Monoprinting on Clay- Pt 1 Preparation; Coloured Slips/Clay Pastels/Stencils(Pottery Video/Tutorial)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this video I run through the equipment and preparation you will need to be able to follow the next video (Part 2 to follow) when I will demonstrate how to make your own monoprinted slab. I explain how to make coloured slip using high fire pigments/stain and also how to make clay pastels used when monoprinting. I also run through a few other items needed, such as stencils and combs, which will be useful to have to hand. I have warned you on previous videos how addictive this process is - I find it so freeing and spontaneous and slightly Jason Pollock-esk. It really is graffiti on clay and you can let you imagination run free and end up with some pretty spectacular pieces from the slabs you have made.

Hi Sarah, I found your channel around May last year and you are my go to pottery workshop. Although I am a figurative maker and also help people with disabilities access some pottery methods. I love seeing the results of your and your students work. You come over really well, your presentation...is very clear and interesting. Thank you for taking the time to do these workshops in these difficult days....I findcthem really motivational. Looking forward to your next monoprinting workshop. Take Care 🙂

Maggie thank you so much for your very kind words. It's always so lovely to hear how other people take to a project from the videos. Monoprinting is still my most favourite technique (and I do a lot!) and when I have the time I like nothing more than rolling out a great big slab and having a wonderful time creating. As you say, every single piece made from the slab is a complete one-off. Check out the other videos on my channel - there are more tutorials etc. ☺️

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. Newbie potter myself, started in September. Stumbled across Jane Scott on UA-cam a few months ago (so happy to hear her name mentioned in your video) and fell in love with the concept of monoprinting from her videos so I was thrilled to find yours, which goes into even more detail. Eagerly awaiting part 2, in the meantime I'll order some body stains in readiness 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️
Hi Karen - thanks for watching and commenting. Good to have you along. I love Jane Scott - she's more bonkers than me though 😁. I'm glad you're finding my videos useful. I get my high fire stains/pigments from Bath Potters. You can choose the quantity from 25g upwards so might be good for you - you may get more colours for your money. Just make sure the firing temperature for the pigments suits your clay. See you on Part 2 🙏

Hi and thanks so much for watching. I love monoprinting too and what Iike best is the uniqueness of the pieces - no two will ever by the same. Glad you enjoy it too.
Thanks a bunch for all the information, I'm looking forward to the next viedeo.
Thanks for tuning in again - great to hear from you 😁
I love this technique thank you so much for sharing!!! Can’t wait to give it a go
Also, very grateful for all your videos too! As a beginner potter, i’ve learned so much from your kiln openings and top tip tuesdays :)
I am so glad I found your videos. I learn something new every time I watch. I’m particularly interested in developing a set of slip crayons. Do you just draw with the slip crayons? Or must they be powdered using the fine sieve? I’m wondering how moist the clay must be when using them? I’ll watch the whole set of videos about mono-printing. I bet you cover the specifics about how to use these.
Hi Annie. You can draw with underglaze pencils made in the same way out of underglaze not slip used on bisque Ware. It's difficult drawing on wet clay with slip crayons due to the pressure needed. Hope that helps 🙏
Thank you! You do such a nice job explaining things.
Thanks Julie- great to hear from you- thanks for watching 😀
Love your videos Sarah! So much information that I have to rewatch them. I was just wondering if I am using a darker Clay would I have to paint the background first with white slip or underglaze? Thank you for sharing and I am so looking forward to watching the rest of them all. 😊🥰😊
Hey Gina and thanks for watching. I just love monoprinting and yes, a lighter background colour will definitely help and you'll likely get a more vintage look with the darker clay showing through as you go. I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do. 😁
i always enjoy watching your videos 😊. I cant wait to see the next one on monoprinting💕 . Hopefully you are doing well are you still on lockdown? I cant wait til spring ill be building my very first kiln with my brothers my husband and my 2 boys will be helping make my brick woodfire kiln 😍
Hi Kathryn - thanks for watching and commenting- much appreciated. Yes, still in lockdown here (at least until 8 March but probably longer) I'm missing my actual students but enjoying the feedback from my virtual office ones. Good luck with the kiln building how exciting!🙏
Hi Sarah. I see that it says the pigments/stains are high fire. Would they work at a cone 5 or 6?
Hi Lori - yes, stoneware temperatures not earthenware so fine to cone 5/6 which is my firing temperature. 😄
thanks so much for sharing as I am in the USA so unable to attend your classes. Would you be interested in doing a tutorial for your wonky pots? Just love them and I am a beginning potter.
Hi Linda. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good idea doing a tutorial for wonky pots -?I'll add it to the list 😁
I’m also a big audience for wonky pots tutorial 🤚🏼
@@MoeinPotter okay - sounds like a plan- I'll add it to the list my friend 🤣
@@thepotterycorner Thanks so much. I'll be watching for it.
@@MoeinPotter I think they are so fun. A friend tried making one but wasn't very successful. She will be thrilled to know there will be a tutorial for them.
Suggestions please on where to find the colorants to make the slips. I'm new to pottery but have been dipping my toes in all types of making my whole life. This mono printing technique has me so very excited. I had read that people will use cement dies etc. Any direction you could send me would be appreciated. Thank you in advance
Hi Debi and thanks for watching. I buy my high fire pigments from Bath Potters - they seem to have the highest number of colours at a reasonable price. You can buy smaller amounts from them too so you can get more colours and mix your own. You can buy from Scarva but the postage is pretty high from them. They do Mason Stains but I steer away from these as they don't work as well. I hope this is helpful. Many thanks again Sarah ☺
@@thepotterycorner thanks so much. I really enjoy watching your classes
I am loving your videos! I just started searching for monoprinting on clay and voila there you were... I am searching no more. Thank you! I hope you don't mind...I have a few questions. When you are mixing the 20g pigment you refer to the slip as 'something slip'. What is that exactly? Is it your clay body/water slurry run through a sieve? What size sieve do you use?
Hi Andryea and thanks for watching and your kind words. Glad you found me. 😊. I use my studio slip (my stoneware clay body) just mixed with water and passed through a sieve. There is another video about the difference between slip, underglaze and oxides on the channel if you wanted to take a look. Thanks
Fab video - thanks! What is the make of the pigment powder you use and where do you get it from? I’m in the UK :)
Hi Joanne- thanks for watching and commenting. I get my pigments from Bath Potters, a great little independent pottery supplier. Make sure you use the correct temperature pigments for your clay (either high fire for stoneware or low fire for Earthware). Hope that helps. Hope to see you tuning in to Part 2. Make sure you've subscribed so you know when it's published. 😁
Incredibly inspiring, all of the monoprint videos. I'd love to start right now, but have issues finding the pigments and binding. Is any pigment working? Or what is a special name for heat resistant pigment? Where do you order your pigments?
Is the binding used for painting with pigments also good for clay/slip?
I really love the colored slip balls and the "spray-like" effect with the stancils in the finished pottery.
Dose colored slips is the same as underglaze, or is there any difference?
Lots of greetings from Germany :)
Hi Jay. Thanks for watching and your kind words 🙏. I order my high fire pigments from a company called Bath Potters here in the UK. You can use the pigments in slip, in underglaze and to marbled clay so it is very versatile. Have a look at my video on the difference between slip, underglaze and glaze which may help you more. The slip pencils are easy to make from your own coloured slip. Monoprinting is my passion- prepare to be addicted 😁
Hi where can I buy the powder pigments for my slips, I'm just starting to make potterry so very new to this process, thank you in advance, regards Dean xxxx
Hi Dean - thanks for watching. I usually buy my pigments from Bath Potters in the UK 🇬🇧. They sell high and low fire body stains in small quantities so you can buy lots of colours and mix them too. Hope that helps 🙏 🙂
@@thepotterycorner Thank you so much I have been looking to buy these, however I have not found anyware that seems to be the correct product, many thanks, Dean x
Hello again. Another question. You mentioned you use a under glaze medium from Jane Scott Ceramics to mix with pigments to make your own custom color under glaze. I went to her site but her shop is closed temporarily. What is under glaze medium? I'm not familiar with that. Do you think we have it in the US?
Hello again. I'm not sure what is in the underglaze medium. It probably has quite a few minerals etc in it. Jane is moving her studio at the moment which is why her shop is closed. She does send to the USA so might be an idea to check back in a few weeks. I haven't come across this anywhere else I'm afraid. Saves a fortune on buying separate underglaze pots. 😊
Please wear a mask when using dry stains.
Good point 🙂
How do you apply the clear overglaze. Spray, dip, brush????
Hello again and thanks for checking out other videos on channel. I dip or pour the transparent glaze which is Mayco stoneware clear. Hope that helps 🙏
Do you clear glaze your whole piece or just the top surface
Hi Sharon- thanks for watching. It depends on the pieces I make whether I put clear glaze over the whole thing (and therefore have to stilt in the kiln) or just the upper surface. See the third video on this playlist for the final results. 😁
Where do I get the pigments for clay?
Hi Debra - I buy my pigemtns from Bath Potters. You can also get them from Scarva. Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy having a go 😊
What if you don’t have any colour powder?
Hi Ana and thanks for watching. You can use underglaze for monoprinting rather than making your own slip etc. Hope that helps 😊
No se ve bien, tenés la camara muy lejos, gracias !
