Steve Morse has said he liked Petrucci early on, but Morse noted when he heard this solo that Petrucci had finally figured out his own unique style and sound.
definitely one of the best solos in my book. the technic, the melody, the phrasing, everything is perfect. for me, it's really up there with "tornado of souls"
Fuckin great performance by James Labrie. Will always be one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Thanks for making such wonderful music Dream Theater. Sincerely, a fan for life.
Oh I know the guitar solo is awesome, but really, does nobody wants to talk about the kickass drumming in this song.... OMG!! What a fuckin drummer !!!
I have to say I've always found Portnoy's playing very engaging, interesting. He's always had the talent be flashy while playing exactly what the song asks for, always adding for the better. Say what you will about the guy, he's one of the most artful drummers in metal. And yes, in the end, while I never cared much who plays as long as the music is right, I must admit current Dream Theater is but a shadow of what they were, and Mangini, as much as he is a technical powerhouse, sounds just plain uninteresting.
@@carlosgarzon1799 Gavin Harrison, Marco Minnemann or Mangini himself, just to name some of them. But that's the thing, MP had the soul and the spirit, and the perfect chemistry of his craft with the songs he played, not an almost-robot drummer hitting the toms at the perfect time with almost no emotion
I don't get all the hate and criticism of James LaBrie's voice. His vocals send chills. I would like to know the reason behind all the negativity. Do you really want a death metal vocalist for Dream Theater? That's not right. For metal the two most common vocal styles are either the high-pitched vocals like in hard rock and heavy metal or the "screaming" kind of vocals like in death metal and black metal. James LaBrie is more of the old school heavy metal singer. Another big influence on him is Geddy Lee, another very high-pitched vocalist. It's hard to sing like that so that immediately is a reason for respect not hate. James' voice is more than fine and he has a very impressive vocal range. I personally love his singing. Maybe some of you personally don't like his singing but you must understand it's not easy to sing like that and he really can sing.
Seen them live during ADTOE and my-oh-my, his vocals were superb. They played this as the encore and sounded JUST LIKE THIS. He may have the burden of age but has rarely lost the punch in his voice.
Great solo by Joe Petrucci. I wish more 'shredders' would follow him. What Dream Theater does is so much more progressive and musical than most of the Metal bands. There's just all sorts of great stuff happening here.
Here's why I like DT and this song so much : A lot of people would say that the solo is the best part but hear me out. 1- The song comes in with this really nice chord progression by JP. 2: Then the rythm track comes in with this sick drumbeat and bassline and supports the melody really nicely. 3: The main riff comes in right after and just kicks my ass everytime I hear it.
I've listened to this song thousands of times... seen it played live a few times... and every time... it feels like i just grabbed hold of a 1000 volt power line... ELECTRIFYING!! I love DT!!!!
I was there! You don't hear it in this video or on the DVD but when this song started that night, Petrucci was not coming out of the PA for the first 10 seconds or so. All you could hear was the cabinets he had on stage
Such a flawless song, perfect guitar riffs from the start to the finish, godlike bass and drums, amazing memorable vocals, Jesus plays a guitar solo. The song sounds like nothing you've ever heard of before yet catchy enough to get stuck inside your head in a listen or 2.
After listening to so much great music of "DT's archive" I've been mostly attracted by two albums: The entire 2005 life performance in New York's Radio Music Hall and nine years later the 2014 life album "Breaking the fourth wall" (Boston).
Wish I would have been old enough to experience this. Never even heard of DT until Senior year of High School. Shame, such great performances over the years.
Awesome video! Thank you for sharing this. I was seventeen the first time I heard this - the year Images and Words came out and it is still just as awesome an experience to here those songs today as it was the first time.
5:16 is pretty much the greatest piece of music i've ever heard. Everything about it is impeccable and godly. The drum beat, james singing (excelled hisself this particular concert/tour) The ringing guitar starting high to low, myung's galloping root notes. Just the f***ing lot of it! haha
Even at 4:3 aspect ratio and without GoPro angles and shit, this is so much more enjoyable for me than the latest of their DVDs. Soundwise, for sure (Live at Luna Park was the low point on that issue), but also competent editing (drum fills , solos and bass lines are all shown when they actually happen).
Goddamn, hadn't listened to this song in a year or two. They absolutely fucking nailed it on this night. Great mix, insane drumming, great feel and timing. One of those rare moments in live concert history.
I remember reading James LaBrie talking about his vocal injury. He said it took about 10 years to return to form, which right about lines up with this performance.
WOW, what an awesome DT performance, I love this song, nothing better than having an awesome gig, of-course there is those shitty gigs that we all have as musicians but it's so great to see when they are flawless as this DT performance...
So true. When I saw them, Periphery opened for them. everyone went crazy during Periphery's performance, but when DT came on stage, everyone was calm and peaceful.

John's wireless system broke. In the beginning you see him playing without a guitar cable. Later in the video you see there is a cable. In the studio he replaced a small bit of the recording with the right part. They didn't use any backing tracks live at that time.
+Dan Metallic actually no.. on the mike portnoy (drumcam)dvd, Mike says johns guitar went out during half this song. so they had to add the guitar in a studio before the release of the DVD.
YES! LaBrie managed the high note on "praying for time to disappear". Day is complete

he absolutely killed it!

Great Labrie performance, holy shit!
Wow Petrucci killed that solo, very clean sound.
+Deuterium52 Its because he has the flames on the shoulders, he can play faster more easily.
bro is this studio edited or something?
Pragyan Nath Nope, just Berkeley musicians from another dimension.
Steve Morse has said he liked Petrucci early on, but Morse noted when he heard this solo that Petrucci had finally figured out his own unique style and sound.
Yes he did hes a pro
i love dreem theatre! especially paul petrucci and mike mango
Uzzwick G "Mike Mango" Sounds tasty.
Yes, Mike mangina is the sex

Here LaBrie is really perfect. Epic!
@@martijndegroot1593 sorry, that's wrong. I'm no defender of Labrie, but he nailed every note that night.
@@alexandermeadow860 i think you didn't get the joke 😅
Martijn de Groot guess not...woosh! :-)
Everyone is fantastic in this performance
labrie sounds awesome! and phenomenal solo obviously
James thank you for everything!
james ? thanks and love to everyone...by the way did john petrucci write the most of their songs :D
SelbstmordGMBH because he's obviously a good song writer. Moron
This was absolutely incredible, the energy, Labrie's voice! the instrumentation!
labrie nailed this!
At least for once, Labrie kicking major ass
Fuckin great performance by James Labrie. Will always be one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Thanks for making such wonderful music Dream Theater. Sincerely, a fan for life.
I was in that crowd. They absolutely crushed it. James sounded amazing. Glad this was recorded to remind us what he sounded like in his prime.
James is magical. I love everything about him.
Oh I know the guitar solo is awesome, but really, does nobody wants to talk about the kickass drumming in this song.... OMG!! What a fuckin drummer !!!
Well... That's because Portnoy vs Mangini is always a sensitive subject for Dream Theater fans.

One of my Favorite DT Song since 1992 . They played it live in Lyon 1997 , i was there and it was totally Amazing !!!!
5:58 - 6:28 MP Totally kicks ass! I know there are technically better drummers.. but his fills perfectly follow the song!
Well, if we meticulously pick the problem of the section, I guess it would be... his improvisation was a lil bit out of the right spot of the tempo...
Raylin Chao what do you mean "a little bit out of the right spot of the tempo"? Out of timing or what? (Im not english)
@@raylinchao7801 lol shit
Really? Name one pls haha

The Labrie of 1989 - 1995 was one of the best rock singers of all the times!!!
Cotramjoxxx 1989-2000 :p Till his second injury. He displayed some fantastic performances every now and then, though.
Seen them live during ADTOE and my-oh-my, his vocals were superb. They played this as the encore and sounded JUST LIKE THIS. He may have the burden of age but has rarely lost the punch in his voice.
i agree... even though he is not the same anymore, he's still great, awake from 1994 is probably the best album of any metal singer on earth...
His voice is great. It makes Dream Theater unique with their style of music.
Man that guitar solo put a smile on my face. :-)
+Foxy Moto It's such a wonderfully jazzy / funky / prog fusion solo. One of my favorites from Petrucci. :D
+Foxy Moto it reminds me of steve vai so much
Its a touch of almost every technique you can play, and this was a perfect flawless victory.
Another of Dream Theater's masterpieces! I can never tire of listening to this song! :)
One of the best performance of Dream Theater ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

2.) Under a glass moon
3.) Erotomania

Outstanding performance by LaBrie.
Can u guys please take a moment to appreciate the work of camera man. Man pure magical.
Singing is just incredible- as good if not better than the studio. Excellent all-round sound quality too!
Miss those DT times. Glad I got to see them. The early songs and MP on drums for them sound so organic and natural.
Dude....I’m LOVING the amount of bass in this mix
I was there 5th row on the floor JP side.. They were all on fire that night , James was phenomenal!
What a band and the most amazing live performace ever. Pure clean and unplayable song. Thanks DT for absolutely greatest music
5:16 "buy a pen...I'm a wanker"
Pasta Mista you ruined this part for me forever lol.
Pasta Mista for fuck's sake 😂😂 Cannot unhear!
In this live version it might sound like that but in the studio version you can hear James clearly say: "By your hand, I'm a awaken". ;)
Yeah, no shit Sherlock. But there's the same stupid comment in the studio version and it's not funny.
XD

Tell me
Remind me
Chase the water racing from
the sky
Always beside me
Taste the memories running
from my eyes
Nervous flashlights scan my
dreams
Liquid shadows silence their
screams
I smile at the moon
Chasing water from the sky
I argue with the clouds
Stealing beauty from my eyes
Outside the soundness of your
mind
Bathing your soul in silver tears
Beneath a blackened summer sky
Praying for time to disappear
Beneath a summer sky
Under glass moonlight
Night awaits the lamb's arrival
Liquid shadows crawl
Silver teardrops fall
The bride subsides to her
survival
By your hand
I've awakened
Bear this honor in my name
This is, by far, my personal Favorite DT song.
Its my ringtone :)
Let's stop for a moment to appreciate the fact that they NAILED this. So we'll orchestrated.
Amazing! I had to check if I wasn't listening to the studio version!
Right? LaBrie sounds way too good in this concert. He did good
I think it's better than the studio version
I agree
look at John in 03:39 to 03:41 , this live version has been dubbed or re-recorded in studio to fill the part when John didn't strum his guitar
they were using a backing track in the live concert, why? because the original track had 2 guitars and 2 keyboards in some parts
