8 or 9. It freaked me out especially since it was one of the first scary movies I ever saw and first possession film I ever saw. Thankfully I was with my mom who saw it many times as a kid and she knew I was getting into scary movies around that time so we watched. Around October of 2017 I found it accidentally while looking for Scary movies on Amazon Video and watched the whole thing alone. Still the terrifying film I remembered it to be and I enjoyed it more than ever. I recently found the DVD on Amazon so I’ll definitely be purchasing it to finally own. I do definitely wish more people would give it the appreciation it deserves

This is one of my favourites. Often overlooked but why?
Diane Franklin always reminded me of 'Madonna' - 'Like A Prayer' video, naturally beautiful and innocent.
I used to watch this one over and over. Then came along the remake of the original story, which is in all due respect good. Of cause then I had to go back and watch again the 1979 movie, which I now appreciate a lot more than when I first watched it.
The score is great, gliding the audience along with the demons perspective.
One of my favourite scenes is when the family are sitting for a meal. 'Sonny' just stands there, staring at them. Also the way 'Sonny' also masters the house, allowing the priest to come in, whilst possessed, then squaring up to his Father's abusive control over the family.

Hello feller, first time I've visited your channel. I enjoyed your review, and you covered all the major points. You might have also mentioned how appropriate the music and sound effects are. One 'tactic' I used to use when I rewatched this as a kid was to turn the sound off during the possession scene. It was still scary that way, but not quite as much. Also worth mentioning was the sheer number of truly creepy scenes. The two standouts here were the possession sequence and the night of the shooting spree, but there were plenty of others too: the brushes in the bedroom, the sprinkler scene, the jail cell interview, the rapping on the door, the demon's 'tour' of the house when it covers up the crucifix - all of it comes off perfectly. (I'm getting the creeps again just writing this, lol.)
I was about to watch the 2005 remake of the original Amityville, and then thought about maybe watching The Possession instead, which I have considered the scariest movie I've ever seen since I watched it as a kid in the 80s (hello to everyone else lucky enough to have had this experience; the world could end tomorrow and we'll still have this in common) and then I thought "I wonder what youtubers are saying about it." So I did a search and your review was the first thing I clicked on.
I must say, I'm relieved that you liked it. It's unfathomable to me how someone could possibly not like this or find it terrifying. I was a fairly religious kid and at about 10 when I first saw this, I was reading about witches and demons and the occult and stuff, which I thought was all real, so you can imagine what effect this movie had on me - freaked me right the fuck out.
The first time I watched it is when it was playing on TV in 1987. I had seen the ads for it and I thought it would be good, so I decided to tape it. I watched till just after the possession scene, and then I went to bed both because I was tired and too scared. The next day my friend came over, who had watched it till the end, and he watched it with me again. I was getting so scared I kept asking him to tell me what happens next (something I never do) to calm me down a bit, but it was still scary as hell. (Yo, Drew McFarlane, if you're reading this - it's Dan who lived two houses down from ya when we were kids!)

There's a lot of suggestion in the early scenes that Sonny and Patricia were very close due to their parents' treatment of them. The father was violent and the mother basically turned a blind eye out of fear. It likely drew the siblings closer because they could only depend on each other. Yes, Patricia was clearly interested in Sonny. She even gets annoyed when he briefly jokes that she's not his type.

I think there were 5 kids in the DeFeo family. This 1982 movie is very "loosely" based on the DeFeo family...but it's the most "extreme" movie in the franchise. I did like it a lot as a teenager, when i saw it on VHS.😁👍🏻 There was a film made years later, in the Amityville franchise, I think it was called "The Amityville Murders"..which actually HAS Diane Franklin playing the mother this time, and Burt Young played her father in that movie.
