"Leo Fender created the Stratocaster and God created David Gilmour to play it." Said with all due respect to Jimi, Eric, Ritchie, Rory, SRV et al, but no-one can put so much emotion into a guitar than David Gilmour. RIP to Rick Wright and to the crazy diamond himself, Syd Barrett.

David Gilmour is 73 and still rocks that guitar like a 20-year-old. The man is timeless. I can remember when I was a teenager sitting in my friends' basement like an episode of that 70s show, (only I lived it) just laying back on the sofa eyes closed, listening to Pink Floyd, passing a joint...black lights on, blacklight posters all lit up beautifully florescent. I love that opening... it takes me back to June 10, 1975... That concert was sold out in less than an hour and I stood in line for hours waiting for ticketron to open up at Sears so I could get my tickets. That show was off the hook. They played Shine on you crazy Diamond and the crowd went insane... it was released that year on their 'Wish you were here' LP... I was just a little kid in those days but I loved Rock music. There is no other band in the world like Pink Floyd. It's such a shame they've lost some talented band members over the years but they still sound incredible.

The thing with Pink Floyd is, yes the singles are awesome, but to really understand them you need to listen to the whole album, especially the records made in the 70's from The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and the The Wall (1979). All the songs flow into each other and are connected and most importantly tell the story. So happy for you discovering Pink Floyd.

With they title of the song, they are referring to Syd Barrett as a crazy diamond. Shine on you crazy diamond is about the band members still caring about Syd (you crazy diamond) and remembering him (shine on). You could also apply this to your situation.
If you take the first letters of Shine, You and Diamond, you get the name Syd. A bit of trivia some PF fans dont know.

Really though, if you like the music you have got to try listening to some of their full albums, they designed their albums to be a complete experience with songs and stories that blend from one song into the next, you will hear a song and before you even know it you're in another song.

YES!!! David Gilmour is my favourite guitarist EVER! He plays sooo beautifully, & simply, yet profoundly. I was fortunate enough to see Floyd in their tour of The Wall, & again in England, was amazing! I listen to Pink Floyd every single day. And this song is about the former lead singer (& originator of the band), whom overdosed on LSD & lost his already tweaked mind, he spent his life in a psych hospital. So much of their material was about this “Crazy Diamond”.. so pretty, yet a sad feel to it. The studio version is phenomenal! Animals is hands down my fave album of theirs.. Dogs, Pigs, they are like quests with music that is so calming &’deep.. LOVE this!

It gave me so much joy watching you experience the music that I adore - it's like passing a torch. Seeing the pleasure in your eyes. Thanks for giving me that experience. Gilmour' plays his guitar, but the instrument sings. It cries. It tells you about no food on the table and hard times. He came to Tennessee to take blues guitar lessons. Bet your spirit knew that before I told you. Love to see you enjoy music. And yeah, I know exactly what you mean about Uncle Junior. For me it was Uncle John and Aunt Clara.

They drafted in Gilmour to take up the slack, but the last straw was when he crushed up a load of Mandrax (Qualude) tablets, his favourite pharmaceutical, mixed them with hair cream, poured the lot over his head and walked on stage. I have the first line of Comfortably Numb on my left chest. It's the favourite song of my grandparents and they want it played at their funeral. When they die they will still be in my heart. "Hello, is there anybody in there" will refer to them still being in my heart, which is why its placed on my left chest.

Love Pink Floyd. I really like most of their music.
When I'm feeling stressed or can't sleep I listen to PF sometimes with earphones. Their music just takes me to a whole different universe..🤗💭🎶🎶
Although I WILL NOT listen to the song "Time" with headphones on.
I had just turned 15 & I was playing racquetball at some court that was close to where I was taking my AP classes. My future brother-in-law worked at the courts part time so I felt "safe" and not alone. He was also a police officer. I only played the days my future brother-in-law was scheduled to work simply for safety & I was alone. I had no interest in "boys" then. I was literally a "good girl"!
I was used to good at racquetball & could hold my own with a "decent" male player.
Shortly after I started playing regularly I met this guy at the courts. He was in his late 20s about 6'3" & apx 220lbs. He was very polite & seemed very nice. We started playing doubles & also against each other several times a week. Again, I had NO interest in "boys" so I NEVER gave him any ideas that I was interested in him or anyone. Then this guy would show up & if I was playing with ANY male player, singles or doubles, this nut would start a fight with whomever I was playing with. It wasn't long until this guy became a crazy stalker & was following me everywhere.
I have no idea how that nut found out where I was staying since I moved around A LOT back then. One night I couldn't sleep. I was listening to Pink Floyd "Time" with my earphones on. This nut was breaking through my bedroom window & I didn't hear anything because of my earphones. By the grace of God, I opened my eyes & saw that nut climbing through my window! I got fast, ran through the house screaming for someone to call the police as loud as I could!
I did get a restraining order fast thanks to my future brother-in-law/police officer. He had witnessed a lot of what this nut was like at the racquetball courts so getting a restraining order was easy.
It was over a year I lived a paranoid nightmare. I had to move again & again. This guy would find me when I moved & I had to stay relatively close to my work and school they always found me. he didn't get close to me but he would be sitting in the parking lot sitting in his car just watching. He made my life insanely stressful.
To this day I have some kind of personal defense that I literally sleep with.
I have no idea what happened to him or if he was ever put in jail for stalking anyone else. I never saw him after the following Christmas.
Well I didn't expect to be sharing that story just because of Pink Floyd and MRM asking what we think of when we hear songs. I know it was a different song but the band still has a certain sound it's carried from song the song.

The song is about founder member Syd Barrett who succumbed to mental illness and drugs in the late 1960s. Syd also named the band Pink Floyd in homage to his favorite old school, black blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

The album came out as I entered my senior year of high school and was a headphone favorite (along with Dark Side Of The Moon and others). The entire album and Dark Side Of The Moon are classics that deserve to be in your collection.
The album is about Sid Barret, one of the founders and former member of Pink Floyd, and his degeneration into schizophrenia after years of drug abuse (mostly massive doses of LSD), the pressures of stardom/success and the pervasiveness of the corporate music industry ("Oh, by the way, which one's Pink?"). Sid Barret actually showed up at the recording sessions and the band didn't initially recognize him so far had he deteriorated There is, in fact, a very good documentary about the making of the album which also necessarily covers the early years of Pink Floyd.
If you want to go for another great progressive rock act check out Emerson Lake and Palmer (ELP). Many would recommend the guitar ballads such as "From The Beginning" & "Lucky Man", or the more famous keyboard tracks such as "Take A Pebble," "Karn Evil 9, Impression 1, Part 2" or perhaps "Hoedown" or "Fanfare For The Common Man", their adaptations of Aaron Copeland compositions. But the track that, to me, as a rabid fan and keyboard player, epitomizes ELP is "Trilogy." It shows off Kieth Emerson's delicate classical/jazz piano chops and Greg Lake's vocal range, followed by their hard rockin' constructions and improvisations, all supported by Carl Palmer's precision drumming. They never performed this song live except for one horrible, abortive attempt, so please use the remastered album track (sorry, no interesting visuals).
    Peace,
    Uncle Bob

@Modern Rennescance Man this song was written for and about the original lead singer of the band. His name was Syd Barrett, he was super creative but his acid addiction had him so far gone that it made him sick and he wasn't the same anymore, he was mentally ill. sadly he passed away. 😢

I am very glad you liked this. They have done some better versions of this song. I have found with Pink Floyd that they have so many versions of each song and most of them are fantastic in there own right. Listen to a few more and find which ones suit your mood. Most important is to listen to whole albums because each one tells a story. For me they are the greatest band ever and I can spend hours sitting in my Lazy Boy chair with my eyes closed and be immersed in the musical world they have created.

David Gilmour plays guitar with feeling like no one else. This song is from Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” album. Written in honor of their friend and founding member Syd Barrett. BTW, this song is actually longer. You should do more Pink Floyd.

I bought Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on 8 track...yeah 8 track...in the mid 70s when I was 16 and going to have the house to myself for an entire week. I got back from the mall, turned off every light in the house except a little red night light in the kitchen, popped the tape in and laid on the couch. I had no idea that the album/tape started with the sound of a heartbeat and it scared the crap out of me being in the house alone. I had just read Poe's The Tell Tale Heart in the last few months prior to that which obviously didn't help. All the lights came back on and I enjoyed Floyd the next day while the sun was shining.

Each Pink Floyd song is a statement that individually may be different, but collectively is concisely grandiose.
