One of many, many wonderful songs from the pen of Ray Davies. Beautiful, wistful melody, and doesn't he have a sweet, warm voice. Waterloo is a mainline station in London, serving the south of England, and also a famous bridge offering great views of the city. "Terry and Julie" refers to Terence Stamp and Julie Christie, beautiful film stars of the 60s.

Thanks, TheoZoffrok! Never knew who 'Terry and Julie' were before this, makes total sense... (does anyone else still have a celebrity crush on Ms. Christie? I sure do.)

I don’t think it’s about Terence Stamp and Julie Christie. An unknown young couple would appeal more to Ray Davies than celebs. But anyway, a wonderful record, one of the best pop singles ever recorded

My friends dad was quite big in the music business in the 60s and worked for the Kinks record label. He actually persuaded them to change from their old boring name to 'The Kinks as 'kinky' was a fahionable word at the time

Apparently the equivalent of modern day's cool or "sick".

Nice! "Waterloo Sunset" is one of my favorite songs of theirs. The Beach Boys influence can be heard in it too. The Kinks were a seminal band in the sixties, dropping hits like "You Really Got Me" and "All The Day, All The Night" in the early years of the British invasion to classics like "Waterloo Sunset", "Well Respected Man", "Sunny Afternoon", and "Victoria" in the later sixties. They dropped "Lola", "Apeman" and "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" in the seventies and enjoyed a couple of big hits in the early eighties too, with "Destroyer" in 1981 and "Come Dancing" in 1983. The Kinks wrote a lot of great songs with catchy hooks and memorable lyrics. Van Halen covered several of their songs, including "You Really Got Me" and "Where Have All the Good Times Gone!". And it was a cover of their song "Stop Your Sobbing" that launched The Pretenders. Regarding the vocal differences between the sixties and the seventies. Music technology made great advances during the sixties. Recording equipment went from 2 tracks to 4 to 8 to 24 over the decade. Public address systems followed suit. Guitar amplifiers when from a single speaker to multiple speakers with built in reverb. Guitar effects pedals were first created as well as synthesizers. Before then musical groups often needed several singers to ensure the lyrics could be heard above the instruments and that tradition carried over into the sixties. But by the seventies technology rendered that unnecessary. The early seventies were also the era of the singer-songwriter, artists who often recorded without backing vocalists or with maybe one or two. Singing groups didn't disappear that decade, but they no longer dominated the scene.

4:12: "Psychedelic ... whimsical" -- as usual, Just Jammin' finds the unexpected combination of words that perfectly encapsulates a song.

One of my all time fav songs - it's such a pretty tune and Ray Davies' voice is so unique. The ref is to Waterloo bridge and area in London. You'll probs have Lola suggestions - well rated too, but Waterloo Sunset is my personal fav. PS, just saw someone mention Sunny Afternoon - that's cool too.

What a nice request, and reaction! I haven’t heard this song in forever, but I love it. I think you’re right about the sound of vocals in the 60s- I can’t put my finger on it, but I know what you mean. There was a unique special sound to them, often. 😊👍🏼💜

Great choice! Thanks for choosing this song for your reaction. Love '60s Kinks, and especially this tune. If you don't mind me asking, how do you choose which songs to react to and post?
