The problem with branding child stars so they can transition into adulthood is that they seem to emphasize sexiness over maturity, which sells well because adults fetishize young adults. Being an adult is more than acting promiscuous or sexy, there’s more to life than who we’re with or attractive to.
Thank you. That’s such a true statement. You’re right, adulthood isn’t just about sexual maturity. It’s also about thinking and loving well. Sexual maturity is supposed to be an intimate and physical manifestation of those two things. But adulthood actually begins with intellectual and personal maturity. It’s how we consent, for example. Sadly, JoJo has learned the opposite. It’s not just her though… it’s laden throughout our entire culture.
She should look at the girl that played Vicky on the old show 'Small Wonder'. She walked away and lived a normal life in private and became a nurse. Danica McKellar, that played Winnie Cooper on 'The Wonder Years', went to college and kicked arse in her math studies. Neither needed to resort to being a pervert for degenerates to become actually inspiring people.
I honestly don't think Jojo *knows* who she is as an adult, or like, a person. She's always had to be ON her whole life, I don’t think she's ever been given the space and time to figure out who she genuinely is and what she genuinely likes. Just yesterday I saw a recent Zendaya quote where she talks about how transitioning into playing adult roles has been hard for her, and you understand that it's because she didn’t hit normal social milestones due to being a child star, so she doesn't know what a normal adult, or even young adult, is supposed to be like. I feel this might be especially true for Jojo, who was not only a child star but a *brand* her whole life.
Absolutely! We're becoming a more aware culture of mental health but it seems like often it's all forgotten in the face of the rich and famous. Jojo was a kid who learned how to be a brand before she properly entered puberty. Imagine the weird ways that must effect you, and then feeling alone about it because it's not as common or looked into. I was a MESS as a teenager and for most of my 20s. I can't imagine going through that publicly and while being reminded constantly that I'm an example for the youth. Jesus.
Her rebrand was basically the kidzbop version of Miley Cyrus' Bangerz era rather than exactly rebranding herself as an artist or exploring her identity 💀
@ville__you know your comment history is public right? 💀 if you don’t want to support this channel, maybe quit commenting. you’re boosting engagement and driving more people to this video.
"Karma" was a song written for Miley Cyrus in 2010' and I really see her banging it back in the days, but it is nothing new and also it was no written by JoJo as she claimed to
The fact that many child celebrities need to “rebrand” themselves is actually really dystopian. It is actually really thought provoking to think that we need to think oursleves as a product something to lure people in or just something to make money off.
Dystopian or despotic even? I remember clips from Dance Moms and I did witness despotic behaviors from at least one of the grown ups. You could probably guess the main tyrant, but if you can't that's okay.
@@joshlikesfries it's cool. I just had to make sure I knew where you were coming from. There's something so lucid about how the Industry treats youths and has continued to not fully reckon with what's happened before. Edited because "lurid" wasn't quite it. Lucid. It's clear that the Industry has exploited youths.
Its really sad when you think about it because she is another child star that was exploited by adults (i.e. her mother, Abbey Lee) and was allowed to form inappropriate 'friendships' with adults (Colleen & James). And the brainwashing worked because she defends them still and has her own allegations of cruelty towards young girls. I can't remember but she was on a podcast and said something along the lines of being scared of therapy and as outsider looking in, she certainly could benefit from therapy to unpack the bullying & her chaotic childhood. Full transparency I hated Dance Moms it felt like I was watching brain rot lol
All of this is fair and true Too bad she's so deeply brainwashed she refuses to get the help that would save her. She's all in on the deviant world of fame 😢
Agreed. Dance Moms was basically socially-sanctioned child abuse. I only watched a few episodes, and my heart broke for those poor dancers. No child should ever be subjected to that kind of cruelty, especially when it's deliberately staged for entertainment and profit.
i completely agree, although she is an adult now so it’s up to her to heal from the trauma she went through to avoid inflicting pain onto others. as they say, trauma is not your fault but healing from it is your responsibility.
It honestly wouldn't be shocking if this whole "Karma" routine is a glorified distraction from the disturbing allegations against her and Jessalynn. And the fact that she invited Colleen and James to her release party. Sigh.😬🤦🏼♀️
I need to read up the Jessalynn part to have a more informed opinion because while Jojo Siwa wasn't on my playlist during my childhood I did watch a lot of (trash) Reality TV moments. Edited to clarify and add that I hope the cycle of bad choices by her and her company gets broken because she deserved better than the childhood she got and shouldn't have others go through that. On the other part: Since you did mention THAT Colleen and THAT James that does clue me in to what personalities her team thought were tolerable at the time. They might not known about all of what Colleen was up to, but they knew that James was the type to be rude such as when he would text during movies among other not okay moments.
@myownheroisonlyme5721 Jojo and Jessalyn started managing a girl group with kids between the ages of like 9-13, including at least one girl with a disability, and abused them verbally, physically, medically, and financially.
@@MariU9 liked for that update on the info I only had part of. That's not okay. I can see why there are questions about how Jojo was treated and how she's handling things now.
I think her main issue is that she doesn’t have an audience for the rebrand. She dedicated years of her life building an extremely child friendly brand with glitter and rainbows. Now that she’s going out of her way to do the opposite she loses the child audience she had before, and due to her previous branding can’t find an audience that’ll take her seriously.
You also need men to come along when you're trying to do a sexy rebrand. About 90% of the attention Miley got for her rebrand was from men. They were the ones talking about her on social media every day and posting the latests pics or videos. Jojo, didn't just portray herself as a 6 year old girl for the previous decade, but she also has a completely shapeless body (no hips, no curves, no... anything) and she has the voice of a middle-aged mother of 7 who smokes 3 packs of Newports a day. She's the antithesis of sexy. Should have stayed in her lane.
I've seen so many people get angry at Olivia Rodrigo for being a "bad example for children" with her suggestive dance moves on the GUTS tour which is just so ridiculous. We need to allow artists to grow up and change, it's not their job to be child-friendly!
Her album literally has that parental advisory stamp and it's called GUTS for fu¢ks sake... The real question is why are parents bringing their small children to that tour? It's just stupid parenting and shifting blame.
When parents complain that a celeb is a bad role model, it tells me that they are failures as parents. YOU are the role model for your kiddo, not some rando on TV or social media.
Finally someone said it. I remember growing up my parents would tell me: don't do as such, do this instead, the T.V. is not your teacher, etc (I'm a millennial so I grew up watching tv). They always lead by example.
Exactly!!! Britney Spears was the it girl when I was a little kid, and I was obsessed with her. It’s so funny how many adults were concerned about her being a bad role model, when in reality they were being the bad role models for girls my age by tearing Britney down, slut shaming her, and using her unraveling psychological state as entertainment.
Her “mature” rebrand somehow feels just as childish as her old brand. Like her black make up and outfits are literally just her old outfits but with the colors turned down. Humping things and acting comedically sexual don’t automatically make something mature. Crass and vulgar yes but not necessarily mature
I feel like no child star has rebranded themselves better than Zendaya. And that's because she wasnt even rebranded. She did another Disney show, one in which she portrayed a more mature character than the past one. And slowly started to take on roles that were more challenging and mature. I think her fashion and her developing into a style icon did a lot of the heavylifting too.
@@Soulcrash3WHOLE HEARTED AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT. The industry and media has proved time and time again that the majority of child stars who act out like this were only put in those situations because of neglectful and narcissistic parents who only wanted to capitalize off of their kid’s fame and money. It’s so unfortunate for those kids because it’s clear they’ve never had good role models and when you mix that up with the stress and pressure of being a child star, it’s no wonder why they immediately get themselves into bad situations because all they really want is their freedom
I think Zendaya is in a better position as an actor, though. I agree it was a smooth transition, but no actor actually needs a "brand", unlike people whose art/creation are at the forefront of their career. There's always this knowledge that she's not her the characters she played so people don't link her form of art (acting) to her actual personality
She's a great dancer, but her music doesn't appeal to anyone is the answer. Yes, there have been bad girl rebrands like Britney and Xtina, but the difference between those two and JoJo is that the two were musically talented whether or not you cared for their music.
@@mayusachess exactly, the only reason her dancing looked good on dance moms was because Abby filled her routine with multiple turns, acro moves that make it look hard to distract average viewer from the fact, that her technique was absolutely horrible.
If JoJo wasn't an awful person i'd be able to ironically enjoy Karma, but it's painfully obvious she's using this to cover her tracks. I wish her mother was better and actually got her the help she needed after dance moms (that show was just abusive to those girls)
@@lovinoia they're a bot account, they usually comment homophobia they've commented on some of my comments on different youtube channels, please block and report Ville,
She’s still so young, and I’m not talking about her age. Something about this doesn’t feel genuine. But I’m from the era of Christina to Xtina, now THAT was a bad girl transition
I totally agree. When comparing Jojo to Olivia Rodrigo or Billie Eilish, who are roughly the same age, there seems to be a wide gap in maturity/authenticity. It’s like she’s going through her rebellious high school phase now instead of when she was actually in her teens.
Christina was a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice who dressed conservatively. Miley is a better comparison. Her and Jojo are both unattractive women with less-than-feminine voices, and I think with a better team (better writers, better production, someone to tell her dancing as hard as you possibly can while making weird faces is the antithesis of sexy) she's a small scale Miley right now instead of a joke.
The Xtina persona felt so much like a pickme, I could never get behind it. Like what straight men find cool/attractive versus what girls find cool/attractive. I guess that's why the gay community embraced Britney more.
Why does backlash against no longer being child friendy seem to only apply to women??? Like are there any examples of boy child star being criticized to the same degree? I can not think of any. I would love to hear more discussion about this and how it is clearly sexism.
Idk never looked into this, just guessing. But has any male child star ever tried/had to try at a rebrand? I've only seen it really with women? What did Justin Bieber have to do? Did he do anything? I remember him pissing in mop buckets at 16 so maybe his bad boy era started early lol. Maybe it has something to do with infantilization and how boys and girls are treated socially so girls have to be louder about it as opposed to boys. And then by being louder about it, it's a bit cringy because 1) it is and 2) infantilization? But at the same time do they really have to be louder about it? It feel like a lot of people made that transition tastefully. Personally, everything I've learned about Jojo has been against my will and from the little I do know, she still seems childish. And also like a narcissist, but that's another topic.
Go look at what happened to Arnold from 'Different Strokes' or the kid from Webster or Macaulay Culkin! Male child stars cant put on lingerie and wriggle around on stage to "change up their image". They either have to up their acting game or go find some other work in the industry or elsewhere.
@@WillmobilePlusthey get that Alcoholic drug addicted, rebranding in their midlife crisis, like Robbie, Downey, Junior. It just happens later for them decades later but it’s the same process
I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Jojo doesn't really have her own personality. Like what you addressed in this video is so spot on. She's been marketed and presented as a commodity for little girls her whole life, so now that she's trying to be "edgy" it doesn't come off as genuine at all! She's going through the motions of what she and her team thinks a "child/teen star" should be doing; she's trying to give Miley, Lindsay, Britney, Selena... But all it's really giving is the same fake sparkly Jojo just with a black-and-white filter on it. She's never been herself one day in her life! If she came out with something that was really stripped back, wearing less makeup and rhinestones, and going with some acoustic/folk sound I think that would've been received better. It would actually be the opposite of what she's been putting out.
@ville__ girl show it then? Because claiming vaguely that "they talked and got along well before" isn't proof of anything. Even if you're telling the truth and they did have a friendly interaction, that doesn't mean they're friends or that this channel supports her actions. You sound like a kid
After Jojo’s girl group member had surgery she was supposed to rest for weeks. Instead Jojo and Jess forced her back to rehearsals way to early, leading her to bleed through her belly button. Then instead of them saying “holy shit! Let’s take you to the ER” they said “put this period pad on it so your blood doesn’t ruin our costume”
Yes, this is wrong…but, that’s how she was raised. For her that’s normal. I know it’s not right, but from her point of view, that’s what it takes to become a success, because that’s what she did.
Sorry but I very much doubt they put that girl in handcuffs and dragged her there and wouldn’t let her leave. And where were that girl’s parents? If you’re bleeding and don’t just leave, you’re a bit of an idiot.
That’s a lot easier said than done though especially for a child, plus their industry impacts it too, people you look up to, aspire to be like, your bosses, people who control your paycheck and how your career goes, maybe even the parents themselves are asking you to keep going and tough it out, i feel like it’d be hard to say no, plus you never know if they’re supporting their family or maybe they want to impress all these big people around them to show them their special and hardworking, hold the parents accountable by all means but that’s a lot to put on a kid, no need to call them an idiot for not walking out when they’re just a lil kid processing all this, it’s hard for adults to say no sometimes too
13:42 Regarding the actual song “Karma”, it’s been heavily rumoured that it was actually written over 10 years ago and originally pitched to Miley Cyrus, who passed on it. I’m not sure how much truth there is to this but there a a few sources backing this up online.
I mean, that's not hard to believe. Lot's of songs are written and created even cut demos to send to artists who may even record them but ultimately decide to not use the song which then gets shelved. Idk why that would be a conspiracy because it's a well known fact in the industry.
@@annataymond9529two days later and that 2011 recording by brit smith has finally been released and is doing way better than jojos version on the charts 😬
Fun fact: Karma is actually a Miley Cyrus scrap from the Can’t Be Tamed era and was written and produced by Rock Mafia (Timbaland also co-produced the original version but wasn’t brought back for JoJo’s)
Let's be honest, the phenomenon of an adult "rebrand" is a heavily gendered concept. Male child stars may go through transitions as they age, but the way young women feel pressured to either become a 'mature' star or forever remain infantilized is unique.
Tbh I think this whole project is to kinda distract from her controversy. I think she wanted to have her “you hate me? Am I a villain? Damm right I am the villain!” But that doesn’t works when what you’re accused of is not katty drama, it’s child exploitation & abuse on top of openly associate with creators known for offensive and harmful behavior ESPECIALLY towards young fans I can’t really feel bad for her. Her and her mom have caused serious harm to the girls in that pop group, she sat in a podcast and defended Colleen ball inter with her whole chest. Let her embarrass herself
Unfortunately it's very possible that she was groomed as a child. Doesn't excuse her child abuse but as someone who's been in a similar situation I can see how you would want to defend your groomer as a way to try and rationalize the trauma.
yeah ikr this video kind of rubbed me the wrong way. im not a fan of jojo but why cant she be in glitter and rhinestones and wacky hair and still be noticed as an adult? she doesnt need to completely let go of it and do something like what britney or christina did to be considered as an adult, or go completely without costuming and go natural like what moderngurlz said would have been a better direction to go in for a rebrand. i dont know if were thinking the same opinion but i just wanted to comment something cuz this video kind of irked me. i think no matter what jojo does shell always be hated by the majority of people
@@andipanda3787 I agree take Melanie Martinez ( Crybaby and K-12 Era) and Katy Perry for example they wore extravagant costumes and still go noticed as adults
i don't necessarily think that's what she meant. there was just a pattern between britney, christina and rihanna transitioning into their adult images by being provocative but instead of it coming across as mature, they ended up sexualized instead
Besides the whole rebranding coming off as somewhat childish, I feel like the biggest issue is that this is probably a form of distraction from the recent allegations against Jojo and her mother.
@@julesoxana An ex member of XOMG POP!(Leigha Sanderson)alleged that both Jojo and Jessalyn would subject the members to an unsafe environment(basically Dance Moms all over again). They would pit the girls against each other, insult them, and force them to work despite serious medical conditions. Jessalyn even told Leigha to put a maxi pad on her belly button at one point when it started to bleed so it wouldn’t leak onto her costume.
honestly, i find it weird that people really believe this is a genius attempt to rebrand herself, maybe turn into a more adult grown up and taken seriously popstar. it’s so weirdly campy and cringey and meme material. and considering the xomg allegations and the cheating drama and the timing of this whole thing - it is extremely obvious this is a pr stunt. and a very successful one too, most people make fun of her instead of actually talking about the actual weird stuff going on

Gay pop has existed for eons. Older artists such as Elton John, and newer artists like Adam Lambert fit into that category already. It would be great if she said she wanted to add to it, but to claim to invent it? Rubs me the wrong way.
She should have leaned more into being a flamboyant queer female pop star, that’s a bit more novel. Most queer female musicians seem to do bed room pop/indie and are more stripped down.
@@PrincessLioness OH can I recommend Chappell Roan? She does some more stripped back stuff but she also has great pop bops like Hot To Go and Super Graphic Ultramodern Girl
I agree with you. JoJo in military clothes feels more authentic than whatever she is trying to accomplish. Honestly, I feel like the main problem is that she wants to be every celebrity und the sun but herself.
The fact that she did not know who Gene Simmons was when an interwiever compared her to him and that she keeps repetating things in interwievs (like the name of her future kids etc.) further gives me the impression that she is still just a product, being told what to wear and what to say and it is just so disheartening to see. Her individuality is nowhere to be found and since she has been in this machine for so long I wouldn't be suprised if she wouldn't even be able to form her own personality at this point but would genuenly believe that this is who she really is since it has been told to her so many times
As you rightfully said, the whole "good girl/childhood to bad girl/adulthood" pipeline is nothing new. Many before Jojo has executed the same stance, though some more explicitly than others. However a celebrity, who i think is a great example of a seamless transition from childhood to adulthood is: Zendaya💁🏾♀️. Most of us grew up, seeing Zendaya from Disney and then eventually into projects free from Disney. And considering, her peers like Bella Thorne at the time that was having drastic changes that felt forced and intentionally controversial (mostly)...Zendaya's was gradual and well balanced imo. It didn't felt like the pendulum swung too far to the left or too far to the right, making the transition a natural one over time. And here we are today and everyone remembers Zendaya from Disney but definitely knows she's an adult now and treats her as such. If Jojo wants to be taken seriously, her transition should be natural and feeling so forced and curated- maybe she needs to take a page out of Zendaya's book💁🏾♀️!
@@jmac356 she grew up, that's what she did. She grew seamlessly into an adult actress without having to do all sorts of crazy gimmicks like Jojo and so many other kid- adult entertainers have done. That's the point 💁🏾♀️
I think someone like Zendaya or Miley had an easier path tho because even on Disney they were playing teen characters. They had more of a chance to mature with their audience and the jump to adulthood wasn’t so jarring. Jojo has always dressed way younger than she is, idk how she could get away from that other than competently ditching the ponytail and makeup and starting over.
i mean, zendaya is really talented though. so not everyone can do it the way zendaya did. some people don't have enough raw talent so they need big facade and gimmicks to sell it
imo this “rebrand” feels so inauthentic bc Jojo and her management are *purposefully* being outlandish and tacky as a means to distract from the allegations she and her mom have received recently
Agree. She needs to realise she was being abused by Jessalyn and Abby, and later was friends with other people who were like that, and she used that abusive power on her own fans. She needs to get herself fixed.
the only opinion i've had on jojo siwa for the last 3 years is that shes gonna be SUCH an entertaining middle-aged woman. she has the temperament for it, for better or worse
The looks that follows your 13yo style will always be over the top over correcting. Most of us go though that process at 15-17. Having to do that at 21 is hard. Let her rebel in peace, she has time to find her path.
Yeah I agree she didn’t get abused by the house of mouse or Nickelodeon and something that isn’t mentioned in a lot of these rebrands there is almost always emotional, financial or sexual abuse from adults before the image change.
The problem is that she's rebranding to distract everyone from her abuse allegations from the members of XOMG POP. We're mad because she's putting her energy into this rebrand instead of apologizing properly and making things right.
I'm glad I don't follow anyone who made fun of JoJo for being cringy. I had no idea that was going on. It's ok to be cringy. I think everything about this is okay. The only troubling thing is the allegations, and it's hard not to blame that on the environment she practiced business in as a very recent child. 21 is still freakishly young, a young woman instead of a young child. If she hurts people, she needs to be held to a higher standard, but there's a way to be firm without jumping at the chance to tear her down. Her dancers obviously need the most support. But on the topic of Jojo, you can't exploit a child their whole life for entertainment which has always been at their expense, then flip the script and suddenly punish them for being lame, cringy, or socially awkward as an adult... Or condemn them for being evil when they do something unacceptable and treat others the way they were treated. I hope the dancers are taken care of now. And I hope JoJo has the support she needs to break the cycle. Most 21-year-olds haven't. It's not an excuse, I think it's just an important contextualization. 21 is stupid young to those of us who are older than that, LOL. Especially when the conversation is dominated by whether she's cringy or not .... Punishing the child star for shit that doesn't matter has happened over and over again. I don't think we're out of the cycle anytime soon Obviously a different situation, but it reminds me of how everyone was team Free Britney, but now that she's free, people make fun of her for being awkward and weird. Do we really want the best for these women, or do we just want them to be effortlessly sexy and cool? Because right now, refusing to turn them into a laughing stock is only under the condition of them being sexy and cool. It's ok to analyze what she's doing artistically and offer advice, but people should be wary of another child-star-turned-spectacle. Also, why is homaging Elton John ok, but KISS is odd? They're both old men.
Everything you said straight out of my mind. I 100% agree, couldn't have said it better. I also thought about the Britney conversation online. I might be too old to understand but what excatly is so wrong with being cringe? Honestly, I think this video was unnescessarily cruel. It took me roughly 25 yrs to find out who I am and I'm not a celebrity. This girl should be able to try out stuff and fail without everyone mocking her. Edit: one thing I forgot. Maybe this is her "baddest" version she feels comfortable to be. Judging the way she presented herself bevor that's a pretty big jump imo. I swear like a sailor but everyone has their own comfort zone, that's just petty to judge her way of rebelling. This might be what it means to be a "bad girl" to her. Videos like these just make me think the media, yes you are now part of it, is trying to push her in a direction... Again.
I completely agree with you!! THIS is her, those are the things she likes and she’ll always be extravagant, flamboyant and glittery. It might be cringe for some but it makes HER happy and proud and thats all that matters.
@@strohhut_tufi I agree with you too, especially what you said in the edit. It’s crazy to see all these people dropping their expectations of what a “rebrand” should look and feel like. Hell, I’ve even seen in TikTok people saying that she should do something illegal/consume stuff to show off as more “mature”. People want this narrative: to see her destroyed, then in rehab, and a couple years later she’s reborn from the ashes like a phoenix and drops a really heartfelt song and video dressed with a white chrocheted sweater, her blonde hair with brunette roots in the wind while her no make up face looks straight to the camera while singing in the beach 😍. All that just to say she was more fun before. Fuck that cycle.
@citonita2207 - So well said! Yours is the first kind and reasonable comment I’ve read on this comment section. Some of these people are writing about this young woman as if they actually know her and understand the kind of life she’s lead.
People tend to gloss over the production staff with these elder child star singers, especially if they're branded as finally becoming their authentic singer-songwriter selves on socials.
This is such a good breakdown! (As always.) I think, like you’re saying, part of the reason KARMA feels so disingenuous is because JoJo isn’t actually stepping into anything adult, especially in comparison to her earlier content. Being genuinely adult in the public eye isn’t about being “a bad girl” it’s about acknowledging a part of yourself you haven’t shown yet, or showing deeper self awareness of your image. Sexualizing your image can certainly go towards that, but there needs to be genuine, personal emotion behind that content. You don’t become an adult because you “come out” as an adult, you become one through your actions and changes in worldview, which is then naturally shown in the content you create. Between the allegations and JoJo Siwas known past experiences, I can’t help but feel sympathy for her as someone who wasn’t given the support and experiences they deserved as a child, and now finds themselves repeating behavior that has rewarded them in the past, stuck in childhood patterns. In a way, she is, unfortunately, becoming an adult, because the older she gets the more consequences her actions come with, for good reason, because being adult means having the power to heal from past mistakes and become something healthier. I really hope that she finds the space to be a person outside of the public eye sooner rather than later.
I know it's a bit off track and that it was the image they had for a long while but the implications of not wanting grown women to explore their sexuality and wanting them to have a young girly look and behavior is kinda off-putting for me, there's very something unpleasant about that
@@sauronthedeceiver3363 THANK YOU, this is exactly what i've been saying for years now. It's highly disturbing and frankly very strange that Hollywood has brainwashed people ( especially young women ) into believing that growing up or appearing as an adult is only possible through self objectification. Be as sexual as possible so people can look at your goods, and know you're an "adult" and can legally look at you in a dirty manner. It's so fucking weird and i'm tired of this being a norm. There are plenty of ways to express maturity or have a more "adult" image which doesn't equate to resorting to selling your body/ a sexualised version of yourself. That's not what adulthood is, and being a year older than jojo, she really seems to have the mentality of a teen if this "bold" concept is what will make her be viewed as an adult. Hollywood is just brainrot dude.
There are empowering examples of teen girls exploring their sexuality like Bikini Kill, TLC, Salt n Peppa, or Gwen Stefani. This is not it. It feels like sexploitation because the angles they're taking: barely legal, naughty, fetish. Irl queer women's sexuality is more nuanced and complex than this. The development of one's sexuality as a young person is a gradual process unless they're going through some kind of trauma (which we shouldn't consume as entertainment). It isn't about glamorous young bodies thrashing around. It's awkward and weird and confusing. The show Sex Education portrays this well. Trust that the gay community has been rooting for her to come into her identity as a lesbian woman. But she needs to take notes from already established Lesbian Pop artists like Haley Kiyoko and Zolita.
Like you said, jojo has been her 13 year old persona for 7 years. Her rebrand reminds me of a child discovering bad words and thinking they’re the coolest kids on the block. I think she should have just been an authentic self instead of sexual. Why does the female popstar rebrand always have to be sexual?
And also because she (and also her staunchest fans) can respond to further criticism by going on tirades about 'advocating for sex positivity'. Which is what 'women of today' are told we're supposed to do in all cases- conflate 'sex-positive' with 'raunchy for shock value'.
My.problem with these rebrand are these celebrities' equality growing up to being bad. Nothing is wrong with being sexy but these celebrities take it too far. Sometimes, growing up, takes maturity not being "bad".
I worked at JcPenney during the height of the Jojo Siwa craze. If I had a dime for every time a parent came in asking for Jojo Siwa merch or saw a kid crying because their parents wouldn’t buy any of it for them…😮💨
I really love getting these kind of analysis videos that are not just about fashion from you, I feel like you have a good business and branding mind and it'd be so cool to see you delve into this kind of branding aspect more often
Agreed! I love hearing individual interpretations of/theories about how celebrities and influencers choose to market themselves, what works best for longevity in the entertainment industry, and so on.
I feel like they missed the "natural" window where her maturing into an adult/ her own age audience would have been genuine and graceful. In my opinion it was after she came out and when she was on DWTS. I connected with her then because I've wanted to see same gender partners for a competition show since I was a kid. Her choices to come out despite her child audience and to choose a female dance partner came off very authentic and thoughtful. It also seemed like she was growing and maturing while on the show, developing out of her dance mom's full out dance thing and doing well with different dance styles. She also seemed to have supportive/positive relationships on the show with her mentor etc instead the toxic one she used to have with Abby Lee. I was excited to see what she'd do next. It felt like a coming of age kind of moment and she did get some new audience from time period but then it felt like they squandered the momentum and image she had started to create by following it up with years of just being a Tik Tok personality that had so much weird relationship stuff happening out in the public eye. That became her career, messy influencer that kept trying new marketing schemes.
I just saw kaylasays video and I find so interesting how you both get the same ideas yet viewed through such a different lens. I don't know how to feel about this. It is definitely not a good rebranding but sometimes it feels as though women have to sexualize themselves to be considered as mature, which I don't think is a solution either.
I wish her luck. I still remember some sweet moments from her on dance moms… with grandma. She seemed to have a good heart and I feel those things don’t often change. She was such a cartoonized pop star…. Truly a brand, not a person. Tricky to figure out the next steps. Hope she makes it through.
Overall your analysis makes sense, i do think it's weird that you criticized her for dressing like Gene Simmons "a 70 year old man" shortly after commenting neutrally about her dressing like Elton John who is in fact 77. Anyway, it just seems like there are more valid criticisms than "why do you want to dress like this old guy?"
Honestly, once someone mentioned your tweet about Jojo Siwa’s rebrand, I’ve been waiting for you to make a video on it. As someone that is straight and a supporter of the community, Jojo Siwa saying that she wants to do gay pop is weird because she isn’t the first because if anything we had people like Elton John, David Bowie, Queen, Boy George, Lady Gaga, Rina Sawayama, Adam lambert, Muna, Janelle Monae, Rupaul, village people, Kim Petras, Ricky Martin, George Michael, and many others. With those people, they weren’t afraid of taking any boundaries like Rina Sawayama for example because she when she released the music video for her song this h*** back in 2022, not only was she not afraid to swear but she had visuals that made sense that represented her as a queer woman whereas Jojo on some island doesn’t. I also want to say that her song is a distraction from the allegations she has from her girl XOMG pop after she mistreated them.
The thing that really irks me is how Hollywood seems to associate being an "adult" or "mature" with being sexual, provocative and vulgar. How are these things correlated? It's just weird, gross and uncomfortable. A true adult is able to handle mature concepts or topics, whilst not needing to go overboard, sell their bodies for attention that will not last, and can keep the focus on their skills. Never will understand when, why or how hypersexuality or outrageous behaviour became synonymous with growing into an adult.
Abby actually said on a podcast that she never wanted Jojo on Dance Moms because she deemed her skill below the others on the team, particularly her legs and feet. So she fought the producers but the producers almost always won and got their way. So she really didn’t want JoJo to come onto her Dance Moms team because she “would have chosen someone with beautiful feet and legs” but she couldn’t have what she wanted. So that’s how she got on the team after Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition.
Nickelodeon to JoJo Siwa: Now that you're gay and in a relationship with someone your own age, we cannot invite you to the Kids' Choice Awards Nickelodeon to Drake Bell's Dad: Why would you have a problem with poor innocent Brian Peck? What are you? Homophobic?
The child I babysit stitched her tik tok and told me it was “cringe asf” she’s eleven. I seriously doubt this is going anywhere but in the hall of fame for worst rebrands. She can’t even drink and she’s parading around in sparkles, it’s not giving “grown”
the problem is when you try to jump from entertaining under 10s to 16-19 year olds is you end up the valley of unavoidable cringe between them and end up getting neither group as a result. too grown up for kids, too much of a kid for older teens.
As a former homeschool kid who went to public school senior year for those events, you miss nothing. I don't know why it's treated like such a huge milestone, the prom experience was getting dressed up and listening to bad pop music in a dark room with friends. I ate a brownie, watched people dance badly, took a picture and went home. Same for my sister's prom when I went with her, idk it really feels insignificant personally but that's just me.
I went to public school and I think it's not about prom itself. It's about the experiences you make. My memory of actual prom was whatever, listening to bad pop music just the same. But I remember getting my makeup done by my dad's friend, and actually getting my makeup done "professionally" for the first time. And my parents let me stay up late after so my friends and I went out to get skewers in our fancy dresses. I don't think it was prom itself, but being with friends (and family) and having fun and pretending/playing grown up -while not fully expecting to have been grown up
same here but i dont feel im less mature for it. that part was a tad condescending. even my sisters who went too high school didnt go to prom. dont even think every country has it. weird of her to imply thats an important milestone.
It depends on your culture and social environment. In the Philippines, senior prom is usually the last big event before graduating. It's the last time you'll be able to stay out late with classmates whom you might never see for a while because you'll be entering different colleges. Since public schools here cater to specific districts, you will usually go to class with the same set of classmates from kindergarten until high school. It's like you have a whole other family at school, and prom is your way of celebrating the fact that you're ready to leave the nest. Edit: Forgot to mention that prom is also an important recognition ceremony in more elite schools. Active members of the student council and other school organizations will often receive awards (certificates of merit) for their contribution. Some schools even treat it as an informal induction ceremony for next year's student council.
Sexualizing yourself seems like a very immature way to rebrand yourself as an adult. I understand why child stars do it though considering how sexualized everyone in Hollywood is
The funny thinkg is Karma wasnt written by AI tho I think it was unrelseased song from 2012 that was bought by her team either way, she could have turned it into an intrumental soft rock song I think that would have went really well with a more stripped down asthetic.
when you referenced rihanna, christina and britney - you were NOT about to give her that miley comparison she wanted 😂 i love that you clarified she wanted the comparison though
The main problem is the song sounds exactly like the hits she put out with Nickelodeon. Just with some added curse words. No actual artistic growth or change
I'm a millennial parent with gen alpha child, so I'm fully out of her demographic on either side. With all the exposés coming out about how badly treated child stars are, I hope that my generation will be the one to finally let go of trying to force random celebrities into a "role model" position for their kids. It's not a celebrity's job to make sure my child only sees age appropriate media. That's literally my job as a parent.
I hate how some parents get mad at celebrities for not setting a perfect example for their kid when the parents should be doing that! Like it’s too much pressure
I used to play a game (years ago) and the game did a collaboration with JoJo where she had an in-game NPC and I got her hairstyle, with the bow and everything, and had it for like two years lmao.
The Kids Choice Awards EXCLUDING a popular gay child...... in THIS day and age, is truly disgusting. NO excuse. Jojo should've sued them 1000% for discrimination. WHY didn't she? Now I'm just mad she didn't sue them.
I genuinely feel for her. Being nearly 21 myself I’ve been having mixed feelings seeing myself both as a child and an adult for the past 3 yrs, only lately beginning to feel more mature and slowly creating the image of myself as an adult as I gained experience and knowledge. And I don’t have most of the world watching me and mocking my quirks and downfalls. Honestly we should stop putting children in show biz, it’s never good for them.
This is the most sympathetic take of JoJo Siwa I have ever seen. It's important to remember that she's only 20 and didn't really have a proper childhood. Thanks for this video!
The correct way for her to rebrand seems like it should have involved: 1. Wearing understated, mature clothing. 2. Wearing age-appropriate makeup (or none, as an alternative). 3. Toning down her energy while speaking. 4. Making introspective music with smart lyricism.
While I don't think Jojos rebrand is anywhere near successful, I don't think branding or marking yourself as adult is something as artificial as wearing understated clothes or makeup. There are lots of grown adults who wear bold colors and makeup. It just has to fit the vibe and personality.
@@konpulsiv It's about changing specifically how _she_ presents. Someone else might go in a different direction, but she's already known for certain things.
Her acting as a bad girl gives me the same vibe when 9 yrs old kids throw bandanas on their head, cover one of their eyes and play pretend like they're pirates.
I have nothing against child stars rebelling and rebranding themselves as they grow, but Jojo Siwa’s rebrand FEELS like a cover-up. Not only does she have some disgusting allegations against her (she allegedly pushed a child with spina bifida to the point where she started bleeding from her belly button), but this song ISN’T EVEN HER’S. It’s a cover of Karma by Brit Smith from around 2011-2012. Talking about “starting a new genre” of “gaypop” like she’s the first and only queer musician- girl you stole a 12 year old song and made it worse lol.
As I have been obsessed with this topic, I feel extremely qualified to say this is the best, most respectful & thorough documentary & explanation of this spectacle I have seen!!🏆💚 It is my personal opinion that JoJo has had every single detail of her ‘rebellion’ scripted. I also think she had zero interest or knowledge of Gene Simmons prior to the older folks bringing it up to her right when she stepped out with her new look.
I’m going to make an older reference but people frequently forget that Janet Jackson and Brandy started out as a kid actors and successfully transitioned from their teens into adulthood.
100% she needs to release a ballad video a la Beyoncé: sitting on a stool, singing beautifully, bemoaning the puppet strings of her childhood, totally stripped down makeup
Why do we never hear anythign about male child stars and their transition to adulthood? Why do girls always just draw more criticism? And no matter whwat they do someone always finds a problem with it. "Oh, its too far from their original style. "Oh, its too near to their original style". "Oh, their first attempt to express themselves is too clownish but at the same time isn't creative????" Like what the hell do you want from her?
I don't think you watched the video all the way through. The point is that she was sold as a brand, and she never got to really be a kid. Because of her marketable persona, she's still being controlled by everyone around her and isn't getting to mature like other people. The reason why there are less male child stars doing this is because of the way those marketers treat them, which is, yes, misogynistic. But it's hard to find those stories because many male child stars don't deal with it, as the marketers make things easier and better for them.
Jojo was a children’s performer. Like the Wiggles. My 1st grade students loved her and even bought her backpacks and merch in August. They didn’t like her change. They felt betrayed.
Miley Cyrus is the BIGGEST & most cringe-worthy "good girl turned bad" moment. Why is everyone SKIPPING over that fact when Jojo is literally emulating Miley? LOL.
I support artists in their right to rebrand. And rebranding is going to involve some misteps. Jojo is only 21. She’s still very young and trying to transition to a more adult demographic. Now, this complete 180 from her original brand is not working. But she’s just getting started. Let her find her footing before you come for her. There will be some growing pains. So as her audience, let’s do what this video is doing, and give actual feedback instead of tearing her down.
It would have been better if she just went through the casual route instead of switching costumes. But idk, with all the controversies that have happened lately, it just seems too convenient that she wants to “rebrand”. It just seems like her and her team are scrambling to come up with something, just so people would forget about whats going on.
In Europe we're not familiar with Jojo. But when I see that still from the reality show (without the makeup, in combat gear) I see a potential female action star. Since Scarlet and Gina have left the MCU and Gal isn't coming back for Wonder Woman 3, there is a void to fill. She has a camera friendly face and looks like she can handle herself. Just sayin'.
I mean yeah these people can't keep this cutsey persona forever and instead of saving their money and drifting off to obscurity they'd rather do this dance of staying barley relevant. I feel kind of bad , the idea of something you use to be super popular for becomed unsustainable. Its true though her rebrand seemed lazy but I'd rather her go the punk route than overtly sexual.
I really think she should lean in more to the Masc/ androgynous look it just fits her better. And I think she should take notes from Kirsten Stuart, Hunter Shuaffer and Julien Baker. Their style would be a more drastic change for her.
I think most of us can relate to yearning so hard, for the approval of everyone who comes in and out of our lives. I had that issue until my late twenties and realized that life is too short to be trying too hard to appease people who will only stick around if they need anything. I pray that JoJo seeks professional mental help soon 🙏🏽
The problem with branding child stars so they can transition into adulthood is that they seem to emphasize sexiness over maturity, which sells well because adults fetishize young adults. Being an adult is more than acting promiscuous or sexy, there’s more to life than who we’re with or attractive to.
I agree with your sentiments. Adulthood is about learning how to be mature and take accountability for your decisions/behavior.
@ville__ source?
This is so true.
Yes! Definitely every bit of this! I hope one day she takes the time away from the public eye to find herself.
Jesus.

@@myownheroisonlyme5721 it was dystopian sorry about that💚
@@joshlikesfries it's cool. I just had to make sure I knew where you were coming from. It's clear that the Industry has exploited youths.
@@myownheroisonlyme5721 yeah! I definitely understand where your coming from.
@@joshlikesfries thanks.
Don’t forget she was also friends with Shane Dawson!
All of this is fair and true
Too bad she's so deeply brainwashed she refuses to get the help that would save her.
Booooooost
It honestly wouldn't be shocking if this whole "Karma" routine is a glorified distraction from the disturbing allegations against her and Jessalynn. And the fact that she invited Colleen and James to her release party. Sigh.😬🤦🏼♀️
SAMEEEE, like i get the part she hasn't spent her childhood being child but that does not giver her/her company the right to treat others wrong
@@articulatenaila2437agree,besides,her music video is just gosh,it's just traumatizing.
On the other part:
Since you did mention THAT Colleen and THAT James that does clue me in to what personalities her team thought were tolerable at the time.
Child stars are better off getting a degree and living as a pretty regular person

I've seen so many people get angry at Olivia Rodrigo for being a "bad example for children" with her suggestive dance moves on the GUTS tour which is just so ridiculous. We need to allow artists to grow up and change, it's not their job to be child-friendly!
They said the same thing about miley and now look at miley. Biggest icon of the channel

Exactly a celebrity is only entertaiment a product never a role model, these must be your family a teacher?,but
100% agree. It's MY job to be a role model to my child, not someone on a TV show or singer.
@nat2562 Lindsey Lohan was treated pretty brutally as well.
Not as bad as Britney obviously, but the media were ruthless to young woman.
Exactly! I never even knew she was a child star - the transition was flawless
Back when she went by zendaya coleman
She isn’t even a great dancer. She puts way too much energy into her dancing so it looks sloppy. I wonder what she even learned all those years

I totally agree. When comparing Jojo to Olivia Rodrigo or Billie Eilish, who are roughly the same age, there seems to be a wide gap in maturity/authenticity. It’s like she’s going through her rebellious high school phase now instead of when she was actually in her teens.
@@auds_evensthat’s exactly what it gives. I would’ve thought she was 16, not 20

To be fair, a lot of boy child stars very much *did* go off the deep end when making the transition into adulthood.
Mostly agree that women are more talked about but there are also male stars like Justin Bieber

That’s a lot easier said than done though especially for a child, plus their industry impacts it too, people you look up to, aspire to be like, your bosses, people who control your paycheck and how your career goes, maybe even the parents themselves are asking you to keep going and tough it out, i feel like it’d be hard to say no, plus you never know if they’re supporting their family or maybe they want to impress all these big people around them to show them their special and hardworking, hold the parents accountable by all means but that’s a lot to put on a kid, no need to call them an idiot for not walking out when they’re just a lil kid processing all this, it’s hard for adults to say no sometimes too
@@sweetbean1198 in that case, you can’t blame Jojo either.
Yes, there is a demo of Brit Smith singing Karma on UA-cam which was uploaded on Vimeo 11 years ago.
@@savefrankiewhat? No way. That would be more circulated and talked about if it was true.
@@annataymond9529two days later and that 2011 recording by brit smith has finally been released and is doing way better than jojos version on the charts 😬
It literally is. It's all over Instagram nowadays. Brit's version even hit the top 100 chart I think because people found it@@annataymond9529
Fun fact: Karma is actually a Miley Cyrus scrap from the Can’t Be Tamed era and was written and produced by Rock Mafia (Timbaland also co-produced the original version but wasn’t brought back for JoJo’s)
It was also sung by Brit Smith after it was scrapped by Miley, and it’s kind of insane just how better quality that version is overall
I heard Karma and Can't Be Tamed are written by the same guy, too.
Let's be honest, the phenomenon of an adult "rebrand" is a heavily gendered concept. Male child stars may go through transitions as they age, but the way young women feel pressured to either become a 'mature' star or forever remain infantilized is unique.
I think a part of it is that a 16 year-old boy is treated as a young man, whereas a 16 year-old girl is treated as an old child.
And it always has to be super sexual and appealing to creepy older adults. Remember the countdown for the Olsen twins?
Tbh I think this whole project is to kinda distract from her controversy. I think she wanted to have her “you hate me? Am I a villain? Damm right I am the villain!” But that doesn’t works when what you’re accused of is not katty drama, it’s child exploitation & abuse on top of openly associate with creators known for offensive and harmful behavior ESPECIALLY towards young fans
I can’t really feel bad for her.
Saying that an artist has to be sexual in order to be taken seriously as an adult is so disturbing
Especially a female artist. The male ones just get drugs, which I think is far worse.
yeah ikr this video kind of rubbed me the wrong way. im not a fan of jojo but why cant she be in glitter and rhinestones and wacky hair and still be noticed as an adult? she doesnt need to completely let go of it and do something like what britney or christina did to be considered as an adult, or go completely without costuming and go natural like what moderngurlz said would have been a better direction to go in for a rebrand. i dont know if were thinking the same opinion but i just wanted to comment something cuz this video kind of irked me. i think no matter what jojo does shell always be hated by the majority of people
@@andipanda3787 I agree take Melanie Martinez ( Crybaby and K-12 Era) and Katy Perry for example they wore extravagant costumes and still go noticed as adults
IKR
i don't necessarily think that's what she meant. there was just a pattern between britney, christina and rihanna transitioning into their adult images by being provocative but instead of it coming across as mature, they ended up sexualized instead
Besides the whole rebranding coming off as somewhat childish, I feel like the biggest issue is that this is probably a form of distraction from the recent allegations against Jojo and her mother.
What are the allegations?

She should go predator pop😂😂😂
She should have leaned more into being a flamboyant queer female pop star, that’s a bit more novel. Most queer female musicians seem to do bed room pop/indie and are more stripped down.

I agree with you. JoJo in military clothes feels more authentic than whatever she is trying to accomplish. Honestly, I feel like the main problem is that she wants to be every celebrity und the sun but herself.
Plus, let's not forget the allegations of child endangerment and that she still hangs out with Colleen Balanger and James Charles...
What did Zendaya do exactly? How did she change? Did it have anything to do with starring in a rather serious movie (The Greatest Showman)?
@@amzztv04 So she's just talented? Not everyone is naturally gifted like her.
i mean, zendaya is really talented though. so not everyone can do it the way zendaya did. some people don't have enough raw talent so they need big facade and gimmicks to sell it

imo this “rebrand” feels so inauthentic bc Jojo and her management are *purposefully* being outlandish and tacky as a means to distract from the allegations she and her mom have received recently
she needs to go to a secluded place for a year and find her repressed personality
@GiulianaBruna - Indeed. Well said 👍🏼
The problem is that she's rebranding to distract everyone from her abuse allegations from the members of XOMG POP.
I don't think we're out of the cycle anytime soon
Obviously a different situation, but it reminds me of how everyone was team Free Britney, but now that she's free, people make fun of her for being awkward and weird.

This!!! I hate that a lot of women feel like they have to sexualize themselves to be seen as more adult!!!
Anyway, it just seems like there are more valid criticisms than "why do you want to dress like this old guy?"
yeah she has been known to be ageist lmao
Yeah and I don't agree someone Jojos age couldn't look to Gene Simmons for inspiration, my sister is only a few years older and loved Kiss growing up
Maybe she should take a long break. Do other projects that have nothing to do with dancing and singing.
JoJo brings in ratings. Abby wanted to keep the girl Kamryn on instead. But her.moyhwrnwas really nice and Kamryn was very quiet. Not good tv.

me, a partial homeschooler who missed prom hearing about its developmental impact: 😳
I don't think it was prom itself, but being with friends (and family) and having fun and pretending/playing grown up -while not fully expecting to have been grown up
as a kid who went to a private girls school who didn’t go to prom; trust me we didn’t miss anything lol
same here but i dont feel im less mature for it. that part was a tad condescending. even my sisters who went too high school didnt go to prom. dont even think every country has it. weird of her to imply thats an important milestone.

Probably unpopular but Japanese Lolita and Decora kei girls did ponytails with bows way better than Jojo

This is the most sympathetic take of JoJo Siwa I have ever seen. It's important to remember that she's only 20 and didn't really have a proper childhood. Thanks for this video!
The correct way for her to rebrand seems like it should have involved:

It's about changing specifically how _she_ presents.
As I have been obsessed with this topic, I feel extremely qualified to say this is the best, most respectful & thorough documentary & explanation of this spectacle I have seen!!🏆💚
It is my personal opinion that JoJo has had every single detail of her ‘rebellion’ scripted.
Jojo needs to have a clean girl era that's derivative of what other stars are doing but it's different enough from her previous aesthetic
100% she needs to release a ballad video a la Beyoncé: sitting on a stool, singing beautifully, bemoaning the puppet strings of her childhood, totally stripped down makeup
Poor girl doesn’t know how to have a bad girl phase. She needs to find herself and go on that.
I love this analysis and it made me look at points in a new light. Subscribed 👍🏼
It just looks like another costume from a dance mom’s competition. And it’s still highly choreographed.
you sound so calming😭
Such a clear, compassionate analysis - thank you!
Her in the cargo pants, she actually looks more like an adult than in karma
Didn’t mention the whole song is a cover from an old song from 2012
It would have been better if she just went through the casual route instead of switching costumes. But idk, with all the controversies that have happened lately, it just seems too convenient that she wants to “rebrand”. It just seems like her and her team are scrambling to come up with something, just so people would forget about whats going on.
wake up moderngurlz has posted !!!!!!!
woah i am early wtf
In Europe we're not familiar with Jojo. But when I see that still from the reality show (without the makeup, in combat gear) I see a potential female action star. Since Scarlet and Gina have left the MCU and Gal isn't coming back for Wonder Woman 3, there is a void to fill. She has a camera friendly face and looks like she can handle herself. Just sayin'.
She’s 21. She’ll be fine.
JoJo Siwa should have done a more androgynous look
"You're 20, why are you dressing up like a 70yo man?" that made me laugh more than It should. 😁
Whats odd is that Billie Eilish felt more like an adult at 17 than Jojo feels at 20
hmm...
