I'm tired of being concerned about being pleasing in the eyes of others. I'm clean. Well groomed. I'm thin and I wear boots with heels and black velvet leggings. AND I LOVE IT. I'm 66. I'm not going to die without knowing how good it feels to be comfortable and sleek. So there! Enjoy fun things and run with it while you can; nursing homes don't give fashion shows.
Also...bad posture will add 10 years at least, no matter what you're wearing.
    Also...I subscribed 😄

At 67, I still love fashion. Being retired, I wear comfortable clothes that are still stylish. I love straight leg jeans that have some stretch to them- and knit tee shirts and tops. I still love chunky winter sweaters too! I am rather slender so I still do wear leggings and jeggings with a long top that covers in the back. I found huge scarves to be too overpowering for me years ago so I stick to small ones that just tie around my neck. Margaret, I love the top and necklace- they are just beautiful like you!💕

WE should love fashion..it is the ONE thing we can control when it comes to not blending into the background..I too am 67..and I wish I had a more casual eye but I end up buying very dresy tops to wear with jeans..

I definitely agree with most all those mentioned. Wear what you love, that loves you. Accentuate modesty. Wear a delightful favorite parfume/ scent. And don't forget your smile.

Margaret, I'm with you - a lot has to do with body shape. I'm thin and my best physical attribute is long legs w/narrow hips; so for me, black leggings with booties and some kind of loose top is the go-to outfit for every day. I've gotten compliments on my look, so I'm sticking with it for a while!

I have just lost a lot of weight and now have a pretty good shape. I did not when I was young. Last year I would not have dreamed of wearing leggings. Now I have the shape that is good and since they are all the rage so now I wear them with the tunic tops and everyone is amazed at how good I look and I am 70!!

I'm a big fan of scarves. They're either around my neck or in my hair. My personal take on the subject is I'm 61, I survived raising teenagers, and now have teenage grandkids. If I want to wear my bell-bottom jeans, I do it. Tight clothes and short skirts are out for me, but I enjoy being a woman in my 60's, even though everything is sagging and nothing is where it used to be. There's huge freedom in knowing I don't have to dress to impress anyone, but I still enjoy feeling pretty. I always enjoy your vids! You're a real joy to watch!!

Love your necklace! I agree about large scarves. Frankly I am no longer happy with turtlenecks and other things that draw attention to an aging neck. As for leggings, I only use them under dresses. But I think that is more a matter of body shape than age. There are younger women who should NOT wear them but do. The key is knowing and respecting yourself and your body. Also great points on underwear and bras. Thanks!

I’m very petite and wear skinny jeans and biker jackets I also have blonde shoulder length hair which I put rose gold through so it comes out a lovely pinkish tone. Also still wear a glittery nose stud that I had done many years ago this is my style I’m still in my 50s but I dress for myself and don’t care what others think off me strangely enough I often get compliments about my hair by young people never older lol I guess for some I am a walking faux pas lol 😂 Your hair would look great with pastel pink in too I’m sure you did it once before on a video. I wear leggings in doors as comfortable but don’t wear them out at all. I love dresses too. Blessings

I agree that we should wear what we like. Over sixty is just a number and if you have the figure it is ok to wear what looks good on you. I have a trim figure still, but really struggle with the idea of wearing leggings. My sisters, who do where leggings and have good figures don’t understand this. Do what you feel good in, but always consult your mirror and be honest. I do this everyday.x

I loved legging until I realized that the black or one color accentuated my slightly bowed legs. I will wear them just housecleaning or something. Also, we live in a college town and they are done to death by the co-eds who wear tem with t-shirts and crop tops with ball caps. Ugh! They are good under a peasant skirt when it is cold or you don't have a slip handy. I am more bohemian, old counterculture, and like funky but balanced, not like I am trying to be 21 again. Thanks so much. I love your channel. I am 67.

Leggings with tunic/long tops are my favorite fall/winter style. The long tops (some to above the knee or six inches or so above) cover the lumps and bumps. I love the scarf look on those who can pull it off, but they've always been awkward for me, so I prefer a cowl neck top with fun earrings!

@@marlyswilliams9949 Yes, love denim. Just found some Old Navy denim jeans that are 99% cotton. They feel really nice. I have a jean jacket, but in corduroy. Love. Also, tencel is a very stylish and comfortable fabric. I cannot do the spandex/elastane fabrics; they feel slimy on my skin.

Let's be honest, most of these faux pas have to do with weight. If a person is slim almost anything will look good on them, no matter the age. I'm petite but currently carrying about 10 extra lbs that I hope to get off before too long. It makes all the difference!

  • @anita_postcards

Margaret, there was a statement in this post that women of color will notice immediately, as I did. For those of us who have skin tones that range from deep tan to brown to dark brown to almost black, a beige bra is not flesh tone for us. When I was growing up, light hose were labeled "nude," which was not nude for me. Manufacturers caught on slowly and began to give their undergarments actual color names.
I'm not offended at all because it is a habit for white women to use the term beige for garments when thinking of skin color; however, I believe the habit is breaking. I noticed a similar response from Vera Bozinovski below. Thanks for listening, Margaret.

Anita M its flesh toned for her and since we don’t name nor decide how items are marketed why even bring this up. Why not take it to someone who has the ability to change the norm. I personally laugh at this sort of thing because I couldn’t imagine being the pressed about the name of colors or marketing terminology but hey everyone got their own mental stuff I suppose.

I love leggings but I will only buy good quality ones in a thick fabric that do not show "lumps and bumps". I only buy black ones and always wear them with a tunic that is mid-thigh length. I find it is the cheaply made ones that look bad on most women. I am retired so I can be as casual as I want. I was surprised at the advice about the scarves but I have to say that it was a good point. They probably do look too "matronly" on older women. I don't know what the feeling is regarding turtlenecks but I love them in the winter and they keep my neck warm.

    • @janaschwehm3059

Lana - I like that look as well. Legging and jeggings are SO comfortable for running around all day. I only wear the thicker fabrics in dark colors with tops covering my bum or longer. I've seen women of ALL ages wearing lighter colored leggings, showing EVERY lump of cellulite. I think that purple is a flattering color for most women and I find a full-length mirror crucial for a quick peek on my way out the door.

I wore leggings in my thirties and more recently in my sixties. But one day I realized they just accentuated my slightly bowed legs, even though I wore with a tunic. Now I wear them just around the house. Many younger women wear them with short tops which is supposed to be a fashion Faux Pas. But, still, some look nice even though. I really don't care for the trend to dye one's hair an unnatural color like bright blue. I have seen some highlighted colors that look nice but I saw an older woman with a face full of wrinkles and bright electric blue hair. It just made her look very harsh. And I am not putting down wrinkles. They are part of aging and nothing is wrong with aging but this look just does not appeal to me. Thank you for your good information.

Oh, I love this video 😉 All great points about faux pas. I am in the camp of not finding leggings to be attractive. I do wear long yoga pants at home for comfort but never wear outside. I do wear a pair of jegging-like jeans with knee-high boots and long blouses and cardigans in colder months. I admit, I do have to be aware and check for the “frump-factor”. I also learned something new from this video. I have been frustrated with scarves lately. Scarves used to be a signature fashion item for me. However, I began to feel overwhelmed by the bulk and never felt comfortable with the wrapping of layers. I now realize that bulky scarves do take the attention away from a clean elegant look. I will be clearing some of the bulky scarves from my closet and keep a few that will come in handy as a stay-at-home shawl 😂
Anyone feel the same about ponchos that have come back on the fashion scene the past few years?

I wish some shoe company would design a glamorous shoe for older women....pointed toe but wide shoe box/1-1/2" heel tapered so that it doesn't look like a block and even an open vamp for evening? Also pointed shoes with wide toe box but cut outs on the top.....and under $100! that would be a gold mine for some shoe company - oh and the shoe has to bend.....not a flat stiff unmovable platform!

I love leggings, but I don’t wear them unless I have a top that’s long. But I don’t really care if my legs aren’t perfect. I have always had short stubby legs and I do not make myself suffer especially when it’s very hot and humid. Women are NOT all like Barbie dolls. Dressing neatly in clean clothes that are reasonably modest is JUST FINE WITH ME. Maybe you should suggest that only perfectly shaped women should be allowed out of the house. The rest of us can just order groceries online?

I will be 74 next month. I'll probably never be fully grey. Just isn't happening although I do have some. And I'm blessed in many ways so I don't have real complaints. But, as much as I love denim jeans, I am not comfy in them. Have always had a bit of a belly, even when I was young and thin, Just my nature. I love fashion for myself and simply because I like looking good. So, currently, I wear leggings on regular days (I'm also a power walker and that's what one wears!). I know they look better on skinny women but I do need to be comfy. I wear regular slacks if not walking/exercising/running errands. Margaret, love all your videos. You so so much to help and guide the rest of us. Thank you!

I agree about the leggings & always have; they are not pants & should be treated as tights. I have some jeggings that I Only wear around the house, with the requisite long tops, and I bought them in a big enough size so as to not show my celulite. I have a couple of those over-sized scarves, because they can be very pretty, but for me, at 68, and always having had a short neck anyway, I wear them as light weight shawls, to get the spark of colour & pattern, without the extra bulk.

Some things to think about . I do agree that there are a lot of women of all ages out there wearing some very unflattering leggings . The closest thing I have to leggings is a heavy weight cargo style that I bought a size up in so they are fitting more like a pant - they are very comfortable though . Recently I saw a woman wearing an ankle length legging under a looser cropped pant - I thought it looked ok and extends the wear of lighter fabrics into the fall . Might give that a try . Scarves are one of the easiest and best ways to finish an outfit but the bulky big ones are for the younger set I agree . This summer I discovered 'TeeHees' on Amazon - a little skin shaded toe covering for sandals or such . Fashion should be enjoyable at our age - we've earned it !

We all figure out what we love and what we do not. Usually what we love for ourselves is what others love. An ill-fitting bra is something we ourselves know about (uncomfy) and therefore does not look good. My mother always had a fight with bras and so I make it a point to not have that fight. I keep up on my measurements (because they do change) and purchase bras and under things that feel good when I wear them. I think then and only then can you feel good in the clothes you put over them....and tights?? Never happening in Orlando....LOL

Always the diplomat Margaret, I just love it! And Love your videos! I'm super skinny and super petite - sadly "tights/leggins" are the only "Pants" I can keep from falling off. My rule of thumb is to ensure the crotch area is covered by a long shirt or tunic. This often leaves me feeling frumpy because it conceals my waistline. What's a girl to do!?! I do wear scarves year-round because I get so cold in AC or cold weather. I have a huge selection, I twist, wrap, tie, or sling over my shoulder based on my outfit. Sometimes I tie it to my bag strap for a snap of color. I'm switching over to my "winter" collection now that temps have dropped. I'm often complimented by strangers on my outfits, so I'm thinking it must be working for me! Your neck is beautiful and I can see why she recommended showing it off! Happy Fall!

Yes, I think there are some things that a faux pas. My pet peeve is strapless dresses to church- I do not care if your church has no air condition! You look naked to those sitting behind you and that’s distracting from worshipping the Lord.. another thing I do disagree with a lot “ don’t wear this unless you want to look old - capris ( longer ones). I am older , I’m not going to look any older wearing them. To me it’s posture that gives you age away.

One big fashion faux pas that drives me bonkers is seeing a woman in her 60s dressed up in the style of a 16 year old. We can see your face, you don't look like a teenager. It's so undignified. I know women like this.

I think leggings are fine at any age, if thick enough and covered by a top or layers covering the bum. Please, no hideous patterned leggings. Don't wear a thong under leggings because it SHOWS. I much prefer leggings to women wearing sweatpants or pajama pants in public. A large scarf or turtleneck works on taller women or those with a long neck.

At 66, and 5’1.5’, I have to be careful about clothes that overwhelm me. I want to wear the clothes and not have the clothes wear me 😊. I still wear leggings around the house and have one pair that is very thick that I wear out with a long sweater or shirt.
Scarves - there are accent scarves then there are these blanket scarves which are great for at home as wraps on chilly evenings or even as home accents. I always wear a heavier scarf with my Fall/Winter coats.
After seeing you wear colorful bead necklaces Margaret I may need to find one (or make one) as they go with so many things you wear!

Finding this 2 years after it was posted. I was struck by your constant assurance that we should wear what we like, which kind of contradicts the premise of the video, but all very gentle suggestions.
I am 57 with legs that have long been an asset, and I have a ton of leggings that I normally wear with a top that covers the waistline but not necessarily the top of my thighs or my whole rear.
Comfortable, and I often get compliments. Discovered the bra and seamless undie "secrets" a few years ago, to my delight. Haven't been able to enjoy scarves since menopause, still find them too warm, even the light ones!
Will follow this channel from 2022, thanks!

At 73, I try to be comfortable, a bit stylish and yet not be a “grandma trying to dress like a teen”. My daughter is a good style-o-meter. I do ask if something isn’t age appropriate since she will be honest. I also have 5 grandsons who want the best for me...one even calling me Grandmafashionista. My legs are too skinny so leggings make me very self conscience. And after several breast surgeries, a more Boho look on top seems to make me feel more feminine. Margaret, I do agree with you...if you like something and feel good about yourself wearing it, go for it, but listen to advice and when it “fits”, follow it. Have a great day💜Pat

But the fact is that I am just barely a B cup with a nearly C cup rib cage. What am I supposed to do? The B cups just don't fit. I can't find an A cup or nearly B cup that has the right size for my rib cage (a 42). Even when I lost weight, I still had the problem. You do what you have to do to keep the ladies up there.

I think Melanie is right about the leggings. I see women out and about in them and in tights, using them as pants, and when you are trim or a runner, they can look good (you don't always look good in them if you are very thin), and I think this is just a mistake. One thing I would like to see is Melanie's tips for women who are struggling with their weight, maybe in the 200 pound range. What do you wear then to look good? Those mu-mu like tops are just awful. You already feel heavy and then seeing yourself in a photo makes you feel real bad. I think that's why women struggle with fashion. There isn't much made that's stylist for larger women. I am curious about StitchFix, though. Been thinking about giving it a try to see what they come up with. I like Loft and J.Jill's clothes, but again, their models are pretty thin. I think I've seen one or two catalogs with larger women but it's not a regular thing. Loft does a better job, but you can't find Loft Plus in stores to try on.

I got a professional fitting at a store called "Dillards'. Yes, I would have chosen the wrong size. -;) Once you get the fitting, finding sales on them online will be easy. I resent having to shell out for alterations but they do make all the difference. I bought a navy blue pea coat recently and having the sleeves shortened cost me CAD $ 30. But it was worth it. Buying some of my clothes in thrift stores is a new thing for me and I've found some real gems. I find you have to spend a great deal of time going through racks and racks of used clothing, but hey it's a workout for the arms!
