I agree with you, these today's teen- age a-holes need a father like James Evans if they have a father like him, they wouldn't get out of line, messing up
Good Times was never the same after James Evans departure from the show. But the producers finally got their wish, because according to Esther Rolle, they initially wanted her to be a single mother, but she insisted on there being a Father in the house.
Wrong!!! Jimmie walker and bernadette are the heart and soul of good times thier back and forth made the sitcom worth watching john was ok but jimmie and bernadette were the star's!!!
@@moetolove Yeah I know. I think it had something to do with him constantly getting upset at the writers for wanting to continue to make Jimmie Walker a stereotype. Esther left the show for the same reason, but they eventually talked her into coming back for the final season.
I agree. The way Norman Lear fired John Amos was cowardly. John Amos showed up to do season 3. That's when he was informed, he was fired. It's ironic, because after John Amos was fired. They toned down JJ's buffoonery. Norman Lear was just being honoree and didn't want to listen to a black man.
The only about is that James held the family back with a 6 grade education who is somebody that has absolutely no education I hate to say it but Norman Lear was right in getting rid of James
yup and its a real shame. John wanted the show to stay conveying a positive message to set the standard for black viewers, but Lear just wanted the show to be about JJ acting a bafoon the whole time, so Amos left the show and Lear killed off his character in the weakestway possible, smh.
John and eslle sorry if I spelled it wrong both left the show because it was going into the JJ comedy show and they both didn't want that remember she was gone for about two whole seasons
Let’s remember the real creator of the show Mike Evans the son of George Louise on the Jeffersons he created the show and name the lead characters Michael Evans after himself
If they would have listened to him, the show would have tanked. Whether it's JJ, Fresh Prince, Arnold Drummond or Steve Urkel. Sitcom clowns is what sells..
Norman Lear didn't like how powerful and popular James was. James has an issue with how the show was full of negative stereotypes and demanded a change. So they fired him. After that the show took a deep fall no matter the effort they took to fill the void. Florida left for two seasons for the same reasons, the negative stereotypes.
If every single woman had a man like James that would take charge of a household it would be a lot more stability in America right now, most fathers today have turned into wimps with the mothers running the show
My Dad once told me that he looked up to James when he was younger during Good Times' original run on CBS....turned out to be JUST LIKE him, and I can honestly say he's the reason I turned out the way I did.
James Evans could never get a break in life due to him not having an education. He had the ultimate chance to get a break when his cousin offered him a partnership in his garage business but he wind up getting killed in a car accident.
Norman Lear Never wanted Florida to have a husband or a father living in the home. He wanted her to be a single struggling in the ghetto mother. James was a Strong Black father and a good husband to Florida. In the end this is why Norman Lear got rid of James, the Father and Husband, and replaced him with JJ the Fool. He got his wish to have the black man out of the home. James was the best. Like wilona said, Hot Black and Strong.
This is one TV show I looked forward to seeing all the characters felt real w real problems and GOOD TIMES day by day, I grew up poor and I could relate to them.
John Amos Was the Best I Agree Every Household Need Father's Like Him and Every Young Punks in the world 🌎 That's Why The world so Messed up it ain't enough Father's in the House with these Boys So My Boy John Amos Always Get a A Plus In My Book He Love His Family and Was Crazy about his Family But Got on they Case when he had to
James Evans Sr. Is the ultimate tv dad! Without James there'd be no Uncle Phil, no Carl Winslow, no Dan Conner, no Al Bundy, no Frank Mitchell, no Julius Rock etc. John Amos was the first Black America's tv dad before Cliff Huxtable in the eighties.
After the trash Netflix just dropped, I was reading about people referencing this show, the original. It looks like I've just discovered something good!! It's very interesting to see how culture has changed since the 70's
James was strict but he defended his wife and kids something fierce!
Damn Right!!!🫡💯🫡
Rest in power to a wonderful tv dad. Thanks for the Good Times!!!!!
They don't make em like James no more. Salute to all the OG father's, that will never leave their kids behind
Damn Right!!!🫡💯🫡
The episodes with James Evans were the best!
Ikr. I hated the fact that he left
Jame is the type of father these punks need today
THAT'S for sure!!!!!!!!!

A-TO-THE-MEN!
@johncoleman2347, I agree with you 100% Percent!
James Evans is the best and most realistic TV 📺 Father ever
One of them . John Walton was another .

"Yeah, well I'mma have to work out an understanding with the Lord some other time Florida." 😂😂😂
James Evans is a real true father to his kids he treats his lady very well strong man of the family keeping everything together
@my name is
Yes! And even though being poor and living in the ghetto!!
SHE insisted a " Man " be in the house !!! What a good concept .
Nice that John is still alive.

James was a real Father
He stayed with his family to the end ! He never ran out!
unlike REAL black families.
That's the bare minimum...once you FORCE a child into this world you're supposed to take care of them. The bar is set really low for black males
He was supposed to
I love John Amos and will watch anything he's in
I love James Evans! Best TV dad ever!
ABSOLUTELY
The best TV Father ever...James Evans, Sr. 💗💗💗💗💗💯🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Good times wasn't the same when he left
This dude looks and reminds me of my old man. Lost him a few years back I get a good laugh everytime I see these old clips.
James Evans along with Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince and Carl Winslow are my top three television dads of all time
Fred Sanford
PZOHOM
ZZZ BLK PK
And Lester Jenkins
We don't have such dads
And George Jefferson
The best television dad ever.
Nah...Uncle Phil from Fesh Prince. James had to much of a temper and too much of a misogynist.

Yup
I must say I disagree.
he kept fighting and had his head up!
Florida should have been grateful. All James wanted to do is take care of his family
I think the only time I ever cried over a TV dad death is when James Evans died.
Thank you for everything you’ve done , rest in power
James Evans may have died in 1976, but today we lost John Amos.
RIP.
James Evans- best tv dad EVER
maybe the best BLACK father.
James Evans Sr. was the absolute best!💯
Great show stay safe yall.
I grew in a really pour family so I related to their struggles. Not all of course but many.
James Evans, the best TV dad in the history of television.
James evans and uncle Phil were the best
James is The Man especially when it all comes down to a hustle and flow he is on The Move
Actor John Amos was fired from Good Times in 1976 due to a situation between him and Norman Lear
Shame on Lear.
He was unhappy with the direction of the storyline. It was becoming the JJ show
The best thing to happen to him. In 1977 John Amos the adult Kunta Kinte in Roots and his career took off
yup and its a real shame. John wanted the show to stay conveying a positive message to set the standard for black viewers, but Lear just wanted the show to be about JJ acting a bafoon the whole time, so Amos left the show and Lear killed off his character in the weakestway possible, smh.

Let’s remember the real creator of the show Mike Evans the son of George Louise on the Jeffersons he created the show and name the lead characters Michael Evans after himself
The co-creator of Good Times was Eric Monte. He wrote Cooley High
He didn’t have that large a role in the show.
James is the father we all need today. Our youth is lost today because we don't have men .
Well start with those in the house first
And the type of men women marry
One of my all-time favorite tv dads!!!!!
Such a great character and a great actor!! RIP James Amos
Thank God for my father.❤️💪
Very underrated Father character. RIP John Amos😢
James Evans was proud to see his youngest son Michael singing When You're Young And In Love
James couldn't stay in his seat when Michael was singing. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
That sadly was John Amos' last episode.
@moabite sounds that part was hilarious too
Monty was a 'Little Rascal' named STYMIE.

James was just like my Grandfather. 😄
This man was really something. They don’t make them like this anymore
I hope they use John Amos in those Progressive Insurance TV dad commercials like they did Reginald VelJohnson. ( Carl Winslow )
The Best TV DAD for the Black Community at the time. John Amos made it happen.

James was very strict, but more parents should be that way. It's too bad John Amos was fired from the show.
"We'll make it the same way we always have. Somehow." Been there done that. Know just how it feels. But God has always come through for us.
John Amos/James Evans best father portrayal hands down! Loved this show!
RIP JOHN Amos

James Evans is the most realistic Dad on television IMHO. He is a loving, devoted father but also a strict disciplinarian - so needed today.
James Evans did not play with misbehavior
