GTA IV's story was the best, certainly for the HD Universe, especially with how Rockstar tied in Johnny and Luis in the DLCs. Plus Niko was a much more original and different character compared to all other GTA protagonists.
I’d say Michael was more unique. Niko was a lot like other GTA characters. He was a newcomer trying to climb up the criminal ladder and be the best of the best. Michael had already done that. He was already one of the best of the best, and has since retired. His arc was over until GTA V happened.

The 3D Universe is the most interesting timeline. It feels like an actual story, with characters going through their own arcs; but GTA IV is the best individual story in time. Legitimately fascinating how the weaved so many stories together. It's a damn shame Rockstar probably won't do it again due to GTA/RDR Online.

You nailed it. Him low difficulty killing Johnny ( a former GTA bigshot) so easily basically legitimized Trevor's treat level (def con X) and simultaneously catapulted his character into one of the most loved (love to hate) protags in the GTA universe
I honestly thought Trevor had no method to his madness after killing Johnny. I know WHY he did it, but that just made him harder for me to like as a character. It's not all bad though, he did kind of get his comeuppance with Mrs. Philips if you go with the C ending.

Niko worked as merchant navy trying to avoid people who Bulgarin have connections with for years after ship sank somewhere in Italy with him on the boat, being blamed that by Ray that he did on purpose just to go away with the money 2. He's been in contact with Roman lately and went in LC to live better life, turns out he was lying to his aunt (Niko's mother) and Niko. 3. Niko was looking for revenge for betrayal during Kosovo war (note that it happened in 1998, Niko was looking for traitor for 10 years) when he went back to corpse pit and saw who were left alive (discovered that two survived). He thought Florian did it, but it was Darko. Deaths that Darko's and Niko's unit caused the massacre on his own village turned him angry and betrayed him for revenge. He didn't care much about money, only took 1000$ because he need it for drugs (which addiction probably happened between his friends were killed and betrayal).
This was the GTA universe that I jumped into and fell in love with. It has many great characters that I connected with. It was very emotional complex especially and the three storylines of 4 was amazing how they connected all that together.

Fun fact: The deathwish option was supposed to kill Franklin and replacing him with Lamar in the end, the concept was scrapped later and used in RDR2 with Arthur Morgan's death and replacing the main character as John Marston.
This is why i've bought every game rockstar has dropped since i was a kid. The storytelling is epic and flows together making you want to play all the games.
I love GTA IV but I personally think GTA: San Andreas was the best one, mainly because of the way CJ found out about the betrayals, and the whole story just in general
I found GTA IV better because of all 3 characters overlapping stories, dark atmosphere, Developed characters, and Niko the most human and best GTA character ever, and of course how long it is (90 Missions for GTA IV and if you add EFLC missions its 138 Missions long)
The only thing that bugged me about the "HD Universe" was that when GTA IV came out, rockstar said it didn't have any connections at all to the older games Then GTA V comes out and they include things like franklins madd dog concert tickets, an OG Loc album, the ls radio DJ mentions the Domestibot from the 80s and both Lazlow and Jack Howitzers careers are mentioned

I wish Franklin had a better story arc. I feel like out of the three playable characters, he got the shaft. His arc started out pretty good, but they never went all out with it. It was kinda like a do-over of CJ's story arc in SA, but they never showed enough of it. Maybe he should've had a sort of honor system like Red Dead, where he is given choices between being more like Micheal, or more like Trevor. I don't know, I feel like he didn't have enough screen time and character development.

Chinatown Wars was so good. One of the best PSP games I have. Shame that I can’t get the bonus content as the Wi-fi connection doesn’t work on modern hubs
You also see the heroin that played a big role in the intro too. You see the Traids putting it into the car that get's lifted of the boat in the intro. It's later stolen off the Traids by the Angels of Death and then stolen again by the Lost when they raid the AoD clubhouse. The Lost try sell it through Elizabeta, along with Niko and Playboy X but the buyers turn out to be undercover LCPD... There's a lot more that goes on after but you get my point, GTA 4's story is very complex and underrated.
Rockstar didn’t build the game up for Franklin to kill another one of the trio, deathwish is the only ending that makes sense. The only killer would be Trevor on Michael if we lost his head or something.

Big Homie Zy I always hated the 3D games drive by mechanics. when i finally got gta iv in middle school i was so ecstatic with the controls and physics, I almost cried out of joy lol. when I played gta v I actually cried in despair with where the series was headed, online was the machine gun that literally tore the camel to shit and hell
This is why i originally stick to the original gta 5 instead of online.

Just a small correction - The shadowy agency featured in GTA IV (and V) is the IAA i.e. 'International Affairs Agency', not 'Internal Affairs'. Basically the HD GTA universe's CIA.

Chinatown Wars was so good. One of the best PSP games I have. Shame that I can’t get the bonus content as the Wi-fi connection doesn’t work on modern hubs

You also see the heroin that played a big role in the intro too. You see the Traids putting it into the car that get's lifted of the boat in the intro. It's later stolen off the Traids by the Angels of Death and then stolen again by the Lost when they raid the AoD clubhouse. The Lost try sell it through Elizabeta, along with Niko and Playboy X but the buyers turn out to be undercover LCPD...
There's a lot more that goes on after but you get my point, GTA 4's story is very complex and underrated.
Another fantastic video, even better because you also included Chinatown Wars. GTA V have nothing that makes the GTA IV triology so great.

Rockstar didn’t build the game up for Franklin to kill another one of the trio, deathwish is the only ending that makes sense. The only killer would be Trevor on Michael if we lost his head or something.
Option C in GTA V is the ONLY option. The other two endings just leave a very bad taste.

Johnny was the only important one that died. I can’t speak for everyone but I didn’t kill Packie or Agent ULP.
