It is my impression that Dame Joan Sutherland could have kept singing until she turned 70.
She sings so amazingly in this clip.

I was 12 when I saw Marilyn Horne and Joan Sutherland in Norma at the Met. Joan Sutherland's voice was huge. That's what I remember. We had standing room only and had to lean against a bar. It was not comfortable, but they were probably the only tickets available. I went with my father.

Dame Joan looks absolutely gorgeous in that beautiful, opulent green gown and on the very last night of being on an operatic stage, she sang so incredibly beautifully in duets with Marilyn Horne and Luciano Pavarotti plus her own indididual singing ending with a nost touching :Home, Sweet Home". Dame Joan absolutely wanted to retire after 40 years but with that voice she could have gone for a few years yet!
R.I.P.+ Dear Joan. You will forever be loved and your name will live for all eternity.

I was there, working in the foyer bookstall. It was tremendous and very moving. We all rushed around from our places in the foyer to her dressing room after this scene to get autographs from her and Pavarotti. They were SO sweet to us - and FUNNY!

Yes, I remember this night at Covent Garden, Dame Joan Sutherland's Covent Garden farewell. It was a wonderful night at the opera for all who were there and for those watching on television. And what a great trio of stars - the stupendous Dame Joan Sutherland, the matchless Luciano Pavrotti, and one of the greatest of Mezzo-sopranos, the marvellous Marilyn Horne. Trios don't come any better. 🥰❤❤❤

Joan made her first stage appearance in 1951 in Sydney in Goossen's Judith, and by 1952 sang her first leading role as Amelia in Masked Ball at Covent Garden. The 1959 Garden Lucia made her a superstar and she sang her last full role in Les Huguentos in Sydney in 1990. This last appearance channelling our other great star Melba at the Garden as a guest performer ended a 40 year career, after ruling the world's stages for over 30 years. So missed.

Things like this are such a treat and celebration of the great institutions of operatic singing. I was think while watching, that we just don't have the careers where artists can come out and show their wares any longer.

"There's no place like home" was sung by the great Australian soprano Nellie Melba in her concerts. Before I knew this and what "home" referred to, I was somewhat put-off when Joan sang it, mistaking it for a signal that the show was over, now go home!

It is the tradition that during the New Year’s Eve performances of the Fledermaus you have surprise guests singing arias from other operas. Basically as entertainment during the ball that takes places in Orloff’s palace. Check out Natalie Dessay singing the Frühlingsstimmen waltz.

Sumptuous dress? She looks like she ran into a Christmas tree set on the way to the stage. But, that voice deserves the most respect from a queen such as yourself. I doubt you know anything about the voice and the olympic art of operatic singing.

    • @wilsonwatt9283

Such an insult to one of the greatest voices in recorded operatic history. Sutherland here is 64 and still outsinging most voices ever recorded. She was a very tall woman [I met her and had tea in her dressing room with her after a Met performance] and often told interviewers that she enjoyed the "dressing up" for her concert performances.
