  • This story has quite a poor reputation, but maybe it's time for a re-evaluation for 'Day of the Daleks'.

I've never understood why people like the SE. The special effects are dreadful. The only good additions are the new voices and the additional Daleks and scenes from the battle section. They still manage to ruin it with dreadful sound effects and rubbish out of place laser effects. And don't get me started on the CGI city.
These changes should've been subtle, unfortunately they stick out like a sore thumb

Aubrey Woods is the highlight of this excellent story. He's a villain but also completely believable as someone, in his own head at least, has convinced himself he is doing the right thing by acting as the middle man between the daleks and the people of this time period. With him there to act as a buffer the people are not treated as badly as they might be otherwise. He has charm and menace in equal measure. His conversion at the very end of the story shows his humanity was still flickering somewhere in his heart all along. This is an underrated story and is my personal favourite of the Pertwee era.

I don't understand the poor rep this story has either. Nu-Who would have us believe you can conquer an entire planet with a single dalek.
The story had so much to it the daleks are more of a cherry on the top of the sci-fi cake. The exchanges between Pertwee's Doctor and the Controller are a particular high point in my opinion.

Because the story was hemmed in, and did not had time to contract the normal voice actors of the Daleks. The producers almost got into serious legal trouble with Terry Nation for writing a Dalek story behind Nation's back. BBC noticed they need a season opening "hook" and went with the Daleks. The original bad guys were the Ogrons, but the Daleks got added to the scripts very late.

Great review! I remember struggling to watch this story as a kid on VHS due to the poor production values. After watching the special edition version, I won’t go back to the original. With new special effects, Dalek voices by Briggsy, newly shot scenes plus cgi Daleks & ogrons, this story is elevated into a truly fantastic timey-wimey epic! It’s a diamond in the rough!

When I first discovered Dr Who many years ago, I rushed to my local library and checked out the Terrance Dicks adaptation of this story. It was superb. So much so that when I eventually saw the serial, I was disappointed a bit. Part of it is that Uncle Terrance really streamlined the story and used the unlimited budget of the imagination on the printed page -- even the scene on the motorbikes was exciting and didn't feel like the Ogrons were running in place to make it seem faster than it was.
It's also a Who story riddled with minor production issues -- from the Dalek voices to the fact that the original version leaves the stinger in the recap segment of episode 2, 3 and 4. I do feel like the special edition corrects a lot of these..but man, it's still fun to see these in there.

This was the first Target book I bought. Yeah, TV budgets meant it didn't live up to everything that Louis Mark's wrote but I think it more than makes up for it with regard to the performances. Particularly, the exchanges between Pertwee's Doctor and the Controller.

Really good review man, it's great seeing you doing the classic stories. Just a few points,
At 6:07, the Ogron the Doctor shoots is clearly raising its gun about to take a shot at him, so I think Doc is justified in shooting it.
And 9:01, if you look carefully it's actually the same Orgon that says both lines
It is a really great story though. The Dalek battle at the end never bothered me too much because I always saw it as showing the strength of them that they can just sit in the field and pick off the UNIT soldiers without much effort.

And the politics in these stories were just part of the story. The Doctor didn't lecture or belabour the point. Kids saw an exciting story, whether it involved guerillas or striking miners, and the adults watching could see the contemporary references if they chose to do so. Subtlety is a sign of superior writing. Nobody likes being lectured to in an entertainment programme.

Another great review. I find the best reviews on UA-cam help me and others understand an emotion you felt watching it but couldn't explain! Example is here, Day of the Daleks is one of my favourite stories. But for some reason when I compare it to other daleks stories it falls flat. Not untill this video is realised it was due to the Daleks themselves being underutilised. Great video can't wait for Planet of the Dalek or Frontier in Space if you counting that one!

There _aren't_ any CGI Daleks in the final battle. What you're seeing is an all-new final battle, filmed with an authentic film camera from the period, with fan-made Daleks (the gent from This Planet Earth Ltd. provided them) and Ogron costumes.

This is the second Dalek story I saw as a 5 year old in 1980. The voices weren't an issue for me at first. Then I saw other episodes. The director obviously had no idea what a Dalek should sound like. I love the use of time travel as a plot device. The interrogation scene stands out as well. Definitely, though sadly not in the face of great competition on that score. I think this is a generally very underrated story just because there's clearly only a few daleks. But the story has so much to it that I don't think it's a detrimental as many people make out. The scene between Pertwee's Doctor and the Controller is particularly memorable, in my opinion at least.

Good review mate. I saw this when it aired in the 70s, as a little kid, and it left an impression on me. I loved Jon Pertwee as the Doctor - while Tom Baker will always be the quintessential Doctor, Pertwee had such charm, grace and wit ...and of course he kicks the crap out of people. It's been so long that I had totally forgotten about this series - thanks for preserving it - still a million times better than anything done in the 2020s Dr Who. Cheers.

American fan of the show here: "The Day of the Daleks" was the first "Doctor Who" story I ever encountered---not on TV but in the American reprint of the paperback novelization of the episode, a novelization that cleared up a few plot holes! Like the scenes of two Doctors and Jo Grants in the Tardis at the same time at the beginning and end of the story! I'd read the Starlog Magazine article about the Tom Baker episodes (which were beginning to be syndicated in the early 80s) and grabbed the paperbacks and loved them. Loved the Tom Baker episodes but a few years into the 80s our local station played the Pertwee episodes and I loved his James Bondian Doctor! Best to you , yours in the USA----Mike Mayak

9:31 Oh yeah, that bit, I will never understand that editing choice (and to spoil the humour, they figured out Jon Pertwee was the Doctor before the credits started rolling, still doesn't stop it from being funny though). Actually the editing of Day of the Daleks is a bit off because the openings of episodes 2 and 3 still have the cliff-hanger stings for some reason, it's clear the vision mixer was having a day off (I wonder how it played in the omnibus movie format since it was an early one to come out on VHS when they were editing stories into a movie format).

I could never get into this story as a kid, probably because of the lack of Daleks and the beginning felt very slow. But now I'm older, I always have a great time watching it. At four parts, it's actually one of the quickest-paced Dalek stories there is (if a bit rushed), and I'm always instantly invested by the brink-of-WWIII tone it establishes early on, to the point where when the budgeted invasion takes place at the end, I'm still really excited. It's one of my favourite Pertwees and the Special Edition was a good purchase.

I thought this was a great four part, the new special edition being better than the original, my favourite scene being the final battle between The Daleks with the Ogrons vs Unit Forces, but overall good. A later story 'Frontier in Space' that features the Master, the Ogrons and these Daleks as the Daleks only appear right at the end is a less interesting story or 'Death to the Daleks' cause some scenes didn't make sense like a Dalek being blown up after being attacked by primitive locals armed with cross bows and spears?

Yeah, even the original Daleks story was as subtle with 'Nazism is bad' as Winston Churchill bashing your face in with a brick. The Daleks literally state 'We will not adapt to the environment, we wil adapt the environment to suit us.' Also, must agree again, the series, even recently, has never been anti-male, the Hell Bent example comes across more as that particular guy was egotistical, and she was more used to being female.

Right, sorry I was a growing fan of this page, but you're being subjective about politics which I don't care for, either side. Modern Who /forces/ Politics down our throats, this is what the Fandom Menace are annoyed about, not just Star Wars. Classic Who doesn't /force/ Political ideas down our throats, and they explore /both/ sides! If you must have a subtle knock at your chosen enemy, take a page out of classic Who's book and do it nice and subtle, or have a go at Politicians as a whole, instead of exposing your own personal strings. It's unprofessional and immature (Quite like the modern BBC to be perfectly fair) All that aside, I'm going to continue and pray for an increase in objectivity, because that aside, these videos are very, very good and I otherwise entirely enjoyed it.

    • @MrTARDIS

Your comment just reeks of completely missing the point of media and comes across comical when you're responding to a video series about Dalek stories. Stories which are DIRECTLY influenced by political parties with stories based on current (at the time) political issues.
DW has ALWAYS /forced/ politics in. It's how sci-fi works and resonates and it's what media does; draws inspiration from current political and social events.

@@MrTARDIS I know, but my point was it's subtlety that made the best points. Eg Daleks are perfect alien representations of Facism, I assume we agree? Just as Cybermen are the perfect alien representations of Communism, all Cybermen are absolutely equal to each other, both sides are Tyrannical of course, one because of pure Xenophobia, the other because they're making everybody exactly like them. My complaint is that the subtlety is /gone/ when in the new series you get things like Arachnids in the UK, which the writing etc aside, having somebody that's as literally Trump as you can possibly get, is anything but subtle. Look at Davros! In many senses he's the stand in for Hitler, leader of the Facists, but does he look or act like him? I mean the only reason I grew up Politically neutral was Dr. Who, with the basic and easy to grasp concept of 'Beware the Extremes' because as we both know, there are some corners of the Universe, which have bred the most terrible things. Things that act against everything that we believe in, they must be fought. The BBC have an affirmative action hiring policy... Their motivation for hiring people is entirely racial, they're using literal Identity Politics as a hiring practice.... I find it fascinatingly terrifying that many Dr. Who fans don't actually know this, despite how easy and openly accessible this information is, or they don't care lol. Just remember, I'm neutral Politically, I'm sickened by both sides, just confused by Intelligent people who still have a side.

    • @MrTARDIS
      @MrTARDIS  4 роки тому +4

@@suddenlyfrogs9504, for the Cybermen they're not intended to be a stand-in for communism. Creators Kit Pedler and Gerry Davies saw them as a "science-gone-too-far" concept with cybernetics and augmentation which was a new thing in the 1960s. However, you can read communism into their creation...in other words, you're NOT politically neutral and you're also reading politics into a piece of media in a subjective way. Which is completely counter to what you're complaining about.
The subtlety of politics in Doctor Who was never there. You bring up Davros in that story who may be the leader of a fascist group but he's not remotely like Hitler. Remember, the Kaleds do Nazi-salutes, recruit boy-soldiers and Nyder even wears a Nazi Iron Cross on his Uniform (no joke).
The Happiness Patrol was based on Thatcherism. The Sun Makers was about government taxes. Planet of the Ood was about slavery (a political issue).
"The BBC have an affirmative action hiring policy" - I'd like to take this opportunity to inform you that I work in the media/TV industry. I am a cis white straight male who works in media. Basically, according to people who complain at every opportunity that the BBC only hire people based on race and that most or all the white cis straight males have been axed from the company, I do not exist.
Please do not try and explain my own industry to me.

@@MrTARDIS RE: The Cybermen creation part. I know that full well, my point was intentions or not, the Daleks deliberately represented Facism, the intent of the Cybermen doesn't matter, just like the intentions of people who want equality of outcome, doesn't matter, the Cybermen /ARE/ literally, in every way the embodiment of Equality of Outcome, which is (Ignoring the details and people's intentions) what Communism and it's incestual Cousin, Socialism aim for in the long run and cause, and they always have good intentions and manage to demonize classes of people, in the modern era we have this /exact/ problem, people who use the term 'Cis, White Man' think they're being anti racist and inclusive, when anti racist doesn't exist, it's just racism and the inclusivity factor's gone completely bonkers, I'm far from the only person who's noticed this, taken a long time to uninvest from the media forcing this down our throats and get annoyed enough to become known as the Fandom Menace, the angry fans sick to death of forced Politics, I mean all the examples you gave are agreed, very good examples of Political comparisons to today, or a time in history, but we clearly disagree that these cases are subtle, none of the new series is subtle.
So, I'd now also like to point out to you that you didn't state that you work for the BBC, just in the TV/Media business, so I assume you mean you work somewhere other than the BBC? because they're far from the be all, end all of television, and I honestly hope the Beeb's License fee is scraped, so they get a more accurate feedback from their viewers. I mean can you name a current, modern drama series on the BBC, that doesn't present a straight white guy as anything other than Evil, Moronically Stupid, or both? Look at Star Wars! They've started flopping, from the Last Jedi onwards for /precisely/ the same reason the Dr. Who fanbase is so divided, because 99% of those against new Who, aren't sexist or racist, they're just told they are by Corporations and their Shill Cybermen, who don't seem to understand how partisan they've become. Same thing happened to me, until I decided I was sick of being insulted on a regular basis, by my all time favourite TV show and movies (Star Wars) Dividing the audience into 2 clear camps proves it's the writing, when one side is Partisan and complains that the other side are sexist and racist, while that side are just saying they want consistency and cannonicity. I mean look at Whittaker, she'd have made an amazing Romana, just like Michelle Gomez would have been as good a Rani as Kate O'Mara was, if only she didn't play it so comically, but /nooo/ change the past, the past is wrong. or to quote Rian Neo Marxist Johnson 'Let the past die, kill it if you have to'. Changing genders, races or even age, is just an excuse for lack of imagination or faith in new characters and ideas, which clearly doesn't work when mixed with the kill the past ideology.
Also, the use of the word 'Cis' is so clearly partisan, that I'm done here. I'd sooner get a laugh out of a Cyberman, than stop a Corporate Shill from being racist... about themselves.
Merit, that's how you get decent stories, not because they are, or aren't a race. That's racism, 101. I'm done here.
