  • You’ve learned how to find good firewood in challenging conditions and then use it to reliably get a fire going no matter what. You’ve learned how to layer for the outdoors. You’ve learned how to read a map. What’s the logical conclusion of learning all this and the other skills we’ve covered in this video series? The ability to experience new, riskier environments with confidence and comfort. With the right approach and gear, winter camping can be just as comfortable as camping any other time of year. Here’s how.

Best thing I learned from Boy Scouts about winter camping is that with sleeping bags (especially American ones) the temperture rating isn't meant that it'll keep you nice and warm at that temp, but it'll keep you alive at that temp.

@Jake LaGotta I highly recommend buying a Nalgene bottle and then boiling water before bed to put in it. Fill it up, twist it tight. Put it in a sock and then put it in a gallon Ziploc bag for good measure, just in case it leaks for some reason. Stick it in your sleeping bag and sleep with it all night. It is one of the best, and cost effective options out there to stay warm at low temps. I just did this for three nights over this last weekend and the temps got down to the low 20s. Worked like a charm and everybody else I had do this also thanked me for it in the morning. The bottle will stay hot all night long.

I am an avid winter camper, and instruct lots of Boy Scouts on Winter Camping. This is a good video for that (well, I had to cut the coctails part). But, I definitely emphasize the mesh tent with to-the-ground fly, sleeping pad, ground cover, clothing changes, good layering, keep breathing outside the bag, etc. The one major addition I teach is to have a packable/synthetic blanket that can be wrapped around entire system. We call it a "Scout Burrito"....it works well.

I've been winter camping for many years now and after trying 3 seasons tent and a 4 seasons , I prefer the second one . Less wind go throught and you still can manage the ventilation. As for the sleeping system , I prefer the close cells mat over the air mat as its reflects more heat.
    Thanks for the video 👍

Good video but ya forgot a few things always pack down snow under tent ether with snow shoes or your boots it keeps it from turning to a pond . Also use a footprint ground cloth ether nylon or other materials tyvex used on home building works great and is lightweight. In your sleeping bag keep your clothes for morning at foot of bag to keep feet warm and clothing also it takes up excessive space in bag leaving just a small air space around your body to warm . I also keep old Gatorade bottle big too in bag to void in as opening bag to go out to pee looses too much Body and bag heat bonus warn pee keeps bag inside warm just don’t miss and cap tight. Also a silk liner for your bag keeps you 10degs warmer bag cleaner just a few tips from my many years in military and mountain backcountry hunts

Most important tip of all in below 0° C temperatures, avoid alcohol consumption or reduce it to a strict minimum. Can easily lead to hypothermia if overly consumed, especially right before going to bed. Thins the blood and effects body temperature and sensation of cold. Step 1; make a Swedish/Finnish/Just Call It Nordic “Fire Torch” using non-galvanized, non-anodized Iron or Steel piping. Burning galvanized pipe releases noxious compounds that cause thrashing headaches, lung damage and nausea. The last thing you want in the winter forest is to vomit perfectly good food and drinks.
Step 2; do not drink your water cold, and do not eat snow straight. The body uses extra energy to warm up cold ingested water that, if drunken warm, goes into helping your body disperse heat instead of getting that cold water warm enough to sustain. It’s surprising how many calories are used by an average body to warm up freezing stream or frozen snow water.
Step 3; whatever wood you can use for a fire (ahem, fallen. You don’t have time to dry it.), shave the inner areas which will be driest into strips, and shave the outer edges which’ll be wettest into a closest-to-powder consistency you can get. It will ignite quickly, burn quickly, but with sufficient amount of fuel will burn hot enough to get the wet strips dry enough to ignite - which you then grow from. And remember, aged wood (long-fallen) is only dark on the surface, wet wood is dark everywhere. Look for aged wood.
Step 4; don’t eat or drink the yellow snow. Wildlife still gets up to piss every once in a while, there will be yellow snow somewhere..

Well I was skiing today in -15C. I don''t wear any middle layer yet, just a cheap sports underwear and 25 years old Gore jacket is enough. Cotton anorak is good too but it is a bit less warm than Gore jacket, but of course much more breathable. But I do wear two socks in ski boots and a neck warmer and decent wool cap and leather mittens with thick wool mittens.
Trousers can have thin insulation layer and they should have high waist line with shoulder straps.
Never do serious winter ski tours with gloves.
In winter you must learn to know what is correct amount of clothing to you. Head, feet and hands are the most important. If it was colder than -20C I'd have a middle layer, even ordinary T-shirt helps.(But of course don't take cotton T-shirts to long trips because you can't dry them.)
If it is -25C you can have wool middle layer, if it is below -30C you can have a lot of clothing and it is not too much. It is huge difference from -15C to -30C. In -30C you can get in serious trouble fast if something goes wrong. For example if you freeze your hands you are possibly unable to pitch your tent or do simple tasks like closing zipper etc. At that stage you are in pain. If pain stops you are losing your fingers (and toes) and not far from death if you don't get help

Featherstone, Alps, Keystone, MSR...lot of 2-man dome tents out there for $500 less than that baby...and there are TONS of GOOD primary pads out there that are just as effective, and even lighter. The old military ground pads (rubber rolls, or closed cell polyethylene) are EXCELLENT ground temp barriers...they just aren't comfortable...so a self-inflating thermarest on top of the cheap old USGI rubber mat would get you into the R-10's, or more! (the test for ANY pad is to dress light, lay it on concrete in the cold you expect to endure, and LAY ON IT for an hour or two....if you can tolerate it, then it will work well once you are in a bag!)
Of course, you didn't mention the other 99-percent of gear for 'camping in the winter without dying', like fire-starters, tent lights, flashlights, folding and fixed-blade knives, backpacks, water filtration and storage, maps and orienteering, bowsaws, and possibly some addressment to weapons-systems (bow, gun, crossbow, etc.)...my god, you didn't even mention a fishing kit and lightweight collapsible fishing reel-pole!!!

Ha, ha, ha,.. The two parts I really liked,, wool,, I take it to additional levels and layers,, because my winter or spring trips are usually with a canoe (read that as wet feet), and a 7 to 10 day trip is a little one. Four to six weeks has been not unusual. I nearly never have a fire. Dedicated socks, for bedtime , absolutely,, but add to that dedicated bedtime, a cashmere sweater. Sounds extravagant,, it is not. The one change I recommend to you, add the cashmere sweater to your sleeping kit. Annnnd the cashmere sweater becomes your backup if the temps fall seriously during the day. Loose enough to be the layer above your merino wool. Heavy,, easy for a canoe,,, your -40 red zone sleeping bag ? Throw a wool blanket tight small weave army type,, over your bag. Now it IS a -40 bag Swiss army blankets are the best. Your advice is among the best I have seen here on UA-cam. Ooops,, almost forgot. The evening cocktail is an imperative. Spot on.

Tent ventilation means nothing when freezing. All condensation= ice. Out or inside... So An complete inner tent is warmer! In freezing temperatures, a real mountain tent is the option. About 2 pounds more weight...

It is -30 here in Fairbanks alaska right now. It is not cold in this video, cannot even see your breath? You need an ecws sleeping bag and you coukd just lay on the ground without a tent. Also when it is cold you need to stay out of the low spots or valleys. 100 feet of elevation in the cold can make a 30 degree difference. Good video though.

Thank you for this very informative video.
I would like to go camping in winter but I do not want to invest $$$ in the purchase of a 4 season tent. Because it is quite expensive, several hundred dollars. I see that you use a tent 3 seasons (mosquito net on all 4 sides) that is to say that it is possible to do it. I have the Marmot Tungsten UL 1P model
So with a good ground insulation, adequate sleeping bag and good clothes it would be possible?

Melanie Cantin Yes, absolutely. Only exception is if you’re expecting heavy snow loads and/or fierce winds.

Animals do not have hard shells so unless it's raining I don't think we need one Just keep adding more breathable fleece. No hard shell means no condensation. If only I could afford a caribou outfit.

Does anyone know the product Wes uses as a tent floor? It seems lightweight, waterproof/resistant on the bottom, and insulation above. Really interested in a product like that.
