This is truly one of the peak musical moments of the past 60 years and 244 people have liked it. Anais is a genius.

If I am completely honest I prefer the Tiny Desk version. Anais does best when its just her and a guitar. There is an intimacy to her music that just seems to work best in that context.

@@sacredgeometry I agree, the Tiny Desk version is devastating. Her guitar in duet with (I forgot his name)'s guitar, along with just her voice and the other particulars of that performance truly rose to the occasion. Afterwards I tuned into the album and found it to sound rather overproduced in comparison. Of course I've given it some time since then, and learn to love it for it's various and many qualities.

I'm tied between that and the call and response horn section at the end for best part. They're both so amazing.

A landmark performance by a veteran artist, who is coming to broader attention thanks to the soon-to-be Tony award winning Broadway show, Hadestown. And of course, supported beautifully by some of the best players out there. :-)

Anaïs is the greatest singer-songwriter of our time. Nobody can hold a candle to her. To weave her inimitable magic she doesn't need this orchestra, just an acoustic guitar and her voice.
But don't believe me, listen to The Brightness (2007) and Xoa (2014).

She's super intense and a very powerful performer. She really had the audience sitting on the edge of their seats. Superb stuff.

She is so engaging - the power of texture just drawing the listener in. It reminds me of the early magnetism of Rickie Lee Jones. Devising their own genres. Perfect.

Even better with video than on the radio -
contrary to this tradition, faces too beautiful for radio.
(Yet that old Gibson f-style ought to have a 'stunt double' for tunes like this one.)

mbsnyderc variations in tempo is not the same as not having rhythm. It’s a total concept song/album that can’t be enjoyed by clicking on a random UA-cam suggestion and only listening to the first minute or two. I know this response is over kill but whatever, I’m bored.
