I was biologically 21 when I was chronological 34 several years ago. They interviewed me at a genetic counseling session. I think lifestyle, stress level, activity and mental interests all play a factor. However nutrition, sleep, exercise and positive relationships contribute greatly to aging.
This video reminds me of the phrase “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Though I’m 40, I’m often mistaken for someone in their 20s. I give credit to a number of different factors. 1. Having a consistent skincare routine. 2. Being mindful of what and how much to eat. 3. Working out regularly. 4. Drinking green tea 5. Taking care of my hair and body (not just my face) Of course as an imperfect human, I sometimes don’t eat healthfully, skip exercise, get lazy, etc.. However as long as I choose better options most of the time, I think I’ll be well.
I think that worrying is the biggest factor in aging. I have an uncle who never married, never had kids, always buys a new Corvette every four years, dates when he wants to, travels often, and just lives his life as he wishes. He’s around 70 but looks like he’s in his 50s. I had a cousin that was a worry wart always uptight about how people thought about him and watched TV news with a tendency to go apoplectic over every story. He always thought he had whatever sickness was currently in the news and was always very nervous about everything. He had a stroke and died before he was 50. I took a very demanding and ambitious curriculum in college and worried myself so much that I developed an ulcer. My dad told me to let up, calm down, and “don’t crowd the batters’ box”. I made an effort to stop stressing so much and, to my surprise, I actually improved my grades, decreased the pressure, and became healthier. I’m now 54, most people say I look like I’m 40 and I have no significant health issues. If I had continued on my former path, I doubt I would be here.
My grandmother just turned 97 and still lives alone and cares for herself ...she does 10 min of situps in a chair (to make it easy for her to get in & out of shower) and 15 min of I don't even know the name lol (she holds on to top of kitchen counter and goes up and down for 10 min ), every day. She also walked 3 miles a day on the treadmill up until a few years ago. She just tells me that she has tried to take care of herself w/moderate exercise, no smoking or drinking etc. I never knew her to be on a diet and we are Italian, so lots of pasta,, but she has never been overweight.. honestly , I think alot of it it has to do with genetics and things we can't control tho (although u have a better "chance" if u take care of yourself) ..both my great grandparents lived to be in their 90s as well, so the genes on my dad's.mother's side are "good genes" -- so that in combination with her taking care of herself, has allowed her to live an active into her 100s.

Aging is pre-determent by your genes but there are other factors that can accelerate your aging process such as 1- Alcohol and smoking 2- Not having enough sleep especially during the night. 3- Stress 4- Not eating enough fruits and vegetables.
Actually the majority of Aging is determined by an individuals lifestyle and not genes…… the biggest factor that contributes to aging is overeating and lack of exercise. And the best way to potentially slow down and even reverse some of the effects of aging is simply to eat less calories and fast on a regular basis. Dr. David Sinclair is the top scientist in this field and this is exactly what he recommends
She looks good for a 53 year old! (this is a joke, I think she's in her mid-thirties. Can you imagine how much pressure a scientist in her field would have to look young? Whew.)
She’s older than mid-thirties. I’m in my mid-thirties, and I literally look like a baby next to her. And you can see by the skin on her neck, that she’s at least 40.

As a comp biologist, the intro part is quite comprehensive and does broadly sums up the process. But the part with the testing is definitely not validated and gibberish as a consumer product. Such method just started being studied in-depth academically, why rush to charge people for something with no statistical guaranteed health outcome benefits. You don't need to know biology to understand, your spit cannot possibly be a wholesome representation of your well-being.
Epigenetic clocks, like GrimAge or Levines epigenetic clock, are specifically calibrated to predict the morbidity and functional capasity of the whole organism. Obviously the methods are not perfect, but they are being developed fast.
Are you saying the DNA in your spit is much different than in other parts of your body and measurement of something within the structure of the DNA itself - which to my knowledge is encoded in every cell of our body - is inaccurate?
My grandpa in his 70s has less wrinkles and better skin than my cousin who is 28. Not kidding I wish I could show y’all pictures, he has used moisturizer since he was in his 20s and takes care of his skin in the sun. He didn’t take care of his body with diet like at all lol but his skincare was always consistent.
She really brushed over the findings of the Blue Zone Study. They do know what the populations had in common, and a big part of their longevity was lifestyle and diet (such as eating very little meat and dairy and regular low impact exercise). Maybe she didn't bring this up to avoid offending anyone or not wanting to change her own habits? There is so much we can do now. There's no need to wait for a magic pill.
There was another Q&A video where she did mention that blue zones tend to have more vegetarian diets. I'm guessing she just didn't mention it in this video since she had less time to elaborate on her answers and while there's definitely a correlation between blue zones and vegetarian diets, there isn't concrete evidence that one causes the other
So the blue zone study is an observational review study where they retrospectively look at these people’s life style and diet in relation to life longevity, however, retrospective study can not form any causative conclusion, the only study that has the ability to say this is randomized controlled study where prospectively you set up a control group vs study group and you control all variance and the only thing is different between these two groups are lifestyle and diet, then if find that the better lifestyle group had lived longer then you can conclude that lifestyle and diet is cause of longevity. There are a lot of limitation to retrospective study, for example, they might find smokers have lower income vs nonsmokers, but you can’t say that incomes difference caused smoking. Retrospective studies can show strong associations but not causation. So I don’t think she is brushing over the study, she is being scientifically accurate. Unless it’s a large RCT, you can not conclude that diet/lifestyle caused longevity.
I have read it and it's such a interesting book. Dr.David Sinclair also has a podcast now on Spotify or you also have the option in just watching his interviews on UA-cam
Professor David Sinclair is the top guy in Harvard University who is studying anti-aging techniques. There's a definite reason why he is concentrating on Intermittent Fasting as a way to rejuvenate the human body. I saw a before and after picture of a test subject who went on a long-term fast (either five or seven days). After his fast, he clearly looked to be about five years younger. It was absolutely amazing.
I will be 84 in Feb 2022. Have had congestive heart failure, genetically caused, since I was 62. I took care of myself for many years before this. Every year, I feel a slight slowing down; it increased this year. The best thing is, I know I will be in heaven when I die because I believe 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4. My inner age is 17.
Presumably people would just start retiring at a later date, so they could stay in retirement indefinitely. I think if you only take out 2% of your retirement fund each year (depending on interest rates), you can do that indefinitely while still growing your money to combat inflation. So people would just start saving a larger retirement fund so they can still retire.
the main reason the retirement system exists is because people lose labour abilities after certain age. If we get to live longer, healthier and stronger then we don’t need to retire.
What we've always done throughout history: delay retirement. Just in case you're not aware, it happens surprisingly often (if not in your country, it has in another).

they probably dont have a lot of aesthetic sense cause it s slightly impossible that someone looks 13 years or something younger. maximum 5 years younger
My instinct tells me that aging is something that we can defeat, we need to change our attitude about it, not to see it as "natural process of life " that we not suppose to mess with as most of people think. THAT Is even bigger problem than aging itself.
I had a good friend who died last week. She was 102. She died of loneliness. Her husband had died several years ago and her two kids had their own lives and lived in other states. All of her close friends had passed away. I was only able to visit with her a few nights a week when I'd walk across the street and make dinner for her at her house and check in on her being sure to package up enough meals so she could eat until I was able to come back. She told me in January, through tears, I was the only person she talked to in over two months. No one else cared. Igt broke my heart to know that Christmas had passed, and not a single person was around and thought to check in on her to let her know she was still loved and relevant. Not even her kids called her. So, no, I'm not a huge fan of living as long as possible. Have fun being old, sick, weak and lonely, y'all.
My grandma calls this “the family curse” when we’re younger because the women in my family especially tend to age very slowly which is great when you’re older… but it’s not fun being mistaken for 15 when you are 25 😖
I hate when medical professional say “Don’t smoke” like this is so vague nowadays. Does this mean don’t smoke anything or don’t smoke cigs or tobacco products or nicotine vape products or cannabis products? Need more specifics.
My entire family has been pretty genetically blessed. We are all rather tall (shortest outlier being an aunt of mine at 5'6), we all age like vampires without any real practices against aging. My grandparents are still fully functioning at late 80s. My grandpa can run and still looks identical to about his 60s. No hair loss or extreme wrinkling in any of us. My older cousins are 32, 34, and 36 and still all look like they're early 20s. No wrinkles on their eyes or anything that could tell otherwise. I'm the only one in my family that never drinks besides my grandparents. Nobody smokes. Only two of us actually workout.... With all this being said... I plan to beat all of them in the aging competition by trying to stay visually 20s by the time I'm in my late 40s. I believe by actually starting really early with the help of genetics that I could keep my physique, neck and face almost completely young. I have an uncle that is even pushing 40 that still looks 26. All my friends that have met him can't believe it.
“The function of a man is to live: I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time” Was thinking about this quote. Very interesting video though 🙂
If you want to live longer: Eat less food, less often. Eat mostly plants. Limit protein. Exercise regularly. Get good sleep. Do some intermittent fasting. Reduce stress.
@@whtvr_clover The ideal diet for building muscle and the ideal diet for living longer are quite different. High protein intake is linked with faster aging via the mTOR pathway.
She says she's tried things to slow down aging and try to reverse it, and mentions she was somewhat successful. Then she mentions she's going to keep doing those things and be more rigorous to try to reverse it even more. So she has techniques that she has faith in, but she refuses to expand upon them even though this video is literally asking what can we do now, and she says nothing.
So before I thought it was due to telomeres but now I see it also as a combination of epigenetic and senescent cells. Why would removing senescent cells a good idea for longevity? I was thinking of the reverse to preserve those cells would preserve the body, which leads to longevity.
I think a more correct title would be "how to not accelerate your natural aging process" because no matter how optimally you live your life you're gonna die within your natural lifespan. If there is a process to extend that natural span then we're really talking about "slowing down" aging.
@@nimfaabubakar5602 If I’m driving 60mph and I “don’t accelerate” it’d imply I’m still going 60mph. If I slow down it’d imply I’m now going below 60mph.

I love videos that talks about aging. I hate aging. I am 70, but I still get statements that I look 10 years younger. In fact, my energy is still through the roof, no medical issues, just minor back pains which is inevitable. I read about Dr. Sinclair's book "Why We Age, and Why We Don't Have To," very educative. There's no point increasing lifespan without. The goal should be to live longer while staying young and healthy. Sinclair believes that in the foreseeable future, it's possible for humans to live beyond 120 or even 150, without the frailty, diseases and disability we now associate with old age. See your result and tell the same experience.
I believe you can reverse some degree of damage by detoxifying the body of accumulated waste contributing to cellular breakdown and organ dysfunction. When you repair and strengthen cells with the right nutritional diet and stop doing the lifestyle habits that cause premature aging, you see significant improvements. You can use herbs to strengthen genetic weaknesses as well. It is imperative to have healthy endocrine and elimination systems, the keys to a healthy thriving body that ages slowly.
Biologically ageing is caused by n number of factors but some are - Advance glycation end products , damaged proteins , stress over time , sugar , no physical activity etc. According to dr berg.

I guess i'd like to know how plastic biological age is. Year over year. decade over decade. Is a particularly harsh year of excessive stress and detrimental behavior not repairable?
Based on what I've read it seems like aging can't really be reversed at this stage, so you have to try and avoid factors that might accelerate it like smoking, over indulging in alcohol, poor diet, lack of exercise, stressful job etc. A harsh year probably can't be undone.
I am surprised that she never mentioned niacin/B3. It is great for anti-aging and has other benefits, but most people cannot tolerate its side effects.
I'd be curious what my biological age is. People tell me all the time I look like I'm around 20. I just turned 34 though. I don't have a good diet or anything, if anything I'm underweight which contributes to not looking my age probably. I try to get around 10 hours of sleep, so maybe that helps a bit.
In Ecuador, there are a lot of people who live passed 100. But even so, quality of life while you're older is important too. Like she said, what's the point of living longer if it's going to be in an unhealthy state? There may come a day when humanity looks back and recalls the days when ageing was a thing. Death, however, is likely to remain inevitable even in a world with ageless bodies. Aging is pre-determent by your genes but there are other factors that can accelerate your aging process such as
1- Alcohol and smoking
2- Not having enough sleep especially during the night.
3- Stress
4- Not eating enough fruits and vegetables.

Thanks for the deeper knowledge ;)
There was another Q&A video where she did mention that blue zones tend to have more vegetarian diets. I'm guessing she just didn't mention it in this video since she had less time to elaborate on her answers and while there's definitely a correlation between blue zones and vegetarian diets, there isn't concrete evidence that one causes the other
What does “low impact exercise“ mean?
@@mariellarusso2268 I wanna say Yoga and Pilates or going for walks, regular exercise with no weights.
For people who are interested in slowing down aging you should read Lifespan by Dr. David Sinclair. He discussed these topics in much greater detail.

I'm curious how this would affect retirement or social security if people lived dramatically longer.
You'll never see all the money you put into the SS system.
the main reason the retirement system exists is because people lose labour abilities after certain age. If we get to live longer, healthier and stronger then we don’t need to retire.
@@Zeerich-yx9po Not necessarily, a lot of older folks lived in poverty, that was one of the reasons social security was introduced.

With the amount of stress I had in my life over the course of the last few years I guess I need to take care of myself a bit better... I am 24 have have almost as much grey hair then coloured hair on my sides, wrinkles and joint pain ... god ... writing it down makes it feel so much worse
Same…I’m going grey at 21
I am aging looking at Dr. Morgan Levine right now
So it means stress is directly proportional to aging
More stress more aging and vice versa
Yes aging can be slowed down thru proper lifestyle.
