  • One of the more opaque colors in my range of paints; single pigment, PW6:1 Buff Titanium handmade watercolor paint.
This naturally tan, ‘’unbleached’’ variant of titanium white can perfectly be used on its own. As a mixer, it mixes beautifully soft pastels and soft dreamy earth tones. Ideal for landscapes, portraits and anything floral.
The term unbleached is used sometimes, but it’s not really the case. PW6 is almost fully pure titanium dioxide, giving a pure white and very opaque pigment. PW6:1 has the same base, it also contains iron oxide. Giving it its beautiful sand/tan like color.
For that reason, I’ve added it in my mixing palette instead of a true white. I just love what it can do with bright colors!
What do you use Buff Titanium for? Or how would you use it?

Even though my knowledge of paint making is lacking, I'm still able to contribute with this single post.

Funny story- my first batch of paint ever was Buff Titanium cause I heard it was an easy way to get into the process. I'd gotten the paint into pans, set them up to dry out of the way. Before I knew what was happening, my brat cat had pushed his way into the room where I mull, then rubbed up onto the tray of fresh made paint. Can you guess what happened? He knocked the buff titanium ALL OVER my desk. Thank goodness it's a non-staining color and I could clean things up. Plus, he's not tried that since so I think he learned his lesson about those trays LOL. Cats can be very pushy about getting where they shouldn't be.

Haha well good thing he learned a lesson. I can imagine all the paws being visible everywhere because of the opaqueness of this 😅

When painting wet and let it touching another wet color (I don't remember which) it shapes dendrite like forms where the colors touch. I love those unexpected effects.
I use it for desert landscapes or to mute any too (at that moment) bright color. Mixes with earthy colors...

Omg lol… I did a thing… made eggshell paint… what a noise that made… doubt it’s worth doing? I don’t know 🤷🏽‍♀️ but the experience was interesting. Nine eggshells made 6 half pans. Made a very pale buff color. I mulled for over an hour… it might still be gritty? 😂 I did my best anyway. Check that off bucket list✅

Oow any way to show me a swatch?

Sure I will try to swatch it tomorrow during daylight hours. It’s almost same as the paper on white watercolour paper. I haven’t tried it on black, currently don’t have that. I have a mixed media black, will try on white and black, and over a couple of colours too.

@@dirtyblueshop no way can I show a swatch, it’s so horrible, truly lol … very gritty! Even after an hour mulling. I will need to learn more about how it’s done. It looks nice in the pan, and would be ok to add dots to something like a mandala picture. So I won’t throw it away at least. I even used an electric grinder to make a fine dust first too. Would two hours mulling make it better? No idea… ever tried this yourself?

This was so satisfying to watch! Looks like a lovely pigment to work with. I don't use this color, as it is easy to mix a lookalike from what I have (white with a touch of earth color like ochre or umber) in the rare case that I feel like mixing a pastel tone. In the end, it's what buff titanium is, no? Titanium white with impurities?

Thanks! And.. well you’re right! 😅 I like to offer it as single pigment, but it’s easily mixable
