- In this video I show you how to slip cast using plaster moulds. There are previous videos on my channel which show you how to make the moulds themselves (links below) and in this video I show you how to use casting slip . Slip casting is a very useful pottery technique which will make items of the same shape and size so that you can make sets of things such as cereal bowls/pasta bowls/mugs etc. It is an easy process and a cost effective way to produce decorative functional ware for your home or as gifts for your loved ones.

Hi I’m Sarah Amos. I gave up my day job and am now living the dream as a full-time potter and teacher, running courses from my studio, The Pottery Corner, in a little village just outside Chichester on the South Coast of England. With Cissy and Charlie, my studio companions, we welcome students of all abilities from complete beginners to the more experienced, teaching throwing on the potters wheel as well as handbuilding techniques.
I love to share my clay experience and knowledge by passing on pottery techniques in my Pottery Top Tip videos; which include full tutorials on items to try out yourselves. I also sell my work via my Website and Etsy Shop. So grab a cuppa, sit back, relax and let’s dive into what’s going on in The Pottery Corner today.

Dear Sarah, please don't class yourself in the 'amateur' league as some of us watchers, your pottery videos, your step by step instruction and your practices are anything but amateur. That's why you have such a following. As a side note, I too used to watch Blue Peter as a child, and then later in life, after qualifying as a Learning Disability Nurse, one of several houses I worked in over the years was 1 of the bungalows that was built with monies raised to support adults with complex needs to live In the local community . It was a great place to work, the people we supported were a smashing bunch of characters and I had an amazing support team to work along side and the name of the building, the Blue Peter Bungalow.. Great video. Thankyou😊
Awww thanks Denise- you're very kind 😊. Interesting about the Blue Peter connection. I've been doing some sessions at a dementia unit- really joyful to see folk still able to connect with clay. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment. 😍
PS I am envious of our fellow watcher that actually got to come take a course with you!!!! Oh if only I could win the lottery! LOL
It was great fun! Shame you are so far away 😢
From Chile, one month ago I discovered you and your facinating classes! You are such a good teacher! Congratulations! You explain with incredible clarity, passion and joy! I would adore to attend one of your workshops some day!
Thank you!
Thanks for watching Heidi and for your very kind words 😊
I'm also from Chile living in Australia😀..I too like the way she teaches💐
Thoroughly enjoy your videos Sarah, found your plaster mould making and how to use them very informative! You give out so many good tips which I appreciate. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful knowledge and experience with us.😊😘😊
Thanks so much Gina. Lovely kind words ❤️. Great to have you along 😀
Hi Sarah - loved coming down to meet you too and loved this video! Something else to practise 😸 hope you received the photo of the pot I’ve trimmed at home and looking forward to coming down for glazing. See you soon 🥰
Thanks Lorraine- yes, got the photos - looks great! See you for glazing soon 😁
An enjoyable and informative video. There is a nice pace to your instructional method. Not too quick. Not too slow.
Thanks so much Suzanne. Always lovely to hear good feedback. Thanks for watching 😊
Sitting in India, I’ve enjoyed this 2-part tutorial. Appreciate your time and passion for sharing. It helps many learners all around.
Thanks so much for watching Jyoti - just great to have you along all the way from India! Glad it was helpful to you 🙏
I have never seen this done this way. Very interesting! When I was a kid I took a class where you took a two sided mould and put rubber straps on it to keep them together and that put the slip into a hole.
Hi - you can use two part moulds with straps as you say - this way is much easier in terms of making the mould. Two part moulds are tricky! Thanks for watching again. Hope you're well 😊
Wonderful video! Again. You make me feel like I could do this. You’re on my list to visit from Australia 👍🏻💕
Aww thanks so much. You can do this! Thanks for watching and your kind words 😁
Your explanation is excellent thank you
Thanks for watching Hilary - great to have you along 😀
I love your videos, you're the reason I'm able to do my work properly because of your technical explanations, thank you really
Awww thanks so much. That's really kind 😊

What a great video. I will definitely give it a try. I’m so happy I found your videos. I now look forward to Tuesdays! BTW I love the designs on your tops/blouses. They would work on clay. Thanks!!
Thanks for watching 😁. I think I must inadvertently buy blouses with great textural patterns 🤣
I really enjoyed watching your video & have subscribed to be able to continue to learn. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 💕
Great! Thanks for watching and subscribing. 😊
Thanks for all the tips in slip casting. I've been given a bunch of casting moulds and yes the slip pails are the same as a box of clay. Just going to start playing with the moulds, mine are 2 pieces of plaster so a little different but same idea. I'm also going to check out your making hump moulds video. You're an amazing pottery and a great instructor on how to. Thanks again and I think my new adventure in pottery will be well worth the effort. Take care and I enjoy your work and videos
Thanks Heidi for your kind words and for watching the channel 😀
Have fun playing with your moulds!
Love your videos...as always great and informative, thanks and best regards
Hello Mona - thanks so much for watching again. Great to hear from you. Thank you for the kind words 🙏

Another lovely video Sarah, thanks for sharing! Sending you love and Caribbean sunshine. ;-)
Hi Monique- thanks for watching again. We have sunshine today so I'm outside in the garden doing some planting - different type of mud! 😁
Great tutorial! Loads of information.
Thanks for watching Sue. 😀
Hi Sarah, this is Ester from Australia. Thank you for all your great advice. (I just discover you)
Hello Ester and thanks so much for watching the channel there are loads of tutorials to try containing clay related tips and tricks. Hope you enjoy catching up with some of the back catalogue. Great to have you along 😀
Love the idea of the multi purpose mould 👍🏻 very informative video as always - thanks
Thanks for watching again Lynn. Great to hear from you. 😀
Thanks for another really informative video Sarah.
Thanks Keryn 😊
Really helpful video. I enjoy your tips. Have a great day. Oh its raining buckets here in Texas
Hi Sharon thanks for watching and commenting. It is actually sunny here at the moment 😎 for a change. Hope the sun returns to Texas very soon! 😄
I actually think I can do this. Thank you Sarah, this is a great tutorial, and video. Jessica from Pacifica
Hi Jessica - you definitely can! Not hard and so few items needed which you haven't already got in the studio. Making the moulds is the hardest (and messiest) bit but pretty much a breeze after that. Great to hear from you again 😊
@@thepotterycorner Frankly, I dread the mess. But I thought plaster was fussier than you made it seem, and slip casting looks fun. I'm already thinking of mold shapes.
@@snowflakeceramics - just be organised and line the bucket and put newspaper everywhere and then roll the whole lot into the bucket liner. It's messy but containable and so useful to have your own plaster moulds. Thanks as ever for watching 😁
Thank you, learned something again!
Hello Heidi 👋. Thanks for watching again. Great to have you along 😀
Wonderful video well done, very informative. Canada thanks
Thanks for watching James and for your positive feedback - much appreciated 😀
Hello, you an expert in slip, can you do hallo figurine with slip clay.
Fabulous content as usual. Thank you for all the insights as well. I am just now getting myself into throwing....but have seen a few forms of late that would be great for cast slipping.....Peace N Hugs sent to you this morning!
Thanks so much- peace and hugs back to you 🤗
Yep, you've got me hooked on the Plant Pods, and, yep, mine are getting more and more whimsical. I think eventually they'll start looking like something from a StarTrek episode... @chermckittrick. As usual, you've produced another high-quality video. Thanks so much for generously sharing your knowledge.
Hi Cher - great to hear from you again. Thanks for your continuing support of my channel. I'm so glad you find the content helpful. Fills my heart with joy to hear your comments. ☺
Although you can use multipart molds… so that would allow you to cast complicated shapes with little to no restrictions (theoretically)
Hi there and thanks for watching. Yes you can make multiparty moulds but they are more complicated! 😁
"Rather than trusting myself to look at a clock, I set the timer on my phone". I'm laughing out loud.... I always trust myself , and I always forget to look at the clock! :o)
Thanks for watching. Glad someone else is the same 😆
@@thepotterycorner Great video! I'm yet to try slip casting. I'd like to make flower pots, do you think this method would work with some plain terracotta pots I already have, if I plug up the holes in the bottom?
@@wendydee3007- yes but Don't forget Shrinkage. Also you'll need to "soap" the outside to stop it sticking in the mould 😊
Thank you 👌🏻
i think i will try putting the mold on a shelf up on a couple of dowels and then it can fall out when it likes and begin to dry slowly
Great idea! Thanks for watching 😀
Very interesting thanks madam but just a question is there a special formula for the preparation of the slip that is poured into the molds
Thanks for watching Asma. The slip using for this project is casting slip which I purchase from my local clay supplier. It is the correct pouring consistency for slip casting. I hope that helps you 😊
Blue Peter, Britain
Hola perdon que le xoloco al molde de yeso eso amarrillo y podria mostrar como hacer molde de yeso de plato gracias de argentina
Beautiful just was given another lot of molds,I'm wondering can you reuse the excess you cut off. Can you just place back in the bucket if casting slip.
Hi Heidi. Yes - you can reconstitute the slip. I put the trimmings etc in another bucket. Just watch how much water you're adding back. Hope that helps 😊
@@thepotterycorner thanks and yes it does.
Love your videos! I'm getting my materials together to make my first slip cast mould. How many small jars do you roughly get out of the liquid clay?
Thanks for watching Scott. Good question. Quite a lot- I'd get about 25 of the mugs I'm casting from one tub of slip. Does that help 🤔?
I'm so glad I fund your video, I really enjoyed it. When you say that you will do the handle and place it when the "cup" is leather hard .... what do you use to make the handle, normal Clay?
Thanks for watching and your kind words. I make the handles out of my usual stoneware clay body which is an off white when fired. Works OK for me but you could put the casting slip on a plaster bat to try it to useable if you had problems. Hope that helps 🙏 🙂
@@thepotterycorner Thank you for your prompt reply.
Thanks for watching- glad it was helpful 😊
Thanks for watching Robert and for the good tip! 👍
Hi, love the video. Can you advise where to buy the ready made slip please, I have a bucket of slip and sodium silicate and I’m struggling to get the right consistency.
I can’t seem to find it ready to use.
Thanks in advance.
Kelly
Hi Kelly and thanks for watching. If you're in the UK I buy my ready made casting slip from Clayman who is my local clay supplier. Pretty sure this is a stock item at most pottery suppliers. Hope that helps 😊
@@thepotterycorner thank you for your reply. I will take a look x
What clay do you use for handles on slip cast cups? Or do you have a mold for the handle? Also do you make a slip to attach the handle?
Thanks for watching Renee. I usey usual clay body for the handles and the slip for attaching is the same. Hope that helps. 😊
I have a cup that curves a bit narrower at the top. Does it need a two piece mould?
Thanks for watching. Yes - if it's narrower at the top you'll need to make a two part mould. 😊
Hi, how do you prepare the slip ? Thank you
Hi - I use commercially prepared slip which comes in a bucket ready-made. The includes a couple of teaspoons of sodium silicate to get the right hydration ratio. You can make your own but it's a bit of a faff! Hope that helps. Sarah
Thank you for this video! I want to slip cast a juicer bowl. Basically a bowl that has a juicer piece in the center. Is that possible?
Should be as long as long as there is no overhang. Suspect you'd need to make a two piece mould. One for the dish and one for the juicer section. Hope that helps
Quick question: could you leave the item in the plaster mould till its dry enough to trim, tidy up or not? and another, As you put a colour in to start with, could you do that with more than i colour, another informative show and tell , TIA
Hi Denise- yes you can leave to dry in the mould. They do dry quite quickly so don't leave overnight as it'll be bone dry! You certainly can add more colours and you can then carve through to reveal colours underneath. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching again 🙂
What kind of plaster is used? Regular plaster at the hardware store? Or specialty?
Hi Maggie- this is potters plaster. Should be able to buy from your clay supplier. The brand I used is in the video. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😀
how do we make handles if using bought slip? 🤔 😆
Hi Amanda and thanks so much for watching. You could dry out some of the bought slip to make handles. Use a plaster bat or mould if you have one. You could try using your usual clay body if it's the same type. This is what I do and dry very slowly in a bag for a few days at first to slow the drying process. Hope that helps 😀 🙏
How does casting slip differ from regular slip
Hi Michelle and thanks for the question. Casting slip has a defloculator added in the form of sodium silicate. Hope that helps 😊
Hi Sarah, great video as always. Many thanks for sharing! Do you use earthenware casting slip or stoneware? What is the best to use for making mugs? Many thanks xx
Hi Debi - great to hear from you again. I use all stoneware in my studio. Earthenware is softer when fired and more prone to chipping. I make my slip out of the clay body - there is an explanation of that on part 1 of the monoprinting set - preparation. I tell you how I make coloured slip etc on there. Thanks for watching again. Hope you're well 😄
@@thepotterycorner I'm very well thank you. Hope all is well with you? That's great, thank you for replying. I usually use stoneware too but I can't seem to get stoneware casting slip from my local supplier so may have to have a rethink where I get it from.
@@debieastman easy to make!
Does shrinking help it release from the mould?
Thanks again. Yes, once it has shrunk a bit it's easier to get the piece out 🙂
Hi Sarah, lovely video… I have only 1 question. The clay you used for the handels is it also casting clay?
Regards from Marleen - Belgium
Hi Marleen - sorry for the late response - I see I have missed this one - I use my standard clay body for handles but you could dry out some of the casting slip to use for handles if you preferred. Hope that helps. Sorry this fell through the net 😊
hi , dose the handles can be done from different clay ?
Hey Gonen and thanks for watching. I make the handles for my slip cast Mugs using my usual stoneware throwing clay. I don't seem to have any problems but the firing temperature is the same for both. Hope that helps 😀
Do they shrink uniformly?
Yes!
Hello Sarah
Well I just started working with my moulds. I used store bought slip but found out its to thick. I kinda thought it was how do I thin it out. Can I just use water to thin it. If you could help that would be great.
Hello Heidi. Yes - you can thin the slip with water. Add a little bit each time and mix. You don't want it too watery. Have fun 👍 😊
@@thepotterycorner thank you
hi, do you make your coloured slip out of the same slip in the big bucket? or are they different?
Hi Alyson and thanks for watching. I make my coloured slip out of my usual stoneware clay body. I don't have any compatibility issues. You could use the slip casting slip though. 😄
How pliable is the clay after it comes out of the mold? Can you stretch it at all?
When first out of the mould the cast is extremely vulnerable to mis-shaping, so you can manipulate it but likely to stay that way in the firing. Thanks for watching
Hi how long for let my mold to dry before slip casting. Thank you
Hi Robert and thanks for watching. I would leave a mould for at least a week to dry out before using for your first cast. Good luck 👍 😁
@@thepotterycorner Thank you
hello, my clay cracks inside molds.. why?
Probably leaving in the mould for too long?? Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😊
@@thepotterycorner im not sure. clay is in mold maybe 15-20mins and starts cracking, on bottom
@TURIECFOTO - is it thick enough before you tip out??
@@thepotterycorner yes, we tried more different consistency.. maybe mold is too wet?
It's not that hard to make a set of six for an intermediate thrower; there is always a little variation due to shrinkages.
True. Thanks for watching Ed. Maybe not so easy for beginners in throwing. 😀
Very nice and interesting, but can a 56 year old man learn how to do this ….
Absolutely! This 56 year old woman can - have a go! 😄
u speak to much
