Pottery Top Tip: How to Use Plaster Hump Moulds - Pottery Video/Tutorial

  • In this video I show you how to use the plaster hump moulds we made in the previous video (see the Top Tip Tuesday playlist if you missed this episode). From rolling out the slab, pressing it over the mould, then finishing using the pottery wheel and adding texture from my handmade stamps - this video shows you how I finish the pieces ready for bisque firing. I use my Giffon Grip for turning/trimming the pieces and a nylon scrubby to smooth the edges for a professional finish.
Sets of my handmade stamps are available from my Etsy shop (link below) if you’d like to purchase some that I have made.
Hi I’m Sarah Amos. I gave up my day job and am now living the dream as a full-time potter and teacher, running courses from my studio, The Pottery Corner, in a little village just outside Chichester on the South Coast of England. With Cissy and Charlie, my studio companions, we welcome students of all abilities from complete beginners to the more experienced, teaching throwing on the potters wheel as well as handbuilding techniques.
I love to share my clay experience and knowledge by passing on pottery techniques in my Top Tip Tuesday videos; which include full tutorials on items to try out yourselves. I also sell my work via my Website and Etsy Shop. So grab a cuppa, sit back, relax and let’s dive into what’s going on in The Pottery Corner today.
Don’t forget to subscribe and ring the bell to be notified of when new content is published. Thanks for watching.

Just watched this excellent video again. Thank you for teaching me. I found a handbuilding class-6 weeks starts in May. The teacher was actually my teacher years ago at the Art Center in Spartanburg. I am told she may only give this class one time. Art Center in Spartanburg, SC gave great day long demos but was miserable for classes. We had shared drying shelves and my stuff got banged up. My stuff rarely got fired. I saw one kiln opening and kiln was full of huge fabulous pieces- nothing like the students would have made. So I believe the teachers were just focused on firing their own work!

Hi Sarah my tuppence contribution from Land O Lakes, Florida USA
I really like my Giffin Grip and watching this video I just figured you must be supporting the wee bowl from the inside, DUH!
This has given me an idea of printing up an attachment for the Giffin Grip Sliders that would support the pots from the inside meaning that you could trim all the way down on the outside of the pot. I will keep you posted if I get something that works well.
I felt for the poor puppy having to clear off in fear.
    Be well!

Is it much different slumping inside a mould...? I have store bought bisqueware with rim/feet so i "slump" on the inside!!! Would plaster stick to bisqueware and not release if i use them as moulds? ((i will have to watch your mouldmaking video again!)) Thnx Sarah. With much Appreciation and gratitude. F.

Ps. I have tried hammock slumping for smaller curved surface (i.e. a soap dish)... but it warped ever so slightly... Enough to make it unpleasing. ...Heres to making pleasing pottery and to pottery being a pleasure. Bye for now. Thanks again.

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 роки тому

@@fernmocke7059 - you could put a bit of cornflower (or talc) on the slab so it releases when slumping. Easiest way i think😁

Oh my goodness!!! What a great idea. I have been using the Geffin grip and was only upset that the cut off flew all over everywhere. Wow you have saved me so much time as well as being able to recover the trimmed off clay to recycle!!!!!

Hi Sarah, I use lots of plaster molds (and bisque molds). I put a foot on the pieces on the wheel, either using an extruded coil or a cut strip from the clay scraps. Using the same scraps keeps the moisture content and compressed clay the same. Love your videos.

Thanks for watching Sandra. I use several in my studio depending on the project. Mostly use Earthstone Original for student throwing and Earthstone Handbuilding. I use Craft Crank for the outside stuff like the poppy heads as it can stay outside all year. Hope you're relearning and enjoying working with clay again. 😊

Oh Miss Sarah, your video was just what I needed....thank you for this content... I got some great new “brown bear” clay and was slabbing all day... will be going back to the mono printing soon... my first go was just too “sparse”. I like the results... but need to go a little “deeper”..... greetings to all--from Gosport, Indiana, USA.

Hi Sarah, I just happened on your you tube channel and what you are doing is just what I’ve been looking for.
I am a sculptor but am very keen to learn new skills and pottery seems to be the next skill for me as I use clay for modelling most of my sculptures. I was wondering what kind of slip you use as I would very much like to give this technique a go.
Great work good step by step instruction. Brilliant 🎉

Hi Sarah and thanks for watching. I'm glad you've found it helpful. I use my own homemade slip which I make myself. There is a video on my channel about how to make slip - I think it's on the preparation for monoprinting video. Have a look 👀 😉
