Watching Chris Thile play makes me completely understand the mythologies of gods and divine muses of music. He plays mandolin like a man possessed and I absolutely envy him for it.
This is what I imagine a performance by Kvothe from the Name of The Wind would be like...even to the point of bringing the audience from tears to joy in a matter of seconds. Pure genius.
This guy is a gift to the world. An incredibly well written song performed by a guy who has completely mastered his instrument. Watched it maybe 20 times and will watch it another 20 I’m sure… Thanks Chris!
The guy who goes "aahhh" one second after the (magnificent) last note. That guy. He's been paying attention. "aahhh" Wonderful ending, wonderful song, fantastic playing and singing, and a great audience.
I've been coming back to this video for years. It was genius to transition from Another New World into the Bach partita. It really helps soften the edge from such a painful song. The former makes the latter more beautiful and emotive.
Just came back to it again myself. Someone uploaded a reading of the Annabel Lee and I remembered this video and hunted it down. It’s been 3 years. Time for you to give this another listen. A well spent 10 minutes.
KT Rob I saw him when he did the reunion tour and album with nickel Creek.... They were better than their album. But my fav is punch brothers and I've never saw them but I really wanna.
Go Bucks I saw Punch Brothers once and it was amazing! I’m always astonished how each member is always on the same page as the rest. Their timing, even with really complex pieces, is amazing.
I love how the Partita sounds on the mandolin as opposed to the violin. and I also love how he's doing it 100% from memory, wistfully Thile-gazing into the audience as he plays.
how can he not look at his finger placement on his mandolin during his solo at 3:27? Seriously.. that's insane.. One of the best musicians in the world.
I love that after playing something immense and heavy and sad, Chris sort of apologizes for it with a bit of impressive but humorous playing. Like, "Okay I made you cry a little so here's me shredding some classic stuff."
The second solo, roughly around 6:30, so invocative of a terrible sea gale, painfully cold and blinding in white ice. Really brings you into the story.
I totally agree. I am so grateful this was posted. I think this might be the best solo I have heard from Thile. Thank God we live in a time where recordings are so easily made. We are all super lucky this dude made the decision to record this!
Oh my word! This has been one of my favorite songs since I first heard it in November and this version is hands down the best I have ever heard. So haunting and beautiful!
Chris Thile is Absolutely the best mandolin player in the entire world! Freakishly and delightfully beautiful performance. This Lloyd Loar is singing with joy for his majestic love of music.
This song was always in the back of my head as I watched ‘The Terror’. As the sea turned the color of sky turned the color of sea turned the color of ice. That’s the line.
I have to say, I like this version much better than Josh's. I'm sure that most wouldn't agree, but Chris's timing, voice and overall telling of the poem is better. I will give Josh props for coming up with a deep side story to Poe's poem. Although, with Poe, he made it more vague until the very end that Annabel Lee was a ship and not a woman. Great song writing by Josh and excellent performances by both!
Josh Ritter's track is one entity, Punch Brothers performing the song is another entity, and Chris Thile performing this song solo and throwing in Bach is an entity unto itself as well.
***** There are covers are just a lesser version of the same entity, like the Counting Crows cover of Big Yellow Taxi. Then there are covers that overshadow the original, an enhancement of the original entity, like Blue Suede Shoes by Carl Perkins and the cover by Elvis Presley. Then there are covers that are strong but the original is also strong enough to coexist with it, two separate but equally worthy entities, like Hurt by Nine Inch Nails and the cover by Johnny Cash or Crying by Roy Orbison and the cover by KD Lang. More words to impress you. Don't forget to comment on my knowledge of musicology as well as my vocabulary.
***** You're welcome. Thank you for once again using more words than my original post to explain how my original post could be shorter. I'm sure fans of Chris Thile, Josh Ritter, mandolin, Bach, or any of the other elements of this video feel much enlightened by your contribution.
***** Yes, Chris Thile fans are indeed "hear" because we know more about music than the average Joe. Perhaps you could say something about Chris Thile's music. Based on your previous comments I'm expecting wordy oversimplifications and unrequested assessments of intelligence, but hope springs eternal.
I love this song... I actually love to play it double or 1.5 time to hear some of the patterns in the music that are lost in the slow tempo of the song initially. Can't wait to see him in the Goat Rodeo Sessions this summer!
Watching Chris Thile play makes me completely understand the mythologies of gods and divine muses of music. He plays mandolin like a man possessed and I absolutely envy him for it.
This is my favorite performance of anything ever.
This is what I imagine a performance by Kvothe from the Name of The Wind would be like...even to the point of bringing the audience from tears to joy in a matter of seconds. Pure genius.
Remy Welch what a brilliant reference, Chris Thile already has his pipes to be sure
That was my exact thought too! Chris Thile is definitely Edema Ruh.
Holy shit yes!
This comment just amplified my love for both the books and chris thile!
Spot on!
This guy is a gift to the world. An incredibly well written song performed by a guy who has completely mastered his instrument. Watched it maybe 20 times and will watch it another 20 I’m sure…
Thanks Chris!
Same here played this at least a dozen times this week. Chris is so good
The line "And I won't call it rescue" makes the song for me. Absolutely heart wrenching love story.
Dash Nesbitt Yes, and the lines that immediately follow
@xut_the_shit 02 Another beautiful line
Absolutely

The guy who goes "aahhh" one second after the (magnificent) last note.
That guy.
He's been paying attention.
"aahhh"
Wonderful ending, wonderful song, fantastic playing and singing, and a great audience.
Oskar Förberg time of the ahh?
...one second after the last note
10:11
i just couldn't help myself.. pure joy....
True music lover, you are
You can't reasonably expect music to get much better than this.
oh yes you can .... punch brothers !!!!!
Give this man his pipes!

Old Worlds were once New Worlds and, sometimes, Old Worlds can be made New Worlds.
I love this man more than words can express.
Same. I'd follow him to the Arctic and back.
How has this only 360k views? I've watched it at least that many times on my own...
History will remember Chris Thile as one of the greats. I feel privileged to have seen him perform. I hope to see him on many more occasions.

I come back to this video about once or twice a year. This is one of my favorite performances of all time.
Yep, here I am again.
I must agree!
Back again
I come back to this video once a month.
Here again
sometimes watching very talented musicians makes me feel jelous, when i watch chris thile i feel nothing but joy. And Hope.
I'm so glad he sightly flubs that note at 9:16 so we know he is actually a human being
how can he not look at his finger placement on his mandolin during his solo at 3:27? Seriously.. that's insane.. One of the best musicians in the world.
Stephen Bradshaw in the history of ever even
I love that after playing something immense and heavy and sad, Chris sort of apologizes for it with a bit of impressive but humorous playing. Like, "Okay I made you cry a little so here's me shredding some classic stuff."
I love Josh Ritter and this song is one of my favorites. A cover by the amazing Chis Thile? What a perfect combination.
Josh Ritter writes songs like authors write novels.
@@WtfUA-cam_YouSuck heard
I bet I have listened to this song at least 500 times...thank you for sharing, Robert!
haha me too! :)
YES.
A compelling story about explorers dying in a storm and a Bachasm. All on one tiny instrument. In an irish pub.
Respect.
All held captive.
The song is about cheating on your girlfriend, Chris Thile's favorite topic.
The prelude to the transition into Bach was so incredibly seamless. There's a reason he got a McArthur genius Grant
Only one Chris can ever exist.Lucky us.
most beautiful mandolin solo ever
The second solo, roughly around 6:30, so invocative of a terrible sea gale, painfully cold and blinding in white ice. Really brings you into the story.
this video is so important to me.
WOW! WOW! W-O-W!!!! Someone pick my jaw off the floor! Haunting, so beautiful, ethereal. This man is ingenious.
At 33, it's possible that I've never seen a more moving solo performance. He is not human.
I've listened to this like 5 times in a row.
And every time, I'm convinced my phone is ringing in the distance at 2:20...
the solo at 3:27 is astonishing
This is why he's one of the greatest musicians in the world today!
He looks like he is having a seizure though
FUCKYOURSELF GOOGLE who cares, it's perfect
I totally agree. I am so grateful this was posted. I think this might be the best solo I have heard from Thile. Thank God we live in a time where recordings are so easily made. We are all super lucky this dude made the decision to record this!
@@KyleHurd He is also the most accurate bobble head doll.
Probably the greatest performance of all time, in my eyes.
Starting around 6:57 you can hear a Bach piece: Violin Partita No.3 in E Major, BWV 1006: I. Prelude
+Weird Beard That's why they laugh ;^)
It really is almost impossible to believe that anyone could be this great just doing his job.... a true master at his craft.💛🎶
This is the peak of music
Mr. Thile should win a Grammy for this performance.
I went to see him tonight in chapel hill tonight. He is phenomenal. Funny as hell too.
He is a different performer solo. Everyone should see him in that format; I've had the same blessing. Glad you enjoyed it so much, Grady.
Sends chills down my spine..pure gold
One of Thile's greatest solos. It may even have been improvised.
This guy is quite simply astounding, in so many genres.
When I saw this I died because my life was now complete. Then his solo brought me back to life.
Oh my word! This has been one of my favorite songs since I first heard it in November and this version is hands down the best I have ever heard. So haunting and beautiful!
What an amazing creature, Mr. Thile is.
You don't get to be THAT good without thoroughly enjoying it.
Greatest musician of our era IMO
I remember seeing him wow the people at the campground when he was only around 11 years old at the telluride bluegrass festival..
What an awesome memory that is to have! I discovered him in 1999 I think.
That man's "ugh." of astonishment at 10:10 is what I was doing about every ten seconds throughout.
This is stunning, just stunning.
Chris Thile is my hero. This made me tear up no joke
To have been in that live audience must have been memorable. Really this is more than a song. It is a theatre piece.
Probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written
Unbelievable.
And that perfect harmonic at 2:07 -ish to finish the first solo... O.O
He is so good!! Ethereal, other-worldly good!!! I could just cry listening to this.
There is no better rendition of this song
true musicianship is being able to pour your heart in the moments notice. this dude tours and makes moments like this
I believe this confirms that Chris Thile is an alien. No way that kind of music comes from a human being.
a modern love stort with timeless lines. incredible!
NICE !!!! Josh would love this !
Hope everybody made it to the party!(da) Josh Ritter, what a composer!
Chris Thile is Absolutely the best mandolin player in the entire world! Freakishly and delightfully beautiful performance. This Lloyd Loar is singing with joy for his majestic love of music.
This is ten minutes of heavenly music! Thank you so much for sharing it.
This video should have 12 million views, not 12 thousand.
Just saw Josh Ritter, recognized the song because of this video. Soooo goooood.
Holy Cow! Breathtaking!
Otherworldly.
A sublime 10:15.
another worldly
This song was always in the back of my head as I watched ‘The Terror’.
As the sea turned the color of sky

That’s the line.
Greg Day you get it. That’s the line.
I am blown away- more so by the beautiful responses people have posted. This is Love.!
...because when you haven't already open-jaw wowed the audience enough for seven minutes, there's always Bach.
He's a romantic.
@@WtfUA-cam_YouSuck He's utterly delicious.

is it hard going through life as a douche or is it just so natural to you that it doesn't even phase you anymore?
I love watching this guy perform.
cant believe i missed this!!
lucky to catch the punch brothers in 2012 it was amazing!
2018. Who's coming around here to listen?
le plus grand instrumentiste de notre epoque... Il vous laisse sans voix... Prodigieux
every time I watch this I think how is this even real
Some people make music, but Chris Thile IS music.
The pairing of "Another New World" with that Bach Partita works so well.
Possibly the most beautifully sad song I've ever heard.
Oj tak byczku !! +1 wielkie kurdeee ,aleeez melodiaaaa
A beautiful song covered beautifully! 👏🏻
Magnifique!
Absolutely in awe
Divine performer.
outstanding
Stunning.
He’s only gotten better since then!
He is brilliant.
Totally brilliant.
The power at 4:14 is insane
Wow, he is absurdly good.
uh...no. he's the finest there ever was.
Unbelievable brilliant! nothing less...
I've been playing the guitar for decades but I'm buying a mandolin tomorrow because of Chris. This is too good to not give it a try myself.
Amazing! Love his voice as well!
I feel like if I moved around that much during a crazy solo it'd just mess me up lol :p
Could be the greatest song ever written.
This is fantastic. Loved every second.
I love this song... I actually love to play it double or 1.5 time to hear some of the patterns in the music that are lost in the slow tempo of the song initially.
Can't wait to see him in the Goat Rodeo Sessions this summer!
great video! what an eerie but beautiful song.
Okay....NOBODY needs to be that good. I'm stunned. Jesse Ferguson said this guy was his favorite mando player but I had no idea!
he's enjoying himself, and it sounds good. wow
Thank you.
I got a Genshin impact add at 6:19 and nearly threw my phone
La chanson la plus émouvante du nouveau EP !
