- The new MN Model MN99s. Just like the MN96 and MN99 it has a 260 size motor and metal ring and pinion gears in the axles. Only update to this version are more lights. Being full proportional in RTR form makes this better than the mnd90 and mn45 . So if you like this style rig this may be a good choice! Thanks to Banggood for sending this item for review. Nice that this one comes with all the lights installed,fitting a full lighting kit in the original was a nightmare.
I bet it is! This one has light boards that install in the locations. A lot of wiring underneath this one for sure. I will post a update when I figure out how to keep the headlights on.
wasn't TOO bad going full LED's, I used 10 mm LED's and the chromed plastic bezels... fit the body perfectly with 2 mm chrome ring showing with the grill on (cut the fake plastic headlight lenses away). they're damn bright, look really nice, and fit like they were made for it!

Personally, I think the additions of the turning and reverse lights is a good upgrade, but its a pity that it doesn't come with engine sound like the new control board offered by WPL.
WPLs sound kit/esc receiver combo is in a whole different league. Wish they at least gave a way to control the lights through the transmitter instead of the same old transmitter. You don't use your turn signals on a crawl course/trail lol.
@@RunThatRC Agree with what you say. As much as I appreciate the MN improvements, I just feel that they are all pretty half-hearted.
they're all getting better, newer C-14/24 kits have metal axle gears and the tan colored (lower ratio) B-36 gearbox with 180 motor. pop in 2 metal drive shafts and they're pretty solid.
Different strokes for different folks. Engine sound modules are why I bring earplugs on the trails.
Awesome video its a great looking mn99 lights on this is great also and yes would have been good if they kept the headlights on a separate switch on the remote or keep them on..

There are people who have hacked the PC board of an MN99S so they headlights stay on. Check youtube for one or more videos on the subject.
I noticed that the shocks in the old mn models are a lot stiffer than the shocks in these new mn 99s models
I think they are as well. The new ones seem to
make the suspension system work better.
If you buy one of these in 2021 they {may} come with red and amber tinted light lenses, plus the LEDs themselves are now colored. The top rear running lights on mine are clear but you make them red by adding the lenses, but the lower inside ones are red LEDs and have red lenses. Those need to be switched with the clear ones and the red ones put in their place, plus you need clear lenses for the reverse light. The turn signals are still amber/yellow LEDs.

Hello, I bought MN-45 non proportional a few months ago for my son but then it lead to me getting interested in the hobby myself. So I bought the WPL C24 metal kit and assembled it after watching your videos. It was very satisfying. Can you give me some ideas as to how to go about converting the MN-45 to full proportional? Thanks!
at the minimum you would need a esc receiver or the wpl esc receiver combo and a 3 wire steering servo and maybe steering horn and links( not sure how the none proportional steering setup looks like). The motor should work for now unless you want to go 2 speed with metal driveshafts. these are all wpl parts I have been recommending btw hope that helps.

@@liuaust1 most people use weights in the wheels to increase the performance of a crawler by having the weight down low preventing you from rolling over as much. There are different ways to weight your wheel. Some people use sticky weights for actual cars or solder wrapped around your wheels.

it may have went bad but I haven't had that issue so I dont know how to rebind these unfortunately.

you can get metal driveshafts for them. The WPL ones fit these as well. You can search ebay and amazon and even the Official WPL site.

Yes the "s" is just a silver color with lights. If your interested in the lights and have a mn96 or mn99 you can plug and play these lights on them. I have a link in description for the light kit.

you wont be disappointed. Once you figure what you need to modify it to your liking its a decent trail truck. It is also great to learn all the hobby tricks then all the name brand stuff will be cake to work on.

I have mn d99s upgraded with 2 speed motor 20A esc and a new transmitter but i lost the stock lighting function any idea for making it work
I have no idea how to make the stock lights work with aftermarket electronics. Seems like maybe a sound kit upgrade is needed if you want that functionality back.

Sorry I can't point you in the right direction for a light kit because I have not tried any light kits other than the wpl v2 and V3 esc with lights and sound. If your up to modify you can probably rewire or use new leds to work with the wpl board.

So I bought the mn99s. It's great. But it dosent crawl. If I add a esc, will it help it crawl a little slower?
yes a better and higher amp esc will help you slow crawl better. also you will be using a different tx/rx. the wpl V3 esc receiver combo works great.

I don't recommend making these fast. They really are meant to be scale trail trucks and will probably fall apart. Im using a 370 size 4500kv bl motor with castle mamba25 esc(discontinued esc)

Nice video, i ended up brought mine mn99s after watching this! I've upgraded my mn99s with receiver, esc and 370 single speed metal right gear after unboxing. But haven't have any clue on how to enable the stock lights on mn99s with the new esc and receiver. The mn99s light kit have 6pin connector , unable to fit it channel 3 of my receiver. Other than buying new light kit, is there anyway to run the stock lights on my receiver?
I think you would need to get a new light kit or light Controller and wire those LEDs up to it.

depends how and where you run it. People get anywhere from 15 to 25 mins.

Just got the MN99s and I'm curious if you've found a good way to keep the headlights on without applying throttle. Was thinking about tapping them straight into the running lights. We'll see when it shows up tomorrow.
I haven't messed with it. The lights are directly soldered to a board that holds the lights in place. Not sure if the headlights need to be on the board to complete the circuit for everything to function properly. I may try and desolder them and wire them up to the running lights like you said. But I might also change the headlights to a more scale halogen style yellowish light.
Thanks for the input. I guess I'll have to wait till it shows up to get a better look. Never really messed with the toy grade stuff, but these are so inexpensive I don't mind hacking it up. Do you know if you can bind a different transmitter to these 2 in 1 boards?
@@muhguyva8395 never tried binding it to another tx. Wonder if anyone knows the protocol they use? The electronics are sub par still and I end up replacing them with my own. These wpl and mn model are my first dive into cheaper RC kits. I had nothing but nitro rigs like the tmaxx, Rs4 touring cars, kyosho and losi buggys, short course trucks. Now I'm pretty much full electric besides my OG TMAXX. I just wanted a little Toyota crawler to build and mess with and I found these little tinker toys. I enjoy them as much as my pricier rigs. It's fun to push its limits because parts are affordable. You will enjoy it once you find the setup you like. So many ways to go about your build so have fun bro!

I'm not sure whether it is just my impression, but I notice the suspension of the new MN-99s seems to be lower than the original MN-90. Can you confirm if this is true?
They seem to be the same height. I do notice the newer mn 99 and 99s shock springs feel like a softer spring rate.
How far can you control it
it's never lost signal when in use but I'm always not too far from it because they are small. They do go a good distance imo.

It's a different board all together if you get the wpl v2 sound kit/esc receiver combo. So that would boost the MN99s performance

you can definitely use the esc receiver from a c24.
I got one of these and it worked really well, but I unfortunately broke the Rear Drive-Shaft on it, it looks like the Drive-Shafts for sale are slightly different to the one on this model. Do you know what type of Drive-Shaft I need to order to fix it?

Hey David, been researching through your videos about MN D90s and its variants, and never caught my eye that you have side windows on your light green rig where no MN is sold like this, as you point in this vid. How did you find those? Did you custom make them? Have you ever explained how in a vid? I'd love to get this car, but the need for committing to a total build, both in upgrading performance as well as dressing it up to make it look more scale, is as challenging as is off putting in some regards like making these windows. TIA and great content as ever, dude!
Thought I'd answer this even though I'm a year late. Clear windows are easy to add with clear plastic cut to size. Use clear acrylic sheet, clear styrene, or plastic from a "blister" product package. Another good source for plastic is to use a clear CD 'jewel' case. The clear plastic of a CD case is optical quality without distortion.

not waterproof out the box but you can waterproof them.
I want to buy an additional battery for my 99s but I find it difficult to choose because there are so many ,can you suggest me a good battery
2s 1500mah 18650 cells works great. Alos if you like lipos then a 1500mah 2s from the wltoys a979b or 144001 works well with plenty of runtime.

I haven't had time to run this and the new 99a. I will run them soon hopefully. Need to round up drivers for a trail run. I will have a video out on what I do to these to make it a little more fun to run.

I'm biased because I'm a yota guy but both can be modded and made to be a cool little rig. My opinion if you can build kits try the kit versions of either of them.

its all up too you. They both perform ok in rtr trim but you will end up modifying it if you get into it. They both use similar mods so you can get them to perform pretty similar.
Run That RC I’m gonna buy the driveshafts and probably a esc and use the 2 speed upgrade with remote making it about $100 when done. , if I change the driveshafts can it perform fine?

you wont have a way to switch gears on stock system. Also I'm not sure if the stock electronics can power the 370 motor.

What does this model need to change immediately?
Depends what you want to do with it. If your just trailing then all you need are some metal driveshafts and your good to go. If your going to do more technical crawling then upgrading electronics and all the plastic drive components to metal and ball bearings will smooth things out and give you a great crawling experience.

what is the difference between mn99 and mn99s ?
Mn99s has steel looking ring and pinion gears and has signal lights, taillights, running lights, headlights and reverse lights. Mn 99 only headlights and copper ring and pinion gears. Everything else is the same.

longest I have waited was about 3 weeks but on average I get my packages in under 2 weeks. I do get faster shipping when they send items to me for review because they use faster more expensive methods of shipping. Also the whole pandemic has flooded the shipping companies with orders from people staying home so shipping times are not normal at the moment.

not for the mn d90s the mercedes mn86 has doors that open.

There is no power to the motor 🤣 not much of a crawler
the motor can be used for crawling but the esc is the limiting factor. upgrade the esc, receiver and transmitter and it will transform its performance.
Will do ☺️ but my son loves it I've upgraded the motor for now and it's 10x better think I'll upgrade the esc and transmitter for him next then get some upgraded mettle parts for him he loves crawling with me I have a c24-1 with a ton of upgrades but at least it crawled out of the box :)

the mn99s lights won't work with it unfortunately. You would need to buy a light controller and lights or rewire the whole light system it came with to work with a light controller.

I owned the mn99s for a long time and in 2022 I purchased 2 more and the 2022 version came with a different color 260 motor that was definitely stronger and it has the official green land rover emblem on the grill and says land rover on the hood. They also must have changed the electronics because the little headlights still light up but the big headlights stay on all the time too. Different colored wires underneath and different colored on/off switch.

my D90 the older original, eBay shopping: 9 bucks for front+rear axles with metal bevel gears, 6.50 for two brass bevel pinions (axle inputs), 6.50 for two metal drive shafts, 5 bucks for a 260 motor+gearbox. 27 bucks total. it got oil shocks that arrived the day before the kit did, so it's never had a run on the stock ones. I like the look and performance of the Fayee 6 spoke rims+tires on it (5 bucks for 4), slightly smaller diameter, about 7/16" total wider track, and square face tread to make the most of the little extra width. they'd look great on the silver/black!
2 full wraps (16 turns) 2 mm solder to the front rims for climbing.

You don't need to worry if you want this light kit the link is in the description. If you have wiring experience and soldering then you can get the wpl sound kit v2 and buy some LEDs and you will have a way better light kit with sound and the ability to use the wpl transmitter to control the sound and lights. If you have a mn96 or mn99 the kit in that link will be plug and play for those.

old ear bud headphone wire, some 1/8W 470 ohm resistors and some colored LED's is cheap/easy to come up with for all the marker/running lights, reverse light LED's get wired to the motor leads with any little 2 pin connector.

My d90 when I pull down on the accelerator all it does is flash the headlights. Anyone know what peice needs to be replaced?
check your battery to make sure its charged and all the connections arent loose to esc or motor. May have a disconnect somewhere or if not it may be a bad esc receiver.

Do you know if you can put an engine sound module on the MN99s 1/12?
you definitely can. Some of the light kits for 10th scales are small enough, specially the all in one units. I know they make sound kits for the little orlandoos those might work for you. You will need to be running standalone electronics. I dont think you can make it work with stock electronics because it need the signal from the receiver to know the throttle inputs for the right sounds.

I agree. It looks less toyish in person. Just wish you could turn the lights off from the transmitter and wish it had sound. But it's still cool looking.
RunThatRC : Even though it doesn’t come with metal upgrades as pictured on the box, where are those upgrade shocks available? I haven’t seen anything for the MN specific models as far as metal shocks go. Hit me up some time on Facebook(Beretta Ready).
@@mistermasada1829 yeah I do not know where to get those parts they pictured on the box. They need to provide those upgrade parts at least. It's not bad the way it is but they need a new truck to freshen up the fleet. It's a nice d90 for sure, but giving another option would be nice.
eBay up some A285004's, they're a really good fit! you can use the screw holes for the inside-most screws of the front+rear trays is easy, mine are drilled+tapped top edge of frame just outside (inboard) of the trays to sit a little lower+softer... is a steeper angle. I'm running the shorter Fayee rims+tires too, so CG is a bit lower with more track width = stability. with stock wheels (taller) the tray screw holes are about right.
at the axle mount, barely open larger with a drill bit, put the shock on and a tubing spacer, then the screw. nice threaded bodies is easily adjustable and the spring weight is just about right too. they're usually 13-14 bucks for a set of 4.

Whats the best suspension for upgrade?
I actually just run the stock. The rgt 136161 has oil shocks but not sure if they would bolt on to the mn99 withoutmodification. Might not even be the right length but I'm sure someone will try it.
