@Ted Allison You seem to have some problem with spencer probably because he is not the best but still gets lots of attention but your ways of saying this are misleading 1. the youngest person to break four is Jakob ingrbriksten at age 16 no fourteen year old has broken 4 2. You mention nico young doing 4:10 mile repeats you do realize nico is one of the best high school milers ever
Nice! It would be interesting to see Spencer try a trail run with you to go outside his comfort zone and see why trail running is so great around Boulder. Maybe a quick trip up Bear :-)
The arm carriage says it all hahaha. It’s crazy how much different training effects speed. In XC I have a hard time breaking 30 in repeats, but in track I click off 26s
Fantastic collab! Been loving Spencer’s content lately so great to see you two work together! You should do a 6 week track block of training with him, you downplay yourself in the commentary compared to Spencer but I reckon you’d be surprised how you’re form will change and how quick you’ll get in that short period of time!! Keep smashing it 👊
Really interesting analysis Sage! I think I’m a mix of fast and slow twitch. In high school I ran 56.4 (400m) and 2:05 (800m), but nowhere close to your 5k time (17:15)
Compared to me you definitely lean more stamina. In junior college I went 52.7 (400m), 2:09.9 (800m), and 4:39.5 (1,500m). Guess which ones my coaches had me focus on? That's right: the distance ones. I know. I had the same bewildered thoughts back then too. I also ran like 19 minutes in a 5K road race my JC coaches forced me to do. I really hated my collegiate running experience and honestly probably should've went to a different school that could actually recognize which events I should've done. I'll pile on by saying I had some 200m practice intervals in the 23.0 neighborhood. But yeah-leave me in the middle distance races to get embarrassed every week.
I'm weird in nature as my primary school friend challenged me to decathlon our early 20's remember being fan of weight training back then and without any running I did 12,9 (100m), 1:17 (400m) and 6:53 (1500m) I wasn't tiny at all 187cm/99kg but I think more sprinter type thought about 19 years later I'm challenging myself with long distance running ☺️ after 20 month of slow progress I'm getting lighter as today morning I was just under 86kg.
@@ashleyjohn4309 I've actually considered it, especially considering how much more I know about running now than I did back then. That whole full-time work plus side hustle thing kind of gets in the way though.
@@TheReelRaymond haha didnt run in college but those were all my times exactly! Keep me in the 2 or 400m or bump me up to half or full marathons to wierdly find my niche!
Great breakdown Sage, you're right, Spencer looks so relaxed at that pace, you did well keeping up! I would recommend playing with your upper body / torso lean. I recently had a gait analysis done and my torso lean was probably around 3-5°, they recommend ~8-10°, that's probably the difference between you and Spencer. I've retrained it (easy adjustment compared to bringing glutes in and reducing overstriding) and found it to be far more efficient. There are a lot of gains to be made from continued form focus as you often say, appreciate you doing these breakdowns, this was awesome!
I like this video a lot. I think it's one of the best videos that you've ever made. Nice footage and you explain so well differences in running forms. Spence is a nice dude, I've watched his channel for a couple of years already. I'm looking forward to seeing you run with him in the mountains.
Its nice to see you spar with other "better" runners than you sir Sage. This is what i envisioned when i wanted you to do interviews of elite runners. This will help you improve your game further. And hopefully someday, we might see you run a marathon again. And finally achive your dream p.r.
Looks like you were having fun Sage! I tell people who ask me about getting fit for marathons, "if you want to run a marathon fast you need to run a half fast, if you want to run a half fast you need to run a 10k fast". Etc etc. You get the idea ;) It's so true what you said about there being value in running these shorter distances faster to build speed and stamina for the longer distances. Thanks for putting this video together. It was great.
Well done Sage. Probably your best vid since racing Killian. Given your engineering and data focus the insights around form on other runners is a good area for future vids.
Great video. One of the best running vids I’ve seen in the last couple of months. Really informative. Wish there was a regular schlub running with you as well, would be fun to see what they look like at sprint pace
I can see the difference in posture between you Sage and Spencer, he is slightly leaning forward like most of sprinters and this is his advantage...is not easy!!! But well done to you.
This is the video I wanted! I actually took screenshots of you two and did the same analysis, just not as thorough. Now I just need to lock in the improvements for myself after my ankle ligaments heal...
nice one! i've been following both of your channels :) Looking at you two running together, it does seem like sage's stride is over-reaching a bit, while spenser's landing is more under the body , but obviously it's also because it's not at a comfortable speed for sage.
you can really see the difference in running technique around the 5 minute mark. spencer has a nice forward lean and looks effortless, sage looks like he's leaning backwards and working really hard. I'm not dissing sage, he's an amazing runner and a great bloke.
So back on the track for a 10k Sage? any surface... great collab I have been following both of you for a while now so it is fun to see this - selfishly this comes at a great time for me with someone I am helping coach - the juxtaposition of your two forms is perfect for instruction, as she is working towards XC and the mile (if those things happen)
When athletes special said he was going to do 6 x 150's, I thought he meant 6 x 1500s, in my head I was like damn dude that's crazy (it didn't even matter the pace). I only do three miles worth of sprints right now, and my fastest mile is normally the last one between 4:30/m and 4:00/m. Great work out guys!
Nice smooth form, Sage. Spencer is more up on his midfoot on landing, though, and also is leaning forward more which might make for smoother sailing at this very fast speed. Thnx for the vid!
Watch from 4:45 . It's obvious why sage struggles keeping that pace, just watch how safe swings he's chest and swings shoulders ! The dude Infront stays straight, he's upper body is super stiff and he uses all he's energy on he's legs - sage uses loads of energy twisting. Techniques so different, Sage has a wide and tall frame, the dude in front has narrow hips and shoulders - being tall is a disadvantage, I've studied sports science, and running economy - there is no denying, if your short, you have an automatic advantage. Less body mass, easier to stay cool, less wind resistance. Considering Sages height, he does amazing !
Great video. It would be interesting to see side by side comparisons of you running 35” 200s & Spencer running 30” 200s. And then your 30” vs his 25” 200s. I wonder if his mechanics would break down a little if he was running them at 25? Probably not much, since this is his specialty. Cool video Sage!👍
This is a great video for someone like me who is in process of overhauling their form. Seeing the difference between your respective forms in terms of lean/fall is eye opening. I'm late to the game here so wondering if you have a video where you have tried to adapt or adjust your lean based on this experience? Thank you for doing this and putting it out there...this is how we all improve!
I really enjoyed that one Sage. Fantastic comparison at speed and an interesting insight that longer distance runners might get a bit lazy and run a bit too upright. I'd be interested to know if you are going to try to adapt your running form for the longer stuff in light of this. Cheers, Greg
I think that hip mobility has a lot to do with your running form. You are probably swaying around compensating for your lack of mobility, which is totally understandable and something you always work on. Also, the athkete Soecial is heaps younger than you do will have that natural mobility at his age. You did great Sage!
