Lyrics: Janet sits in her lonely room Sewing a silken seam And looking out on Carterhaugh Among the roses green And Janet sits in her lonely bower Sewing a silken thread And longed to be in Carterhaugh Among the roses red She's let the seam fall at her heel The needle to her toe And she has gone to Carterhaugh As fast as she can go She hadn't pulled a rose, a rose A rose, but only one When then appeared him, young Tamlin Says, "Lady, let alone" "What makes you pull the rose, the rose? What makes you break the tree? What makes you come to Carterhaugh Without the leave of me?" "But Carterhaugh is not your own Roses there are many I'll come and go all as I please And not ask leave of any" And he has took her by the hand Took her by the sleeve And he has laid this lady down Among the roses green And he has took her by the arm Took her by the hem And he has laid this lady down Among the roses red There's four and twenty ladies fair Sewing at the silk And Janet goes among them all Her face as pale as milk And four and twenty gentlemen Playing at the chess And Janet goes among them all As green as any glass Then up and spoke her father He's spoken meek and mild "Oh, alas, my daughter I fear you go with child" "And is it to a man of might Or to a man of means Or who among my gentlemen Shall give the babe his name?" "Oh, father, if I go with child This much to you I'll tell There's none among your gentlemen That I would treat so well" "And, father, if I go with child I must bear the blame There's none among your gentlemen Shall give the babe his name" She's let the seam fall at her heel The needle to her toe And she has gone to Carterhaugh As fast as she can go And she is down among the weeds Down among the thorn When then appeared Tamlin again Says, "Lady, pull no more" "What makes you pull the poison rose? What makes you break the tree? What makes you harm the little babe That I have got with thee?" "Oh I will pull the rose, Tamlin I will break the tree But I'll not bear the little babe That you have got with me" "If he were to a gentleman And not a wild shade I'd rock him all the winter's night And all the summer's day" "Then take me back into your arms If you my love would win And hold me tight and fear me not I'll be a gentleman" "But first I'll change all in your arms Into a wild wolf But hold me tight and fear me not I am your own true love" "And then I'll change all in your arms Into a wild bear But hold me tight and fear me not I am your husband dear" "And then I'll change all in your arms Into a lion bold But hold me tight and fear me not And you will love your child" At first he changed all in her arms Into a wild wolf She held him tight and feared him not He was her own true love And then he changed all in her arms Into a wild bear She held him tight and feared him not He was her husband dear And then he changed all in her arms Into a lion bold She held him tight and feared him not The father of her child And then he changed all in her arms Into a naked man She's wrapped him in her coat so warm And she has brought him home
ANY ONE GOT CHORDS for this version ? (for guitar) I've sung (And known) a whole other version for a couple decades... the more original I guess. But this is a nice modern twist......
This performance is truly "magical"... the chemistry between them is palpable, and the blending of voice and guitar is sublime. If this does not move you on several levels, then you should worry - and i feel sad for you.
It's a really special arrangement and performance, and it's also a tremendous tale, where the female character drives the story, and is the most brave, and breaks the bonds of her society to chase her love. This version changes the lyrics to make that slightly less clear, and the fairy queen also doesn't feature.
@@wdirtymonkey True, but the heart of the song is, as with all the versions, her courage and steadfast faithfulness. "She held him tight and feared him not". These guys, though...good taste in tunes, their voices go amazingly well together and their guitar work is really exceptional. Ms. Mitchell contributes a lot more than just "fingerpicked rhythm" and his leads or breaks add more to the song than to his own reputation. Which is perfect (see Kagey Parrish of the Honey Dew Drops for wonderfully tasteful folk duet guitar that adds so much to the songs without showiness or flash.)
I"m listening to this over and over so I'll stop listening to their version of "Geordie" over and over. It's all good. Better than good, they're amazing.
Really great mix of voices. Their Child Ballads album is incredible. Too bad they've gone their separate ways. Her voice is so special, as his guitar playing.
My Anais Mitchell spotify radio has been turned into musical theatre radio due to Hadestown. I love Hadestown, and I love musical theater, but I want Anais Mitchell radio to be more of THIS. Anyone else have this problem.
Loved their other live version of this so much, but this is just as magical and sublime; they are so in synch with each other and the result is transcendently beautiful.
i know everyone keeps saying this but they work so so well together. the mingling of their voices creates all these amazing layers that simultaneously forms a perfect union. i don't even understand it. it's breathtaking.
Have been looking for songs relate to Tam Lin and found this! What an amazing blend of voices. This version is different than what I've ever heard but I love it and I love them. I can listen over and over and never tire of it. Thank you!
This is so ...awesome I've been listening it on repeat. I don't really know why, but it seriously nearly brings me to tears. It's just so perfect and beautiful.
I heard this song for the first time maybe a year ago and I have to listen to it like at least every month since. So beautiful. I hear it in my head all the time and feel like I've been transported to 18th century Scotland. Beautiful!!!
Anais Mitchell is simply stunning. I remember listening to Hadestown when it first came out and it took me two weeks to listen to it completely because every song was just so wonderful I could not stop listening to it. When I eventually came to the last song I literally cried because it felt like a journey had just ended. Wow, such a corny comment :D But it's true. I absolutely love how Jefferson's and her voices go together. So soothing.
Jefferson Hamer's work on Sarah Jarosz's album "Blue Heron Suite" is so fantastically good, as is the whole album in general. It's definitely my favorite folk/americana album to come out this millennium. The "Child Ballads" album from Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer is also a fantastic album. I wish they'd do a follow up album of more Child Ballad songs. There's certainly plenty to choose from that they could play. "Sir Patrick Spens" & this song are the top songs from that album.
This is the most amazing Analgised version I have ever heard. Well done!! Athough it veries from the classical Glasgow reel - I like this so very much. thank you for pouring your hearts into it.
I really don't have a favorite per se. All I can say is that I have listened to several different artists on your channel and I like them all. Although, of the sessions I have listened to so far, I am rather fond of Anais & Jefferson and John Smith. Al Lewis-Blackbird and the magpie, is a great tune as well.
At first I thought it was like watching Neil Young sing a duet with a reincarnated Karen Carpenter. But their harmony is so spot on, it's more like the early Simon and Garfunkel.
?? "overly arranged"?? It's two voices and two guitars, it cannot be overly arranged. It can be perfect, and arguably is, whether it's "better" than any other version or not, but that's a matter of taste.
I don’t know how I got here, but I can’t leave...
I'm trapped here, too. One month now. Could be worse.
When I first heard this. I could not clear it from my mind for weeks... it is wonderful, a magic song that lifts the heart
Same here this is a great song
Did you look up their other Child Ballads yet?
@@davelissauer1943 I have listened to some more, but, it is Tam Lin that holds me
Willie of Winsbury at the Folk Awards is gorgeous too. Oh so many.
is it OK to get so emotional , you cry , music always does it.
Lyrics:
Janet sits in her lonely room
Sewing a silken seam
And looking out on Carterhaugh
Among the roses green
And Janet sits in her lonely bower
Sewing a silken thread
And longed to be in Carterhaugh
Among the roses red
She's let the seam fall at her heel
The needle to her toe
And she has gone to Carterhaugh
As fast as she can go
She hadn't pulled a rose, a rose
A rose, but only one
When then appeared him, young Tamlin
Says, "Lady, let alone"
"What makes you pull the rose, the rose?
What makes you break the tree?
What makes you come to Carterhaugh
Without the leave of me?"
"But Carterhaugh is not your own
Roses there are many
I'll come and go all as I please
And not ask leave of any"
And he has took her by the hand
Took her by the sleeve
And he has laid this lady down
Among the roses green
And he has took her by the arm
Took her by the hem
And he has laid this lady down
Among the roses red
There's four and twenty ladies fair
Sewing at the silk
And Janet goes among them all
Her face as pale as milk
And four and twenty gentlemen
Playing at the chess
And Janet goes among them all
As green as any glass
Then up and spoke her father
He's spoken meek and mild
"Oh, alas, my daughter
I fear you go with child"
"And is it to a man of might
Or to a man of means
Or who among my gentlemen
Shall give the babe his name?"
"Oh, father, if I go with child
This much to you I'll tell
There's none among your gentlemen
That I would treat so well"
"And, father, if I go with child
I must bear the blame
There's none among your gentlemen
Shall give the babe his name"
She's let the seam fall at her heel
The needle to her toe
And she has gone to Carterhaugh
As fast as she can go
And she is down among the weeds
Down among the thorn
When then appeared Tamlin again
Says, "Lady, pull no more"
"What makes you pull the poison rose?
What makes you break the tree?
What makes you harm the little babe
That I have got with thee?"
"Oh I will pull the rose, Tamlin
I will break the tree
But I'll not bear the little babe
That you have got with me"
"If he were to a gentleman
And not a wild shade
I'd rock him all the winter's night
And all the summer's day"
"Then take me back into your arms
If you my love would win
And hold me tight and fear me not
I'll be a gentleman"
"But first I'll change all in your arms
Into a wild wolf
But hold me tight and fear me not
I am your own true love"
"And then I'll change all in your arms
Into a wild bear
But hold me tight and fear me not
I am your husband dear"
"And then I'll change all in your arms
Into a lion bold
But hold me tight and fear me not
And you will love your child"
At first he changed all in her arms
Into a wild wolf
She held him tight and feared him not
He was her own true love
And then he changed all in her arms
Into a wild bear
She held him tight and feared him not
He was her husband dear
And then he changed all in her arms
Into a lion bold
She held him tight and feared him not
The father of her child
And then he changed all in her arms
Into a naked man
She's wrapped him in her coat so warm
And she has brought him home

The nicest version of this i think I've heard since the late Sandy Deny did it with & without Fairport Convention.
So much grace and beauty!! Thank you so much!!!🙏🏾🔥❤️
So magical together.Just the right amount harmony and guitar work. lovely.Love their version of Clyde Waters.
mesmerizingly beautiful with such a joyous harmony !
I looked up Carterhaugh on wikipedia and dreamt away with this song playing in the background :)
That is superb.!!! Anais,I think i'm ready for marital bliss.

i think i saw somewhere on You tube the lyrics printed for these Anais Mitchell/Jefferson Hamer songs-- anyone know where these are?
Meravigliosa
Sounds like love to me....
This is STEAMY.
Modern day bards!
Just run into this. Great version - a good distillation of a song that can sometimes be hard to follow with repetition of lines and too many verses.
It's still hard to follow unless you're already familiar with the story, because they cut out half of the story at the end.
A court of thorns and roses anyone? 👀
Well, you gotta go to Carter Hall. lol
Prefer Fairport Convention's version - this is nicely done but overly arranged.
