    Description
Reflections are an interesting phenomena of nature that we are entranced by and struggle with when we try to recreate them. Some reflections are smooth and almost mirror like, others are broken and irregular. Some of what we “see” has to do with perspective in other words how close we are to the surface of the water but largely what we see depends upon the condition of the water surface. That is where our drill will focus on today.
    The water surface
When the water surface is undisturbed and placid the reflection is usually mirror like and the reflection is complete. When the water surface is disturbed by waves the reflection too is distorted by the rippled surface. When a strong wind rushes across the surface the reflection is lost or broken. Then there can be objects floating on the surface and this can further distort the reflection. One thing that seems consistent is that the reflection moves in a vatical direction oriented to the viewer. This is a big difference if compared to shadows which move away from the light source.

So relaxing to watch you paint and listen to your voice. The experience is as beautiful as the painting.

I have to thank you for the excellent commentary. I love the manner in which you critique your work and explain solutions. Your comments are every bit as helpful as watching you paint. Thanks for sharing what goes on in the mind of an artist. And I love the long format.

I'm always learning new tips from you in my watercolor journey. I picked up painting again at an extremely difficult point in my life, about 5 years ago, and it has been very healing. I truly believe that expression through art can help tremendously in people recovering from trauma. Thank you once again, Gary. Love all of your work. You are truly an amazing artist/painter.

I use photography and painting for similar reasons; it can be very therapeutic. I wish you the best in your own recovery from your own difficult times.

Thank you for sharing your experience - I have encountered such experiences very often in my class - and it is true that working with our mind/ spirit - through our hands - to create ...is a way we can find light through the darkness

Thank you very much Gary. I took away two lessons here; the bold approach to the dark reflections, which would have taken a lot of courage for me. Secondly, the interesting brush strokes, carefully placed, on the trees! VERY effective.
As for talent, it’s a taboo word for artists I’ve noticed. I agree in part about the importance of perseverance, and I’ve improved a lot, but there must also be vision, an inner eye that sees what is not there in reality. Creativity, in other words. If you don’t have that, you end up copying a reference photo. Anyway, I AM getting bolder with my first layers to compensate the fading. Thanks again.
