  • Of the remake craze, one film that barely gets a mention is The Amityville Horror from 2005. Perhaps it was the spotty rep of Platinum Dunes or the unconventional casting of Ryan Reynolds as the lead? Let's explore. #Amityville #Spooktober

This is one of the best remakes I've ever seen. Ryan Reynolds performance is next level. I didn't take him seriously at first bc he usually plays the funny guy. But he was incredible as George! You could tell by just looking at him if he was good or bad. Loved it!

I never saw this or the 79 version. I do however know that the real life George Lutz was into the occult. That's one of the reasons he bought the house. So the question is was it the events of what happened in the house that George Lutz went insane or was because he was into the occult?

I recommend that you watch the original first bcuz it’s a classic (and especially if you plan to watch this remake)! It’s one of my favorite movies; it scared the shit out of me and my brothers when we were little! I’ve always picked it over The Exorcist in terms of which one scared me the most! The Exorcist always grossed me out beyond return but it’s not the “scariest movie I’ve ever seen in my life” as most ppl feel. 🤷🏾‍♀️

The Amityville Horror is definitely one of my favorite remakes of all time and in my opinion, it's the best of the Amityville movies. Platinum Dunes is still around, they produce more original films and the Quiet Place movies now. Saw this back in 2005 or 2006 through my family and this scared me good.
Ryan Reynolds does a good job taking on a more serious role in this movie and Melissa George was very good in this and she is quite underrated. Also interesting to see a young Chloe Grace Moretz here as well as Jesse James from The Butterfly Effect.
Rachel Nichols as the babysitter.... This was my first introduction to her and she did good here. I've always enjoyed this movie.

Completely concur that this is an underrated remake. The scene where the youngest son is using the bathroom at night & there is a figure in the mirror is one of the scariest movie moments I experienced as a kid in 2005. Ryan R. & everyone else gives a pretty solid performance. The re-writing of Jody as a little girl w/ a hole in her head (as opposed to a pig with red eyes) was super eerie. The further backstory given to John Ketchem is fun. Only thing I miss while watching this is a 31-year-old Margot Kidder.😍
I love the 1979 OG & I love the remake because I watched them at the same time growing up. They both are different styles & fulfill a different purpose. The original is a classic ‘70s slow burn with some great acting by the priest/ Margot K/ James B, and the remake is a more up-front, 2000s supernatural horror film with some scarier moments than the original.

Completely agree, I've watched the original 3 times and I still can hardly remember anything about it. I'm sure the original is more loyal to the original story but the remake is more watchable, more entertaining and even better performances - Ryan Reynolds does an amazing job being likeable and descending into madness, Melissa George is equally as strong as a mother determined to protect her family and excellent debut by little Chloe Grace Moretz.

It’s funny when this review was posted I was just thinking about this movie because I saw it at Walmart. For 14 bucks for both the remake and original I figured what the hell after watching your review. I definitely enjoyed it more than when it came out, but I do feel it’s a little too bombastic or “modern”? If that’s the word to use. Everything with the ghost girl I thought was cartoonish aside for that bit with the babysitter. The main issue the movie had was the directing. I thought Ryan was great but there’s no build up to him becoming a dick/possessed. There was a lot less subtlety and I think that’s because it’s not a slow burn like the original. However, I got a much better appreciation for the original. Like you I thought it was initially too slow, but I guess that goes to show your tastes can change with age. Either way great review as always man! I might not have dug the movie as much as you but I gained a greater appreciation for it and the original thanks to you! Keep on keeping on man

Fantastic remake, this film proves Ryan Reynolds can do serious drama whom gives a excellent performance here as George, the scene were he tells the kid to hold the wood & not move as he bares down with the axe still gives me shivers.
Melissa George is excellent too as Kathy trying jeep her family together & the movie keeps the tone of the original but tells it's own story mixing genuine scares & suspense.
No way in hell I'd live in that house, if I pulled up to view that house I'd taken one look & drove off, those windows look like eyes that are staring right through you.

My favourite Amytiville film without a doubt is part 2! The Possession! Awesome film.

The Nightmare remake I don't like the most but I think it's watchable enough. the Platinum Dunes remakes are fun in their own way.

its a shame that we are not getting anymore remakes since i think platinum dunes did the Purge movies but that a different horror genre mix with action in it but they are done with remakes when it comes to the Platinum Dunes company and i always wanted a sequel to these remakes like the Amityville horror 2005 Friday the 13th 2009 and also A Nightmare on elm street and they are producers by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller too brother

Let me say I never bought into the "true story" behind The Amityville Horror. That being said the original was pretty good and brought chills and solid performances and nice cinematography. The remake however sucked. Jump scares out the ass, and it came out in 2005 when remakes were being cranked out left and right and were still basically a fresh coat of paint on an old house. Not as slavish as say The Omen 2006 remake, but still had little reason to exist. Of the top of my head the only remakes that really did justice were TCM and yeah I'll say My Bloody Valentine. At least RZ H2 did something wholly different so I'm not asking myself halfway through which version I'm watching.

If you like the original Amityville storyline, you might also enjoy a novel - marketed as a 'true story' - based on it by Jay Anson. I'm not at all a fan of horror novels, but I'd already seen the first two Amityvilles before I read this, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did, because I found it very creepy. It was published in 1978, before the movie came out, and the movie is actually quite faithful to it. I'm going through a bit of an Amityville 'revival' atm, and have a copy of this novel right next to me as a write this. I umm 'borrowed' it from a friend in high school and er... 'forgot' to give it back. I remember lending it to a couple of other friends who I used to often watch movies with together, and they agreed that it was creepy.

This is probably the best Platinum Dunes horror movie remake I’ve seen yet! (Besides the 2003 remake of the Texas chainsaw massacre) Ryan Reynolds absolutely rocks as George Lutz. The acting here is solid, and surprisingly good jumpscare that got me good.

@DrumDums I just finally checked this out being a big Ryan Reynolds fan and let’s be honest here, Melissa George added some nice eye candy to the package as a bonus but, I mostly went into it for Ryan Reynolds to see what he was capable of in a horror movie in general let alone a remake and I was pleasantly surprised.
I also liked how he didn’t go over the top in really any of the scenes for me, I mean except for the end and that wasn’t really that over the top for me because, he just seemed like a character archetype I have seen in a dozen movies with similar premises but, that doesn’t mean he was bad by any means, I thought he had the best scenes in the movie.
The only thing that disappointed me and maybe that’s just my pervy side coming out I’ll be honest is I didn’t get to see Melissa George’s boobs in the sex scene her and Ryan had but, hey again that might just be my single pervy side coming out there but, I didn’t dock the movie for it as I know that was just a weird little nitpick I had that was personal and not something a normal person would dock it for.

Yeah, me too, I feel like to me, especially with Ryan Reynolds being known these days for my beloved Deadpool movies, I felt like he could have easily played it up as more comedic but, thankfully he didn’t.
Honestly, not nearly as good, but I got some Jack Nicholson from The Shining vibes from his character, maybe that’s just me but, the way he was slowly losing his mind until, the climax when he ultimately snapped, that was really more so what I mean, not that he was as good as Jack Nicholson’s performance in The Shining, no way in hell.

There are close on 40 movies with the title Amityville in them to date - kind of dilutes the impact of what was a decent horror novel by Jay Anson and the subsequent 2 movies, the original, based on the novel and Possession, inspired by the DeFeo family tragedy with a possession/exorcism tacked on. I'll say one thing - if the house didn't have those quarter moon windows, half the lure would be gone. Jay Anson exaggerated so much of the Lutz family story, no doubt to knowing what had happened there to the DeFeo family. By all accounts, Butch, as he was known, was messed up, a drug addict, and went on a rampage, claiming voices told him - pretty popular defence strategy back then. The whole 'there's something about that house' - the one with creepy windows (look like eyes, demonic ones !!!) is laughable. All subsequent owners of that house have lived happily there, apart from people turning up to take pictures - until they got rid of the damned windows. No problems since. Nice video btw

I saw the remake, and while I liked it, I too am going to have to watch it again. I saw it both in the movie theater and then wen it came out. I thought it was a lot like the shining the way they only made the father George go crazy and it didn't really effect the kids that much, except for the little girl when she was talking to Jody. The babysitter scene I think was the scariest part of the whole movie. I do agree with you that this remake doesn't really get talked about, and the funny thing is, I too saw the original, and the creepiest scene that grabbed me was when the priest blessed the house and heard the voice telling him to get out. While I think the original stuck more to the book, I think this one was better at making George go crazier and crazier, and you could really see his behavior changing. I'm going to rewatch it again too (the remake) to see if I still feel the same way or if my opinion changed.
As far as remakes go, while it's not a perfect remake, I do think it's one of the better remakes of the 2000's, and certainly one of the better remakes I've seen anyway.

They had a stunt woman double Chloe Grace Moretz but from what I understand they only used one shot of the stunt woman. I think the rest was real. I have heard Ryan Reynolds say the when she finally falls down into his arms they hit the wall. That was only because he was so afraid of catching her and he tried to shield her body. Of course the had cranes and all of that but from what I have heard, yes this was a real-time take. I think Chloe actually got on top of that roof for that scene and walked.
