You can pick any one of the Kinks songs and hear something profound and great. Best group ever
Ditto other comments MASTERPIECE!
Another Masterpiece from the Band with a catalogue full of Masterpiece's.
What an absolute masterpiece!
The Kinks are a deep, deep dive but it has been rewarding for me. Favorite band at the moement.
Almost forgot. I got into the Kinks because of my older brother who bought the Lola... album. I first saw them in 1973 in the Felt Forum in NYC. The 3rd song they played was Shangri-la which I had never heard before. After hearing that song I knew I'd be listening to the Kinks for life.
Shangri la. My favourite Kinks track, suprised to see this on a reaction
The Kinks - A Proper British Group ! 🇬🇧
Proper!
Thanks so much for this one. This album was a concept album about a guy named Arthur who lived through WWII and thought life would be great when he got home. Its autobiographical in that Arthur would be Rays father and the album discusses his child leaving England for Australia and that was a major event in young Ray and Daves life when a favored sister moved to Australia. This album is a great album as is the one that followed it Lola vs Powerman and the Money-Go-Round. You guys should do yourselves a favor and check those 2 albums out. It was the peak of the Kinks ability and you guys sure seem to like the Kinks. The late 60s early 70s Kinks were turning out music that far surpassed the Kinks music you grew up with. The 80s stuff was good but the earlier stuff was on another level
Small quibble. The song (and album) is about Ray and Dave's (much-loved) much older brother-in-law Arthur. And yes, he was married to their sister.
Yeah, I was going to say examining this song does need a knowledge of the rest of the Arthur album to understand this part of Arthur's journey.
I think this was the best rock opera ever written. Hands down better than “Tommy”. As a historian Davies takes the listener from the height of the Empire (Victoria) to the welfare state that this song describes.
Fantastic drumming! Cheers.
Love the Kinks
Maybe another Kinks song you could check out from their album Low Budget
Either Superman or Low Budget would be Amazing 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
….Shangri-La is from the “Arthur or Decline and Fall of the British Empire” Album released in 1969.
Thanks for the shoutout,1969 was when it was released. Merry Christmas 🎄
Forgot how good a tune this is, haven't heard it for a good few years, thanks to the requesters for getting it played so i could enjoy it all over again!
This is a great song. The Kinks, were brilliant and made such a huge impression on youth culture in their time.
My suggestion today is Eric Clapton, Behind the mask.
Dead end street is my go to tune
I near freaked out until I realised the thing poking in from the right side of the screen was a waving cats tail 😅
👍🏴
Yeah. Sometimes he gets in the shot.
Thus is such a great song about commercial ways anonymity and making dempts. And to find out to be lonely after all
The stranglers did a great cover of - all day and all of the night. Always loved the Kinks, Ray Davies is a top man
One of my favourite Kinks song. You should check out Some mothers son from the same album. Unbelievably SHANGRI-LA sold poorly in the UK .
You will adore "drivin" from the same (great great great) album.
Here is hoping that you find your Shangri-La / Shambhala.
Ps: Chris, from one overthinker to another, love the T-shirt.
Pure genious
My favourite song of theirs which is not on many albums. Animal Farm is another not on many of their albums.
Bands only put songs on one album, thats the way it works. The truth is though that Shangri-la was also on the great compilation album Kinks Kronikles
This song is from their album "Arthur, of The Decline and Fall of the British Empire." "Animal Farm" is from "The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society." Both of these albums are absolutely essential and deserve to be listened to all the way through.
I love that song Animal Farm.
I was sure you would find the lyrics of this masterpiece relevant. There are no many in popular music to have dealt in their texts with such apparently trivial problems. This is why Ray Davies is so important. And also because musically, his songs were so melodically great and clever. He would never reach this level of excellence after 1971 unfortunately.
If you like this kind of psychedelic rock, you may really like Donovan. Try Sunshine Superman; Mellow Yellow; Jennifer Juniper; Colours as songs to get you started.
A great critique of the empty suburbanite middle class lifestyle. The world didn’t really accept the reactionary messages Ray Davies was putting out there.
You need to hear the l.p. to fully understand the song and put it in context. Great, great record from 1969.
irs so bloody ironic
.....I sometimes wonder if Ray's albeit-BEATLESQUE nod to "White Room" in "Shangri-La"s refrain, is DELIBERATE - certainly SKEWS with it.....
God save the Kinks
that's QUITE a point they put on their social commentary- OUCH
You like The Kinks but aren’t that familiar with their earlier works? Really?! The heart of their best songs by far is in the 60s, petering off by the 70s to just spotty at best success from then on. Do yourselves a huge favor by checking out the albums “Village Green Preservation Society”, “Something Else”, “Face To Face”, “Kink Kronicles”, “Arthur”, Muswell Hillbillies”….. just sayin’
Great reaction though.
It would be cool if you did their song yes sir.
