Adding a third item to an outfit is brilliant. Thank you for this advice. During the pandemic I’ve been staying inside and have started to feel a little dull. This is just the advice I need to feel a little more dressed. This is perfect. I have so many scarves and necklaces, I am going to re-start wearing them. I’m 74, I feel much younger on the inside, why not perk up myself on the outside! Thank you for all of your wisdom.
Another formula is two neutrals and one pop. You can follow this with all solids, which is classic. I went shopping wearing black capris, black flats, white knit top, and a Kelly green Kate Spade bag. Women stopped me in the parking lot to ask if I was a model, which at my age I really appreciated. :)
Some thrift stores I find have some really nice quality scarves for little of nothing in cost. I like to knit and knit shawls that can also be used as scarves.
Earrings are another "third piece," on the ear for short hair, dangly for longer hair. Even with hair covering them, dangles flash and flirt as the head moves, giving that pop of color and style.
With your sense of color, design, and proportion, you're nothing short of magical, Margaret! I really ❤️❤️❤️ your ability to wear such a spectrum of colors!
I have always been a big fan of big earrings- they have always suited my face and long neck. Then when jowls and wrinkly neck came to stay, I thought perhaps I should give up earrings and stop drawing attention to that part of my body. Silly me! Dangling earrings draw attention to themselves, not the things around them. I’m going to be wrinkly and jowly anyway; I might as well have something shiny or colourful competing with them for attention. Android , a big earring person should never give that up! I find lighter (hollow) earrings not to pull on the lobes, but once again I’m wearing my big earrings!
Hi Margaret. I am well over 60 and love fashion. You are a beautiful, energetic youthful woman. A very fine chain choker (not too tight) with a clear crystal solitaire would be very youthful and accentuate your lovely décolletage. Another option is a 20-22"" fine chain with a small tasteful drop. Earrings, watch, and bracelets to match or coordinate. Just my opinion for what it's worth... Have a beautiful day!
I'm so glad I found your website. Scarves are my go-to. I still have my scarf clips from the 80's. There are so many ways to wear scarves. I especially like to wear dark green near my face as it makes the green in my eyes pop. Great video!
I used to be very much a scarf person. I used to also buy fabric cuts and sew up into scarves. At a point of clearing my wardrobe, I let go of many scarves because I had stopped wearing them. Someone got a great deal at the recycle shop. Now I am down to a few with the intent to buy one to freshen up the all black or blue capsule pieces for the spring season. Scarves are probably the most inexpensive third layer and hence replacing scarves with seasonal colours is easier on the purse. I recently caught on to the third-layer concept by watching a fashion UA-camr “Busbee”. That third layer can really up-level the style. I love the short kimono layer, but haven’t found one that really speaks to me. I’m still very much a cardigan girl for the third layer.
Patricia Muir I also love cardigans for the third layer! A jean jacket for casual looks and a nice jacket for dressier affairs are also good third layers. I am not into the kimono look because the patterns seem to be so big and don't suit my small frame. I am a scarf girl like you but I really need to donate many of them to my local thrift store.
cindy j. Hello Cindy. I understand what you mean about the kimonos. I see lots of them around, but they can be overpowering in design and just swallow up a petite frame. Also, kimonos are not as versatile as jackets for dressing up or down.
I recently discovered your channel and am enjoying it more and more! Margaret you have such beautiful eyes and you are a very elegant, classy and kind person. I am 59 years old and truly appreciate encountering such lovely and high quality women older than me. You inspire me and make me feel better about getting older. Thank you!
Hi Margaret - just wanted to say you are so cool and a real inspiration! Beautiful necklaces and scarves by the way. Thank-you for your videos. They've become my daily 10-minute tea break from my desk 🙂. A great lift. Please keep them coming 🙏.
When I started to wear hearing aids I became concious and stopped wearing earrings.i now have thin silver chains with lots of different stones or charms. I shall try scarves to lift my outfit, you make it look so effortless
I’ve been in a scarf mood recently . I wasn’t able to find the colours I wanted at an economical price . I bought some silk online from Ali Express and tie dyed them white and my colour . Dip Dying is very easy if you don’t wish to tie dye . You can buy any economical scarf and over dye it , even a 2nd hand one . Over dying a print looks rather creative .
I'm from Oregon and so is Stash. Such a fun video, very helpful. I wear a lot of scarves and wear them long to make my neck look longer. All these things can change our entire outfit. What a pretty scarf the coral and brown one you pulled out, maybe it's because you have on brown, gorgeous.
Stash teas are wonderful, my favourite is liquorice. You always look so pretty and classy Margaret. I enjoy your tips and incorporate many of them into my own life. By the way, I believe you once mentioned having a little dog, will you introduce him or her to us please?
I think that with fashion in older women...less is definitely more. What I mean by that is just that many woman I see at church or out and about, have so many accessories on that they (the accessories) swallow the overall look and them....I prefer to see them. What you are saying here is right on! As you were placing the different things up to your face, I could actually see your face change with the color palette. So cool!!!
Good morning from Dallas! I love scarves but simply cannot keep them in place. Even if I pin them, they sag and flop and become a bother. Same issue with winter scarves over coats. Love the look, but either the wind blows them up over my face or they fall completely off. I seem to be scarf-repellant. Love necklaces but I am petite and it's hard to find an affordable necklace in the right length and scale for my body. So I stick with earrings that have movement and/or sparkle. And always, always, always lipstick, sunglasses and a hat if it works with the outfit. 😎
Bright colored purses are often my third items. I always wear a smallish crucifix solid yellow gold on a fine gold chain. I love interesting necklaces and rings but I like natural stones. I love all sorts of interesting watches. Several of them are just $20 Timex. Some are more expensive. I had my late husband’s gold watch sized to fit me and sometimes I wear that. The dial is large and that style is in vogue right now. When it’s no longer the style I’ll still wear it. I love hats and have quite a few. My husband always likes me to wear them, so I did. I also like interesting shoes but I cannot wear even a short heel anymore, so hunting for flats that are interesting and don’t hurt my feet is a challenge. I am too old to wear shoes that hurt my feet! I love the look of scarves, but I must be scarf repellent too. Same problems. Thanks for your videos. They help me feel better about the physical changes that come with age.
I only just started watching your channel, Margaret and I found this episode very "informative ". I always have trouble looking for something to wear. I'm 61 by the way and am from Malaysia. Thank you.
Hey! Just found you today and liked your videos. Lots of love from India. Really loved the scarves , I too use them often with western attire. Keep going.
Thank you. I love your videos. I don’t ever wear scarves. I thought they would make me look like an elderly Girl Scout. I’m going to go to the thrift shop and look for some. I love the way you have showed how to wear them.
I love scarves and wear them often. I just purged some that had outlived their “pop” for me, but someone else will enjoy them. They pack well and give you more options when you travel. I also buy a scarf from where I’ve traveled to remember the trip by.
I bought some pyjama pants and morning gown in the most beautiful print and I kept wishing I had a blouse in this print. You've inspired me to cut up the pants and make a shawl out of them!🙏
Love ur videos, its wonderful how u resonate with me oncharacter &style! I have same scarfs ,same hairstyle ,love same colours! Im Greek but feel we re sister souls! Sending u my love &smiles from Athens/Greece! 👲💟💟
Love fashion tips and tricks. Thanks Margaret for a lively presentation on how to wear a third piece. I like cardigans and I have a dark wash denim jacket that seems to suit me. My neck is rather short so I rarely wear scarves. I have found a few bloggers/ vloggers who give helpful advice on how to dress and what to do about that closet full of clothes but " nothing to wear"! Justine Leconte is one that you have mentioned Margaret. Also Erin Busbee , mentioned here in the comments section. Audrey Coyne is really good and two others are chic at any age , and style at a certain age. I've done my homework! Haha.
Of those, Justine Leconte is probably my favorite. Love her! Another person I like to watch is Lauren Messiah. She is an LA-based stylist and offers a very helpful *free* series of style workshops.
I love that fashion is just an expression of who you are. I’m 49 and totally enjoyed your videos I am also white haired and same skin tone and love scarves always looking for a reason to wear one this is the type of wise quote that only comes with age, beautiful 😁

Oh really lol
I love my collection of kimonos as I often use them as scarves with my outfits as the fabrics and patterns are beautiful and fun!
Mona Kinnel where do you find your beautiful kimonos?
Sixty and Me - I often find them at TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, or thrift shops. For the shorter ones, I will do a wrap look, either front or back and sometimes add a wide belt. Worn this way allows me to add a complimenting jacket. I am quite short and a bit fuller around the stomach area, so I need to pay attention to lines and patterns. If I wear a long kimono with large floral print, I will wear same solid color top and pants. I just purchased a sheer leopard print kimono and bought it in a 2x as the larger size gives a nicer drape and gives me at least 5 different ways to wear it. A pair of black pants or leggings with a black tube top or cami combined with heels and a statement necklace or earrings creates a knockout outfit for an evening out!
I have watched you for some time now...Your brown color and lipstick today are the best I have seen on you
