I lay on the roof of my house in the north of Scotland and looked at the stars, listening to this on my cheap record player shortly after it came out. I was 14. I'm 59. It feels just as fresh.

When my friend "Diamond Dave" passed away many years ago, his parents arranged to have this song played at the end of the funeral service. Those first five minutes blasting from the church as we gathered to move him to the cemetery is one of the most 'connected' moments of humanity that I've experienced. The music definitely helped me get through a crushing moment in time. Over time, the sadness of the day faded into memory, but the human connection felt remains to this day.

Imagine how we felt back in the 1970s when there were zero distractions like DVD players computers cell phones video game none of that stuff most of us had TVs with four or five channels at the most and a record player. Then out of the blue this kind of music comes along! I think you'll find Pink Floyd an almost bottomless rabbit hole. And the mechanical noises you heard at the end of that was the music transitioning into the next song "welcome to the machine". Just sit back and enjoy and you don't have to Bob your head to Pink Floyd because if you watch a concert with them you'll see very few people moving, most of the audience is usually mesmerised. Like I said earlier with Pink Floyd just listen and enjoy!

Their song "Echoes" (studio version) is nearly 24 minutes and you'll probably be wondering where the time went on that one as well. It also allows room for contemporary musicians who aren’t playing just 4 chord pop songs with minimal dynamics, and lyricists to really express themselves in a sophisticated, yet accessible way. Enjoy, like us oldies have for the last 6 decades!

All of them liked also Rock music, none of them liked Pink Floyd (Pink Floyd is my favorite rockband, by the way). My last teacher, who is one of the greatest guitar players ever, hated them. I have won many schollarships and studied in Chile, USA and Germany. I have always been around classical musicians, jazz musicians and songwriters. Only a few of them shared my love for Pink Floyd. A lot of them professional guitarists didn't like Pink Floyd because of Gilmour's playing, which I can totally understand, since some of his solos are so incredible obvious and uncreative that you could totally fall sleep. I don't think Gilmour is bad, I just think he is overrated and I think most of my collegues would agree. Pink Floyd is interesting because of Barrett and Waters songwriting and none of them could play instruments very well, only Gilmour, but he wasn't a virtuoso either. Pink Floyd is a master of sparsity. Each note is given time to develop, each instrument is given room to extend to the fullest.
Loud is given the silence in between, only in contrast to silence loud is REALLY loud.
That is an art in itself.

(note to loud: that is even physiological. When you listen to something that has constantly the same noise level, your noise perception diminishes. It will recover in a few hours or days to the original level, but if not given time, it may permanently cause hearing loss.)

The greatest track Pink Floyd ever created. If this doesn't move your soul from side to side in a gentle soothing motion then I'm afraid your soul has left you for another... love it... Great reaction too.. glad that you are now a convert matey. 👍🏻👍🏻

A tribute to their erstwhile band member, Syd Barrett, who lost it on drugs in the 60s. SYD = Shine on You crazy Diamond.

yeah man, glad you liked it, musical masterpiece, parts 6-9 still to come I hope. Then perhaps let these guys really stretch their legs with all 23 minutes of Echoes when you have the time. Nobody like em before or since, meaningful songs married with instrumental quality and perfect sound was their thing, unique band, untouchable in my mind. Peace bro x

Anyone can take on "Time," "Comfortably Numb," and "Wish You Were Here."
It takes gusto and commitment to go after "Dogs" and "S.o.Y.C.D."
    Kudos, my man.

Now take that first transition that was in the Minor chord and look at your reaction to it. Now imagine being 16 years old and having just bought this album, you have headphones on and have just smoked a fat joint. I want you to imagine what was like not only growing up in this era, but experiencing this incredible music and almost taking it for granted. It was an awesome time to be a teenager. Pink Floyd were my nighttime guardians

The album runs straight through and you should try it out. Their last five albums are all concept albums and tell a story or revolve around a theme. To get the full experience lay back with your headphones and dive in. It’s the only real way to experience Pink Floyd.

I have enjoyed Pink Floyd since basic training in 1986 and was able to see them live, center stage, 5 rows back in Manheim Germany. (It was like seeing God) Simply the best concert I have ever been to. Put your headphones on, clothes your eyes, and go on a journey. Their music can bring you to tears!

Best thing about this reaction (aside from seeing the pure musical joy you get from it) is that you respect the music enough to not stop the track. You just let it play.
