Way back in 1984 when I was 14 years old, I received tickets to see The Kinks at for Christmas from my Mom. It was my 1st concert I ever saw and went with my friends Michele & Donna and their mom. Great show, but they didn't play this song. RIP Mom, Michele, Lori, and the Philadelphia Spectrum. Merry Christmas, ladies 🎄

They had heavy influence on the alternative, hard rock and punk bands that came after and were one of the best bands around in the 60s and 70s. Try You Really Got me for one of the songs that literally launched hard rock like pop and created thousands of musicians who picked up instruments after hearing them. Ray Davies (vocals, songwriting) is playing a guitar line, but the fancy lead work is by little brother Dave, who basically created the "hard rock" sound (see "You Really Got Me", "All Day and All of the Night" and their other early hits), inspiring the likes of Eddie Van Halen (This assumes you know how big Van Halen got, but trust me..) This, however, was from 1977, after The Kinks had had several up and down periods, and was more in the style of the then-new "punk rock" movement. (See The Sex Pistols or The Clash.) Punk featured a more anarchic sound, with strong social consciousness vibes, such as Ray basically singing that traditional commercial Christmas celebrations don't resonate with the poor, as they have more pressing concerns. But because Ray has always brought humor to the Kinks' songs (he writes about 90% of the songs), it's still heartwarming in its own way. Ray and Dave are still alive and possibly even getting back with drummer Mick Avory to record new music. Bassist Jim Rodford died in 2019 and keyboard player John Gosling left us in August, but Rodford's predecessor, John Bolton, is still with us, and Ray usually played the keyboards in the studio, anyhow. (If they play live shows, they can hire somebody.) The reunion talk is a bit of a surprise, as Ray and Dave are one of the classic examples of "if you love your brother DON'T be in a band with him (like Liam and Noel Gallagher in Oasis) and they have barely spoken for long periods.
